He began drawing manga at an early age; while he attended college, the publisher Shueisha recognized his talent. Togashi has authored numerous manga series in different genres during the past three decades. He is perhaps best known for writing and illustrating the YuYu Hakusho and Hunter × Hunter series, both of which have been published in the popular Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the author of Sailor Moon.

Yu Yu Hakusho Volume 4
Esse volume vai dos cap 27 ao 35 e finaliza o arco do torneio da genkai e começa o arco da cidade do além esse volume foi muito bom todas as lutas do torneio eu gostei muito o anime foi bem fiel ao manhã nessa parte e o início da cidade do além é bem bom também com Hiei e Kurama aparecendo mais um vez só que agora como aliados do yusuke juntos com Kuwabra que também se juntou para eles destruírem a flauta maligna e salvar o mundo humano e já tivemos a primeira luta que dói Kurama vs Gembu o Monstro de pedra muito incrível Kurama lutando e tô ansioso pelas próximas lutas.

Don't have much to say about this volume. Pretty much standard shonen in every way. Maybe you had to be there at the time to really appreciate it, but this doesn't really make me feel strongly one way or the other. I like Yusuke and Kuwabara a lot and the book doesn't do anything poorly, so it's a 3/5

This volume introduces a variety of new abilities that feel like Togashi is getting ready to invent Nen. Musashi can suppress his energy, but that's not really anything too new since it would have happened in Dragon Ball already. Kuwabara can turn his aura into a blade, which is like Transmutation. Kibano can bring his aura into his body to increase muscle mass, like an Enhancer. Rando is able to make an Aura Web, which arguably has properties of both rubber AND gum...!?
It's always odd re-reading this series and seeing how fast it actually moves. The fight between Yusuke and Rando is only two chapters!

Este tomo tiene el final de la saga del mini-torneo de Genkai y el comienzo de la saga de las Cuatro Bestias Sagradas. No es tan redondo como los primeros dos tomos ni tan bestial como lo serán los tomos siguientes, pero sigue siendo un muy buen manga de género.

Ah here we go! The training arc is complete and we get to the 4 artifacts held by the demons arc!
So after a pretty funny and different wrap up of the training arc we get right into the demon arc. This has Hiei, Yusuke, Kurama, and Kuwabara all teaming up. The have to take down 4 demons, they each get their time to shine. Yusuke has been training, Kuwabara has his own weapon, Hiei is...well he's a dick, and Kurama gets to show off his fighting style in this volume.
A enjoyable battle volume as we get to see everyone shine some. It moves quickly, some funny moments, and enjoyable character growth. A 4 out of 5.

me llama la atención como los tomos empiezan con una situación que termina en la mitad (el torneo para ganar las técnicas de genka) y los últimos capítulos del tomo empiezan o retoman otra cosa (la visita a la ciudad de los demonios, y encima se vuelve a mostrar a hiei y kurama). me parece una forma efectiva de mantener los cliffhangers y de que no se vuelva pesado cada arco.
como disfruto de esta traducción al español. en serio es un muy graciosa, me encanta como los diálogos han quedado tan naturales: literal son solo pibes de secundaria que les encanta pelear. y si bien todavía no hay mucho desarrollo de ninguno, me encanta que ya tengamos al elenco principal completo. qué buen tomo.

Kurama is so cute, and I like the development of Kuwabaras character. It’s crazy dude was drawing this when he was 26. Over all the character designs and panels are much more complicated and detailed for YYH than in his later more simplistic art for HxH. just seems like so much work

Great manga series i enjoyed reading the tales of the spirit detective. A must read for manga lovers everywhere.

One of my big reading goals for the new year is to read a bunch of my childhood favorite manga for the first time in nearly 20 years to relive the nostalgia and see how they hold up. First up is Yu Yu Hakusho!
Yusuke Urameshi is a hardass teen delinquent that loves skipping classes, smoking cigarettes, disrespecting authority and throwing hands with the toughest gangs in the halls and on the streets. He’s hated by almost everyone around him and he knows it. When he’s killed after pushing a child out of the way of an oncoming car, he’s surprised to find from the afterlife that he has more people that love him than he ever realized after attending his own funeral as a ghost.
Against all odds, Yusuke makes a deal with the angel of death to turn his deviant behavior around in exchange for giving him another chance at life with his friends. He must prove himself that he’s worthy of being brought back to life by becoming a spirit detective, saving the lost souls of sorrowful ghosts one good deed at a time.
The spirit world is more complex than Yusuke realizes, however. He’s soon wrapped up in a world of cutthroat demons, evil spirits and other dark beings that have a bone to pick with him. While performing good deeds to save the living and the dead, Yusuke also finds the chance to put his supernaturally-enhanced martial arts abilities to use by fighting powerful paranormal foes from underworld societies.

Yu Yu Hakusho is extremely nostalgic and has a lot of appealing factors. The hilarious banter between Yusuke and his band of badass bros is the forefront of the series. Kuwabara is a lovable goofball who tries to mimic the tough guy antics of Yusuke while constantly revealing himself to be a huge softy with a heart bigger than his fake ego. Hiei is the classic edgy antihero that softens up and becomes gradually more sympathetic as you learn more about his tough upbringing. Kurama is pure class and elegance, his wits and tongue are as sharp as his looks. Then there’s the sassy, beautiful and hilarious Botan who acts as the grim reaper and leading lady. Quite the memorable crew.
Another great thing about the series that may seem odd to point out is the beautifully drawn 80’s inspired fashion. The characters change outfits almost every chapter and they always look clean and refined. It’s hard not to appreciate the style throughout the series. This coupled with the witty banter, crazy martial art demon fights, self-aware humor and fast paced story arcs with lots of action make it a pretty fun series.
While the series is simple and enjoyable, the story, world and villains aren’t that well made in my opinion. Everything seems made up on the fly with little logic or build up. The story and battle arcs get very repetitive and the second half of the series feels like a massive rehashing of everything we’ve already seen. The final arc and ending were unsatisfying and anticlimactic in my opinion. It introduced a bunch of new concepts out of nowhere and then did absolutely nothing with them. Then the series ends with a big cliffhanger with no real resolution.
Overall, I actually enjoyed the calm and relaxed chapters and subplots where it focuses on the main cast of characters bonding and hanging out with each other over the main plot, the battle arcs and the forgettable second half. I think the first arc of the story where it’s just Yusuke and Botan solving mysteries and saving the lives of lost souls was actually the best part of the entire series. The constant focus on battling mundane villains, training arcs and tournament arcs took away from the otherwise lovable group of protagonists.
Not as good as I remember from my childhood, but a fun and engaging series overall that’s easy to read and can lift your spirits when you’re feeling down.

En este tomo continuamos con la competencia para ser el discípulo de Genkai, pasando esta vez a los típicos combates eliminatorios 1 vs 1.
Contrario a los protagonistas promedio de animes de peleas, Yusuke logra llegar a la final no por demostrar grandes habilidades o persistencia, sino por suerte y pelear de forma poco convencional (diria pensando fuera de la norma, pero Yusuke no piensa mucho que digamos).
Kubabara brilla en la primera ronda, mostrandonos una vez mas que no es un humano comun, y tambien a él porque ni el mismo lo vio.
Pero es finalmente Yusuke quien termina ganando y elegido como discípulo, aunque se habia olvidado era el premio.
Tenemos un pequeño salto temporal hasta que Urameshi regresa de la tortura de entrenamiento de Genkai, de inmediato notamos la diferencia que ha tenido. Incluso lo vemos directamente en accion lo mucho mas fuerte que se volvio, aunque sigue siendo el mismo de siempre.
Por lo que volvemos a sus deberes como detective del mundo espiritual. Una gran amenaza pone en peligro a toda la ciudad y probablemente mundo, por lo que Yusuke debe ir a recuperar un objeto directamente de la guarida de los malos. Y aunque al principio parece que Kubabara es el unico aliado que tendra, en seguida se suman dos viejos conocidos. Esta parte me recordo a los clásicos videojuegos de antes, de recorrer un castillo, con pequeñas trampas y mini boss en el camino. Aunque solo se enfrentaron a uno de los 4 supuestos villanos, tocara ver el siguiente tomo para saber que ocurre.

God damn, I do not remember this manga moving so fast!
The final round of Genkai's test is a tournament, where the first three battles are quickly resolved in one chapter. The next few battles take about a chapter and a half each. Randou is revealed, conveniently as the last opponent in the battle. Yusuke, being the protagonist, wins without too much trouble, and his training under Genkai happens off-screen. We then jump almost immediately into the Saint Beasts Arc, during which Hiei and Kurama reappear as new allies, setting the standard for the future of the manga.
To continue being silly by guessing at YYH characters' Nen types: We don't really see Kuroda or the Chinese guy do anything, so it's hard to say for them. Musashi doesn't do much in terms of special attacks, but he seems capable of Zetsu, In, and En. Kibano is clearly an Enhancer. Kazemaru is an Emitter, with some talent in Manipulation for his shuriken. I guess Randou would be a Specialist, since his ability to copy techniques is like a variant of Chrollo's book. I guess Kurama is a Manipulator, as he's shown to transform an actual rose into his whip - I couldn't remember last volume if he wielded real roses or summoned them. Genbu... I have no idea. He actually just has Pica's Devil Fruit from One Piece.

Something that I'm realizing while rereading this series is how little I cared for the earlier arcs. Not to say they're bad, there's nothing objectively wrong with them, but this volume finishes with the start of the The Beasts of Maze Castle arc and aside from the banter between Hiei and Kuwabara I straight up don't care. Maybe it's because I watched the anime for so many years on repeat that certain don't faze me anymore, but it's kind of disappointing finishing one arc, starting another, and not getting any emotional response.
That being said, there were some highlights from this volume. I never realized how well executed Rando was in terms of a demon stealing techniques; he used so many different kinds and was such a quick study too, definitely didn't give him enough credit when I initially watched his battle with Yusuke. As I said earlier, I love the banter between Hiei and Kuwabara and am looking forward to more as the arc progresses. Genkai is a boss, as usual, and I just love her so much even though she doesn't really do much in this volume.
Overall, not a bad volume, but I'm not enjoying this to the extreme degree that I thought I would. Maybe that'll change later, no clue, but I'll keep reading to see how things change.

A book that definitely ramped up the fighting. Yusuke takes out his first opponent in tournament style fight by slipping a cigarette on an opponent’s jacket so that way he could see him in the dark and smell him. Kawabara defeats his opponent by conjuring a sword made of energy he didn’t know he could do. Kawabara ends up loosing to a demon named rando disguised as a guy competing in the challenge, rando shrinks Kawabara and crushes him. Yusuke takes on rando in a difficult battle in which the only way Yusuke wins is because rando uses a spell he learned without realizing that it has a way of back firing on to him. My favorite part of the fight is when rando spits out webs made of energy to tangle up Yusuke and conjure fish from the demon realm to eat him. Later in the book Yusuke and Kawabara team up with the other two main characters to take down 4 demons in the demon realm. Kurama takes out the fist demon who is a rock monster that can transform into the very ground he stands on, kurama defeats him by summoning his rose whip that can cut through steel. The rose whip also freshens the air so he can smell anyone’s scent and also because he’s a thief he can locate hidden items such as the demons heart location. Overall a great volume and my favorite so far.

This is another excellent entry in the Yu Yu Hakusho manga.
We see Yusuke make new friends and fight new foes. He also goes someplace new. If you like progression then this is the manga for you.
The only thing that's weird is the part from the author writing a section in this book called "The Rambling Diary: Part 4" about a kid staring under a teenage girl's skirt, and the author saying he would probably have done the same, and then later realizing the woman with the kid was his mother. It's not clear if the author is talking about the same woman.
This is creepy. Very creepy. I know the author wrote this in 2004 but there was no need for him to put that in the book. Also, I'm Chinese-American, so don't make excuses for the author being Japanese. That doesn't excuse you from pretending like it's okay to look up a teenage girl's skirt from the ground level (if she's on the stairs) since that's invasion of privacy and sexual harassment.

This is a perfectly cromulent volume of shonen manga. The focus shifted almost totally away from the spirit world detective to a straightforward fight manga. So it feels a bit like something like Dragon Ball Z, but much speedier. I like all the dumb luck Yusuke has in overcoming obstacles. Kuwabara has grown into a nice comic relief sidekick to Yusuke. I wish Botan had more time on the page, though.
The volume gets split between two story arcs. The first half wraps up the plot about rooting out a demon trying to obtain Genkai's spirit powers. The second half begins a story about stopping demons from attacking the mortal world, which sees the return of a couple characters. Four demons, four heroes; one can guess how this war of attrition will work out. That story is left for volume 5, though.
This is basically the comfort food of manga.

The end of Genkai's training arc! The design of Rando is pretty neat. It gets a bit dark towards the end, with Rando's evil spells actually feeling threatening, but I like the creative ways fights are solved. Here is Yusuke's ultimate move, the rei gun! Watch him use it immediately and then spend the rest of the fights in this arc trying to figure out new ways to compete- some of those are 'grow stronger in the heat of the moment' because this IS a shonen after all, but he uses his environment and lots of small tricks to make up for it. And I love Yusuke and Kuwabara together! Their rivalry pushing each other is great.
Then we get to them invading a demon castle, and it looks like we're doing 1v1 fights as everyone makes their way through. I'm happy to see some familiar faces return, and interested in seeing how Togashi ups the stakes and keeps the battles interesting.
Then we get to them invading a demon castle, and it looks like we're doing 1v1 fights as everyone makes their way through. I'm happy to see some familiar faces return, and interested in seeing how Togashi ups the stakes and keeps the battles interesting.

Se no volume anterior de Yu Yu Hakusho o leitor já pode sentir um aumento na ação e uma grande redução nas explicações maçantes, nesse volume a ação impera e o dinamismo acaba sendo o ponto forte dessa edição.
A maior parte desse volume ainda se passa no torneio que definirá quem receberá os ensinamentos da Mestra Genkai e, paralelo a isso, descobrir qual dos competidores é Randou, o demônio que assassinou 99 almas e que busca as técnicas da Genkai para aprimorar os seus poderes.
O decorrer do torneio se faz de forma dinâmica de modo que, mesmo com muitas lutas, não seja algo cansativo de se ler. Algumas soluções são bem engenhosas enquanto outras caem mais para o lado cômico que a série se permite fazer.

Once again, the action continues to pick up and we start seeing new and interesting abilities, alongside some new monsters and creatures. What I like though is that ultimately fights are won based on wits not brute strength (so far at least). I also like Yusuke continuing to become less cynical, becoming more trusting and positive. You can really tell his confidence in his abilities has gone up since his training as well. The new arc doesn't have the most gripping start I will say though, it almost feels a bit rushed, and the last arc didn't have the most satisfactory ending, with Rando being beaten a little too cheaply for my taste. Solid volume overall though.

Volume 4 starts with a typical tournament style fighting brawl to determine who will be Genkai's pupil. The environments are changing and the participants dwindling until Rando plays their hand!
Part 2 starts with an infiltration of a castle (in demon world?) with some unsuspecting allies. Team Detective versus Team Wanna Bite Your Face Off. Ah, such simpler times.
I will say the use of curses and spiritual abilities are not as defined as when I watched the show, so there's a feeling that these people can pull almost anything. There's a nice touch to it. On the flip side it makes things seem chaotic. I'm sure volume 5 will leave as much to be desired as this one.

Yu Yu Hakusho, Volume 4: Training Day by Yoshihiro Togashi:
Starting 2026 off by finishing a manga volume first. This has been my thing lately, at least since mid-2025 and I will say these books definitely make my reading goal easier. However, I do not count them towards it even though Goodreads does. I found this volume to be better than the first three and I feel a little more invested in the story now, although I'm anxious to get through it and get back to reading One Piece.
I liked the tournament, that was a fun storyline. I also really enjoyed how the main characters are in The Underworld and taking down demons. It's interesting enough and I'm looking forward to reading more.

Volume 4 features Genkai's tournament to determine a successor and the fight against the demon Rando as well as the beginning of Yusuke's mission to defeat the Four Saint Beasts. I always look forward to the return of Hiei and Kurama with this storyline. I started watching the anime when they were in Maze Castle, called Labyrinth Castle in the manga, so I always enjoy going back to this storyline.

Maybe I'm being stubborn only giving it 3 stars but the description is exactly how I felt. I liked it. It was an easy read and I'm enjoying the twists the plot takes. Yusuke went through intense training (we only get 2 panels of it though...) and now is off on his next adventure of taking down Four Beasts to get a whistle and stop evil demon worms from infecting humans. It's definitely shaping up to be a decent fighting manga though.

Perkembangan cerita yg cepat (yg diakui sensei secara sarkas seperti dorama Kichida Eisuke ^o^)
Setelah turnamen tipikal yg selaluuuu muncul pada serial bergenre shounen (LOL) maka berlanjut pada arc 4 Beast.
Memang karena ini fantasi aksi petualangan, pembaca cukup berpikir ringan saja, nikmati bacaan. Meskipun begitu sepertinya lompatan alur seperti ini agak janggal dan cukup mengganggu juga.
Setidaknya kehadiran Kurama dan Hiei membuat formasi Yuyu Hakusho menjadi lengkap

Genkai is a legendary exorcist that is about to pass on her incredible talents to a chosen student, but in order to receive her training, Yusuke will have to defeat the dreaded demon Rando! Togashi is sure to please fans with this action-packed and witty entry. Yusuke will have to pull out all the stops to prove himself now!

This volume starts a typical shonen-style tournament. There is plenty of action and a bit of mystery as you try to figure out who is a demon in disguise. It's up to Yusuke and Kuwabara to figure it out. I'm giving this volume 4 stars because I'm glad we get to see more of Kuwabara in this volume. He's absolutely my favorite character in the series.
