Together By Accident: A Unique M/M Romance

Rate this book
A misty, damp Saturday morning at the Co-op turned out to be more than just a routine grocery shopping trip for Carson.
In the blink of an eye, cars are smashing into each other right in front of him; as a stunned Carson watches, a young skateboarder on the sidewalk goes from pedestrian to victim.

Though retired, his EMT training kicks in automatically – Carson rushes to the young man’s aid, and just in time too, because the skater is bleeding out quickly, on the brink of death.

But no good deed goes unpunished. As a result of the rescue, Carson is thrust back into the biased eye of the media and the police, forced once more to revisit a past life that he thought he had paid for and put behind him.

That past doesn’t matter to Tegan, the young skater Carson saved. As a result, Carson finds himself in a budding relationship with Tegan, one that he’d hoped to have all his life, but one he never thought possible because of his past and his own self-doubts.

Now, Together by Accident, will Carson make something of their relationship, something that will last, or will Carson’s past and his fears crush it before it can blossom?

This book contains mature themes, descriptions of self-harm and attempted suicide, and has a controversial protagonist. It is recommended for readers 18 years of age or older.

What a terrible day to have eyes. DNF at 22%, when I literally became nauseated. I’ve read a lot of f#% up stuff under the guise of romance, but this was by far one of the worst.

The trickle truth doesn’t start until a couple of chapters in, when we learn the MC is a convicted sex offender. Then it comes out that he’s definitely guilty. Meanwhile, he’s whining nonstop about how terribly he’s treated due to his conviction. Also, he’s had series of failed relationships that all ended the same way. He blames his exes for starting a relationship with a 15 year old boy. If only they had loved him more, he wouldn’t have done it. Then, it goes into a long, far too long, description of how beautiful teenage boys are and how beautiful the one he committed the felony on was, but it was ok, because he loved him…that’s when I DNFed.

His nonstop justification for everything that went bad in his life - he never had a single moment of insight as to how he was the cause of all his problems.

Finally, his “love interest” is a 24 year old college student, who is 5’7” and 115 pounds, described multiple times as looking younger than his age, with absolutely no friends or family to support him.

Everything about the first 22% of this book was slimy and gross, full of whiny self-justification and complaints about how people are mean to convicted sex offenders, especially pedophiles. This reads like a recruitment tool for NAMBLA.

Perhaps it improves later, but I’m not going to keep reading to find out.

Author Zayne Kulder has taken the LGBTQ+ romance genre to a different level in "Together By Accident."

It's not a journey that is easy, nor is it for the faint of heart -- as you can see by the Reader's Advisory, things like self-harm and suicide are included in the tale, as well as some other unexpected plot twists. The thing that was most surprising to me was the main character's (Carson) background. I assume that he's the "controversial protagonist" that's mentioned in the book's summary (I won't say what it is to avoid spoiling the surprise for those who want to read it).

Admitedly, at first I was shocked and almost stopped reading when I discovered Carson's background -- but I decided to go forward because I was curious to see just what author Kulder was going to do with the character and how he would move both Carson and the overall story forward.

By the end of the novel, I found myself re-thinking some of my preconceived notions, and honestly found myself wanting to know if Carson and his newfound love, Tegan, would have something real and lasting... and was impressed with author Kulder's handling of it all, especially in light of the controversial nature of the protagonist.

DNF

There was a lot of TW for suicide. I wish there had been one for this, so I'm leaving this note- one of the MCs is a registered sex offender for at least taking photos of a 15 yo male model, he was attracted to, and said photos would be used for "masturbatory purposes".
*this information was from another reader which I'm thankful for.
