Paces and Leaps! Rating 3.4/5

First published here - http://tiredlife.com/2019/12/02/paces-and-leaps/

A riveting start to a series for which, as a reader, I have high hopes. Clara Fitzgerald is most certainly my new binge.
The narrative is Agatha Christie-esque and hardly takes a page to catch up. We are introduced to Clara with a thoroughfare into her everyday life in the first four-odd chapters. She is a budding detective, living with her invalid brother Tommy and a clever maid Annie. When she started the agency, she didn’t think murder. It was robberies, property issues or cheating spouses. But now with a murdered clairvoyant whom the police suspects Clara killed and a penniless widow in the scene, our heroine realizes she has to take matters into her own hands and learn on the job. The trio - Clara, Tommy and Annie, go for it, all guns blazing. The clairvoyant and her husband's hidden past is discovered, the widow's pride is about to shatter and then there are opium-laced sleeping draughts and maids' secrets.

Quite like the Miss Marple mysteries, it manages to throw you back to a time when means of truncated communication were yet to evolve. The small town feel is endearing; everyone knows everyone. But is it indeed as idyllic as it appears? As Clara unwraps layers, secrets tumble. The book introduces a maze of characters, some of which I am certain will recur and develop as I wade my way through the series.

A word - The series is set post WWI, so don’t be too taken in by the abject and vocal prejudice towards women.

The first half of the book is gripping and sets the tone of the mystery. At one point the reader wouldn’t know what to expect in the forthcoming pages, it could be a thriller, horror or magical realism. That’s how it lures and your journey with Clara and her mates begin. The books ends on a positive note, with Clara still shaken by the events, yet open to a new role.

Why only 3.4 then? A good mystery need not even out or justify bad deeds or imbalanced results. Shit happens. The few instances where this happened seemed a bit forced. Secondly, the heroine need not be adored and liked by everyone. Maybe the author wasn’t sure if a series would succeed, hence the loose ends were tied with the first one itself.

I am all set for the next adventure!

Clara Fitzgerald is a private investigator in Brighton in the 1920s. She lives with her brother Tommy who was injured in the Great War and is now confined to a wheelchair. One snowy day a Mrs Wilton arrives on her doorstep asking her to try and work out what a collection of riddles mean. She believes they come from her dead husband via a medium - Mrs Greengage - and once unravelled they should tell her where he buried some treasure.

The case - taken against her better judgement - leads Clara and Tommy into the world of mediums, talking parrots and murder. I enjoyed this quirky mystery. Clara and Tommy are interesting characters as is the police Inspector Clara gets to know.

If you're looking for a new series of historical mysteries this might be the one for you. It is well written and the characters are lively and interesting. The ending was not at all what the reader might expect but it did fit the story.

A very gentle murder!

This was very much a gentle read with a whodunit thrown in. The era was 1920s in Brighton and it was lovely to read about Brighton back then. As for the time period and reading about the after effects of WWI and how everyone coped back then. This was very much the focal point of this story. There were however a lot of red herrings along the way. As for the main characters you can't help but like Clara as she struggles with her own detective agency with the help of her brother who had served in WWI despite being crippled. As the murder take a clairvoyant, her husband, a woman missing her husband and a supposed treasure hunt! It was a great read but would have liked a bit more gusto to it. However it doesn't stop me from reading the rest of the series!

I’m not sure why I didn’t give up on this book after a dozen pages, the start of the story it seemed to take for every to get to the point and when it did it was nonsensical. Eventually the story got going and it appeared that Clara had some potential.
It turned out she wasn’t a particularly good investigator, but she was tenacious and I quite liked her partnership with her maid. By the end of the book I still liked her and thought she was worth another look so I will try the next book in the series.

This is a female sleuth story set after WWI. Clara lost her parents in the war and her brother Tommy came back an invalid. To make ends meet she opens up a private investigation company. Her first client is a desperate widow who has fallen for the scam of a so-called medium. When this medium is murdered Clara and her client are among the suspects. So Clara starts investigating herself.

I really enjoyed this book. On one hand, it shows the desperation after WWI and the effects on society quite well. On the other hand, this is one of the first sleuthing books I’ve read in a long time where I didn't figure out the culprit in the first three chapters. When the killer became apparent I had to sit down and think about his motive because there was the possibility that I was being led astray. When I figured it out I was relieved that it wasn't something completely illogical. Let it be enough that the behavior of the victim and the killer and their motivations weren't clean cut and also reflected that period in history.

My one minor criticism is that the author apparently wanted to tie up all the loose ends and the ending seemed a little rushed and maybe a little stuffed.

considering the low price I was positively surprised by this book and I'm going to continue reading this series.

This was an okay read, but it should have been much better. I loved the premise, a 1920s female detective in the aftermath of WWI, but to be honest, I don't think I'll be going back for more. I found the writing style quite flat, and the characters too, a bit flatly-drawn, which is a bit of a problem when you're writing a series. The murder mystery itself and the investigation surrounding it felt quite unbelievable, and the part of the police inspector in particular, was for me too obviously a plot device.

But my main problem with this book was that it was stuffed full of grammatical errors and typos, and read as if it hadn't been copy edited. Like a few other reviewers on Amazon, I found this really irritating, and that's the main reason I won't, unfortunately, be going back for more of Clara.

A quite reasonable mystery spoiled for me by the dialogue. Contrary to popular belief, contractions like 'didn't' or 'can't' have been with us since Adam was a lad, not just since the 60's. Not using them makes the characters sound as if they're reading from an academic thesis rather than talking naturally (just look at the dialogue from anything written post 1900 if you do not believe me!). Add to that the cardinal sin of having characters saying 'd' when they mean penny or pennies (and yes, I'm old enough to remember proper pre-decimal currency), and you have dialogue that shouts out 'I'm trying to make this sound in period' rather just telling us what the characters are saying. On balance, sufficiently disappointing to make me give the rest of the series a miss.

Very enjoyable

I wasn't expecting to enjoy this book so much. I like to have a book to read before I go to sleep. I found myself drawn in by the characters and their lives as well as the case itself.... I very much want to know what happens to them next as well as trying to solve the next mystery.

Very generous two stars. Only because the author can put a competent sentence together it’s not a one.
But everything else is quite bad: unpleasant protagonists (and too many of them), silly plot, manipulative fishing for emotions.
Starts with a preposterous premise and ends even more preposterously, having set up blatant sequel hooks in between.

I read a Clara Fitzgerald Christmas mystery last Christmas* and, looking back, decided I had rather liked Clara, Tommy et al - so decided to go back and start at the beginning. And I'm glad I did!

*Gosh, doesn't life fly past! Actually it was 2 years ago....

I just didn't really get into the story. The characters seemed too anachronistic for me - Clara too feminist, Tommy too Zen, and so on.
However, I read it all the way through, and I was interested enough to want to find out the "who dunnit"

Fast Read

A pleasant read but not memorable. Perhaps the author’s purpose was to depict a time when women were first braving employment in unexpected and unexplored livelihoods. Everyone in this book was a bland version of characters that were never developed.

Good read

I enjoyed this. Well constructed. Thoughtful characterisation. Shame about the American phrases, spelling and idioms which detracted from the context.

I really enjoyed it

Set after the Great War, Clara's lost her parents to a zeppelin raid and is looking after her brother Tom who's returned from the trenches unable to walk. Finding that their inheritance only covers the most basic costs in keeping the family home and being naturally inquisitive Clara sets herself up as a private detective mostly helping with trying to track down the whereabouts of lost soldiers and domestic matters.

When Mrs Wilton arrives at her door with a rather strange request things liven up considerably. The widow is a spiritualist and has been visiting a medium to try and find out where her departed husband has hidden the family money. Clara suspects that Mrs Greengage, the medium, is a charlatan preying on the vulnerable Mrs Wilton who's struggling to make ends meet. The medium is giving her riddles, at 3 appointments, to solve to find the "treasure" and Clara really doesn't believe it's anything more than a ploy to take what little money Mrs Wilton has left.

Agreeing to join Mrs Wilton at a seance, with her brother along for the entertainment, the parrot (yes, parrot!) Mrs Greengage uses as a conduit to the other side drops dead. They all leave without any more clues.

The next day Mrs Greengage's body is found shot through the heart by their maid. The husband, a meek little man suffering from agoraphobia following his time in the trenches, has slept through the whole thing apparently having taken a heavy sleeping draught.

With a past that's meant she's had to move away from Eastbourne and start again, Mrs Greengage certainly has enemies but did they feel so bitter that murder was the only option? Or had she pushed another client too far?

Clara is persuaded and encouraged to dig around by Inspector Park-Coombes when she manages to find out more information than he can in his official capacity.

Can Clara solve the murder case and find Mrs Wilton's "treasure"?

Enough twists and turns for an enjoyable, light-hearted read.

Mediocre

Rather muddled up! At the start it says that the clairvoyant had 'witnessed' a Mr Hansom, like the cabs, committing a murder but then it becomes Mr Bundle! Confusing? Absolutely! Who on earth is Mr Hansom??? Also Clara thinks she is extremely clever finding that the cufflink next to the dead body belongs to the husband,so he must be the killer, but he lives in the house and could have lost it anytime in the parlour! So this is not evidence but the author seems to think it is! As for Clara originally thinking it was a suicide when the police said it wasn't was just a waste of pages! There was no gun found at the scene! So it was impossible that she had shot herself!
The use of 'was sat' and 'lay down' in the present tense instead of 'was sitting' and 'lie down' were very annoying as they are both grammatically incorrect and only used by people whose command of the English language is weak.

I don't do book reviews

I don't do book reviews like you keep seeing, as I find that some give too much of the plot away and I personally hate that, as it makes the book not worth reading. I much prefer to take the authors back cover write up as a review as it can either intrigue you enough to read the book of provide you enough information to make you decide that the book is not for you.
My review rules are: The more stars, the more I liked it.
If there are too many typos or errors the less stars I give
If the storyline or plot is poor or contains too many errors, the characters are too weak, the ending lacking something, then the less stars I give.
Simple, uncomplicated and to the point without giving anything away.
Some of the books I read have been given to me by the author as a pre-release copy and this does not bias my reviews in any way.

Really really enjoyed this book, despite the couple of accidental Americanisms!! Believable, likeable characters. Good plot, a few red herrings but very Agatha-Christie-esque!

Couldn’t put this down once I’d started it and on to the second book of 23!

Won’t give you any spoilers but will hint that……. The “treasure” made me cry!

I’m hoping Clara gets together with Oliver Bankes and Tommy gets together with Annie but only time will tell!

If you enjoy Agatha Christie’s then you will enjoy these books so what are you waiting for?!

Memories of the Dead is an easy read. It’s the first in a series of books with Clara Fitzgerald as a female detective, highly unusual in 1920’s England. The characters are mostly good people but they do not develop as the story progresses. The plot is o.k.. If you like cosy murder mysteries you will probably like this book, but it’s a bit too twee for me.

A mystery much like Lady Hardcastle.

Clara Fitzgerald is a woman detective in post WW1 Brighton, England. She is also caring for her brother who was crippled in the war.

Mrs. Wilton hires Clara to find a treasure she feels sure her husband left for her before he was killed in the war.

Mrs. Wilton turns to a psychic to channel her late husband.

Harmless little mystery story. Murderer was who I expected but the side story and the characters are pleasing. A period charmer, if you like the 20's and deco. Life this one is for you.
