Never has a final year of high school had so many new beginnings. The second volume of the fan-favorite BL manhwa turned K-drama, now in print for the first time.
Seo Haebom had only just gotten used to having his friend-turned-distant-housemate, Jo Taesung, acknowledge his existence, but now it seems like they might actually be...friends again? As Taesung brings Haebom into his social circle, Haebom discovers not only how much he’s missed his childhood playmate, but how much more fun high school can be if he has the confidence to stop being such a wallflower.
But after so many years of a predictable—if lonely—life, Haebom now can’t seem to stop his world from changing too quickly. Just as he begins to enjoy his new normal, Taesung starts acting like he might want to change their relationship yet again, this time to something more than friends.
Volume 2 includes episodes 16-30 of the webcomic Cherry Blossoms After Winter.
This took everything I was concerned about in volume one and resolved it beautifully. These two characters are so precious and their love so sweet. The volume moves pretty quickly, but it never felt like I was missing anything. I'm excited to see their relationship grow.
I've always figured the manhwa would flesh out the story a lot more than the live action. But this volume was...both incredibly short and weirdly disappointing. It genuinely felt like speed-reading through an abridged or Cliff's Notes version.
In this volume alone, we cover: -Haebom's bullies losing their social standing and Taesung's friends trying their best to befriend Haebom, which sort of works, although we never really get to see them spending much time together. -A reveal that Taesung had a past girlfriend whom Haebom had never been aware existed, but whom Taesung had never really cared about. -Taesung's backstory with his rough family life and connection to Haebom. -Taesung's mother being an absolutely horrible parent?????? -Taesung suddenly telling Haebom he likes him. -Haebom saying uhhh well we can't date because that would be weird and insulting to your mother whom we both live with. -Taesung forcibly kissing Haebom and then feeling terrible about it. -Haebom avoiding him for a while. -Taesung saying it's okay we don't have to interact but please consider dating me, my mother might accept us. -Them beginning to secretly date??? ???? -Fast forward to graduation. -????
I just...don't get how we zoomed past literally every single important relationship development point? It feels like entire chunks of the story are just missing.
The really, really good part of this volume is all the stuff from Taesung's childhood. It explains a bit more, I guess, about how he and Haebom could've spent 7 years in a house together without interacting or knowing anything about each other...because that's kind of how Taesung was raised, and how his mother is.
In the first volume (and in the live action), Taesung's mother is presented as a pretty nice lady, who's very kind to Haebom and was great friends with his mother before his parents died and she took him in. Which is sort of true. But it turns out that she'd abandoned her own son for most of his childhood, to the point where he wasn't even sure he had a mother.
He'd been raised by his grandmother, who frankly should have more of a role in the current story, since it's clear she was the one who'd cared for him and taught him more about what relationships and affection are supposed to look like. His mother had been "too busy with work" to see him, although his father had occasionally visited, so I'm not sure what his excuse was. Both parents were too busy with work to take care of their own child? Or to even interact with him at all?
At one point, Taesung's mother abruptly showed up and took him back "home," which wasn't explained at all...but appears to have been because Haebom's family had moved back to the area (?), and Taesung's mother appeared to be using him as a buffer to hang out with her former best friend, who had a son the same age.
It turns out she'd actually abandoned Taesung because she was super disappointed he wasn't a girl, and that she'd really wanted her daughter and her best friend's son to get married. Which turns into a cute moment where Taesung tells Haebom about it, and Haebom says well why can't we get married then, I like you.
And while Haebom appears to have completely forgotten about any of their past together, Taesung has clung to this for years...but without talking to Haebom about any of it once his parents died and he moved in with them.
Some things do make a bit more sense here: Taesung's pretty emotionally shut off and was clearly afraid to be proactive with Haebom, who'd always been the bright, energetic, friendly, encouraging, outgoing one - until his parents died and he felt abandoned and isolated in a new home where his former friend didn't seem to want him, and his new adoptive mom took care of him but wasn't really around much.
In short, both of them are an absolute mess and it makes no sense whatsoever for them to suddenly jump into dating each other?? Out of nowhere??? With zero buildup or progression or...anything.
I just don't get it, and it's pretty disappointing at this point. It feels like half the story is missing.
This gave us more background and more movement in current day. I did cry again when they were talking about him losing his family. Its very sad to me. There was a forced kiss but he apologized! We never see that in these stories. Overall, I like the characters but their childhoods right now are the most interesting part to me. I am just so sorry they had this miscoommunication and weren't able to be there for each other. It makes sense why they both felt the way they did and it held them back from being close.
This volume completely stole my heart. Getting a deeper look into Taesung’s past made me love him even more. Taesung’s way of speaking to Haebom is everything—gentle, awkward, sweet… it just makes every scene between them feel so real and tender.
Me decepcionó.

'I didn't like you all this time... ...just to do that to you.'
Okay, volume 2 turned out to be much better but it also isn't without some questionable things happening. The pace picked up by a lot that it basically started jumping from one point to another and just like that they've graduated high school which means we end up missing a lot of the scenes in between that would have been so cute to know, sigh. I also wish some of the dialog wasn't so simple that it read hella basic at times. I guess the translation is to blame for that
There are more flashbacks so we get to know about just how terrible Taesung's mother used to be holy shit and about his traumatic childhood to the point that he didn't care about either of his parents and only chose to live with her mother because of Haebom gaah (Bomie the cutest nickname, though). Oh and all the baby Taebom scenes were cute af. Also, that bonus chapter with Haebom wearing Taesung's old clothes eeee
The art is still simple but I've gotten used to it so it seems to suit the story now
This was another sweet installment in this series! I enjoyed myself while reading it ✨
The one critique I have of this manhwa is the pacing. Our two main characters suddenly kissed, had an argument, decided to date, and then graduated from high school all in one volume 🧍🏻♀️We definitely could’ve taken more time to get here.
Regardless, I continue to enjoy how sweet and anxious Haebom is. He’s such a cutie patootie, and I can definitely understand his nerves about losing the only family he has left.
I’m also grateful that Taesung acknowledged that he forced himself on Haebom the second time they kissed, and he shouldn’t have done it. He actually apologizes to Haebom for his actions. He definitely still pushed Haebom to think more deeply about what he feels about him, but without crossing any actual boundaries.
Guess I’ll keep reading the series to see where it goes next ✨
Volume 2 continues to be just as cute and sweet as the first one. The only issue I had with this volume was that when there were time skips or a transition into the next day, the panels seems to blend into one another to where you really had to pay attention and be like, "Oh, okay, this is the next day/a week later" ect. And by blending I mean the panels being literally side by side and not like, beneath each other with how they tend to traditionally be done in a way that makes sense.
But with that set aside, I still recommend this series to those who was something that's self-care and comfort. I'm not sure if the later volumes will be like that, as I haven't read the series online, so I'm going into this blind, but so far its definitely been a very enjoyable ride. Would recommend.
Reading all the toxic bl with red flags and here Taesung was freaking out thinking he has forced a kiss on Haebom.
____
This volume was more of a breather considering the upcoming volumes may or may not have some pretty shady things happening. Haebom was hanging out with friends, getting drunk with Taesung and kissing and in a classic move forgetting all about it in the morning. 😂
Oh and the ending where he asks Taesung for more time so that he can work on himself and be more confident. I love to see my babies grow 💌
I really love this coupling but I struggled with this instalment. The timelines of past/present were confusing to me in graphic novel format. I felt that aspect wasn't signposted well, so I was pulled up short thinking how the scene had jumped. It definitely felt like less happened plot-wise than volume one.
I like where this season left off and because of my love for this couple, I'll be reading on.
THIS IS GIVING MORE. The first book was eh, THE SECOND ONE SLAYS. In the first one it didn’t really explain specific information, but now it’s giving more context and updating the situations and backstory, it’s AWESOME, I loved it.
I’ve already read this series before and coming back to reread this uber wholesome start of their relationship makes me cackle because these two get it on like crazy later.
The angst is so good though.
Recap: drunk kiss, confession, avoidance, start of dating in secret.
It’s fine. It felt like things were dragging out and then suddenly sped up way too fast. And this volume felt like a sort of closure point, so I wonder if I’ll have the drive to keep reading the series. 😅
I love this series. It's so fluffy and sweet. This volume wraps up their high-school years, so maybe more of the drama and romance will start in volume 3.
