Defend Me
People always claim that I'm mysterious. Aloof. Casual. That's exactly how I want it. The less people really see, the easier it is to lie to them, to convince them that I'm not a direct product of my upbringing and the world I grew up in.
I see everything that goes on around me. Learning someone's strengths and weaknesses is second nature to me. Where I'm from, everything is a game and the only acceptable outcome is to be the winner, even if you have to lie, manipulate, and give away parts of yourself.
Maybe that's why I feel empty everyday. But they'll never know because I have my shit together.
Until I didn’t.
I was ready to put off my future for a while and try to enjoy college.
Until I couldn’t.
I was committed to surface level relationships and was an expert at remaining unattached.
Until him.
He breaks through all my defenses and he doesn't even know he's doing it. He's the calm in my storm, the moonlight above the dark pit inside of me. But I can't have him. I'll break him and I can never let that happen, even if it means denying myself the one thing I've ever wanted enough to question my life, my parents, and their world.
I can't have him. That's all that matters in the end.

‘In your eyes, I recognize the sea at its most peaceful, no clouds in the sky and a full moon hanging above, shining a light that calls to me. There's this abyss inside of me and I thought it was too deep for anything to ever touch it, but you shine so brightly that the darkness just disappears. That's why I went to you that night; not to use you. When I was falling into that pit and I couldn't find a way out, I went to you because with you is the only place I've ever felt safe when I can't keep my defenses up.’
God, this book will make you feel all the emotions. 🥺

At the start this was hard to get into because I just didn’t connect with the characters. I didn’t feel the chemistry between the MCs and found myself shipping them with other characters like Dean with Brooks and Roman with Tilian. It wasn’t until Brooks finally opened up about what happened with Holly that I started rooting for them, could see their chemistry, and how good they were together.
I liked sweet Tilian’s character more than Brooks’. Tilian was an anxious, insecure guy who brought more to the table than he thought. He fought for the things that were important to him and was patient. The constant back and forth Brooks gave him would have driven me crazy.
This book just made me fall more in love with Kai and adore his relationship with Sen. These two are my favourite couple so far in the series and I’m pumped for the next book. I hope we get books for Dean and Roman as well, these characters were very intriguing.

This series has been making me smile SO MUCH! And cry but I'll come back to that.
I have eaten these books up. Im so glad for all the silliness and chaos, because it does touch some major serious issues.
Brooks and Tilian had it ROUGH. So much longing and angst. But also so much TENSION!! And the way Brooks takes control..
The overlapping of all three books was perfect. I also loved that we got to see characters from previous books continue to evolve.
I kinda just want to dive into these books and give them all hug. These boys deserve all the love!

Shock to no one, I am utterly obsessed with this new book in this series. Brooks and Tillian are definitely competing with West and Linc for the top spot!
I knew from the previous books that Brooks was going to be one of the most complex characters in the series, and I wasn't wrong. This man is a pure enigma. You literally never know what you're going to get with him. He's always ten steps ahead of everyone else, and while normally this can come across as pompous, the intricacies of his character prevent that from happening. Instead, I was left just fascinated and eagerly waiting for his chapters just to see what was going on in that brain of his. Brooks is witty, sexy, alluring and highly intelligent. He's also extremely chill and can make friends with literally anybody, making him the perfect addition to their friend group.
Tillian was everything Brooks needed and more. He's a little shy and anxious. But he also has this other side to him that comes out of nowhere, especially with Brooks. The back and forth between them was amazing and I loved the witty banter and random hangs. Like it's so obvious their feelings for each other but nobody wants to jinx it, and it's adorable. Tillian has the ability to put Brooks in his place and stand up for what he knows he deserves, and I love that he has that power over him. Their chemistry is insane and just gave me all the feels.
The story was very well written and I loved seeing all of my favorite boys from the previous books. How they all banded together for Brooks was so sweet. I want Deans book now!

This is the third book in the series, and unfortunately, it is my least favorite. The book is simply too long, and the characters are not compelling. I found Brooks to be over-the-top and more of a caricature than an authentic person, and Tillian, although slightly more dimensional, is not particularly captivating. I could not invest in their journey, both as a couple and individually, and I found it difficult to stay engaged while reading. The author writes well, but this particular content did not resonate with me.

I didn’t just read this book.I lived it. I breathed Brooks’s suffocating pressure. I ached with Tilian’s quiet longing. And somewhere between the tangled sheets of their push-pull, burn-me-alive kind of connection, I lost myself completely.
This isn’t your average MM romance. This is a story about survival, not just physically, but emotionally, spiritually. Brooks is the kind of character who shatters you in silence. He’s chaotic, jaded, destructive—but underneath all the armor is a boy screaming for peace, desperate to be seen. And then there’s Tilian—sweet, awkward, submissive Tilian, who quietly steals your soul while you’re busy falling for Brooks’s flames.
Their chemistry is magnetic. No…it’s violent. Every glance, every touch, every kiss reads like war and worship all at once. Brooks doesn’t just want to claim Tilian, he needs him. And Tilian? He’s the unexpected anchor that keeps Brooks from unraveling completely.
But what wrecked me, what fucking gutted me, was how this book made pain feel sacred. The self-harm. The trauma. The coercion. The manipulation. None of it is brushed over. Emory drags it into the light and says, Look. Feel this. Understand why it matters. And I did. I do.
This book doesn’t offer a neat, tied up happy ending. What it offers is something braver: hope. Not the fairytale kind, but the gritty, earned, blood-and-tears kind. The kind that says love isn’t always clean, but if it’s real, it’s worth the scars.
So yeah, I’m wrecked. I’m changed. And if I could tattoo a book on my soul, Defend Me would be it.

From the very first book, this series has completely captivated me, and my craving for more just keeps growing! Tillian and Brooks are amazing.
Brooks, who we've seen in the first two books, has always been that enigmatic character with a 'Knox' vibe. Everyone says it’s impossible to really know what he's truly feeling. But in this book, we finally get to see beneath the surface, witnessing what he's going through and the pressures he faces. It's so intense! Watching him with Tillian and seeing the safety they bring out in each to let their guards down around each other is just beautiful.
I absolutely loved seeing the past three couples. I love the found family trope in this series! I love it to pieces! Also very Intrigued in getting to know Dean more. I may have teared up a bit during the scenes with his dad (shout out to Noah!) and middle finger up to Ava! I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Can’t wait for Travis’ story. I have a little theory about who he might be partnered with… dare I say, a certain stepbrother might be the guy?

Tilian is a mess and I adore him. Anxious stoner boyfriend had my heart from the start. The spice also had me one hundred percent on board. Brooks and Tilian are delightfully kink-positive. I loved how they use this dynamic to work through trauma and build healthy trust. It's also very hot. Dirty talk and breath play all the way.
I struggled a bit with the climax. I'm still down to read the rest of the series since I loved the last couple of books.

Brooks and Tilian's story was full of heartache and love. Brooks puts on a mask to hide how truly broken he feels. His parents have his life planned out and it's not what he wants but he feels like he can't change anything. He meets Tilian and life gets flipped, he's drawn to him and Tilian makes him feel seen and safe. Tilian tries to break down his walls and show Brooks all the love and support. Will Brooks let him fully in?

Całkiem porządna historia Brooksa i Tilliana, choć o jakieś 100 stron za długa. Za to, oraz niektóre fabularne zgrzyty, odejmuję jedną gwiazdkę. Niby żadna tam nadzwyczajna seria, ale jakoś się wciągnęłam w tę niepoprawną found family. Chociaż chłopaki zdecydowanie nie zachowują się jak typowi 18-latkowie ;)

Another amazing story by Emory Weste. Her stories are amazingly thoughtful. They way she is able to take some very serious topics and encourages her characters to grow, develop and overcome some really hard traumas is amazing. I loved Brooks and Tilian. So far I still think Sen and Kia are my fave but Brooks and Tilian are a close second. Both Brooks and Tilian are so loveable and I’m so glad they found their HEA with each other. The spice is this was def a bit darker than the first two but it was so perfect for these two young men.
Thank you to the author and publisher for this ARC. It was pleasure to read and I can’t wait for what’s next. Travis and who??? Also will there be anything about Dean and Oliver?!

Defend Me is as beautifully written as its predecessors Unfix Me and Resist Me.
I like that the title is nuanced, Brooks is studying to become a corporate defense attorney but the title can also refer to how he needs to defend himself against his parents unfair restrictions and expectations.
Tilian is a wonderful MC who struggles with his own insecurities but comes into his own in order to get Brooks to let him in and divulge his pain.
This is a wonderful hurt/comfort story with some excellent spice. I highly recommend this entire series.

Tilian and Brooks has a long way ahead of them. There is so much angst and lust between them and what is going on around them and Brooks’s mother is a raging b!tch and I stand by that fully the abuse she’s putting her son through is extremely rough which has brought Brooks to have this kind of defence around him all these walls he has built but thankfully Tilian flew into his life even though it was Brooks that basically stalked him the meeting was really good for them
Brooks and Tilian’s relationship was really toxic and for the first time I can truly say I’m so here for you it was instant attraction from both sides and they were down bad from the first kiss to the last I’m not sure how I feel about that one scene without prep though
I really love the conversation, Tilian had with his father. It goes to say that communication really is the best relationship starter.
I love their little game of questions they get to know me part is so fantastic. It kind of reminds me of someone else. ;) anyway, I felt fascinated by when these questions would come up at random times
So far the hottest spice in the series these two really blew my mind seriously in the whole series this might have been my favourite spice
Brooks story is absolutely heartbreaking thinking that he can’t be himself even if he’s amazing and the fact that he can’t bear to people see what’s really inside him all his fears and insecurities he’s so afraid but he seems like it’s a smart person
Also, do I sense some Oliver and Dean match coming for us aaaaaand Travis coming back, yes please!!! we need his happy ending too
I read this book a 4 out of five and the reason I didn’t quite waited five like I would have loved to with that I think some moments I was a bit confused. Brooks was a lot of hot and cold and I don’t know how. Tillian get through them but it confused me as well so praises to that b!tch okay well if you love a college romance compact with angst and a lot of spice than this is definitely something I would recommend for you
but remember to form your own opinions and not just listen to me

I’ve been following this author since her debut, and she’s always been consistent for me—great style, solid characters—so I was super excited for this one. Sadly, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. This is 100% a me problem, though—the writing quality is still on par with her other books! But since I rant with love, here goes…
First, the MCs. I adored Brook in previous books, but here? He felt… off. At 18 (😭 I’m 23 and suddenly feel ancient), he read more like a moody teen throwing tantrums than the mysterious, layered guy I expected. His backstory was heavy (props for tackling male victimhood in sexual abuse—that part was handled well), but his actions? Contradictory and hard to connect with. I felt for him, but I didn’t like him.
Then there’s Tilian. So much potential… until the vaping. I lost count of how many times "vap" appeared. If it were framed as a flaw, fine—but it felt normalized, even when he admits he’s not using it just for his anxiety. Everyone ignored it was a problem, and other characters indulged with him on occasion. As someone who’s hardcore anti-drug (even legal ones!), this really threw me. Maybe it’s a cultural gap (US college life vs. my bubble where I’ve never even seen a vape), but it bugged me.
Then there’s the whole kissing-the-ex-to-spark-jealousy moment. Look, I get the trope—but this one felt… staged. Considering Brook’s loud-and-clear stance on cheating, it was jarring to see him play along with the very person he claimed to hate. Plus, since this scene was introduced in a previous book (back when Tilian wasn’t even in the picture), it came off more like an awkward callback than an organic conflict. It didn’t add tension—it just made me side-eye the logic. (There were other ways to resolve this than using that character.)
And okay, this isn’t the author’s fault, but after reading danmei, I’m spoiled by subtlety. Here, the trauma is explained outright—no room to wonder or ache for the characters. (Give me 400 chapters of suffering and ambiguity any day! 😂)
Silver lining? The side characters and found family vibes—chef’s kiss ❤️. They’re the reason I finished!
So yeah… not my favorite, but if you’re cool with vaping-as-a-personality-trait and love messy, young MCs? Might work for you!

Parents and home is supposed to be a safe place right? But sometimes those are what give us the most pain and trauma of our lives. Having money and power doesn’t mean we will be happy too. It is possible to be happy and content even if we aren’t the richest or most powerful.
Loving yourself needs to be prioritised at any time. Because if you can’t love yourself no one can, not even the ones who are supposed to love us unconditionally. Generally, most happy faces are the ones that hide the most pain in their eyes and it takes a very precise effort to see the hidden pain in happy faces.
This is the story of Brooks who is a law student coming from a very powerful advocate family who has everything a person needs to live luxuriously. He is the one person who is happy every time you see or talk to them, who could make the most self depreciating person love themselves. But he is one of the people who hide all his pain behind their happy smiles and in need for someone to love and understand him. He loves his parents who have taught him since childhood that one needs to do anything possible to get to the top of the world no matter its legal or not.
Tillian is an introvert but confident person, he can find the good in any person and bring out their best at any condition. He falls for Brooks since their first meeting but he knows that Brooks is kind of person who needs help to come out and express his emotions freely. He tries his best to make Brooks comfortable enough to express what he truly feels.
They both have feelings for each other but both need time and space to actively show their true selves to each other. The path to be together for them is quite difficult because Brooks has many hindrances to reach the place where he prioritises himself over his parents and Tillian is scared to lose him if he declared his love to Brooks.

Here we meet Brooks, a law student from a prominent advocate family that enjoys a life of luxury thanks to their immense wealth. He has the power to lift the spirits of even the most self-deprecating individuals and make them love themselves just by being around them. But he's one of those folks who needs someone to love and understand him despite the fact that he's hiding his anguish beneath a cheerful grin. He is very close to his parents, who instilled in him the belief that one must do everything it takes to reach the top, regardless of the consequences, and he loves them for it. Though shy and self-assured, Tillian has an uncanny knack for seeing the best in people and bringing out their greatest qualities, no matter how challenging the situation. Despite his knowledge that Brooks is the type of guy who need assistance in expressing himself freely, he finds himself falling for Brooks the moment they meet. He does his best to put Brooks at ease so that he may tell him how he really feels. They care for each other, but they need space and time to be themselves around one other before they can really express it. Their journey to be together is fraught with difficulty; Tillian fears losing Brooks if he confesses his love to him, and Brooks faces numerous obstacles on his way to prioritising himself above his parents. Because of this book, I've been considering how parental views might drive their children to withdraw emotionally and intellectually, and how parents' assumptions that they know best for their children aren't necessarily accurate. I went into Defend Me (book 3 in the series) without reading the first two, but the promise of angst lured me in—and I’m glad I gave it a shot.
The banter and dark humor really worked for me, and I instantly connected with Tilian. His anxiety and antisocial personality felt so familiar, and I loved how steady and supportive he was toward Brooks from the start. It hurt to see him dealing with Brooks’s mixed signals—one minute Brooks is pushing him away, the next he’s doing something sweet and intimate. It was frustrating but also very human.
Brooks’s character development was a highlight. Watching him work through the damage of being manipulated—especially by his own mother, who pushed this toxic need for perfection—was heartbreaking and real. I absolutely loved the support systems in the book too: Brooks’s dad and Tilian’s family were wonderful, and the side characters were all solid additions. But Brooks’s mom? Yeah… I hated her. She and her toxicity really hit a nerve.
The romance is more of a medium burn—it’s not a super slow simmer, but it’s not instant either. A lot of the tension comes from Brooks’s internal struggle and emotional baggage, and that made the payoff feel earned.
That said, I did find the book a bit too wordy at times. The pacing dragged for me, and it took longer to finish than usual. I typically fly through books I love in a day, and this one took me more than that. Still, I enjoyed the story, and I’d recommend it—especially to readers who enjoy emotional journeys, complex characters, and a romance with some bite.

Check your TWs, because there is a lot packed into this story.
Going into this book, I expected Tillian would have my heart, but it was Brooks who grabbed it with both hands and wouldn't let go. I've read every book in this series so far and would be hard pressed to pick a favorite. The MCs of this entire series will always stay with me, but I think Brooks will be especially present in my mind for a long time.
At the beginning of the story, we see Brooks as a good time guy, grateful for his privilege, and kind to everyone, if mischievous. But that is only scratching the surface. He is so much deeper and his full character is revealed gradually. His initial pursuit of Tillian is to sate his curiosity. Even Brooks isn't prepared for the depth of feeling that develops between them and has Brooks questioning the carefully crafted life his parents have laid out for him.
Tillian has his own struggles and issues, but he is a rock for Brooks. He put up with a lot and proved to be unshakeable. Tillian's strength allowed Brooks to discover his own.
One thing Emory does well, is write awful parents. Each book in this series shows how parents with misguided intentions and beliefs can utterly destroy their children. It's hard to read from a parent's perspective because boy did it make me ragey. Then I had to go hug each of my kids and assure them they can be whoever they want to be. This story was an emotional ride, but the payoff at the end is worth it. Also loved all the cameos by the guys from the previous books. I'm looking forward to the next one.
Going into this book, I expected Tillian would have my heart, but it was Brooks who grabbed it with both hands and wouldn't let go. I've read every book in this series so far and would be hard pressed to pick a favorite. The MCs of this entire series will always stay with me, but I think Brooks will be especially present in my mind for a long time.
At the beginning of the story, we see Brooks as a good time guy, grateful for his privilege, and kind to everyone, if mischievous. But that is only scratching the surface. He is so much deeper and his full character is revealed gradually. His initial pursuit of Tillian is to sate his curiosity. Even Brooks isn't prepared for the depth of feeling that develops between them and has Brooks questioning the carefully crafted life his parents have laid out for him.
Tillian has his own struggles and issues, but he is a rock for Brooks. He put up with a lot and proved to be unshakeable. Tillian's strength allowed Brooks to discover his own.
One thing Emory does well, is write awful parents. Each book in this series shows how parents with misguided intentions and beliefs can utterly destroy their children. It's hard to read from a parent's perspective because boy did it make me ragey. Then I had to go hug each of my kids and assure them they can be whoever they want to be. This story was an emotional ride, but the payoff at the end is worth it. Also loved all the cameos by the guys from the previous books. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Though not really considered a series, Brooks from Defend Me was good friends with Kai and West from the previous two books, Únfix Me and Resist Me and, although they’re all interconnected, they can still function as standalones.
Brooks broke my heart! Constantly feeling the need to be aware of how his behavior might be perceived as a reflection on his parents and their expectations of him was sad. He tried so hard to rationalize their behavior but there really was no excuse, especially for his mother; she was a piece of work! And Tilian! I loved him too, he was so insecure and self conscious but still defiantly resisting expectations… he had struggles of his own that he used drugs for to help silence and quiet his mind.
This was such an amazing book! I wanted so bad to hug both MCs (and hurt Brooks’s mom!!); they had gone through so much for them to be so young but I loved them together, they were perfect for each other. It’s been quite a while since I’ve read the previous two books so I could be wrong but I don’t remember either of them being as angsty as this one. Of course, like I said it’s been a while, maybe I’m mis-remembering🤷♀️but, either way, I recommend all three books. Each one can be read as a standalone since each one is about a different couple but because they kind of build upon the previous one, it’s better to read them in order to get the big picture of how their friendships are related. I loved Brooks story, seeing the journey he went on and his strength and confidence in himself! I felt very empathetic towards him so this book was a roller coaster of emotions and tears and anger at certain individuals (spoilers!). Tilian was such a great character and the opposite of Brooks and I loved how sweet Brooks was with him. People become stronger in different ways and a part of that is through the people they hang around and who influence them. I also that process is as much to do with the people who enter our lives as it is with ourselves. It is our choices, the decisions we make, and the actions we take that can build our strength and resilience but it is also the people we interact with. They show us new ways of being, of doing and of acting with ourselves and with others and while it is a choice/decision/action, they are as much a participant in that process as we are. It's a journey of identity people go on when they find new ways of being themselves with someone that make sense and fits in our lives. I have gotten that sense from all the pairings in this series but most especially with Brooks and Tillian. This book was beautiful and I can't wait to read Travis's in the next! I wonder who it'll be!

Self sacrifice in the name of "perfection"
Brooks has always followed his parents plans for him. He is meant to become the perfect lawyer and hoping their company. He however is expected to do this by whatever means necessary. Even if those things chip away at his soul and he loses who he is.
Tilian is an anxiety ridden loner who is immediately drawn to Brooks. They start our as friends with Brooks trying to find Tilian a boyfriend even though he really wants that position. Unfortunately it's just one of the things that wouldn't fit into his parents image.
However, when Brooks is forced into something that threatens his mental stability Tilian is the only person that can get through to him. Tilian gently coaxes Brooks to do things that he wants to do and to try and find himself under all the parental expectations.
Tilian and Brooks are really good for each other but there are a lot of obstacles in their path. With the help of their friends (the guys we met in the first 2 books) they work to get Brooks to find who he wants to be not the expectation.
I really love the friendships in this series and how they get stronger as they couple up. They are all fighting their own demons but together they are stronger and they are not alone.

I went into Defend Me already familiar with Emory Weste’s incredible talent for writing raw, emotionally resonant stories — and she absolutely delivered again. At first, the dynamic between Tilian and Brooks felt almost surface-level, but as the layers peeled back, especially around Brooks, everything clicked into place with stunning clarity.
What makes Emory’s writing so unforgettable is her ability to craft deeply messy, morally gray characters and explore their inner turmoil without ever glamorizing or simplifying their struggles. Brooks and Tilian aren’t perfect — far from it — but they’re real, complicated, and trying so hard to be better. Watching them navigate their trauma, stumble through their fears of commitment, and still reach for connection was beautifully heartbreaking and hopeful all at once.
The BDSM elements were perfectly woven into the story, never for shock or spice alone, but as a natural and meaningful part of the characters’ emotional arcs. This is a book that understands people and pain, and the hard work it takes to love when your own mind fights against it.

This was emotional, and very beautifully written. I felt their pain acutely and I was really rooting for them. Their journey to love wasn't an easy one and their demons almost ruined it for both them, but it was great to see them choosinfg each other. Brooks went through some horrible things and while he lived a charmed life by all appearances, what went on behind closed doors and in his head was very different to that charmed life. I loved how Tilian had him opening up and wanting to be honest and not hide himself. I also loved how safe Tilian made Brooks feel.
Brooks was hot and cold towards Tilian for a part of this book, but it was all because he was trying to protect Tilian from the darkness in his life and in himself, even if Tilian never saw him as a bad person. I loved Tilian for constantly being there for Brooks and for pushing him to open up and share the dark parts, and for also meeting Brooks where he was at.
This was an angsty read, but I promise you it is totally worth it. It was great to see Brooks finally being himself and living his life the way he wanted, while also unapologetically choosing Tilian in front of everyone.

THIS BOOK. 5 stars!
Okay this is easily my favorite of the series! I’ve been foaming at the mouth for more about the mysterious Brooks and the even more mysterious man he was pining after in Resist Me. These characters are so relatable-the perfectionism, anxiety, anti-social behaviors, and the need to please everybody, are all problems a lot of people struggle with.
Brooks and Tilian, like everybody else in their friend group, are hard not to love! You just wanna give Brooks a hug. I love the presence of all of our other MCs up to this point, they make the story so much fun and bring more depth to it.
At times reading this I was getting antsy and anxious for what’s coming. I just had to know what was next. I definitely wanted to smack Brooks a few times for his icy-hot interactions with Tilian. Super wanted to smack Brooks’ mom for her horrible attitude.
That epilogue has me so excited for the next book in the series. I can’t wait it for more of this series and I’m going to be so sad when it’s over. Major book slump coming.

Oh...my...gosh...like you don't even know! The review for this one is going to leave me a gushing, babbling mess. I have had the pleasure of reading every Emory Weste book as they first step foot in the world. I am not a first-person reader typically. Let me stress that! So, for me to not only read, BUT DEVOUR a first-person book that is a testament to the story & writing itself. Characters so wonderfully crafted that they are brought to life, stories so carefully woven that you are pulled into and compelled. I cannot give a more glowing recommendation. Just when I think I found a favorite of the books? Weste gives us another book. Brooks' story and Tillian's character have easily made this a favorite of mine. Which surprised me, because Brooks was the one character I struggled with in previous two books. I could never pin him down or feel him out. He eluded my mind's eye. "Defend Me" was exactly what I needed to make that connection with him. It was a magical experience to have him finally click for me.
