The Acropolis

Rate this book
"We have a new assignment for you, Mr. Reinhardt."

These words are not comforting to me. At eighteen, I am a gargoyle who has been demoted because I broke the rules. Now I have a new mission, a new mark to protect. But I don't expect Emma Chase. I don't expect to question my own race. I don't expect to care for my own mark. And I am not prepared for what I find at The Acropolis.

I like that there's no unnecessary drama in this book. It's straightforward, the pace is fantastic.

I immidiately drawn toward Connor, the defiance brave Gargoyle. I am protective of Emma, the She-Demon with a heart of gold.

overall, it's probably not as epic as other fantasy saga, but it's intriguing. I'm looking forward to reading its sequels.

This book was gifted to me based on the Acropolis Book Blog Tour. So I decided to read it for review as a thank you, since hosting a book on my blog is not that much of a chore. Am I glad I did that! This is a fresh and new YA romance/paranormal book. The gargoyle was for me, a fresh new and exciting edge. The romance part, for a chance, was not love at first sight. No, this book is based on morals, prejudice and acceptance. I see the age restriction on Goodreads is 16 +, It is a pity, the language was not distasteful or that troublesome and the morals in this book should be ingrained into the youth as well as us elders. More than the fresh, edgy turn, the morals, the fast pace etc, more than all of this I found this book a fun read. I liked the characters and loved their development throughout the book. At the end of the book a really unsuspected surprise hits the reader and adds to the ever growing urgency to learn more about the life of Emma and her new found friends and mortal enemies.
I know I can only give a 5 * review rating. But that is on Goodreads and on Amazon. Personally I give this book an 8 * rating. It is fun, well written and engaging. But hey I need to run, I promised my best friend I would tell her if she could or NEEDED to buy this book. Guess which choice I am recommending.

The Acropolis by R.K. Ryals was a book that incorporated drama and action very well. There was enough action to keep you on your seat, while there was enough drama to constantly keep your mind moving. This book only got three stars due to the fact that I felt the sensory imaging could've been so much greater than there was. While there was really good imaging and passages within Ryals' book, but I felt that they were too few and spread out. In the end the book read fast, and had an original story line which kept you turning the pages.

3.5* would be better. We follow the journey of a young girl, who is going through the transformation of being half demon. With a sprinkle of romance, and few baddies to make that journey a rocky road from hell. Excellent adventure. Excellent characters. Written well. Recommended reading if you like YA fantasy.

In fact, I have never met anyone who didn't like Gargoyles. - Keith David

Conor Reinhardt is a gargoyle who has been demoted for breaking the rules. he is given a new assignment and a new mark to protect. Conor, though, is not expecting it to be Emma Chase. keeping in mind the protection of mankind, Conor must comply at all cost and bring Emma to a school called The Acropolis.
author R.K. Ryals' first book in the Acropolis series was an unexpected surprise for me and it was a very pleasant one.
she introduces the reader to a world of gargoyles and demons and i simply loved her take on these creatures.
the story is told in Conor and Emma's perspectives. their voices alternate throughout the book but it was not difficult nor confusing to follow since each chapter is marked with the name of the person who is speaking.
i really liked the writer's approach in developing the story and on how she focused more on the characters rather than the eponymous Acropolis. this worked very well for me. through her strong characterization, i was swept into the novel's plot from beginning to end.
the action scenes were done just right. they were not lame nor did they go overboard. even Conor and Emma's attraction for each other progressed naturally and was not cheesy at all.
i also liked the surprises and twists especially towards the end.
overall, i had a great time reading this book. i commend the author's imagination and her unique choice of heroes. it made me look at gargoyles in a different and positive light.

When I first read Redemption by R.K. Ryals, the character Connor was my second favorite, my first being Monroe. After reading The Acropolis I may have switched my favorites. The Acropolis is a spin-off from Redemption, taking the character of Connor and giving him his own story. The Acropolis takes place after Redemption, it's obvious by some of the storyline, but can be read as a stand-alone. It could make you want to pick up Redemption or want to dig into more of R.K. Ryals work.

Connor is a gargoyle, a Guardian, who has been demoted after some things that happened in Redemption. He's given a new mark, Emma Stone, and hopes to use this to work his way back up in the ranks. Emma is half Demon and is to be brought to The Acropolis, a school for half Demon, half mortal, children. With the help of his cousin Will, and another gargoyle named Roach, they are supposed to extract her without incident. As with any good book, there is never a "without incident". We wouldn't have a fun plot then!

This was a fast paced story, you didn't want to put it down for fear you would lose something! Where as Redemption took a little longer to pick up in the action part, there was none of that in The Acropolis. I loved the Connor/Emma pull and the drama that came along with it. I love how Will likes to find something to stand behind and go for it. Both Reinhardt boys put their lives on the lines for the hybrids and I can't wait for the next book in the series to find out if it'll work. Especially with the large cliff-hanger the author leaves you with at the end. Next I'll be digging into Ransom!

I was not paid for this review. The opinions stated here are my own and were in no way swayed. I downloaded this book on a free Amazon day. Thank you for taking the time to read! Have an amazing day. -Melissa

Never having read anything by Ms. Ryals before, I had NO idea what I was in for with this book! I hadn't read her previous two books in the Redemption Series, that takes place in the same universe, and features some of the same characters as ACROPOLIS. I remember being told that I would enjoy this book anyway, and it is so true!

The beginning sucked me in quickly with the introduction of both Conor and Emma. Two VERY opposite people who meet in extrememly crazy circumstances. They seem an unlikely pair at first, however, I could tell right away that, although they were so different, there was something about their personalities that would just go well together. Emma with her sweetness and loyalty (masked under intense fear) and Conor with that same loyalty but a little bit of "experience" that I felt could help Emma adjust to her new "life".

What I liked about the romantic aspect of this story, the most, is that even though Conor had to get over some of his previous prejudices just to accept WHAT Emma was, he actually becomes a much better gargoyle for it. And a better PERSON. He was already kind and a talented gargoyle but just opening up a little more made him even MORE so. And, in return, I think, knowing and caring for Conor, made Emma a stronger person. These two really did help to better each other.

I'm very much looking forward to the rest of this series and reading THE ACROPOLIS has inspired me to go out and get Ryals' Redemption Series, as well.

I give this book 4.5/5 stars.

I absolutely LOVE this book. I have been stuck in a paranormal reading rut lately, and while I try to give each book it's own time, this book definitely made my heart sing! I try to look at each book with a new eye, even if it happens to be the 15th werewolf/vampire book in a row that I have read. This book was a refreshing "new" paranormal book. The author is so skilled in her writing that you get fully engrossed in the book. I literally had to set timers when I read it so that I wouldn't spend HOURS at a time reading it and forget about obligations. The characters are so easy to relate to that I found myself laughing, crying and being outright mad during some of the scenes! RK Ryals weaves such an amazing tale that you can't help but want to read everything else she has out!! I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good paranormal story :)

The gargoyle spin isn't something you see a lot of, and I found it refreshing. Conor, one of many gargoyles tasked with protecting humans and, at times, other creatures is assigned to Emma's protection. Emma has no idea she's a half-demon and has a myriad of powers just waiting to be unleashed. Cute characters, lovely fantasy world, and great writing. Can't wait to follow the rest of the series.

I'm pleasantly surprised by this book, the plot sounded interesting but i didn't knew that i was going to get so much into it. I found the relationship hybrid/gargoyle pretty unique and i liked that. I can't wait to get to know more about the characters and their histories.

I knew this was Young Adult going into this book. Typically YA is not a genre I gravitate towards - I enjoy stories about young adults (older teens and young 20's), but if these young adults act like immature brats, that is, all hormone-y and angsty, then usually that's the death knell of the book for me.

Gratefully, "The Acropolis" is none of those things. Although I would shelve this book firmly as Young Adult Paranormal Romance, the book resonates with adult plot lines and sophisticated characters, both teenage and adult. In short, the world is caught in a battle of Evil v. Good, and gargoyles have always stood on the side of humanity against the evil Demons. As Guardians, they swear an oath to protect their charges against all costs. Some of these charges are Hybrids, the children of a human-Demon mating. Hybrids can turn good or evil, and the gargoyles seek to use the hybrids in their war against the Demons.

But not all gargoyles have the best intentions, it seems, and sometimes Demons have an alternate plan. The lines, it appears, have become blurred.

And then there's Emma Chase, a Hybrid who doesn't even know her own power. And Conor, the Gargoyle who's assigned to protect her.

Smart characters, no angst, great world-building. My kind of book.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I wasn't disappointed. I love paranormal/fantasy but I must admit this is my first gargoyle and demon adventure! It's YA so good for a younger audience but not written in a way to exclude any age group.
It's fast paced, funny and action packed. Anxious to dive right into the next book in the series!

This book is written in first-person present tense, which is extremely odd and took some getting used to.

That said, I absolutely loved the plot! I'm invested in not only the main characters, but the plight of the half-demons in a changing world. I'm definitely going to continue reading this series!

Good

A very interesting and intense story. I loved the characters and the plot had me flipping pages. The surprise at the end makes me want the next book now! There is some harsh language not suitable for younger audiences.

This was....awesome.

Song Choice: (yeah i am going to get so much crap for this but) Blurred Lines by Robin Thick, "Middle Distance Runner" by Seawolf, "They" by Jem

First Thoughts: So, Goodness its been a really, really long time since I started RK Ryals other series that happens in the same universe, i was almost i think 30% into the book before i realized it XD. Anyways I realize again how much I love her style, its not so sophisticated it feels like you are reading nonfiction, but its also very mature that you don't feel like its entirely YA - even NA it just feels classier, and yeah. Anyways this book - awesome.

Thoughts on Plot: So while i haven't finished the other series (which I mean i really should go back re-read the first and finish it because damn this woman can write) but I really liked the idea of this book. This isn't about what we expect the good guys to be and the bad guys to be. For the most part when I was reading this i was mad about the system, I wanted to hate Conor because he was acting like well sort of racist to the Hybrids. We got to see the world in two different points of view, we saw his, we saw Emma's. Granted I think there should have been a bit more backstory for Conor, sometimes his hatred was told to us, but never shown to us. I didn't really understand he always seem to be on Emma's side but then he would say he wasn't....okay so moving on. For the most part i enjoyed how the relationship developed. I liked what this book brought to the table and I think it was more of standing up for what was right even if its against everything you believe. i think this was a wonderful set up for a relationship that can continue to grow and i am damned excited about it

Characters:

Emma: She was awesome. I like really off the wall, strange main characters, they really bring in a new mix, and I loved her. I loved immediately finding out that she is LITERALLY afraid of everything, she is shy - extremely so - but it doesn't make her weak. Never, while she takes a bit to really go up and stand in front of everyone she does what she has to when she has to. She doesn't back down, she doesn't cower, she fights, and she is awesome. I really did like her, and even for being shy one would think she would be a bit socially awkward but she was pretty witty. She was a very complex character and I am seriously over the moon about her she was awesome!

Conor: He was interesting. I liked getting his thoughts in this book - if i am going to be perfectly honest I don't remember him from the other series, I remember the basics of that book which again i need to re-read. Anyways! He was a mixture of the want to be the best that he could be, he wanted to believe what he was doing right, but he does let his pride go, he steps back he looks at the bigger issues and he makes the really tough ass decisions. I don't know he is supposed to come off as the player boy, but I couldn't ever see him as that he was too serious, too mature to be anything like that, I think that was old Conor and we were meeting new Conor in this book and its cool. I did really like him but I am concerned about him slightly, what he had to do might destroy him. :/ only time will tell.

Will: I hope he gets a bit bigger part in the next book, he is really strong character, he has a lot of passion and a lot of guts <3

There were some characters i have a feeling will be causing all sorts of problems in the next book and i cannot wait - i am sure it will be kickass hahaha so no reallll cliffie, I figured out the last BIG surprise pretty early. :-)

You know how you read the first book in a series and you are so impacted by it that you worry the rest of the books in the series won't stack up. Well, this book is the first in a series, but it is a spinoff of Ryals' first Paranormal YA Romance series, Redemption. Ryals fully engaged me in the world of angels and demons created in Redemption. I rooted for the heroine and fell head over heels in LOVE with Marcas, the dark demon hero. Conor, the hero of this story, is heavily involved in the Redemption series as a potential love interest of Dayton Blainey. While I liked Conor's character, I wondered if he could stack up as a hero next to the image of Marcas I have built up in my mind. Unfair, I know, but I was comparing him from the beginning and hoping that he wouldn't let me down. I have to admit being nervous that this book wouldn't compare to the others.

Wow, I was so freaking wrong. This book was amazing.

At first glance Emma Chase is a weak heroine, but she has many layers and much depth. Her strength is not obvious and even by the end of the book it is clear that that strength is not even fully developed. Emma is going to turn out to be one badass chick and I can't wait to read book 2 and see that happen.

Conor is the star of the book, though, and goes from being the golden boy he was portrayed as in Redemption, to being a flawed and relatable guy. In the Redemption series, he falls for his mark (the half-breed angel he is supposed to be protecting) Dayton Blainey. This causes him to become demoted from Guardian to Escort, which crosses his path with Emma. Transporting her to The Acropolis, a school/prison for hybrid half humans/half demons should be a breeze, but Emma is no ordinary Hybrid. Lots of people want her dead, including Conor's own kind, The Gargoyles. What I love about this story is that a guy like Conor, who has been fighting demons his whole life and hates them intensely, is able to see past all that and find the good in Emma. It's almost like seeing a bigot fall in love with someone out of their race. It was a beautiful thing. After years of watching demons do horrible things and protecting mankind from them, Conor comes to realize that these hybrid demon kids have no say in the matter. They are only half-demon and didn't get to choose their parents. He goes from being their prison warden to being their hero. Beside Emma he is the ultimate leader and the two of them have already proven a force to be reckoned with.

As a couple Conor and Emma did not disappoint. Intensity and tension are two things Ryals does well.

I so love the tortured aspect of this. Their attraction is forbidden, yet they are drawn to each other uncontrollably. The plot twists in the end couple with the action to deliver a punched-in-the-gut sensation that I have been carrying with me since reading the last words. I cannot wait for the next installment. I have decided from now on to trust Ryals' judgement. I didn't think she could top Redemption...dangit, she made a believer out of me!

Its no secret that I went absolutely mental during and after reading the Redemption series. I absolutely went crazy nuts for Dayton (cause who doesnt love a potty mouth, dumdum addicted, bad ass chick with daddy & demon issues), Marcas (dark, broody hybrid demon & so smokin, hes got abs so hot you could cook a steak on!), Monroe (with all her wicca, sarcasm & movie quotes) and Conor (that gargoyle, charming as sin, heart on his sleeve, bestie of all besties), that I just knew I needed more of this world. Thank goodness R.K delivers with this spin off series based on Conor and the Gargoyes and a hybrid demon Emma who has no idea what is in store for her.

Life isnt about getting what we want. Its about turning the crappy cards were dealt into a winning hand,

At first I was shocked, Emma is SO unlike Dayton. She starts off all quiet and shy and petrified of her own shadow, thinking she is dying. She cries blood, has strength that sends doctors running, and a body temperature that you could only imagine, but dont be mislead people. She totally comes into her own. Who doesnt want to read about a chick that is so almost? A chick that can control a creepy demon creature aswell as a herd of crazy ass demons intent on taking her to hell? And how can you not love a girl that ends up in one of the most unfriendly schools but unites a group of greedy, power ranked hybrids to free them from the control of the Gargoyles intent on judging them by their race instead of as individuals? A chick who lived her life surrounded by everyone elses emotions.

Emma started off plain and ordinary. She ended up strong and extraordinary. I couldnt get enough. I loved seeing into the world of the Gargoyles and how they worked, even if I didn't love what I saw. Her blossoming romance with Conor has me on the edge of my seat wanting more. I loved the changing POV between Conor & Emma. I loved seeing what both of them were thinking. It made me getting to know both characters equally fulfilling. But mostly I loved the talk of emotions and the power that they could have over a person. I know I am not a hybrid demon, but I can certainly sense emotion if its thick enough, it can turn me into someone else, someone that tries to diffuse and distract, someone that battles not to shut down, someone that struggles to sleep at time. I must try the counting. I love that it works for Em. Anyway my point is, Emma was so different to Dayton, but never the less, I loved her. A lot. Thank goodness the next in the series, The Labyrinth is coming in only a few short days. It can't come fast enough for me!

Bravery is being afraid of something and facing it anyway. Emma is brave.

If you havent read the works of this amazingly witty author, you truly are missing out. Head over to Amazon and pick up Redemption for free, but if you want? This series could stand alone. Run, skip, hop, whatever. These books are so entertaining!

The Acropolis is the first installment of the Acropolis Series by R.K. Ryals. This is actually a spin-off series of The Redemption Series by the same author. If you've been reading my past few posts, you'll know how much I loved The Redemption Series! I am absolutely a fan of it! And because of that I have very high expectations for The Acropolis. I must say that the fans of The Redemption Series will NOT be disappointed! It is definitely a MUST READ!

The Acropolis is all about Connor whom we first known in The Redemption Series as Dayton's best friend and in this book we'll also get to know the very fragile Emma.

In this book, you'll get to know more about Connor in a much more deeper sense. It was very in depth that you cannot help but fall in love with him. He's the epitome of what we all want in our guy! He's protective and extremely loyal. The best part is he loves fiercely.

Emma, is a girl who had been dying for the past 6 years... or so she thought! The truth is she's not sick at all. She's just different. She's a very nice character to get to know. She's fragile and yet in her heart she's strong. I love knowing her.

I absolutely loved reading about Connor and Emma's romance. It was not rushed! It was a process. The chemistry was there and I loved how their romance unfolded little by little. It was very natural and I loved every minute of reading their interactions. It was very sweet and funny and at times sexy without forcing it. The feelings that Emma and Connor have for each other was presented well which makes it more enjoyable for the readers.

The pacing of the story was done well. The author didn't dragged the mystery of what Emma really is. It was revealed at the right time which makes it pretty exciting and not annoying nor irritating at all.

I also loved how Ms. R.K. Ryals developed the world that Emma and Connor lived in. It was pretty fantastic how she could create a very different world that is so not in our reality. Ms. R.K. Ryals has a way with using words that turns into sentences that paints a picture for us to see inside our heads. She has a way with words that is so vivid which makes this read so much better and enjoyable and even more heartfelt!

Overall, I absolutely loved this book! And I recommend this to all the book lovers who wants a quality book that has the ability to take you in a very different reality! I would recommend this book to the adventurous people who wants their romance to be as natural as it can be.

*BOWS DOWN* to this phenomenal new series. Just as spectacular as “The Redemption Trilogy”

I received this book from Author R.K. Ryals herself for my enjoyment and my fair and unbiased opinion in a review.

I was so sad when The Redemption series ended, I didn’t want to think that there was no more of our Dayton and Marcas. But, at the same time I did want ti see where Regina was going to take the rest of the characters and us along with them, to see how they would develop within themselves.

The Acropolis us the beginning of what’s to come next. Woot, woot and the main character is my favorite gargoyle Conor!! Our favorite gargoyle returns to captivate us, as his story is told. He’s a gargoyle this we know, he’s a guardian and a protector this we too know, but what is the rest of the story of him?

Conor has a new charge, (he misses his Dayton though) and her name is Emma Chase. Flighty, skittish and scared of everything and everyone. But, yes she has a reason to be this way.

Emma has been sick (or so they thought) for the last 6 years of her life, going from doctor to doctor, test after test… No one can/could figure out what was wrong with Emma. But, yes there were those that did. Why else would Conor who is a protector-guardian be assigned to Emma?

Yes, there are secrets that will come out about Emma, answers to questions sought after not only by the doctors, but by Emma herself for 6 years. Remember everyone has thought that she was dying.

Author Regina Ryals has come out with a bang in her new series “The Acropolis”, and after loving The Redemption Series I didn’t think it was possible to find again to find that my amazement and love for the characters to land smack right back into my hands with The Acropolis, but it did!! Although I had no doubt that Regina would turn out anything but a spectacular new series.

Regina has such a unique way of creating a phenomenal world, so different from our own, yet you can quite easily and pleasantly place yourself exactly in the same spot and emotions as her charters are.

The masterpiece of “The Acropolis” is so engaging that you will find yourself rooting for Conor and Emma just like you did for Dayton and Marcas. *flies high in sky, flaps wingz and cheers*

If book #1 in this series is any indication of whats to come to us from R.K. Ryals, then we are in for another mind blowing series!! YAY

This series is going to be A MUST READ, I highly recommend that you get on board and get started. I wait eagerly for book 2 to come out in print “The Labyrinth”

Title: Acopolis
Author: R.K. Ryals
Date of Release: March, 28th, 2012
Number of Pages: I read it on my kindle, and it didn’t have pages.
Source: ATOMR for review on blog tour!
Summary from Goodreads:
"We have a new assignment for you, Mr. Reinhardt."

These words are not comforting to me. At eighteen, I am a gargoyle who has been demoted because I broke the rules. Now I have a new mission, a new mark to protect. But I don't expect Emma Chase. I don't expect to question my own race. I don't expect to care for my own mark. And I am not prepared for what I find at The Acropolis.

Review: I can not freaking believe what happened in this book. IT WAS SO GOOD!! So I tend to stay away from books that switch point of views. This novel switches from Connor to Emma and does so brilliantly. I really couldn’t ask for more. R.K. Ryals has created a mind blowing new world that I want to be a part of!!

Connor is the perfect bad boy with an inner softness. We get to see how he became who he is today through the novel. Emma is shy and thought she was dying. She’s okay with dying it’s living that scares her the most. Her fears were intriguing! I liked watching her come out of her shell and scramble to grasp who she is.

The plot is pretty intense. I highly enjoyed that aspect. There was lots of fighting and action. The love scenes were actually minimal (even though there are those intense kiss scenes swoons), but the emotional intensity that the author conveys had me at the edge of my seat.

To be quite frank here guys. This is the first book besides a textbook I have finished since coming to college in August. I am thrilled that this was the one I read. I need more ASAP. You can count me in to be reading Acropolis #2. I’ll probably even be stalking the author and her other works. It was just that good.

Very enjoyable trip back to Ryals' world first revealed in the Redemption Series! This book follows Connor, Dayton's friend from Redemption, as he learns a little more about himself and exactly what it means to be a gargoyle and a protector. He also learns that being good or bad isn't quite as cut and dry as he was taught. This book is in many ways a story of tolerance and acceptance with Connor seeing a different path open up for him due to his relationship with his new "mark" and the way she sees the world.

Connor is a good guy. That sounds bland, but he is good-natured and has a good heart. He also is willing to listen to others and learn new things even if they go against firmly held beliefs. One of the things that I really like about him is his ability to embrace his own past, accept it, and move forward. He's made mistakes but he doesn't let those decisions rule him and he doesn't hide from them either. It definitely shows an admirable strength of character.

Emma is Connor's mark, meaning that he is to protect her as she leaves her human existence and comes to terms with the fact that she is a human/demon hybrid. She is sent to a school for those like herself where she is supposed to learn to channel her demon powers for good. Her whole life changes in the blink of an eye but instead of wallowing, she puts her head down and moves forward. She doesn't think much of her abilities but she definitely has courage and a strong moral compass.

All in all, The Acropolis is an exciting book with lots of action, a burgeoning romance, and more keys to the puzzle regarding a potential battle between Heaven and Hell. I definitely look forward to reading the next book.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this book. The synopsis is intriguing and gets you wondering so I thought, why not. I love the idea of gargoyles being real, they’re like vampires, cool, sexy, distant. Or should be! So, I picked this up without any preconceptions or idea of what to expect. And I was quite happily impressed.

I read this during Dewey’s 24 hour Read a Thon and it was so nice to have something that was easy, a bit romantic and very different. There are gargoyles and there are also demons so this short read was also perfect for October.

The characters are really interesting as well. I was really curious about Emma from the start and you are given more and more reasons to be curious about her. R.K. Ryals doesn’t give much about her characters but the bit she gives makes you want more. Emma and Conor are intriguing enough on their own but I absolutely loved Deidra and the Drex!

Deidra is an imp that clings to Emma’s kindness. Being an imp she’s a bit of a trickster so she’s gotten mostly everyone mad at her at one time or another but it’s to a point where Deidre has no friends. It’s so sad and she just seems so cute, I just want to hug her! Demon or not! And then there’s Ace. Of course I would fall in love with a huge dragesque type of demon. But he’s cute in my mind. I just can’t help myself, really.

All in all, really easy read with a good plot. I’m looking forward to number two. This definitely ends with answers but there were more questions in my mind that need answering!

As a spin off, it is good, but I like the Redemption series better (so far). I'm glad Conor gets his own books as he is really very likeable. I also like how the books tie in somewhat to the Redemption series. You get some of the characters like Luther and Ethan in this book, and I'm really liking Will and Deirdre. I don't love Emma in the same way I did Dayton, but she is growing on me. I guess I just never pictured Con with someone as meek as Emma, but I think she'll grow and I am looking forward to book 2. I did read this book after Ransom, but it didn't detract in any way from either book.

Con will make choices that will change his life and definitely explains his appearance and attitude in Ransom. His relationship with Dayton results in his being demoted and unexpectedly assigned to Emma, but just as an escort. Emma is a half demon half human teenager who isn't aware of what she is because she was adopted as a baby and raised by human parents. Unfortunately, her powers are growing and demons have become aware of her and who her real mother is. Con isn't happy with the new assignment, but he is responsible and figures he can earn back his guardian role. However, he doesn't count on getting turned on his ears. Con has spent his whole life hating demons and now he starts to care for a half demon and will risk it all to keep his people from killing her.

Again, I love how this series gets intertwined with the Redemption series especially at the end when the SOS gets involved, and Con learns who Emma's father is.
