She wakes to find herself alone in complete darkness. Fearing for her life, in that moment her only thought is for her beloved daughters. What will they think when they find out she’s missing? Then it hits her. She’s kept a secret hidden from her family for years. Is she about to pay for it with her life?
When Victoria Marsh disappears from her family’s exclusive resort in Cougar Point, Washington, her family is devastated. A charity worker and pillar of the local community, how could she just vanish without a trace?
Though not officially her case, Detective Megan Carpenter races to the scene for a very personal reason. Victoria is Ronnie’s mother and Megan will do anything to help her when she has sacrificed so much.
Together they build up a picture of the days before the disappearance but the only clue is a note with the words, “You promised” scrawled on it. It soon emerges that Victoria’s marriage was far from perfect and she had spent years running from a deadbeat brother. Could someone in Victoria’s family want her dead?
But when the body of another woman is found, Megan starts to link the cases. Both women had huge ransoms placed on them. Both families received chilling threats in the mail. And with one victim already dead, time is running out to find Victoria alive.
Local law enforcement warns Megan off the case but she’s certain that the disappearance is more than just bad blood. But with a potential serial killer on the loose, how much is Megan willing to risk? Worse still, could they be closer to her than she had ever imagined?

First and foremost, I would like to thank @greggolsen for another amazing story. Also I would like to thank @bookouture and @netgalley for giving me this opportunity to read the 5th book of the Megan Carpenter series, Cougar Point. I have loved this series, and this new one did not disappoint!
I adore Megan’s character. She is witty, sarcastic, funny, and also a great detective. I enjoy how Megan plays so well against her partner, Detective Ronnie Marsh, who is happy and positive and better with the tech aspect of their work. We also learn a little more about Ronnie, and her wealthy family.
When Megan finds out that Victoria Marsh, the mother of her partner Ronnie Marsh, goes missing without a trace, Megan will do anything to help Ronnie find her mother. They only have one lead to go on, a scribbled note that says “You promised”. Together they are determined to find out who left this note. When a body of another women is found Megan and Ronnie need to find out if the disappearances and now murder are linked together. We have dual POV’s from Megan and Ronnie. Ronnie tells us that there have been similar crimes in the past in Cougar Point.
This was a thrilling and suspenseful hold your breath until the end, kind of reads. I really got lost in the pages, and felt that I couldn’t put this down. I can’t wait to see more of these two courage women.
It has been a few years since Gregg Olsen released a Detective Megan Carpenter book, and now we have Book #5 in the series. As we’ve seen in the series, Megan has started her life over and is a very good detective. In her latest case, she is in Cougar Point as her partner Ronnie’s mother Victoria is missing.
As readers see Megan’s viewpoint as the case intensifies, there is also that of Victoria. Meanwhile, as we see Ronnie worried, so is her sister Rebecca. Then, another character, Lucas, a detective who lives and works in Cougar Point, is doing his best to keep Megan and Ronnie away from the case.
Lucas’ POV is rather interesting because the story also flashes back to February 2023 and it is interesting to see how this drives Lucas when looking for Victoria. Megan doesn’t like Lucas at all, and she is also worried about threats against her past.
A very busy story to be sure, with a lot of dynamics. And it most definitely packs a punch. What a way to bring readers back to the series!
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
The premise of this book is interesting, but there are so many blantant continuity errors that I wanted to scream. Things that were mere pages apart, like the color of a victim's eyes. Green one page, blue the next. Yes to champagne with mother, no champagne together. How many glasses were brought in? The question answered in bottles. Really frustrating. Details got in the way of things sometimes, and made little sense others. Decent book though.
Hello Goodreads Family, I gave the book 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Honestly, I thought it was kind of boring for it being the last book for Detective Megan Carpenter series although I believe there will be another book to this series. Detective Megan is a bad ass detective and I don’t feel that this book gave her Justice. But I’m glad I read the series.
When Victoria Marsh goes missing from her family’s plush resort, Detective Megan Carpenter wastes no time traveling to Whatcom County to find her. Even though it’s out of her jurisdiction, she isn’t going to take no for an answer when it comes to joining the investigation, no matter how hard local detective Mike Lucas tries to keep her out of it. After all, Victoria Marsh isn’t just another missing person. She’s Megan’s partner Ronnie’s mother.
With a slew of sketchy characters and a family with enough secrets to rival Megan’s own, she and Ronnie have a list of suspects and lies to untangle before they can find Ronnie’s mother. Stumbling on another case that’s eerily similar to their own across the country in Cincinnati, they have to wonder if they have a serial killer on their hands… or if it’s more personal? After discovering Victoria wanted a divorce before she disappeared, as well as the existence of an ex-con brother who Ronnie and her sister knew nothing about, there are enough twists and turns in the case to keep the detectives dizzy. But time’s running out. When Victoria’s severed finger arrives in the mail, followed by her hand, they know her life has an expiration date in the near future if they don’t find her.
A propulsive, edge-of-your-seat, ultra gripping mystery, “Cougar Point” by Gregg Olsen grabs you from all directions and doesn’t let go. Fast-paced and vividly descriptive, the story is told from three different perspectives: Megan’s in the present day, Detective Lucas in 2023 around the time of the Cincinnati case, and Victoria’s as she endures abuse and torture from her unknown abductors. At once, it’s a high stakes police investigation and creepy thriller that’ll make you put your hand over your mouth and gasp through the twists and turns.
“Cougar Point” has all the elements needed to make it can’t-put-it-down reading, including a cast of colorful characters who are so suspicious their own mothers would doubt them. There’s Victoria’s husband Jack who seems uninterested and unaffected by it all, her brother Vinnie whose addictions keep him in need of money (and lots of it), and Vinnie’s ex-con buddies who have a long list of crimes, but not one redeeming quality between them. That’s not to mention the employees at the resort, as well as Detective Lucas. He might not be a bad guy, but he’s determined to hinder Megan’s investigation every chance he gets. Megan and Ronnie have their work cut out for them, that’s for sure. It’s a good thing they’re brilliant detectives — and completely likable characters.
“Cougar Point” is the fifth book in the Detective Megan Carpenter series. Not having read the first four books, I worried I wouldn’t be able to sink into this one. I was wrong. There were definitely details I was missing that were found in the other books, but they had to do with Megan and her past, not with the current investigation. Those details didn’t hamper my enjoyment of “Cougar Point” — not in the least. I got hooked on the prologue, and I stayed that way until the end. That’s not shocking, though. The author’s Gregg Olsen. Trust me when I say that it doesn’t matter if he’s writing true crime, police procedurals, or thrillers. All of his books that I’ve read are mind-blowingly good. He’s a highly talented writer and a brilliant storyteller. He deserves five stars as much as “Cougar Point”.
Thank you to Gregg Olsen and Bookouture for the eARC in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
Cougar Point, the fifth book in the Megan Carpenter series, is another compelling and fast-paced read. This installment takes us to Ronnie’s home turf—Cougar Point itself—where the stakes quickly become personal. Ronnie’s mother, Victoria Marsh, is kidnapped and held for ransom, setting off a tense race against the clock.
Megan and Ronnie are forced to team up with Detective Lucas, an oddball investigator with unconventional—and sometimes questionable—methods. His presence adds an interesting dynamic to the investigation, especially as the pressure mounts and time runs out. As the case unfolds, we also learn much more about Ronnie’s family and the complicated dynamics that shape her character.
The plot is dark and twisted, with crimes that are unsettling and emotionally charged. I found myself desperately hoping for Victoria’s safe return, which made the story even more gripping. As always, the characters are solid, the pacing is strong, and the tension builds steadily.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, just as I have every installment in the series so far. Cougar Point is a strong addition to an already excellent series and one I highly recommend.
Thank you NetGalley, Gregg Olsen & Bookouture for an advanced reading copy.
First, I want to thank Gregg Olsen, Bookouture, and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.
YES!!! One of my fave authors, Gregg Olsen is back to continue where he left off in the Megan Carpenter Series. Oh how I have missed this series and his writing. Cougar Point is the fifth book in this addictive story.
Every one of Gregg’s covers for this book has been so creatively done. It captures your eye and l makes you want to know what it is all about.
As I stated earlier this is the fifth book in the season and should be read as part of the series. However, he does give a little reminder for those who might have forgotten something.
Gregg wastes no time jumping into the intense story and grasps our attention. Once you start reading it, you won't want to put this down once you start. Seriously, he really did incorporate many interesting storylines around the base character Megan. There were a few that I really liked as well.
It has been a while since I had met Megan Carpenter and it was a pleasure to reconnect with her and the other recurring characters.
Just because it had been a while, I was happy the author added a few hints to make it easier for me to rearrange everything in my brain in order to pick up Megan's life without any trouble.
I also remembered why I love Megan so much and not just because of her good detective work. I enjoy to see how what she thinks is often the complete opposite of what she says and it's hilarious.
I also like it a lot when two detectives are able to see eye to eye and they can communicate without words and they can keep the banter going.
What I loved in this book is that two seemingly different events come together to build an amazing story. 5 stars
Detective Megan is at it again sticking her nose into an investigation and annoying local law enforcement but that’s why we love her. This time it’s personal as her partners mother is missing and together they are determined to bring her home alive as the local police seem to not be doing anything. As Megan finally sees what family can mean she starts to question her own upbringing and is still worried that the truth about who she really is could be spilled and she will loose everything. This book is dark and brutal but a great read. Don’t miss it! Roll on book 6 (soon please)
Thank you Net Gallery for allowing me a first read of Cougar Point, the latest Meg Carpenter book from Gregg Olsen. Meg’s partner Ronnie’s mother is missing and she asks Meg to come help her investigate and find her. There were a lot of plot threads in the beginning but keep reading and they all make sense. The beginning was a little clunky but once I got into the book it all made sense. I enjoyed the twists and turns of the story and I look forward to reading more Gregg Olsen novels.
While I have enjoyed many of Olsen's novels, this was not his best. In fact, the past couple were not. The storyline was interesting enough and could have worked. Unfortunately, there was a lot of disjointed information that didn't seem to flow. Either I was extremely tired whenever I was reading or there were plot errors or just very confusing writing. I even went back to read about "the champagne that made them tipsy" and then later "where did the champagne come from" and I'm still confused - what was the deal with the champagne? That happened more than once. A fact in one chapter seemed to morph to a different fact later. I assumed I missed the transition somehow. But, I have no idea. It's definitely too bad because it had a lot of potential.
Cougar Point, the fifth in the terrific Megan Carpenter series by Greg Olsen, finds Megan and her partner, Ronnie Marsh, working on a case personal to Ronnie. Victoria Marsh, Ronnie’s mother, has disappeared from a resort owned by Ronnie’s father in a neighbouring county, and the local detective in charge of the case, Sergeant Michael Lucas, doesn’t seem to be doing much to find her. Sheriff Gray – Megan and Ronnie’s boss – calls in a favour and gets the duo involved in the investigation, which Lucas obviously resents. With Lucas unwilling to share information, it takes all of the pair’s doggedness to make any progress, while the kidnappers come up with a huge ransom demand and vow to kill the hostage if the investigators do not back off. When various leads fizzle out, a passing reference to a case Lucas worked on a couple of years ago catches the fancy of Megan and Ronnie. Meanwhile, the kidnappers begin to escalate, and the probability of seeing Victoria alive starts falling by the minute. Amidst the all-consuming investigation, Wallace – Megan's stalker with the knowledge of her shady past – gets in touch, promising to catch up with her soon.
It is a pleasure to return to the exploits of the abrasive, unorthodox Megan Carpenter. The vivacious Ronnie, however, is somewhat more intense in this outing, understandably. Olsen has developed his lead characters terrifically, with Ronnie growing tougher and Megan getting more human as the series progresses. The plot moves fast as always, and Olsen’s descriptions are vivid. I was expecting Megan’s face-off with her personal demon to happen in this episode, but it is all about Victoria’s disappearance this time. However, Olsen provides a glimpse of Megan’s nemesis, suggesting that the coming volume may feature the much-anticipated showdown. Recurring characters from the previous books, like Sheriff Gray and his secretary, Nan, get less space in Cougar Point, and a few others are absent entirely, which made me miss them a bit. Though adequately intense, the investigation, and especially Megan and Ronnie's roles in it, feels somewhat tamer compared to the previous novels. Barring these, and a few other minor things, Cougar Point is another gripping addition to this excellent series, and I enjoyed it a lot!
Thank you, Bookouture, for the digital review copy of Cougar Point through NetGalley, in exchange for my unbiased review.
"If I've learned anything by being here, where secrets are abundant, it's that secrets are deadly. Secrets can kill."
Dark, tense and twisty, Cougar Point is another gripping instalment in the Detective Megan Carpenter series. The stakes are higher than ever as Megan and her partner, Ronnie, investigate a very personal crime. Ronnie’is mother, Victoria, has disappeared from the family’s exclusive resort in Cougar Point, Washington, and they are unofficially on the case. But who could have taken her? As the pieces of the puzzle emerge, family secrets are revealed and it seems to lead to more questions than answers. And could there be a link to an old murder that happened in the area? The race is on to find out before it's too late…
Gregg Olsen never disappoints and the fifth instalment in this series is every bit as fast-paced, grisly, and nail-bitingly tense as the previous books. Olsen holds his reader captive as he tells his story, moving seamlessly between current events, flashbacks to another crime, and narration from the victim. At first it wasn’t obvious how the flashbacks would merge with current events, but he slowly sprinkles breadcrumbs that lead you to the surprising answers. And while I enjoyed all three threads, it was the narration by Victoria as she’s being held by the kidnappers that captivated me most, her fear palpable and making my heart race.
The characters are compelling and I enjoyed learning more about Ronnie’s family and background in this instalment. I love her and Megan as a team as they really compliment one another and I enjoyed seeing how they worked outside of their usual community and while juggling tricky family dynamics. And, speaking of families, a key theme of the book is dysfunctional families, which are explored not only in Megan’s murky past but also Ronnie’s estranged family. Olsen also explores how secrets can damage lives and relationships as the truths about the Marsh family are revealed. It heightened the tension in the story and kept me on my toes as I wondered what would be revealed next.
Suspenseful, addictive and hard-hitting, Cougar Point is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a darker thriller.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
In “Cougar Point,” Gregg Olsen delivers another gripping installment in the Detective Megan Carpenter series, blending suspense, emotion, and intricate plotting into a compelling narrative that keeps readers captivated.
The story bedins with the mysterious disappearance of Victoria Marsh from her family’s exclusive resort in Cougar Point, Washington. Victoria, a respected charity worker, vanishes without a trace, leaving behind a cryptic note that reads, “You promised.” Detective Megan Carpenter, though not officially assigned to the case, is drawn in due to her personal connection with Victoria’s daughter, Ronnie.
Olsen excels in character development, particularly with Megan Carpenter. Megan’s determination and personal stakes in the case add layers to her character, making her relatable yet formidable. The supporting characters, from the distressed Marsh family to the enigmatic suspects, are well-crafted, each adding depth to the narrative.
Olsen’s writing is taut and engaging, with a perfect balance of descriptive prose and dialogue. The pacing is brisk, ensuring that the reader is constantly engaged. The twists and turns are expertly placed, making the plot unpredictable and thrilling.
“Cougar Point” explores themes of family loyalty, the consequences of past actions, and the relentless pursuit of justice. Olsen weaves these themes seamlessly into the narrative, enriching the story and giving it emotional weight.
“Cougar Point” is a standout addition to the Detective Megan Carpenter series. Gregg Olsen’s ability to craft a suspenseful, emotionally charged thriller is on full display.
Fans of the series and newcomers alike will find themselves captivated by this latest adventure. It’s a must-read for anyone who enjoys a well-crafted mystery with strong character development and an intricate plot.
Cougar Point is the 5th book in the Detective Megan Carpenter crime thriller series. I haven't read any of the previous books in the series and had no problem enjoying this story. I will be reading the previous books now, as I want to get all of Megan's background. In this book, Megan gets a call from her partner, Ronnie Marsh. Her mother is missing and they are worried she has been kidnapped. Although it is out of their district, Megan and Ronnie head to Cougar Point to help with the investigation. The have to work with local Detective Lucas, who seems to be hiding things and keeping secrets. Is he working with them or against them. It seems to tie to another case of a murdered woman found in the area, and they are worried that Victoria will be killed whether they pay the ransom or not. Will they be able to find Victoria before she ends up dead?
This book grabbed me right from the prologue when Victoria wakes up and realizes she is being held captive. Her family were frantic to find her, at least her daughters were. I wasn't sure about her husband, Jack. Was he behind the kidnapping, or just trying to follow the demands of the kidnappers. I really liked Megan and Ronnie. They were smart, and worked well together. It didn't take them long to determine who the suspects were and follow their trail. Of course Lucas also has his suspicions and he had his own agenda. With family secrets and estrangements, this story kept me guessing for most of the book. I really enjoyed this one and will definitely be reading the previous books. Megan has a lot of stuff in her background that is eluded to in this book and I really want to learn her story. I definitely recommend this one to those who enjoy crime thrillers, and detective mysteries.
The fifth instalment in the Detective Megan Carpenter series, Gregg Olsen‘s COUGAR POINT may have you questioning how well you really know your own relatives
When Victoria Marsh goes missing, her family scrambles to find her in Cougar Point, Washington. Did she just leave? Was she taken? And what of the note left behind? When Victoria‘s daughter, Ronnie, requests a leave of absence from the police force to return home to search for her mother, Megan feels compelled to go with her. As they searched through the clues, the twist and turns abound and the pieces of the puzzle slowly begin to take shape. The local police however warn Ronnie and Victoria off the case claiming interference. Victoria’s husband Jack and oldest daughter Rebecca are surprised to learn that Victoria has been helping her brother, Vinnie all these years. The family believed that he was no longer in the picture. But Victoria had many secrets she was keeping from the family.
Meanwhile Olivia Greenwood goes missing from a luxury resort. After being reported missing, her husband again contacts the police to say that she has been found and that she is well. But why was her body just found in a morgue? what exactly is happening with the Greenwood family?
As always, Gregg Olsen knocks it out of the park. I could feel the tension rising with my blood pressure and the wind hitting my face as I ran through Cougar Point. The writing is clear and concise, as always and lead to an enjoyable read. There were, however many characters involved so bring a dance card.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC opportunity. All opinions are my own and given voluntarily.
So far, the Detective Megan Carpenter series has been exciting and entertaining. The fifth book does not disappoint. The story begins at a posh resort called Semiahmoo Resort in the furthest northwest corner of Washington State, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, where Megan's partner, Ronnie Marsh's mother, Victoria, is kidnapped. Ronnie is from a wealthy family, but they've grown distant since she moved away to become a police officer in Port Townsend. Still, when she gets a call from her sister, Rebecca, saying her mother is missing, she and her partner, Megan, come running back to Cougar Point. They quickly encounter problems. Sergeant Michael Lucas, the local investigator handling the case, clearly doesn't want their help. Then Ronnie's father, Jack, is hostile and secretive—even several of the employees at the resort supply questionable information regarding the night in question. Megan and Ronnie get the runaround from the locals, witnesses, and the family as they try to find the kidnappers. Meanwhile, the victim is being tortured and threatened. There's plenty of action as everyone turns out to be a suspect and then turns on each other. There are also plenty of plot twists and surprises. I especially enjoy Megan's snarky commentary. It's another entertaining addition to the series.
First of all, I want to thank Bookouture and Net Galley for giving me the opportunity to read the ARC of the 5th book of the Megan Carpenter series, Cougar Point. I have loved this series thus far and this new one did not disappoint! I adore Megan’s character. She is witty, sarcastic, funny, and also a fantastic detective. Megan plays so well against her partner, Detective Ronnie Marsh, who is happy and positive and better with the tech aspect of their work. And per Megan, Ronnie is extremely pretty and attractive to the opposite sex and sometimes “uses” this (she admits it) to get ahead on some of the cases.
In this installment, the reader learns more about Det Ronnie and her wealthy, but annoying family, when Ronnie’s mother goes missing and is thought to be kidnapped. Most of the current plot is told by Det Megan, but the book does switch between other character’s POV and includes the telling of a similar crime in the past. Cougar Point is thrilling and suspenseful, perfect for binge reading to the end!
And once again, I am so excited to have been given the opportunity to read this newest book early and give a thoughtful review! #Bookouture # NetGalley #CougarPoint #MeganCarpenterSeries
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest in the Detective Megan Carpenter series by a favorite, Gregg Olsen. All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!
Victoria Marsh disappears from her family's exclusive resort in Cougar Point, Washington, just when she was on the verge of telling her daughter some news. Although not officially in their jurisdiction, detectives Megan and Ronnie race to the scene, because this one is personal - Victoria is Ronnie's mother. Could someone in the family be involved? Does it relate to another case in Ohio? Time is ticking to find the answers and local law enforcement aren't completely on board with their involvement.
I really like this police procedural series. Olsen is a master at true crime stories, so the dialogue and storyline feel ripped out of the headlines. Plus, the characters are great - Megan never fails to make me smile, as we gain access to not only what she says, but what she's thinking as well. The working and personal relationship between Megan and Ronnie continues to develop and get stronger. This storyline involved questionable family, multiple crimes, and law enforcement hurdles to make another great book!
Cougar Point is part of the Detective Megan Carpenter series where each book contains a complete case but the story does continue along with a background arc. This book could potentially be read as a standalone but there is a lot of Megan’s story that carries over from book to book. Megan’s only true friend and her current detective partner, Ronnie is called home when her mother goes missing. Ronnie and Megan begin investigating the disappearance and things begin to line up with another missing person who was found murdered. Weaseling their way into being deputized in another county, Megan and Ronnie dig out family secrets and take on an ineffectual detective to bring home Ronnie’s mom. I love Megan’s character but this book seemed a little like Megan light, some of her ruthlessness was missing and her means a little bit cleaner than normal. Overall, the mystery was wonderful and the characters are some of my favorites for another good thriller from Mr. Olsen. I hope to see more of Megan doing all the Megan things I love in future books. My voluntary, unbiased, and nonmandatory review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.
I have always enjoyed the concept of this series. It reminds me of one of my favourite shows, Dexter. In this instalment, Megan is working on a personal case as it affects her friend and fellow officer, Ronnie. Ronnie’s mother goes missing without a trace. Ronnie and Megan work together to solve the mystery.
As always, Megan is funny, sarcastic and witty, especially in her thoughts. I always enjoy reading her comments and try to imagine the reaction of those around her if she actually voiced what is going on in her mind. The story is narrated in multiple POVs. We have the victim’s POV which was quite chilling, alongside Megan’s which allowed us to follow the investigation. We also have another POV for a different detective and timeline set in the past that brilliantly helped tie up all loose ends and provide a satisfying ending to the case.
This was an edge of your seat kind of cop thriller. It was dark, fast-paced and twisty, an enjoyable read in all ways. I can’t wait to dig in to the 6th book in the series.
Megan Carpenter does not fit the usual profile for a Police Detective, she has no qualms in speaking her mind, her thoughts precede what she says and most times they are quite the opposite of what she lets known. Cougar Point is the home of her partner Ronnie whose mother has been kidnapped, father and daughter do not have a close relationship and it seems like the marriage also wasn't doing well. The Police in town also wasn't doing much but it was not clear if it was because of the father's wishes for them to not get involved or if it was because of the Detective in charge. Families have secrets by those held by the Marsh family were at a par with Megan's, and the kidnapp has a lot of similarity with another crime that happened in the area. Megan and Ronnie will tear both cases apart and find the culprits. Be prepared for many twists and turns and lots of action. I thank Mr. Olsen, his publisher, and NetGalley for this ARC.
A kidnapping, danger and secrets untold All take place as events in this riveting story unfold. Relationships between members of families, too, All involve reactions and what they next do.
A call from her friend gets Detective Megan Carpenter involved, too, When the friend's mother disappears she'll look for every clue. Just who is involved and can she assist solve the case Even though other officers thinks she's out of her place.
Family secrets, twist and surprises, too, As well as everything the victim is going through. Can Megan help find Victoria before it is too late? She's determined to do so, that's not up for debate!
An engaging read from beginning to end One that to crime thriller fans I highly recommend. For my copy of this book I say thank you As I share with you this, my honest review.
Cougar Point tells the story of a woman who is kidnapped and held captive for ransom. There are alternating chapters descriptive of her ordeal with chapters about her family—husband (an attorney) and two daughters (an attorney and a police officer and the police officer’s friend/partner.) Along the way, there are territorial conflicts of authority between various factions of law enforcement, family conflicts as well as a murder which seemingly occurred 2000 miles away. The story is interesting but what I enjoyed most was the dialogue — not necessarily what was actually said but what was thought and wanted to be said. I thank NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this book prior to publication.
It is my honest opinion, after reading MANY of Gregg Olsen's books.....whether true crime or fiction......that he could write the back of the cereal box and I'd find it a 5 star read!!! He skillfully builds the story until you are hooked and cannot stop turning pages until the great reveal, which is a complete surprise since he's added twists and clues that have you changing your guess with every new chapter. A society woman, famous for her efforts to make the community around her a better place, is kidnapped. As the list of suspects grows, so do the consequences to everyone involved. With 3 POV, we see the secrets revealed and the confusion of those who thought they knew her best. An excellent thriller. Butthat's what I've come to expect from Gregg Olsen.
Gregg Olsen never disappoints. For murder mystery or true crime, I rarely read other authors, and this book reminded me why. I love the ongoing mystery surrounding the main character, Megan Carpenter, and the dynamic she has with her partner, Ronnie Marsh. I actually found myself going to bed earlier and earlier just so I could squeeze in a few more chapters before falling asleep!
The only small stumbling block for me was the number of detective characters. With the exception of the guilty one, I occasionally struggled to keep track of who was who. Still, the story was compelling enough that it didn’t take away from how much I enjoyed the book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
A very gripping mystery thriller. I haven't read the other books in the series but, detective Megan and Ronnie made a great team. I am intrigued by their past, about which the author hinted many times. It can be read as a standalone. I like the point of view of Victoria in between Lucas and Megan's. It keeps the reader on the edge. The fast-paced setting and the plot twist at the end are unexpected and shocking. Overall, it was an engaging and exciting thriller. Recommended. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC.
(3.5 stars) * Tropes/themes: * Police procedural * Multiple POVs * Flashbacks * Suspenseful * Dark * Tense * The pacing and writing style felt worse in this fifth book of the series. * So much telling versus showing. * The transitions/incorporation of the MC’s personal life in relation to the ongoing case were very abrupt and felt out of place every time. * It felt much longer than it needed to be but maybe that’s because I wasn’t engaged in the story much. * Content warnings: * Murder * Kidnapping * Mutilation
I really like this series of books featuring Megan Carpenter. I like the setting of Oregon and the characterisation, although I am a bit confused as to who Olivia is. Megan's friend Ronnie's mother goes missing and they both become involved in the investigation. The plotting is interesting and there is plenty of suspense and twists throughout to interest the reader. it is a bit dark in places but I really enjoyed the read. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
