I have such fond memories of my grandmothers. They were both special in their own way and taught me so much about how to live my life that I will be forever grateful! Here’s the list of six top things they shared with me:
(1) Don’t say anything if you can’t say something nice about someone. I think this is my favorite one as it has kept me in good stead all my life.
(2) Never be late. Doing so makes you think you’re more important than someone else. You’re not!
(3) Life is too serious to be taken seriously. Keep a sense of humor, it will help get you through the hard times. They were both right about that one.
(4) Share what you can with those in need. Know what is your burden to bear, and what is not. This one has kept me sane over the years.
(5) Don’t be a critic. Critic’s don’t create, they only tear down. This helps me when reviewers say unkind things about my work. I try to remember that they probably just need a hug today.
(6) Do the best you can do at everything you do. At least then you will know you gave it your all.
Thank you, my beautiful grandmothers, for being strong and sharing your gems of wisdom with me. You did more good than you can possibly know. Hugs, January Bain
While I despise my nemesis Cliffy, Aka Cliff hanger, as an ending, this book made me go hmmmm on so many things.
The partner at the investigation firm, there is just not enough detail on her and I’m wondering if she’s related to the dr, something sketchy with her.
Author Bain continues to wow me with this series. Anna Hale is my wannabe spirit animal. I continue to love all the ways she taps into her inner wolf child, and makes decisions based on sheer bravery. And now Author Bain has added in a new male character who seems to be very similar to Anna, and also has a military background. Might we have a fight for Anna's love between Tom & Josh? I don't know, and perhaps I've read too many romance books. But the intensity between all of them is there. Its hard to say chemistry when you're reading about murders.
I also love the tagline on the cover page:
In the Shadowy Wilds of Alaska, Silence Speaks Volumes
That's eerie, but perfect! The story in this book is convoluted, but not confusing. Author Bain lays it all out easily, and you as the reader get to dig into everyone's psyche, even the villains'. Anna Hale is easy to root for. She has taken a lot of flack from town folk in the past because of their prejudice for her nasty stepfather. If anyone knew evil, she did. Anna had a knack for hunting it down. We get some inner dialogue from Anna that's straight from experience.
"What she had learned about secret groups recently blew the lid off the last of the nurture theory as well. These men had all the privilege in the world, had no need to harm another, and still they were h@ll bent on striking a wide path of assault through innocent victims. Twisted others to their cause by giving them what most people badly needed even if never admitted: a sense of belonging, whether it came from a street gang or a privileged order or an entire country captivated by evil ideology. How could anyone live in the twenty-first century and not come face to face with evil at some point? It was staring everyone in the face these days, whether in real life or on the screen."
This story shows so much research. There's not only a lot of information on Indian culture, but cult ideology. Now I'm assuming the cult discussed in the story is loosely based on Yale's famous Skull & Bones Society, which members have permeated every important area of society. There are probably hundreds of "societies" out there, but Yale's I would say is the most famous. The things those members have done for each other probably would shock all of us. But it was an interesting addition to the story!
I learned about Locard's Exchange Principle, which as soon as it was mentioned I looked it up. Definition:
In forensic science, Locard's principle holds that the perpetrator of a crime will bring something into the crime scene and leave with something from it, and that both can be used as forensic evidence. Dr. Edmond Locard was a pioneer in forensic science who became known as the Sherlock Holmes of Lyon, France. He formulated the basic principle of forensic science as: "Every contact leaves a trace".
So interesting! I gobbled up that information and used it as I read this book. I always appreciate an author that gives me something I didn't already know.
I loved what little we got with Charlie and really want more. What's her background? How did she end up there of all places? Lets give her something juicy to do! I also loved how at one point, (no spoilers) an important policeman told Anna she isn't the pariah she thought she was. This book also moved along an ongoing mystery from book one, but now there's a couple of new things to think about! However, this book made me feel really satisfied at the end. Author Bain kept the quality of the series consistent, and made me ready for book 3.
Fellow Mysteries readers, January Bain has been busy; here is book two in the Anna Hale PI series.
January Bain's "Death Trap," the second installment in the Anna Hale series, plunges readers into the chilling depths of Alaska's wilderness. In this gripping narrative, we follow Anna Hale, a private investigator whose tenacity and wit are as sharp as the icy landscapes she navigates. Bain weaves a complex tapestry of mystery and suspense, where the stakes are as unforgiving as the terrain. The story opens with Corporal Tom Jackson, a character hardened by the brutal terrains of Afghanistan, stepping into Anna's office. He's desperate for answers about his sister's murder, her body left on sacred land. This personal tragedy launches Anna into an investigation that stretches from the deceptive calm of snow-blanketed landscapes to the dimly lit alleys of human depravity. Bain's portrayal of contempt for women and the power structures of Hollywood and Washington is both harrowing and thought-provoking.
As the plot thickens, Anna uncovers a dark secret: The Order of Blood and Bone. This sinister plot, with ties tracing back to the Illuminati and Freemasons, wields unfathomable power. The disappearance of a young actress sets a ticking clock against the midnight sun, and with The Order setting a cunning trap, framing Anna as the perpetrator, the tension is palpable. Bain's skillful storytelling keeps readers on the edge of their seats, wondering if Anna can outwit the evil that invades her town and save the young girl's life. "Death Trap" is more than a mystery; it's a survival story against the backdrop of an unforgiving wilderness. Bain challenges her protagonist with a death trap that could spell doom not only for Anna Hale but for the very notion of justice. The novel is a testament to Bain's ability to craft a narrative that is both enthralling and a commentary on the darker facets of society. For those who seek a thriller that resonates with depth and complexity, "Death Trap" is a must-read. Get your hands on this captivating read—pick up your copy today!
When I received the ARC for this book I went back to read the first book so I would fully understand the characters and plot.
I have to say, this book is even better than the first one. I enjoyed seeing Anna come out of her shell more and begin to live again. Trauma causes so much pain and it takes a long time to get through. I've been rooting for Anna, and I'm hoping she's able to move forward a little more with every book.
The one thing that bothered me in this book was the secrets Anna kept. I get wanting to be safe and protect others, but there comes a time you need to get help. Especially with what happened towards the end of the book, she should have asked for help immediately. I hope that changes going forward and she trusts her team more.
Great mysteries just like with the previous book. I enjoy that there is always more going on than just the main case. You never know who or what will pop up next.
I am concerned that the author is headed towards a love triangle in this series, which I absolutely despise. Give the main character ONE love interest at a time. Love triangles are only added for drama and they detract from the plot. I hope the author doesn't take that route.
All in all a great read! I enjoyed it and will be adding this series to my TBR for the next release.
Thank you Booksprout for giving me a copy of this book!
The journey for Anna continues. During this journey, she still discovers what her triggers are that can send her back into the depths of drinking alcohol. She's learning to accept some people have her back and will do anything to protect her. Letting them into her life is a struggle. Her one constant is her very trustworthy dog, Friday. There is a bond which shows how fiercely each of them will protect the other.
I'm an avid mystery/thriller reader and love to read about psychopaths. For me, but maybe not for others, it was easy to figure out who the bad guys were in this book compared to the first book.
There were still twists and turns which made a great story. I want to keep reading this series and be on the journey with Anna Hale.
The stakes are higher for Anna in this second installment. The mystery and suspense continue from the first book, in another case that Anna gets pulled into. This case brings more danger to her door as she appears to go up against those who are part of a secret society for the elite, thinking they are above the law, but Anna is determined to prove them wrong.
The 'lone wolf' starts to form a pack that will always have her back, and she theirs, as she starts to let them in.
There is still a mystery to solve, but it seems Anna and her team won't be allowed to rest just yet. I can't wait to read the next installment and see what happens.
I really enjoyed the first book in the series and the second book is just as exciting. It continues Anna’s investigations into horrible crimes in and around her times in Alaska. The plot is interesting and it hooks readers in from the first page right to the very end. The setting is cold and brutal and mirrors the crimes Anna is investigating. The setting adds to the tension and drama around the plot. The characters are great and I love how brave and independent Anna is. It is fascinating to see how events impact on her and bring her closer to other characters as the storyline progresses. I’m already looking forward to finding out about her next investigation and what she uncovers next.
Awesome series -- loved Book one and now love Book two. I certainly would want Anna on my side - she is one amazing person and her dog Friday is right up there too. This 2nd book in the series is filled with intrigue, suspense, action, drama, and twists. I became totally immersed in this gripping tale and characters' lives. Intense from beginning to end. And WOW, what an ending and setup for the next book! So looking forward to the next book in the series and following Anna and her Lone Wolf investigators' exploits in bringing justice.
Wow Anna is a force and unstoppable as she goes up against some very vile and dangerous people. The strength this woman has is amazing, the intense scenes made it so exciting for me to see what happens next. I very much enjoyed this.
Another chilling, gripping dark story kept me on the edge of my seat. Great development for these wonderful characters. Already started reading the next one.
