Poppy Cooks: The Potato Book: 101 Recipes from the Potato Queen

Fried. Baked. Mashed. Roasted. From TikTok's queen of the potato comes the ultimate potato cookbook!

"Not simply a social media sensation, but heartwarmingly the actual, real thing... Poppy is the High-Priestess of The Potato."
— NIGELLA LAWSON

You asked, and she heard—this is Poppy Cooks' all-potato cookbook. The potato, the humblest of ingredients, is also one of the most accessible, adaptable and affordable too, and this brilliant cookbook celebrates the range and variety of recipes possible from one mighty ingredient. In these pages are the tools you need for cooking the perfect potatoes every time—whether they be roast, mash, fondant, gnocchi, wedges, or fries. Poppy starts with a signature classic recipe for each type, then adds tips and tricks for cooking with different methods and flavors. She even includes mouth-watering international classics (think latkes, dauphinoise and tartiflete) and old-school freezer favorites (hello potato smiles, tater tots, and curly fries!).

With 101 recipes, from crispy cubes to french fries to patatas bravas to Poppy's ultimate 15-hour potatoes, this is THE book you need to raise your potato game and cook like the Potato Queen herself.

This book made me buy duck fat. It's true! Unlike many readers who discovered Poppy Cooks on TikTok or Instagram, I saw The Potato Book - 101 Recipes from the Potato Queen on the new release shelf of my library portal and reserved it immediately. Who doesn't love potatoes? Patiently waiting for 6 weeks for this popular title, little did I know that my roast potatoes would never taste the same again.

Living in England, Poppy O'Toole trained in Michelin-starred restaurants but lost her job as a Junior Sous Chef during the pandemic. Deciding to make cooking videos and gaining a substantial audience, Poppy filmed a series called '25 Potatoes Recipes to Get You Through the Second Pandemic'. The resulting success was huge and Poppy embraced the love for potatoes and went FULL POTATO in her content from that point on.

Later filming 'Around the World in 80 Potatoes', '12 Days of Christmas Potatoes' and 'Cooking Potatoes Every Single Day until I Physically Implode' she's now the Potato Queen and was nicknamed the 'High Priestess of Potatoes' by Nigella Lawson.

Since reading her book, I've started following Poppy on Instagram and watching her work magic with the humble potato in the kitchen adds another delicious layer of enjoyment.

The first recipe I tried was The Classic Roast Potato, which involved a number of additional steps to what I was doing that produced potatoes that are crispy on the outside yet fluffy on the inside. Yum! The next recipe I attempted was (you guessed it) the Goose-Fat Roasties. They're so delicious my husband has taken to calling them pro-tatoes and they're now a regular staple on steak nights.

When my time with the The Potato Book was up, it was filled with so many terrific recipes I was loathe to return it to the library and decided to buy a physical copy for myself. This rarely happens with a recipe book, earning The Potato Book - 101 Recipes from the Potato Queen by Poppy Cooks an instant 5 stars.

I think Poppy is fab. She's curated a well thought out, extensive cookbook entirely based on potatoes, what's not to love?

The sections make sense, different variations of a potato dish in the same sections. She goes through a "basic" version (she's Michelin trained, it's not that basic) but also reiterates the process in the individual recipes rather than saying " go back to x page" which I appreciated.

I wanted to make the tartiflette for my first recipe, realised I'd have to make substitutions but it was still very tasty! I've dog eared many pages of other recipes I want to try.

This is pure potato goodness. Also most of these recipes are gluten free and what recipes are not GF look like they can easily be adapted. Yay! Potatoes!

I was excited when our local cookbook club chose this because I have hungry teens, with friends over often. I should cook more potatoes because they are cheap and filling.

Trouble with this cookbook is that the recipes are time consuming and our group agreed that we have all made easier and better tasting potato recipes from other books.

Here's the rundown:

Animal Fries: Ok but the sauce gelled fast. It should be topped with caramelized onions but these are not in the directions.

Hash Browns: Took the lady between 12pm-6pm to make. Dicing one third of the potatoes made her mad. They tasted okay but she thought that the grocery store frozen ones are better.

Classic Hasselbacks: This was a tasty baked potato.

Green Goodness Salad: Everyone liked it. Hard to find anchovies. People thought it would be good for a bbq. I liked the hot potato salad from Matty Matheson better.

Coronation spiced Potato Salad: ok

The group also complained that there are no total times and that all the instructions should be on one page.

Our recommendation: Cook the potato recipes from your other favourite books and give this a miss.

Even though a lot of these recipes can be found on her website or social media pages, I love a nice cookbook in hardcover format for the shelf. The pictures were nice and the directions are easy to follow, although some of them are not so specific, and some of the recipes are just repeats of others with small adjustments in spices. I'm looking forward to trying out more of these in the kitchen this year.

Easy simple recipes that help you make both easy and more complicated dishes. Great details on texture and done-ness, which is always appreciated with potatoes.

Rating reflects how many recipes I marked that I wanted to try - around 75%

Some good recipes. Need a deep fat fryer for the best ones.

Lack of some basics though. Gnocchi, potato farls, potato waffles etc.

There's a decent variety of potato recipes and I like that there are baked options. I get nervous deep frying things so I like that there are other ways of cooking these recipes.

This is a really pretty recipe book, and I do love potatoes. But I guess I'm just not that interested in spending the time to make these.
