Quatre lycéennes pleines d’espoir pour le futur, décident de sauver l’orme du parc George Sand, menacé d’être abattu au profit d’un projet de construction. Lassées de ne pas être écoutées par les adultes, elles décident de prendre la situation en main : et si elles jetaient un sort pour protéger cet arbre ?

J'aurais aimé voir de meilleurs contrastes sur les planches sombres car la lecture est assez difficile, en plein jour comme avec une lampe à côté.
L'histoire est simple et déjà vue mais elle fonctionne bien. J'ai moins accroché sur le style du dessin de manière générale.
J'ai adoré les pages bonus avec les recos des quatre persos !

really felt like an updated version of the craft, but not in a creepy/ick way.
there was even a craft poster on the wall in some panels! there was a shot of fairuza balk included. a poster from the faculty! a hawkins, in sweatshirt!

Des sorcières, de la sororité, du féminisme, de la magie + un scénario écrit par Taous Merakchi, dont j’adore le travail, autant vous dire que cette BD avait tout pour me plaire. Et là, bim, grosse déception.
J’ai eu du mal à venir à bout de l’histoire. En partie parce que énormément de planches sont beaucoup trop sombres au niveau de la colorimétrie et que je ne voyais même pas ce qui se passait dedans… difficile pour tout suivre. Les 4 ados communiquent beaucoup par sms et chacune a une couleur de bulle différente, ce qui est chouette, par contre la « gothique » du groupe son texte est écrit en noir sur du… violet foncé 😭 Illisible, je devais me pencher sur la BD et plisser les yeux pour lire ses messages.
Elle a aussi une histoire d’amour hyper mal écrite et limite cringe, qui ne sert à rien du tout, même pas au développement de son personnage.
L’autre raison pour laquelle j’ai eu du mal à venir à bout de la BD, ce sont les dialogues creux, ça me sortait en permanence de l’histoire. Les dessins sont également très inégaux, une critique que j’ai lue ici disait que parfois les personnages avaient des expressions qui ne correspondaient pas avec leurs gestes ou ce qu’elles disent, je suis assez d’accord. Globalement, l’ensemble ressemble à un brouillon, on sent des éléments intéressants mais il y a énormément de longueurs et j’ai vraiment eu l’impression de lire un premier jet, pas un travail éditorial fini.
Les filles ont chacune une personnalité différente mais elles sont aussi très stéréotypées, n’évoluent presque pas… et n’ont absolument aucun background. À tel point qu’en refermant le livre je me suis aperçue que j’étais incapable de me souvenir de leur prénom, à part une. Je ne me suis pas attachée à elles, du coup ce qui leur arrivait me passait un peu au dessus de la tête 🥲 Bon et la fin est… très précipitée. Le seul perso que j’ai bien aimé c’est Colette, la sorcière qui tient une boutique.
Définitivement pas pour moi donc, mais je mets 2 étoiles parce que je pense que malgré ses défauts c’est une histoire qui pourrait beaucoup plaire aux ados et qui porte de chouettes valeurs.

Such an easy, but enjoyable read. Love the main characters and how each were very original and developed. My only complaint is that I was hoping it ended with a cliffhanger so we’d get a sequel!

Les dessins colorés de la bande-dessinnée Coven de Taous Merakchi et Da Coffee Time ont tout de suite capté mon attention. J’ai passé un bon moment de lecture avec cette œuvre graphique young-adult qui a tout pour plaire. De mon côté, je dois admettre avoir été très enthousiaste en me lançant dans ma lecture, mais un peu moins une fois le livre refermé.
Le livre met en scène Ève, Diane, Lily et Morgane, quatre lycéennes qui souhaitent sauver le vieil orme du parc municipal, menacé d'être abattu. Dépourvues de solution, elles se tournent vers la magie. Malheureusement pour elles, leur rituel de magie tourne mal et les conséquences deviennent effrayantes.
J'ai aimé suivre ces quatre personnages principaux. Chaque personnalité est bien définie et on les identifie rapidement. Je trouve tout de même un peu dommage que les mêmes personnages aient été mis en avant, en laissant deux autres plus en retrait. L'intrigue est plaisante à suivre et intègre des sujets d'actualité intéressants comme la protection de l'environnement et le féminisme. La dernière partie du roman graphique m'a un peu moins emballé, rendant la conclusion de l'intrigue bien trop facile pour une histoire qui avait, à mes yeux, plus de potentiel.

Coven starts off with four friends (Lily, Diane, Morgane, Eve) trying to save a tree from being chopped down, So they come up with the awesome idea of trying witchcraft to see if that could help save the tree. Of course, things go great and the tree is saved. However, we all know it doesn’t stop there. With that said things get a little crazy.
When I first started to read Coven it felt very 90’s from the dress to even the decorations in one of the bedrooms. So I was confused as to what time frame we were in until there was a mention of snap chat and the use of cell phones. It did throw me off a bit because there were also posters of The Craft and The Faculty ('90s movies). Someone even mentioned something about Braveheart which I am not too sure what teenagers these days even know about that movie.
Overall I really enjoyed Coven and hope there will be more volumes in the future. The art style was chef kiss and that is the whole reason I wanted to read Coven in the first place. Even the ending had a twist that I did not see coming and even cleared up some things that I questioned. Which helped the coven go from a 3 to a 4 star. I recommend it to anyone who likes the 90’s witchy vibe, a friend group where all the characters have different personalities, and anyone who wants a quick read.

This is my first graphic novel read for the year and to be honest, I really enjoyed it. It had all the elements of an enthralling story that pulled me in and kept my attention from start to finish. Initially, when I downloaded it (rather late at night), I only intended to read a few pages at the time. However, once I picked it up, I could not put it back down and read the entire thing in one swift sitting.
The pacing of the story in combination with the gorgeously unique illustrations was just perfect for a quick read.
I really enjoyed the fact that apart from the main story we got a glimpse into each of the girls’ lives and so at the end I felt like I was really connected to them and their personalities. Some other reviews mentioned that the ending was too predictable, however I did not expect THAT ending of all things. I thought the end was perfect for the book and it sets up for a continuation of the series if that’s the direction they are headed in. All in all, this was an enjoyable read and I would happily continue if they chose to make this a series!
TLDR: I’m a sucker for witchy themes and this graphic novel was no exception.

Four friends discover magic while they try to stop the felling of an old elm tree under which they grew up and share many memories with.
These ladies decide to perform a magic ritual from an old magic book they bought from a thrift store in a fun way. They are surprised to know that it worked and so they explore further.
But magic always has a price to be paid so does this have any consequences too? Read to find out.
I found the story very wholesome and the art very beautiful. It was a fun lil story enveloping friendship, and ofc magic.

Kowen to powieść graficzna stworzona przez Taous Merakchi oraz Da Coffee Time, którą u nas wydało Wydawnictwo Młody Book.
Ta historia kusiła mnie od dnia premiery, ale ciągle było mi jakoś z nią nie po drodze i nie mogłam się ku niej zebrać. W końcu się jednak udało i muszę przyznać, że było to coś innego niż się spodziewałam. Nie znaczy, że było złe – bardzo dobrze się przy lekturze bawiłam, a także doznałam kilku zaskoczeń.
Zacznę od tego, co się przy powieściach graficznych rzuca w oczy jako pierwsze, czyli styl, w jakim zostały wykonane panele historii. Są one bardzo żywe i pełne kolorów, co sprawia, że bardzo przyjemnie się na nie patrzy. Kreska ilustracji jest naprawdę przyjemna, chociaż były momenty, gdy odstawała od pozostałych – głownie przy obrazach zbliżeń na twarze wykrzywione w silnych emocjach. Ogólnie jednak każdy panel jest po prostu piękny i unikatowy. Nie raz łapałam się na tym, że w trakcie czytania przyglądałam się ilustracjom zamiast iść dalej z historią.
Sama historia jest bardzo ciekawa. Śledzi ona losy czwórki przyjaciółek, które postanawiają przeprowadzić magiczny rytuał po raz pierwszy w życiu w szczytnym celu, a potem zmuszone są mierzyć się z konsekwencjami swoich działań. Sam wątek magiczny jest dobrze poprowadzony i angażujący, jednak wątki rozgrywające się wokół głównej fabuły niejednokrotnie okazały się dla mnie mało interesujące. Szczególnie męczyłam się przy wątku miłosnym jednej z bohaterek, który wydawał się kompletnie oderwany od całości i nie mający nic wspólnego z głową historią. Czuć było, że jest tam, by być i nie pełnił żadnej większej funkcji.
Same postacie były naprawdę ciekawe – każda z nich była wyjątkowa i dało się to poczuć już od samego początku. Co prawda dało się odczuć, że zabrakło pewnego wprowadzenia bohaterek i przedstawienia ich czytelnikowi. Skutkiem tego jest to, że imiona pojawią się ukryte w dialogach i wyłapałam wszystkie cztery dość późno. Nie utrudniło to w żaden sposób lektury, ale stanowiło pewne źródło irytacji, gdy nie wiedziałam, kto jest kim. Jednak same w sobie były dość różne, by się nie myliły.
Najbardziej jednak kupił mnie sam klimat tej historii. Bardzo wyraźnie widać, że jest ona stworzona pod czytelnika w wieku nastoletnim i przez to niektóre jego aspekty mogą wydać się dość dziecinne czy naiwne, jednak otoczka magii oraz grozy to wszystko nadrabia. Nie powiem, by przy lekturze ogarnął mnie strach, ale zdecydowanie odczuwałam pewien niepokój. Jest to lektura w sam raz na długie, jesienne wieczory, w szczególności w okresie halloweenowym.
Trochę ubolewam, że ta historia nie ma zaplanowanej kontynuacji. Zakończenie jest bardzo intrygujące i bardzo chętnie poznałabym dalsze losy bohaterek w ich nowej rzeczywistości oraz ich dalsze próby z magią. Jednak równocześnie w pełni rozumiem chęć zamknięta tej historii w jednym tomie. Zdecydowanie jest to ciekawa pozycja, z którą fani młodzieżowych wiedźm mogliby polubić.

Si on ne peut pas nier une chose c'est que ce livre est vraiment très beau. Les illustrations sont variées dans les couleurs et se développent en plusieurs styles au fil des planches qui apportent une vraie richesse au récit et à l'ambiance de celui-ci.
J'ai adoré ma lecture ! On entre très vite dans l'histoire il n'y a pas d'introduction longue, on profite directement du plongeon dans la vie de nos quatre protagonistes Ève, Diane, Lily et Morgane qui ont toutes leur personnalité distinctes. Elles sont engagées, modernes, et se soutiennent. Leurs petites disputes entre amies donnent une touche de réalisme dans leurs relations, il y a beaucoup d'humour, les émotions de jeunes femmes et adolescentes qui traversent leurs épreuves chacune de leur côté et surtout ensemble. J'avoue que j'aimerais bien voir ce que donnerait cette histoire, ces quatre personnages et ces décors dans une version filmée. Quelle belle aventure, quel joli roman graphique
J'ai adoré ma lecture ! On entre très vite dans l'histoire il n'y a pas d'introduction longue, on profite directement du plongeon dans la vie de nos quatre protagonistes Ève, Diane, Lily et Morgane qui ont toutes leur personnalité distinctes. Elles sont engagées, modernes, et se soutiennent. The synopsis was really intriguing; the aspect of witchcraft appeals to me, however I didn’t enjoy reading this graphic novel. It started out good with the 4 girls reuniting after some unknown reason (it doesn’t mention why they stopped hanging out with one another). As the story progresses I just felt it was really rushed. They used witchcraft to save the tree, then moved onto growing flowers, then brewed a self-esteem potion and it just felt rather monotonous. There was no real background story and it felt as though things were thrown in to be relatable - Lily had a “thing” with a guy (that came across as a little manipulative), and Eve has a crush on a girl that’s not pursued as all they did was dance together. And of course the LGBT+ character has LGBT parents…. In all honesty I got bored about 40 pages in.
The cover design works beautifully and the artwork is incredible. It fits perfectly to the storyline. Truthfully it’s a good starter graphic novel for witchcraft but unfortunately it wasn’t my preferred read which was disappointing as I initially looked forward to reading it.

J’ai toujours aimé les bandes dessinées, et depuis l’année passée j’ai fait la connaissance ( oui bonjour) des webtoons..
même si je suis du genre chipoteuse et légèrement puriste sur les bords ,que rien ne remplacera le dessin papier.. ( bonjour rigidité mental)
j’aime énormément ce format.
Cela amène une autre dynamique, et je ne sais pas si c’est le cas pour tous les webtoons, ( mais je vais me baser sur les seuls que j’ai lu jusqu’à maintenant ) ils sont beaucoup plus long qu’une BD « standard »
Et quand j’aime un univers j’aime y rester, et je peux trouvé frustrant de finir un ouvrage en 20 minutes ( et pour ma part me fais culpabiliser )
Bref à la base j’étais là pour parler de Coven..
et tout ça pour dire « J’aimerai lire plus d’ouvrage comme celui-ci ! »
Les illustrations sont sublimes, les décors qui vont dans les moindres détails. Une colorisation sublime.
J’ai adoré l’histoire, j’ai trouvé le rythme bien mené, avec une tension qui montait crescendo, un suspens, trop de questions…
Et avec des touches de légèretés, des moments vraiment drôles.
J’ai vraiment apprécié la personnalité de chacune de ces quatre filles !
Je les bonus de fin… j’ai trouver ça tellement extra/génial/original

3.5 stars - A fun witchy-themed graphic novel told through stunning artwork and featuring four MC's who each have their own distinct personalities! I really appreciate that there was LGBTQIA+, larger bodied, and BIPOC representation too - we love to see ALL the diversity!
It did seem like the creators pulled from modern teen classics; Pop's Diner from Riverdale can be seen in the background and the four best friend's that are rekindling their friendship in high school gave strong Pretty Little Liars vibes. While this is a cute nod to those fandoms, I would've liked this to remain totally original.
Even though I don't have any outright negative thoughts surrounding this graphic novel there also isn't anything strongly pulling me towards a higher rating. If you're looking for a fast & fun read this will definitely provide that! (And here's hoping this becomes a series to get to know the entire coven better!)

J'ai adoré l'histoire ! On est avec quatre jeunes filles qui veulent sauver un arbre qui va se faire abattre. Malheureusement, leur idée de rituel magique tourne mal. Cependant, ce n'est pas ce que cela semble montrer. La fin va vous laisser sans voix !
Les personnages ont des personnalités uniques et attachantes. Les dessins sont magnifiques et l'histoire est bien développée.
Je suis quand même rester sur ma faim. J'espère un tome 2.

Sama nie wiem co myśleć i jeszcze waham się z końcową oceną, ale najbliżej mi do 3,5/5.
Szybko się czytało, ilustracje przyjemne ale sama historia nie urzekła mnie szczególnie. Od początku brakowało mi czegoś i do samego końca tak pozostało.
Liczyłam chyba na więcej magii i rytuałów samych w sobie. Książka przyjemna ale niczym mnie nie „kupiła” specjalnie… Liczyłam na jakiś ciekawy rozwój wydarzeń i możliwe plottwisty, ale czuję, że niczym mnie ta historia nie zaskoczyła ://

I loved reading this. It’s such a short and cute, yet supernaturally appeasing read if you’re in to spirits and witches. Although it didn’t end on a cliffhanger, it definitely left room to continue on the story and I really hope they do!
Coven is a short graphic novel/comic about four girls who use magic to try and save a local tree from being destroyed and end up with more than they bargained for. It’s very cute, very modern and oddly knocks the nail on the head for how friendships look nowadays.

I recieved an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Coven is an unobjectionable, if extremely middle of the road read. It feels a lot like somebody's first attempt at a webcomic: the characters aren't super well defined, the story kind of seems to trip over itself a little bit as it goes along, and there's some inconsistency with regard to the art- sometimes characters feel a bit "off model," or close-ups or awkward composition feels like it was put in place because the artist wasn't confident drawing the pose or angle that would have actually worked. Combined with slightly awkward panelling and some overstuffed dialogue bubbles, this definitley feels like it was drawn by an artist new to the medium. Not to say that there isn't potential here, though: the use of colour was thoughtful, and I loved the designs of our main gals: no same-face syndrome here, and a range of body types, fashion preferences, etc. helped them all feel unique.
In terms of the plot itself, this is pretty cookie-cutter YA urban fantasy fare, which is... fine, but definitley not very memorable. I think this could've worked better with three main leads- if not two- to let the characters breathe a little bit more and improve on the pacing. Their relationships also felt somewhat ill-defined: there wasn't time to establish their unique dynamics as pairs or really even get a sense of why these girls were friends (and even the narrative seemed to go back and forth on whether they remained close or used to be, and drifted apart?) I find I can't remember any of their names. It was nice to see a sapphic woc as a lead however, but again, the lack of focus on any of the characters individually means I can't dredge up any fondness for any of them.
Finally, the twist at the end was both a little bit predictable for me personally- it felt overly signposted- and... Arguably slightly undermined what little tension the book had managed to construct. This very much feels like the first volume in a series, as well, which makes for a slightly frustrating conclusion: I think that's what ultimately knocked this down from a three-star to a two-star for me.

Un roman graphique sur des sorcières qui m'a intrigué dès le résumé !
On suit 4 jeunes filles qui sont amies et qui veulent préserver un vieil arbre dans le parc de leur quartier. De peur de ne pas réussir à faire entendre raison aux promotteurs, elles décident de lancer un sort de protection sur l'arbre. Mais tout ne se passe pas comme prévu...
J'ai aimé suivre et découvrir les 4 personnages féminins qui sont pour le moins tous différents, aussi bien de part leurs physiques, que leurs caractères ou leur styles vestimentaires.
Niveau intrigue, certaines scènes sont prévisibles et très teen movie mais cela ne m'a pas dérangé du tout. J'ai aimé retrouver cette ambiance comme dans les films des années 90/2000 et il y a d'ailleurs beaucoup de références pop-culture de cette époque au fil des pages (The Craft, Buffy contre les vampires, Scooby Doo, Charmed, Michael Myers etc).
Le suspense monte de plus en plus et on se demande ce qu'il va advenir des filles et si elles vont réussir à défaire le sort qu'elles ont lancé.
Point de vue graphisme, j'ai bien aimé le style même si ce n'est pas un des plus beaux que j'ai pu lire (goût totalement subjectif et personnel). J'ai trouvé certaines planches très sombres et j'ai même du éclairer certaines pages avec la lampe de mon téléphone pour être sûre de ne pas rater de détails. Je pense que c'était intentionnel pour faire ressortie le côté magie noire et démoniaque de certaines scènes et planches. Le contraste entre les différentes parties du roman fait que je ne saurais pas trop dans quelle catégorie placer cet ouvrage : fantasy classique ou fantasy horreur ?
D'ailleurs je n'arrive toujours pas à déterminer où se situe l'histoire géographiquement parlant. Le lycée plonge dans une ambiance américaine mais les mères d'une protagoniste vont à Cancale... Pas que ce soit gênant mais cela m'a perturbée un peu.
En tout cas j'ai passé un bon moment de lecture et j'ai aimé cette histoire qui met en avant l'amitié, la sororité et la magie !

Welcome Back!
It’s been a busy week full of reading! (I am still kind of hoping I can make my Goodreads goal, but if I do not it’s okay, it’s more of a personal challenge for myself). The other day, I went ahead and picked up a witchy graphic novel E-ARC. (Thank you so much to the publisher for the E-ARC in exchange for my honest opinions). I have been having some fall vibes (I know we are just starting summer but fall is calling me)! So this graphic novel was perfect for that mood.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Four girls who all go to the same school and are kind of friends decide they are going to protect the town’s massive elm tree. There is a group wanting to get rid of the tree and no one else in town seems as passionate about the tree as the girls do. So they decide to take, what some might call, extreme measures. They decide to do a magical ritual. They are not sure it worked until later when the tree is safe but magic comes at a cost and the girls have no idea what they might have unleashed.
I had a fun time with this story, towards the end it seemed like this might be a series eventually, but I am unsure if this is happening (if it does become a series I would definitely give volume two a try). I really loved the art style of this graphic novel. Each of our main characters were unique and all had their own strengths. This graphic novel came out in January but I would definitely recommend giving it a try!

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina meets Totally Spies in this graphic novel that follows four friends as they dabble in a little witchery that goes awry.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one! Everything from the art to the story to the characters sucked me in. My favorite element was definitely the friendship between the four girls at the center of this story; it was really fun to see the realistic highs and lows of their relationships with each other—from getting on each other’s nerves, to making up and banding together to support one another. I also loved that they were unapologetically a group of teen girls. The scene where Eve asked them all to come over to get ready together before a party because she didn’t know what to wear was super cute.
My only complaint is that the plot twist at the end was predictable. There were ways that the authors could have hidden the ball a bit better earlier on so it would’ve been more of a surprise. Limiting interactions with Colette could have accomplished this. If we had just seen her for a bit at the beginning, she would’ve slipped right under the radar.
All in all, I had fun with this one and was excited to see that they left an opening for more volumes in this series. I will definitely be picking up any sequels in the future!

I was pretty confident going into this that I would enjoy it: cute art and a story about a bunch of teen girls experimenting with wicca? The Craft came out when I was a pre-teen and became an insta-favorite of mine and my friends, though we were nowhere near as cool as the girls in this comic (regardless of the writer trying to make them uncool, haha).
The comic even bluntly addresses the influence The Craft had on this story, with the characters mentioning it, and even watching it at one point. Another clear influence that is also mentioned in-story is Buffy the Vampire the Slayer, with one character's moms trying to get her to watch the show (the moms being Tara/Willow shippers for sure). The entire story felt very similar to the sort of monster-of-the-week of classic BTVS or Charmed, and gives strong nostalgia vibes but not too much. The main girls are all very much Gen Zers and the story straddles that line of nostalgia and present-day setting well, in my opinion.
I also really enjoyed the colorful art by Da Coffee Time and Christo - it was crisp and cute.
Overall a very enjoyable YA horror comic! I only removed one star because I wasn't thrilled with the ending - an abrupt cliffhanger. I hope that means a sequel, though!

Alors, ma première (je crois) critique en français… Wish me luck!
Eve, Diane, Lily et Morgane sont quatre lycéennes assez classiques. Elles ont chacune leur caractère et leur combat. Quand leur ville refuse de les écouter à propos d'un arbre qu'elles veulent sauver, elles décident de se retrouver et de jeter un sort pour le protéger… Mais des conséquences inattendues suivent cette action…
J'ai beaucoup aimé ce roman graphique. Les personnages étaient intéressants et j'ai aimé l'intrigue principale. Globalement, c'était un très bon moment et les illustrations étaient vraiment cools.
Il m'a fallu un peu de temps pour vraiment distinguer les personnages par leur prénom but j'ai fini par y arriver. Ma préférée était Eve mais les quatre filles ont vraiment retenu mon intérêt du début à la fin. Vraiment, un livre fun et sympa, j'aimerais beaucoup qu'il y ait une suite, surtout qu'il m'a semblée qu'il manquait quelque chose, surtout à la fin. La resolution finale s'est passée un peu vite pour moi. Et j'aimerais savoir comment elles gèrent leurs relations et leur sorcellerie dans le futur...

Jesienią lubię się zaczytywać w książkach z m*ocznym klimatem, które mnie pochłoną, wystraszą, zaangażują, przyprawią o dreszcze i sprawią, że będę chciał tylko więcej. I ta historia właśnie taka była. A w dodatku jest to komiks!
Często tej formie zarzuca się, że fabuła pędzi. Tutaj w ogóle tego nie zauważyłem. Akcja jest bardzo dobrze rozplanowana i choć całość czyta się niezwykle szybko, to czuć, że z każdym rozdziałem zagłębiamy się w fabułę, odczuwamy stopniowe budowanie napięcia, m*ocznej atmosfery i z dużym przejęciem przyglądamy się działaniom czterech przyjaciółek.
Ja na tym komiksie dosłownie kilka razy się wystraszyłem. Historia jest przemyślana, poszczególne sceny mają miejsce we właściwych momentach, dlatego uważajcie z beztroskim przewracaniem stron i bądźcie gotowi na sceny z dreszczykiem.
Jestem oczarowany tą historią. Aż szkoda, że prawdopodobnie jest to jednotomówka, bo bardzo bym chciał poznać dalsze losy tych bohaterek. Kreska również jest wspaniała, wzbogacona idealnymi kolorami. To wszystko razem współgra ze sobą fantastycznie i potrafi zachwycić jak nie jedna pełnowymiarowa powieść.
