It’s time to play, and the rules are simple. You run… You hide… You pray. Lucian Voss is the man who has made my life the pleasurable hell that it is. He sees everything. He hears everything. He wants me to submit, and no matter how hard I try, I can't deny the pull between us. He is relentless, intense, and obsessed. He is everything I should run from, but the only thing that I want. If I win, I get my freedom. If he wins, he gets me. This begs the question, do I really want my freedom, or do I want to submit? When the truth is revealed and loyalty is tested, do I accept my new fate, or do I run?
This is a DARK romance with HEAVY triggers. Reader's discretion is HIGHLY advised
Emily Klepp is a Western North Carolina native residing in eastern Tennessee with her loving husband and two beautiful children. She has been writing since she was fourteen years old as a way to cope with her anxiety. She hopes to help others be able to speak their truth by writing about topics that are considered too taboo for societal norms.
This was definitely a 3.5 ⭐️ but for the sake of GR, I'm marking it as 4⭐️. The story was actually okay, but the relationship between our FMC and MMC just didn't quite work for me. I think my biggest issue is that Elise seemed so sassy, independent, and sure of herself, but for lucian, she just goes soft so quickly.
That aside, the second half of the book really grabbed my attention and held it. The concept of both cults and their views on women and consent, I found to be utterly fascinating.
I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
I will say you need to read the trigger warnings please! Your mental health does matter! This was beautifully written it does have a lot of topics it sets on. You follow Elise and Lucian. Elise grew up in the foster system and as she gets bigger and goes off to college she finally has one of her actual family members reach out. She tells Elise she is her aunt but as the story goes on she finds out that her aunt is actually her mom. The community that Lucian is apart of they knew her mom. But when her mom dies of cancer she leaves Elsie her house. Shes considered at the beginning as an outsider but then she falls into place in finding a found family. Lucian has his eyes on her since the moment she moved in. Elise finds him a tad bit annoying but they both fall in love with each other in the end. He will do anything and everything in his power to protect her and love her! She has finally found a family who will love and protect her at all cost!
Triggers: Stalking, heavy Somnophilia, dubious consent, consensual no consent, train bang, sexual assault/rape, kidnapping, cult behavior/rituals, violence, mass murder, mention of CSA Tropes: Enemies to lovers, Stalking, Secret Society, Primal Play, Somnophilia, consensual nonconsensent, Halloween Games, train bang, Exhibitionism/voyeurism, Touch Her and Die, Edging, Forced Orgasms, Dom/Sub
Please make sure to check the trigger warnings on Emily’s website.
I did have a hard time for the first half of the book getting into the story. I had to stop and start it multiple times. But the final half of the book kept me engaged
The atrocities Elise has to endure at the hands of Jake made me physically wince when reading.
I absolutely loved how willing Lucian was to try to understand and experience what Elise did. He was willing to be tortured and mutilated just like her. He wanted to know what it was like for her, I mean, he couldn’t get it 100% as he didn’t have the same traumatic background and experiences she did but he was going to go through it with her.
Lucian is a very patient and caring Dom and partner to Elise.
Um so check your triggers then get in the car and get to maple falls…. Elise has been gifted a house and a trust from her “aunt” in the event of her passing but the “aunt” is her aunt at all…. Lucian has set his eyes on Elsie and stops at nothing to obtain her.. Elise has a past and wants nothing to do with Lucian or the neighborhood she has moved to. Soon she finds out what lifestyle the neighbors enjoy. She is a computer engineer who works from home and also learns her boss is apart of the community. But he has a sinister side please a family secret. Elise gets kidnapped and used in a horrible way but don’t fear Lucian gets her back and gets her healed and they pay her ex boss Jake and his community a visit 😉

yeah so wtf did i j read? PAY ATTENTION TO TRIGGER WARNINGS!!!
i feel like the author has 1. never been r*ped before and 2. doesn’t know what ptsd is like.
not gonna lie, it was kind of freeing to be able to read the word “r*pe” so many fucking times in such a small book. i only was able to use the word about two years ago
such a strange, strange book. i’m no dark romance virgin by any means. the book itself was surprisingly written…well? i didn’t feel like i was reading a wattpad book written by a 15 year old virgin so that was a nice change. the subject matter could’ve been researched a bit more. it was weirdly fast paced but beggars can’t be choosers i suppose. all in all, my only thoughts were “what the fuck?”
Absolutely loved this book!! I haven’t been able to read in almost a month. Definitely was an Interesting pick to start reading again. I was not expecting any of that in the book but oh man was it amazing. I absolutely love Elise and Lucian.
3.5 ⭐️ This story is very dark. Definitely check the tw on the authors website before reading this.
Elise (24) is a sympathetic character. She's been traumatised by the many bad homes where she's been fostered after she's been left at a gas station as a newborn. After she has inherited a house in a gated community, she decides that it's the fresh start that she needs. This is where the story gets a little bit iffy to me. I occasionally felt like I was missing some steps in the story while reading because of the jumps that were made in the relationship development between Elise and Lucian. Example: they acted like they've had a prior conversation about consent, but they hadn't.
Most of their relationship dynamic was highly sexualy charged and only seemed to revolve around that. I was disappointed because both Elise and Lucian are intriguing characters, but as a couple, they fell flat for me. I was missing some deeper emotional connection and/or moments where they did some regular couple dating stuff that didn't revolve around intercourse.
Intense from the very beginning! Twists and turns along the way that kept me guessing right up until the very end!
I don’t know what I was expecting, but $ex cult definitely was not on my bingo card! I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this one because something seemed off at the beginning… once I got into it though I loved it and this might be my favorite Emily Klepp book yet!
Elise has lived a hard life bouncing from foster home to foster home until a long lost aunt reappears in her life, leaving Elise everything when she dies of cancer. Her aunt’s death pulls her back to the town she was born in. Shortly after moving in she realizes the little town, and it’s “mayor,” aren’t exactly what they seem.
As the truth gets revealed, Elise finds out the danger that her birth mother was trying to protect her from by giving her up is a lot closer than she ever could’ve imagined… Will she make it out in one piece or will she be shattered beyond repair?
I strongly suggest you read the trigger warnings before you read this. Your mental health is very important.
I don't think I read a book like this yet. His obsession is just what the title means. From day one that Elise moves in to the house that was left to her she experience things that you would never in a normal gated community. When Luci as she ends up calling him, sets his eyes on her its over and done with. She is who he is destined to be with and due to her past trauma, he goes slow and see to it that she overcomes them.
When trauma enters Elise's life, her community that she grew to love will do anything to see that she is taken care of.
Poor Elise has been thru so much in her young life. You really get to see how strong she is and how she finds the inner strength to survive. This book was an awesome read.
Truthfully at the start of this book I though it was only going to be a 4 ⭐️ read but the more I got into it the harder it was to put down. Yes it was a twisted dark romance and more than ever I would recommend checking triggers. Like Lucian I really didn’t trust or like Jake and I had that niggle that he was connected to Elise in the way that he actually was. But I still had the OMG moment when it was confirmed.
I liked Lucian from the start but I wasn’t keen on Elise but the more I got to know her story the more she grew on me. I did love her action to the noise complaint. That’s something I would have done.
The plot was heavy on adult activities but because of the community and their lifestyle / beliefs It wasn’t out of place and didn’t deter from the plot.
I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It's a bit out there. Still a good story and Elise is a good character. I loved being in her head. She didn't take crap from anyone. I found it so funny how Lucien tried to deal with her, and she didn't budge. The whole sex cult was way out there, but the resolution worked itself out. I'm debating on my feelings. In one sense, I liked it because of Elise. In other, I just found Lucien and the community just wacko! But I've liked weirder things before.
This is a scorching hot read but what lies underneath is a woman who has had so much trauma in her life and mysteries that she hasn't been able to solve that she can't accept that anyone could want her and love her. That all changes when she meets Lucian a man who doesn't give up on her and opens her to new experiences and a way to trust and connect with those around her. This has plenty of suspense and even a dark secret that is revealed. It's a well written story and I have it 5 stars because Emily Klepp earned it! You won't be disappointed!
Make sure to check your triggers!!! Because wow! This one was wild! Luci is 🔥🔥🔥🫣🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Definitely some darkkkkkkk stuff
The FMC inherits a home in a community that winds up being a deliciously dark sex cult, and she is sucked in, she has to heal a lot of trauma she endured in foster care, discover some things about her birth mom and herself, and follow her destiny.
Definitely a great read!

Omg yall, I couldn't put this book down it was so amazingly good! I absolutely recommending this book! Please be cautious as always and read the trigger warnings and take them very seriously. I loved every single dirty page ofvthis novel 🫶I definitely give this book an easy 5 stars!! Happy Reading 📚 awesome writing, Emily 🫶
What a wild ride!!!!! At first I was like no way this is just unrealistic, but I kept reading.
Then I thought ok, this a fun kinky cult and I am loving Lucian and Elise's relationship that is developing. I like the tight community they developed.
And in true Emily style there has to be the plot twist. What a plot twist!!!! I didn't see it coming. Very dark and graphic, loved the revenge end.
Check out the book and see how you enjoy the ride!!!
I’m all for fantasy, but the plot went from 0-100 within the first few pages. I felt like it was just not realistic but it definitely could be someone’s cup of tea.
I did not enjoy this book at all. The characters were all pervertedly sick as far as I'm concerned. There was no romance involved just sexual acts. I would not recommend this book it was really strangely weird.
This was not what I expected, but a decent story. The scenes were graphic enough to help you imagine but not overly descriptive. The primary female- Elise was kind of annoying but not so much that it made me want to stop reading. Overly decent dark romance.
"His Obsession" by Emily Klepp is a dark, intense, and utterly unflinching dive into the shadowy corners of desire, control, and psychological manipulation. This isn’t your typical neighborhood romance—this is a gated community with cult vibes, where the residents don’t just share friendly smiles—they share lovers, secrets, and rituals.
The story follows Elise, a woman trying to rebuild her life after inheriting her aunt’s home in this strange, almost too-perfect neighborhood. But peace is the last thing she finds. Almost immediately, she catches the attention of Lucian Voss—the powerful, magnetic man who not only lives next door, but practically rules the entire community.
Here, people live by different rules. Swingers, voyeurs, dominants, submissives—it’s all quietly accepted, even celebrated. Behind the manicured lawns and social events lies a dark undercurrent of sexual freedom mixed with eerie obedience. And Lucian? He’s at the center of it all. He’s not just a resident—he’s the leader.
When Lucian sees Elise, he decides she’s what’s missing—he needs a wife, and he’s already chosen her. What follows is a relentless pursuit that blurs the line between protection and possession. Lucian doesn’t seduce—he claims. And Elise, no matter how much she resists, can’t deny the pull she feels toward the man who watches her every move and breaks her boundaries with devastating precision.
This book deals with extremely dark content—stalking, manipulation, somnophilia, dubious consent, and emotionally coercive power dynamics. It's not for everyone, and the trigger warnings are essential.

Another truly winning read from this Author of dark, sultry and extremely emotionally charged romances. I've now read a few of this Author's works and to this day find it incredible how each book still captures my interest and curiosity in her world of, at times quite confronting plots surrounding triggering scenarios. In highlighting that it is a must that readers do check the trigger listing before venturing into this and any of her other works.
"His Obsession" is filled with an interesting plot that encompasses a rather deliciously created character that is as the title dictates possessive male but there is that plot trope of 'good verses bad' which provides that hidden 'other' possessive male character that creates the upheaval to the overall vibe of a 'happily ever after' story for the main couple. I absolutely loved the characters created and found something quite emotionally captivating in them. Yes there is a trope of not so much as taboo but something quite testing to community standards of what we are taught as morally right in regards to relationships, which is something I find quite tantilisingly interesting. But in the wider scope it still centers around a code of trust and power, or "Alphaism" in the world of romance telling. There was a great balance of action, drama, emotional concepts, sexual scenarios, possessive play and some downright evilness. But the biggest win for me is that the lead female always has this inner sense of strength and resiliency to be able to not only battle but win over circumstances to survive in more ways than others.
It’s time to play, and the rules are simple. You run… You hide… You pray.
His Obsession by Emily Klepp
His Obsession is a fantastic read! Emily is a dark & twisted evil genius. She knows how to paint a picture with her words and draw you right into the story. Then she takes you on an emotional rollar coaster ride that will excite you, break your heart, horrify you & make you fall in love. Elise inherents a house in a "close knit" community called Maple Falls. When she moves in, she has no idea the things she's about to see / experience. Luci (Lucian) falls for Elise the moment he lays eyes on her. He doesn't know why, but he is drawn to her, and he decides right then and there that she belongs to him. Elise is a fiesty, sarcastic, strong FMC. Luci is drawn to the brokenness in her from her past trauma. This book has a "found family" feel to it as the community she finds herself is out there but the support she receives from them will make your heart swell. Emily does dark so well but please read her warnings carefully as the dark themes in this book are VERY DARK. This story will not be for everyone. Your mental help matters. There are very traumatic themes in this book that may be too much for some people. Overall, this book was extremely wellwritten. The chemistry between Luci & Elise is hot, intense, and passionate. The spice is definitely spicing 🌶🥵🥵. And the story line is unique and well crafted. The spice does not take away from the plot and everything is very well balanced. By far one of my best reads of the year!
Please read the TWs. This book gets very dark and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Plenty of spicy moments, most consensual and naughty and fun, but there are times when they are not consensual.
As I was reading and I realized the book dealt with a cult and talking about destiny, I was a bit unsure if I’d like it. I’m not religious in anyways and I worried about how that would play in. Other than talking occasionally about a goddess or a god and destiny, thats all there was. The book definitely has some dark moments when Elise discusses past traumas and the trauma near the end if the book.
Elise is so strong for all that she has gone through and withstands as a survivor. Lucian is amazing in the support and love he shares as her husband, master and leader of their community. When Elise hurts, he hurts, so much so that he wants to take on the pain she experiences so that he knows what it’s like for her and how he can help her. He comes off as a but strong and stalkerish at the beginning but his belief in destiny, makes him believe he and Elise are soul mates. And it’s clear as the story progresses, that they are soul mates. They were made for each other, and will always put the other before themselves.
The community as a whole, is so supportive, especially Bradley, Laura and Claire. Elise having those friendships helps her to grow and heal and trust. I loved that these three, along with Lucian, are able to help her move past her awful experiences and to help her replace them.
Another great book another overcoming trauma and fear! I love how this author comes up with different ways to entertain but also to soothe the battered and traumed soul. “It’s time to play a game, and the rules are simple. You run… You hide… You Pray.” Never thought this would be the most entertaining book I’ve read this month but it has. Was there was messed up stuff, yes…if you have triggers, check them! Your mental health matters! This author is an advocate for mental health! My favorite though was “This is what freedom truly is about for me. It is having the power to submit however I want. It is having the ability to consent, but mostly, it is about finding pleasure and happiness beyond all of the trauma. Lucian gave me my freedom; He gave me my future. He is relentless, intense, and obsessed… but I am his obsession, and he is mine.” Who cares what your freedom, consent, recovery, happiness, pleasure, etc looks like, if it makes you happy and you are growing forward, you are going in the right direction! Screw them if they judge you for it! You have to do what makes you happy! This is why I love this author!! She is unapologetic in her writing. There is healing for anyone in words and deeds if you just believe in hope and dreams. It is possible!
This book is 😈DARK😈 and 🥵SPICY🥵. F•I•V•E• P•E•P•P•E•R•S•🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
The FMC inherits a home from her "Aunt" in a community called 'Luxe Fortuna' in Maple Falls. It turns out that the whole area is a sex cult and her neighbor, Lucian Voss (Luci as Elise will call him), is the leader and becomes instantly obsessed with her.
Elise Hart is still trying to overcome her past, after being put up for adoption at birth and in and out of foster homes with a lot of abuse. So, soon after moving in she finds out that her "aunt" who's died of cancer, is actually her Mom and left Elise everything.
Halloween Games is Elise's first time in the hunt. If she accepts the invite, she'll be "hunted" and fućkèd by the members for the next 8 hours. And, if Lucian catches her, they'll marry within 48 hours. During the hunt her boss, Jake also happens to catch her....little did she know he was sickly obsessed with her, and also, her half brother. Jake ends up kidnapping Elise and taking her to his own cult and beating and rãping her and allowing his members to do the same. Elise has to hold out hope that Luci will find her and save her.
This book does end with a Happily Ever After, but not before a ton of trauma.

Omg what an emotional rolllercoaster that hooks you from the very first page and does not let go . No seriously I made the mistake of starting this amazing story late last night around 12 am in the morning, and let’s just say I ended up reading until 4 am fighting to keep my eyes open because yes it’s just that addicting. All the twists and turns , the intrigue and suspense, the heartbreaking and heartfelt moments, the drama , the steam , the witty banter , the unexpected surprises , the love , the passion, the pain , the dark , raw , gritty and emotionally charged moments. Well my point is that His Obsession was and is one wild ride that takes you by surprise and leaves you wanting so much more . I love a possessive morally grey hero and a heroine who isn’t afraid to speak her mind , who’s strong and confident and feisty. That fits Luci and Elise to tee . They truly are a force to be reckoned with . Definitely be aware going in there are many triggers as this is not for the faint of heart and a very Dark read but none the less fantastic. His Obsession has to be one of the best books I’ve read this year 💜💜💜💜🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🔥🔥🔥🔥
I really enjoyed this book! The idea of a hidden cult being beyond a seemingly idealic town is a super intriguing setting. Elise and Lucian were a fantastic pairing with deep backstories who fit into the setting perfectly. I would love to see more written either about Elise and Lucian, or about another pairing within the same cult/town environment.
Some of my favourite quotes were: - "Taking someone from being traumatized and a brat to a complete and total power exchange is a journey. You can't force full submission. He may never even get full submission, but that is something that doesn't concern others unless he wants it to concern others." - "I'll wait for as long as it takes, my love. We were destined to be together," - "Kneeling for him like this feels like freedom. It feels like everything I've been longing for with the comfort of knowing this is where I belong." - "Please, don't push away that bratty little girl inside of you. She is there for a reason, and she can teach us both a lot about each other,"

Well this community definitely sticks together 😂 It totally is like a cu.lt, but at least not one that does terrible illegal activities or forces you to do anything. They did have some rituals and some interesting Halloween games… and did help heal trauma for the FMC so maybe a little bit illegal 🤣 It was definitely a different read with the whole sex cult thing going on, but it was written really well and the FMC was really likeable.
The only thing… her birthday was Halloween as well but nothing is mentioned during or after Halloween night… no one even wished her happy birthday 😂
