Lin Feiran never asked to see ghosts—but thanks to a pair of yin-yang eyes he unknowingly inherited from his grandfather, he can’t stop seeing them. The ability brings him more frights than thrills, like the horrifying discovery that his dorm room isn’t home to just two people, but eighteen. And the sixteen extra “roommates”? Let’s just say they like to party… every night.
There’s only one way to get a break from the constant hauntings: physical contact with Gu Kaifeng, his annoyingly perfect roommate and the person Lin Feiran has (perhaps unfairly) labeled his archnemesis. The closer the contact, the longer the ghost-free relief lasts, much to Lin Feiran’s dismay.
Still, clinging to Gu Kaifeng is better than being scared out of his mind. And to Lin Feiran’s growing confusion, Gu Kaifeng doesn’t seem to mind the clinginess—in fact, he’s surprisingly accommodating. He lets Lin Feiran sleep in his bed, shares his desk, and… even tags along to the toilet.
Lin Feiran is desperate to find another solution—any solution—that doesn’t involve sticking to Gu Kaifeng like a human security blanket for the rest of his life. But why does Gu Kaifeng seem so pleased with the current arrangement?
This is quite cute. However, it was an impulse Rosmei purchase and I don’t think I would have read it otherwise. The cover is gorgeous and the quality is excellent with just a few errors but that didn’t bother me at all.
👻Supernatural(ghosts, ying/yang energy, etc) 👻Modern high school setting 👻Gay panic 👻Misunderstanding by the ML with a little more dub con than I felt comfortable with especially in a school danmei 👻Fluffy and funny despite it having lots of ghosts with some pretty descriptive details about their deaths
MC Lin Feiran: narcissistic, vindictive in an unserious way, cute, plays piano, short, new transfer who was used to being popular and getting all the attention, “straight”, can see ghosts ML Gu Kaifeng: popular, smart, rich, shameless (but he’s kind of being led on?)
Overall I liked it and will be reading volume 2 (final volume). If you like heartwarming, low stakes, little plot, sweet HS danmei plus supernatural, this might be a good fit for you.
A few things I didn’t really like but not enough for me to DNF 🔴Some dub-con. I was teeny bit uncomfortable with the slight bullying and pushiness of GK. There’s a reason why he was like this but not enough for me to completely ignore his behavior- especially for HS boys. Pretty sure if he acted this way towards a girl it would be labeled SA. 🔴The misunderstanding of why LF was so touchy/feely with GK. I felt bad for GK at times- isnt’ he going to be so hurt when he finds out why? Also, I wanted them together faster 😬 🔴Not much plot. I wish there was more focus on the ghosts but maybe in the next volume 🔴Sad that LF initially felt ashamed bc it was another guy he was attracted to
My rating 4.9/5 📝Spoiler Warning📝 I went completely blind when I read this book, and I'm so glad I did! Lin Feiran has this one-sided rivalry with Gu Kaifeng because Lin Feiran is obviously jealous of Gu Kaifeng's height, good looks, and, of course, his limited edition shoe collection. Lin Feiran's grandfather passes away, and he inherits his grandfather's special ability to see ghosts. Lin Feiran is absolutely terrified by ghosts! Once he knew he could see ghosts, Lin Feiran freaks out! He goes to Gu Kaifeng (I need to mention they are dorm roommates), and Lin Feiran finds that Gu Kaifeng is his saving grace. When they touch, Lin Feiran can't see ghosts! But only for 5 minutes! There is one-sided flirting and teasing from Gu Kaifeng, who thinks Lin Feiran is also flirting with him back! But of course, he wasn't. You get to see them go through this weird relationship. Everyday means everday, twice a day😏😏 I was absolutely captivated by this novel! Go pick it up if you have it! I laughed, I cried, and I got second-hand embarrassment! Enjoy reading!
The premise sounded great - contemporary (not my fav genre, BUT) and ghosts!! And a tiny bit tsundere. Sounded great - Lin Feiran suddenly starts to see ghosts because of his bad yang (or ying, i always forget) energy and Gu Kaifeng has the opposite energy. So everytime Lin touches him, he stops seeing ghosts.
So if you like oldschool BL, with really stereotype uke/seme stuff, like from the 90ties, where the uke was just a sad excuse for a girl with a dick, then yes, this book is for you. But I'm really, really over this characterization.
Lin was so, so, so badly annoying. He is what I call an "over uke". It would have even be more fitting, if it just was a hetero story with a scared girl, because he really was that bad. The worst is, that he's supposed to be one of the better students, being all competetive (especially against Gu Kaifeng, who's the top of the school), but the second he sees ghost he turns into this overly cute, scaredy-cat. Sure, if you see gruesome gory ghosts the first time, get it - I would (maybe, probably not) be scared too. But he can't even go to toilet for THREE MINUTES bcs OMFG GHOST IM SO SCARED CRYCRY, he pissed himself every fucking time. That's why hes touching Gu Kaifeng non stop - he probably would sit on his stupid lap in classroom if it would be allowed.
That means firstly, that there is like no story at all, because he doesn't see ghost many times, because of the non stop touching. Like there is litery no plot here, except him running after Gu Kaifeng, touching him, stealing stuff from him, laying in his bed, sleeping in the same bed, going to toilet with him and even following him home in the holidays. That is all. I expected some cool ghost stuff, but nope. At least not in the first 50% of the book.
On the same time, OFC there's going to be the misunderstanding with Gu Kaifeng, who thinks Lin is gay and is flirting with him - which i totally understand, bcs Lin is REALLY REALLY laying it thicc - especially because Gu Kaifeng is (not openly) gay from the start. But ofc Lin is "huh??? How can he think I'm gay, I'm super straight and i dont want Gu Kaifeng being in love with me." Sure, that's why you're sitting on his fucking lap and not thinking how this would look like to everyone else. How stupid are you ...
And the writing is also not the best - because there is not much plot, not much world building, and a lot of repetitions. If I'm going to read one more time that Gu kaifeng is amused or Lin is embarrased, i'm going to puke.
So yeah - that was so not for me. Sure, if you love the old seme/uke-thing, slice of life, not much story but more interaction between the chars and nothing more. Then this is for you.
I'll be very honest—when I picked this up, I wasn’t expecting much. Maybe a sweet, fluffy high school romance with just enough awkward glances and gentle blushing to make me smile and move on. What I didn't expect? Ghosts. Lots of ghosts. And a protagonist slowly unraveling in the most delightful (and slightly terrifying) way.
This book was one of those rare surprises that creeps up on you—in the best way. Yes, it retains the charm and warmth of a high school romance, but innocent? Oh no, friends. That ship sailed.
The real treat here is how realistic the reactions to the supernatural are. Lin Feiran doesn’t instantly become some ghost-whispering hero. No, he freaks out—rightfully so—and watching him slowly adapt (read: tolerate) the ghostly chaos around him is equal parts funny, endearing, and mildly disturbing. By the end of the book, he's not exactly the Ghost King, but he's definitely not running screaming anymore. Progress.
Now, does this book dive deep into character complexity or intricate plotting? Not particularly—and that’s part of the charm. It doesn’t pretend to be more than it is. It gets to the point, tells its story, and gives you a fast, satisfying read with just enough bite to keep you turning the pages.
I’m genuinely glad I picked it up—and even more excited to dive into Volume 2. If you’re looking for something fun, slightly spooky, and surprisingly heartfelt, give this a shot. Just maybe don’t read it alone at night.
Lin Feiran always used to be the centre of attention, until he transferred to his new school, where his roommate Gu Kaifeng is the star.
After his granfather’s death, Lin Feiran discovers his new ability to see ghosts, and the only way to stop seeing them for a short while is to touch Gu Kaifeng. Lin Feiran completely changes his attitude towards Gu Kaifeng, who’s gay and in love with his roommate.
Lin Feiran needs to come to terms with his new powers, and figure out how he truly feels about Gu Kaifeng.
This is a really funny story, and I had a great time reading it. It was my first book from Rosmei, and I have to say they really need to proofread their books more, there were some mistakes.
I prefer the approach of "even if they say no, if you don't give up and be relentless, pushy, even blackmaily, they'll eventually say yes" in my dark romances, not in a cutesy school romance, thank you very much, so I just wasn't sold on the couple at all. It's getting two stars for the ghost stuff, but I wish there was more of it. It took half the book for Lin Feiran to get over his fear of seeing ghosts and there was stuff I absolutely wasn't interested in and would cut out to get there faster. I'm just not invested enough to get the next vol, especially as there is no cliffhanger at the end of the book, and it's wrapped up well enough that it can stand on its own.
This was half a cover buy because the art is gorgeous but I also am trying to read through as much modern danmei as I can get my hands on. I am typically not drawn to reads with heavy supernatural themes, but the premise reminded me of The Ghost's Nocturne which I like a lot (yin/yang imbalance and seeing spirits) but it ended up not being much like TGN beyond those themes! It follows two hs boys, roommates in their school dorm. One of the boys (Lin Feiran) is jealous of the other (Gu Kaifeng) because he excels at everything and seems to have it all, but then becomes dependent on him when he starts seeing ghosts and is only relieved of it when he touches GKF. As a result, GKF thinks LFR is flirting with him.
I found their dynamic really cute! Lin Feiran in general was just the cutest little rice cake and I loved how Gu Kaifeng doted on him! I knew there would be a couple points of conflict because LFR couldn't just keep touching GKF indefinitely, but I was glad it was a low drama confrontation, and I liked how their relationship developed from there. The plot line around LFR's interactions with the ghosts has been really wholesome so far, and I love how it's impacting his viewpoint. I'm curious if in vol 2 he'll encounter any dangerous spirits with a lot of resentment or if the story will continue to be pretty feel good. Either way, I'm excited for volume 2 to release this winter, and hope I'll enjoy the rest of the story as much as I did this volume!
Opening complaint, which is relevant because bad translations/sloppy editing really impact the reading experience: Rosmei really, really needs to hire a better proofreader.
Although this, I think, was one of their earlier publications, and How to Survive as a Villain wasn't nearly as sloppy, so hopefully they are improving. We'll see. I did preorder the second volume because I was intrigued enough by the story. Even with the constant, distracting shifts to present tense in the middle of a sentence, or sentences that didn't even start with a capital letter. like this.
The story itself...isn't exceptional, honestly, and the romance itself is a little thin on actual chemistry and development. For a solid two-thirds of this volume, Lin Feiran is just using his roommate and rival, Gu Kaifeng, as a ghost shield, with Gu Kaifeng - who is unapologetically gay - understandably interpreting everything as Lin Feiran being wildly flirtatious with him. (Touching him literally every five minutes to reactive his yang powers, sharing his bed at night, asking to be in a neighboring shower stall, etc.)
Lin Feiran's realization that he is gay and is deeply attracted to Gu Kaifeng was kind of abrupt. It made sense to be heading there, but it almost felt...random, without any real weight behind it. They were sweet together after that, though, and Gu Kaifeng is exactly the type of doting, affectionate boyfriend he promised from his zodiac sign.
The more interesting part is what caused the shift in their relationship to begin with. A month into his time at the boarding school, with a roommate he dislikes and is deeply competitive with, Lin Feiran is whisked back home to say goodbye to his beloved grandfather. On his deathbed, his grandfather says some confusing things about ghosts and Lin Feiran's future, which he starts piecing together once he gets back to school and suddenly starts seeing ghosts. Everywhere. All the time.
Except when he touches Gu Kaifeng, who has intensely strong yang energy that briefly makes the ghosts invisible to Lin Feiran.
The biggest complication is that for whatever reason, Lin Feiran is unable to say anything about his powers or the ghosts he's seeing. He tries, multiple times, in a variety of ways, to share with Gu Kaifeng what's actually going on, but he eventually gives up and lets Gu Kaifeng assume that he's just really into him. Eventually, that becomes the truth, although he is still using his contact with Gu Kaifeng to provide relief from the terrifying experience of seeing pretty gruesome ghosts everywhere he goes.
Over time, though, he realizes that he has this power for a reason: he's able to help spirits pass on into the reincarnation cycle if he's able to work with them to identify what it is that they're holding onto and what they need closure with. Those stories were lovely: with a mother cat first, then his teacher's little ghost girl, then the school's founding principal.
These are the bits that make the story really intriguing, and I look forward to the second (final?) volume, with Lin Feiran really diving into that part of his role. There are also plenty of hints dropped about a once in a lifetime soul bond that he can form with another person in order to share his powers and take better control of them - which will clearly be something he does with Gu Kaifeng. But I don't know how he's going to get Gu Kaifeng's consent for that when it's something he won't be able to discuss with him until after the bond is formed.
Also, will Gu Kaifeng be bothered at all by the true story behind Lin Feiran's "flirtatious" behavior with him? With it wrapping up in two volumes, I doubt there's much room for real drama. There were other bits that seemed intriguing but then got dropped, like Gu Kaifeng's yang energy being really faded at one point and not lasting as long, which initially made Lin Feiran think that he was "draining" it from him like a parasite, but then it got passed off as Gu Kaifeng just having a cold. It would've been more interesting if there were some actual repercussions to using Gu Kaifeng's energy all day every day.
But we'll see how volume 2 is! It's a pretty sweet story with some decent depth to it.
Honestly, I like it! At first, I was rectulant to read the novel, but right now, I'm satisfied I bought it. It's a great book to read in between. The novel is something I craved to wind down.
I appreciate how the author presented young teenage boys. The way they behaved, thought, and acted felt real to me. Additionally, the story is fuffy and funny, which I am sucker for. Although I enjoyed the dynamic between MC and ML, I often found ML's behaviour a bit too aggressive for my taste.
The supernatural subplot was surprising but well received. It brought the refreshing breeze into the story. I don't know if I would enjoy it as much if it was a normal, high school story.
All in all, I appreciate the novel for making me smile and reminisce.
nice story, nothing super new, but it was a comfort feeling while reading. the pace was a little weird at some parts, Lin Feiran's acceptance of his feelings came very surprising and prompt after his long time of denying. but them together is very sweet and Gu Kaifeng's devotion to his man is so nice to read. the ghost stories are nicely interwoven, I felt very sorry for the little girl. GKF's friends' vibe is awesome, teasing and silently supporting. but what i did not understand was the talking about their "tail" all the time as a picture for their emotions, didnt sit right with me... otherwise I liked the writing style!
I bought the book earlier this year at Travelling Man when I went to a concert in Manchester. Making the most of the very rare opportunity of finding Rosmei titles in the wild, I pretty much bought whichever book by theirs they had, which truly wasn't a lot. In other words, I didn't really know what the book was about when I bought it, and I blame the cover for not picking it up sooner. You see, the cover says to me "cutesy, airy high-school romance," and while that is essentially what this book is, it kind of glosses over the whole. Well. "I see dead people" aspect of everything.
Because, yes, this book has ghosts. Groesome ghosts with parts missing and a tendency to bother the unsuspecting living. And our MC, Lin Feiran, has just inherited the ability to see them. Luckily for him, his roommate, Gu Kaifeng, happens to be overflowing in Yang energy, and so by touching him, he can shut the ability down for a bit. Only, now that he's clinging to his roommate all of a sudden, Gu Kaifeng misunderstands (or is he?) the touchy-feeling-ness for romantic interest, which naturally leads to a lot of shenanigans, especially with Lin Feiran being a naive, innocent, blushing maiden.
This setup was truly delightful, as were the various misunderstandings between our two leads. I am generally not one to like misunderstandings, but in this case, they only brought our leads together, not used for manufactured drama, so I found them quite amusing and endearing.
As for our characters themselves, I love Lin Feiran. What a silly goose. Or silly little rice cake, as Gu Kaifeng affectionately calls him (btw, danmei has the cutest nicknames, I swear. They're always so creative, yet give off the perfect mental image). My dude, my guy, my dear... I used to think there was a limit to how clueless one can be, but now I realize there isn't. How can you crawl into your roommate's bed and fail to see how that can be misleading? Then again, you're entirely unaware of your own sexual orientation, so I guess I shouldn't be that surprised. Still, he is an earnest scardy cat with a big heart. His plotlines with the ghosts were often moving (although I found Old Principle's story a bit lacking due to its vagueness), adding some weight and gravitas to an otherwise easy breezy read.
I don't know Gu Kaifeng as well as I do Lin Feiran, but he never failed to crack me up. My dude, you have to chill. Tell Little Gu to calm down, you can't have your partner's body on your mind 24/7 like that! You will drop in the school rankings! I am sure some people out there will find this guy a bit too pushy - but considering the info he had to go on, I thought his actions made sense (plus, it helps that we can confirm his "misunderstandings" are often actually correct in Lin Feiran's inner monologue). He is, overall, a very competent and doting boyfriend, so Lin Feiran can certainly do worse!
Speaking off, I do feel the need to warn that while this is YA in that the characters are still in high school (I believe 17), this is not a chaste book. They talk about sex and engage in sexual activities on page, which can be uncomfortable at times when taking their ages into account.
Oh, and the book has a few typos. The funniest of them all being Confuscious instead of Confucius. I feel the need to immortalize that one.
I could tell this was a modern story, but beyond that I didn't know anything about this. It's not long before our main character Lin Feiran begins to see ghosts. He's a high school student new to boarding school. His granddad died and passed on the gift. The tough thing about it is the gift won't let him talk about it at all. He can mention he sees ghosts. So, it's lonely and no one can understand him. He does talk to his granddad after he passed away and learns a little about it.
Lei Feiran has a roommate that they compete with each other. Gu Kaifeng is the all around class popular guy. He is good at sports, top student and everyone likes him. After Lin Feiran's granddad died, Gu Kaifeng sees he's not doing well and helps him out.
The thing that made me fall in love with this story is that Lin Feiran has the Yin/yang eye. He's terrified of ghosts. His school was built on a graveyard so there are tons of ghosts around, especially in his apartment. He realized that Gu Kaifeng has a lot of yang and when he just touches him, he goes five minutes without seeing any ghosts. So, he begins to find reasons just to tap GK's shoulder. It starts their friendship.
Everything that happens fromt hat situation is golden.
I did think LF is a bit to innocent. I guess it does happens. GK felt more like a regular teenage guy. Everything is playful. I did feel bad for GK that he didn't realize why LF had to touch him.
Vol. 1 had a nice wrap up and it could be an ending. There is another volume and I hope I get that book soon. I want to read it. I think these two characters are awesome. Everyone else in the story is pretty much ignored. GK has one friend we hear from and he mostly is there to tease his friend. We do meet some of the ghosts. Maybe we'll meet more people next book.
The story has great potential, but it's slow. I loved the characters and their relationship, but I wished we could've seen more from the ghosts and their passing.
The two main characters are adorable, I love Gu Kaifeng and his obsession with Lin Feiran, I hope we can see more of their relationship in the second book.
But for the pacing, it was pretty slow, a lot of times pages were filled, but the plot didn't advance. I understand this is more a Slice of life book, so the plot takes a bit to start and won't have as much importance as their daily lives and their relationship, but this made it difficult for me to read the book and I had to force myself sometimes.
I don't like rating books separately, because this rating can change a lot depending on the second part. I will for sure read the second part, because the story is interesting and I like all the characters, I hope that one isn't as slow and the plot moves forward more.
Ok. I’m going to be honest. I couldn’t even finish this one. I was initially determined to finish this volume that I actually bought but no. I could simply not endure the cringey behaviour from the love interest to-be. Continuing to make passes at someone who has repeatedly rejected you isn’t cute, it’s harassment: this has been a PSA.
Like, the premise sounds cute. And to be fair, it kind of is! The scenes where the MC starts to really tackle his fear of ghosts and interact with them I actually enjoyed. But then the ML shows up again and I go ‘oh good lord not this motherfucker again’ <— not the way a reader should feel about the love interest in a romance.
So yeah, save yourself the days of your life. This one’s going into the box for books I don't want on my shelf but feel to weird about to bring to a used bookstore or anything
I didn't think I would end up liking it so much, modern setting is not really my thing. But the supernatural elements added a lot and it's just really really cute and funny. I enjoyed it.
However, note that there is a hurt cat in a chapter around the middle somewhere! I am sensitive to that and it hit me unprepared 🥺
Books that make you wanna grab the protagonist by the shoulders and go "YOU ARE GAY!" lol. He got there eventually though! Very sweet story not how I typically see these sort of supernatural ones go, I love the MC's compassion and how he grows throughout this first book. Can't wait for the sequel <3
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
(side note: idk why people on novelupdates are saying the author's been sent to jail for 10 years? unless you think she somehow posted 5+ (m/m) novels while incarcerated for publishing erotic m/m.)
this was ridiculous but also really fun and cute and I flew through it. reading danmei really has the exact same vibe as reading fanfiction. complete with the occasional bad writing and clunky sentence structure 🤔
i think the relationship could use some work, like i wasn't totally in love with how they got together nor did i super enjoy the gong's personality?? but i did like the parts helping the ghosts :')
“It’s true your beauty caught my eye at first. But what made me stay, what made me fall so deeply, is the incredible person that you are. My Ranran, you’re brilliant, utterly charming, incredibly kind, and full of grace. You play the piano like a dream, your singing captivates, you ace your studies, your shoes never miss, you leap high, sprint fast, and your smile with those cute dimples? Completely enchanting. Your merits are too numerous to count. When you draw a guideline, I’m convinced your lines are the straightest in my eyes. Your sneeze? Music to my ears. Just one look from you turns me into a mush, and if you smile at me, I’m on cloud nine. All I crave is to hold you, kiss you, be with you, hear your voice, and make love to you. And if you stopped being as gorgeous as you are this very second, it wouldn’t matter- I’m head over heels. There’s no going back…”
I just finished Don't You Like Me? Vol. 1, and I’m still laughing! This book was such a wild ride—rom-com with ghosts? Yes, please. It’s packed with hilarious moments, but it also sneaks in some really touching scenes that caught me off guard. I definitely didn’t expect to get teary-eyed over a story like this, but it happened! The plot revolves around Lin Feiran, who is short, rich, handsome, and has a pretty solid ego—until he transfers schools and his spotlight is stolen by the super hot Gu Kaifeng. The two are basically living as strangers in their dormitory, but when Lin Feiran suddenly inherits the ability to see ghosts (yup, you read that right), everything changes. His dorm room is packed with ghosts, and poor Lin Feiran is terrified. The only thing that helps him is... touching Gu Kaifeng. Turns out Gu Kaifeng has an abundance of Yang energy that can suppress Lin Feiran's new ghost-seeing powers, so Lin has no choice but to cling to him like crazy. Cue the hilarious (and slightly spicy) moments of Lin trying to stay glued to his "archnemesis" just to avoid seeing the ghosts. I expected the ghostly parts to be creepy, and they are, but what surprised me was how real the characters felt. Despite the supernatural elements, the way Lin and Gu’s relationship develops—starting from this ridiculous setup—felt so natural and relatable. Their chemistry was both adorable and funny, with Gu slowly warming up to Lin’s constant need to be around him. Their interactions were sweet, but the constant teasing and awkward moments had me laughing out loud. And okay, I didn’t expect much spice considering their age, but there were a few scenes that definitely caught me by surprise! What I loved the most were the heartwarming parts. Despite all the craziness, it still felt like something that could happen in real life—minus the ghosts, of course. Overall, this book was such a fun, feel-good read. If you like rom-coms with a dash of the eerie and a little bit of spice, this is definitely one to pick up!
ahh!~ i felt this would have rated so much higher if i had an official translation to read. i really liked the concept and the relationship between the two was so good! it just felt like it dragged on a little too long.
Read the fan translation in the past and now gave the official one a chance. It was really good and I only caught few minor errors 👍
There isn't much of a plot, what makes this story fun is seeing the two protagonists have a silly misundertanding. Gu Kaifeng definitely was my favorite of the two, he always had me either kickin my feet or laughing, I surprisingly liked his pushiness 🤩
