An ex-con, a baker, and a competition with stakes higher than either of them could have anticipated. Dirty Little Midlife Debacle is a hot, hilarious, wild ride.
Kissing your coworker is a bad idea. Neurotic baker and business owner Jen knows this from experience.
An even worse idea? Signing up for a televised baking competition and partnering up with said coworker.
The treats they bake might be sweet, but the only thing they’re planning on sharing is the trophy.
Oh...and a bed. There’s only one bed.
All Jen has to do is make it to the end of the competition without letting her desires get in the way…until she discovers there might be more danger afoot than sharing a bed with a hot, hunky ex-con with a heart of gold.
This competition is about to get very, very interesting…
Lilian Monroe lives in a luxurious jungle treehouse surrounded by lush greenery, with an army of scantily-clad men with rippling abdominal muscles ready to attend to her every need.
No, wait. That's not true.
Lilian Monroe spends her days dangling her feet into her pool, while a scantily-clad pool boy with rippling abdominal muscles feeds her chocolate-covered strawberries and massages her back.
Okay, okay. You got me. That's not true, either. Let's try again.
Lilian Monroe lives at home with her two children, three dogs, and twelve chickens. Her husband likes to work shirtless in the back yard. His sweaty, gleaming abdominal muscles ripple with every movement and he—
I'm sorry. I have to stop. Fine, I'll admit it. That one isn't true either.
How about this: Lilian Monroe loves thinking about men with rippling abdominal muscles serving her hand and foot, and she wants you to think about them too! She is an avid reader, writer, and lover of all things romance.
She loves everything from bad boys to billionaires. Her books are packed with sizzling-hot heat, action, suspense, and everything from second chances to single dads. She hates cheating and loves a good happily ever after (and rippling abs).
The Hottie McHotpants in this installment has his swoon set on max! Too sweet, too perfect, and we find out he's a Bad Boy. Like for real. Kinda. Very fun.
I’ve wanted this couple’s story since the 3rd book in this series and I enjoyed it a lot for the most part. Jen and Fallon have been circling each other for awhile but after one super hot kiss and a bit of a misunderstanding with his ex-girlfriend, Fallon left town and Jen’s cookbook has taken off. Participating in a Bake-Off type show is not something Jen really wants to do but for the publicity and the hundred grand prize she’s willing to put herself out there even is she has to share the prize money with her partner. Little does she realize that after her original partner is injured, Fallon steps in and now they will be working together as well as sharing a living space. What can go wrong?
I adored this couple and their very unique personalities and quirks. Jen is a bit of a control freak and micromanager but she is also very calm and understanding especially when Fallon is concerned. It was easy to see they both had very real and deep feelings for one another, but they both were scared to admit them and get involved. Jen because she was worried Fallon would leave again and Fallon because of his past, something Jen knows nothing about and he feels he’s not good enough for her. The fact is neither one wants the other one to change, they like who they are just fine.
This was a busy story between the Bake-Off, new characters coming into town, and both Jen and Fallon dealing with their families and at times I felt the romance got a bit lost in the story. I would have liked more time with Jen and Fallon alone together talking, dating, enjoying each other’s company but a lot of those scenes were kind of glossed over we were just told they spent that time together but we didn’t see it.
As always I loved Jen’s gang of friends who have been there for each other through it all, everyone should be so lucky as to have this type of support.
Secrets, shenanigans, sexy times, and more abound making Dirty Little Midlife Debacle an entertaining and engaging seasoned romance.
To help promote her cookbook, Jen agrees to go on a reality cooking show. Fallon ends up being her sous chef and we learn SIGNIFICANTLY more about his past. And it's not good. Which made it hard for me to get into this relationship.
The drama occurs mainly in the last 25% of the book, after the reality show is over and her parents interfere, we learn more about his family situation, and that she has a stalker (!).
I’ve been waiting for Jen and Fallon’s story. The wait did not disappoint. I loved the premise of their story and their dynamic. The ending? Perfection.
Her biggest fear will bring her the greatest reward
I loved this book! The next chapter in the saga about the people of Heart’s Cove and it’s finally Jen and Fallon’s turn! This book is a wild ride from page 1 and what a ride it is! Full of all the crazy and wonderful people of Heart’s Cove, it is a definite must read! Jen’s been talked into a baking competition that will be televised. She’s a bit nervous but is shocked when she needs a new partner - and it’s Fallon! She hasn’t seen him since he quit his job at the Four Cups and left town. The two are forced to spend a lot of time together and they continue to get closer. But he is hiding his past from her and it will come back to bite him. The end of the competition will bring her parents to town and that will start trouble of it’s own. It will take the words of his sister and facing his past to make Fallon realize that he is more than his past. It will lead him back to Jen to try one more time to get the woman of his dreams and this time, he’s a winner!
I read an ARC copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
Steam really starts to pick up after book 4 and the pottery scene. I appreciate Lilian's attention to more details in this installment.
Some of my favorite sentiments from this book: "I am enough. H doesn't complete me; he centers me" and " I've been such an asshole to myself." This tale speaks to my heart as I work with incarcerated youth who find themselves being dehumanized by the horrible prison system. The hero in this jewel, Fallon, hails from a difficult youth space and carries that trauma into his adult life. This story line really resonated with the reality of the justice-involved youth system. Lilian did a great job depicting the horrors of that trauma and the difficulties escaping that trauma and all of its baggage. Great work!
The spider scenes are hilarious (coming from a true arachnophobe myself). The bonus scene that included the nod to the spider, "that perverted spider was watching us have sex" is so fitting to the funness of how these main characters find themselves with one another. ::swoon::
Of all the FMC’s in this series so far, Jen is the one I relate to the most, so it’s no wonder this was an instant 5 star for me. I flew through the pages, reveling in her quirks. Fallon was an absolutely swoon-worthy, supportive partner for her. Chef’s kiss!!
Well I’m my opinion Jen has a touch of ocd, and it’s not surprising either how she grew up.
This one had more twists and turns than any rollercoaster at Canada’s wonderland and left me with a ton of questions that I hope get answered in the next book.
This one is definitely my favourite in the series so far!
Jen and Fallon have each known about the other's attraction, but they each have their own explanation for why a relationship can't work between them and why they aren't worthy of love. They are wrong on all counts! Eventually they may realize that they are deserving and ready for eachother. As always Lilian Monroe delivers another Heart's Cove original love story that makes me want to move next door to Four Cups ❤
Dirty Little Midlife Debacle, Lilian Monroe's fifth installment in the Heart's Cove Hotties series, serves up even more romance and comedy through the story of uptight pastry chef Jen Newbank and easygoing sous-chef Fallon Richter. Her recipes have made the Four Cups Cafe a must-see destination in small-town Heart's Cove, California. His grace in the kitchen wows the women of the town. Both of them are scarred by past trauma. They need to work together to win a televised baking competition--and they need to heal by the power of the unconditional love they've been denying themselves.
Jen reluctantly signs up for "Boss Baker" on the advice of the publisher who presents it as an easy way to promote her cookbook. An introvert who panics at large crowds, Jen tries desperately to escape appearing on camera. When her guest house is attacked by a murderous murder of crows, the production staffer relocates her to the guest house occupied by her partner for the competition--Fallon, who had kissed her a year earlier and then left town for six months with no explanation. Surprise!
The show begins taping, and Jen's deadpan responses to leading questions set her up to be a fan favorite. Logical to a fault, Jen can't understand why her answers cause viewers to burst out laughing, but she does grow more at ease with strangers when she meets her competitors, including a couple of Texas cowboys, a pair of women who dress like Daisy Duke, and a Latina woman and her feisty mama'. The other teams draw Jen out of her shell and shamelessly root for her and Fallon to get together as a couple. Each chapter describes one of the elimination challenges, and the final hour of every challenge is filmed before a live audience, to Jen's horror and Fallon's amusement. The disasters that occur to each team, including Jen and Fallon, provide plenty of "you have to laugh or you cry" moments, and the judges become less intimidating and more human as the competition progresses. Behind the scenes, Jen and Fallon's relationship is progressing as well...
To say any more would provide spoilers, but suffice it to say that the rest of the book involves a reunion between Fallon and two special women, the crows doing an uncharacteristically good deed, and the identity of a mysterious figure in the woods being revealed. It also involves Jen standing up to her overbearing parents and Fallon learning that his past doesn't need to define his future. Finally, it becomes clear who is offering unconditional love and who is not.
The "I don't deserve her" (Fallon) / "I'm not good enough to do anything perfect" (Jen) wallowing goes on for far too long, costing the book a star, but the rest of the book is a masterpiece and made me laugh, root for Jen and Fallon as individuals and as a couple, and respond to the "rom" and "com" elements of this rom-com! I eagerly look forward to reading the other books in the Heart's Cove Hotties series.
Dirty Little Midlife Debacle Book #5 Fallon and Jen Couple in their mid 40’s, second chance (sorta), forced proximity
I wanted to love Fallon and Jen’s story, but it was so over the top in spots that I struggled with it.
Jen is a very talented baker. But she is not the easiest person to be around. She’s neurotic, a perfectionist, likes quiet and control. Not fond of crowds or being touched, especially hugging. Her three best friends and business partners love her in spite of her many quirks. Now she’s been signed up to be on a televised baking competition to help promote her new recipe book. Fallon left Hearts Cove six months ago. When Jen chose her book deal over him. Knowing he is not on her level, but wanting her just the same. After some thought, he’s come back to try again. When he learns that her partner for the competition is out, he jumps in to help. When crows , yes crows, take over her room, she’s forced to share living space with her new partner. Something that sends her neurosis into over drive. Until the door is opened and Fallon is there. Then she’s nervous for other reasons. Jen is a mess, but Fallon calms her. Together they make a very unlikely but unstoppable team. This did not read like two characters in their mid forties. They are both dealing with issues and circumstances from over twenty years in their past. And still acting like twenty something’s. Jen has never known unconditional love. Her parents demanded perfection, and she was rewarded when she was, but ignored when she wasn’t. Her parents were awful. I cannot imagine people that age acting the way they did. After his father’s death, Fallon and his sister were raised by their mother. They struggled financially. So being young and dumb, and wanting more, he hooks up with a bad group and ends up going to prison. And still continues to beat himself up over that decision. Seeing himself as dirty and not worthy of being loved. I loved seeing Jen finally step into her own. To stop relying on other’s opinions and truly see herself. And like what she sees. Fallon also has an awakening when he revisits his past and heals some old wounds. He finally sees he is no longer that eighteen year old boy. The townspeople were, as always throughly entertaining. We’re introduced to two new characters that I’m sure will show up in future books. Between the crows, Jen’s parents, the crazy men at the end and the endless inner monologues it was all too much. If you are looking for something light and quick to read this will do. Multiple points of view, no cheating, they do end up together in the end. I would read the series in order.
I was very interested in this couple from all the different interaction they had in the other books. It did not disappoint and surprised me even with a twist I truly did not see coming. I thought I knew what was going to happen but nope!
Jennifer Newbank is a talented baker and at forty -seven years old she has a newly published cook book. She’s part owner of the coffee shop Four Cups with several of her in other friends. She’s very independent and hasn’t been in a relationship since she was in her 20’s. She thought she had a connection with Fallon her easygoing sous-chef at Four Cups but right at the time she was getting her book going he left town. Now Jenn has an opportunity in an upcoming baking competition that is being televised which could help her career even more. She’s hoping to win & use the $100K to start her own bakery.
Fallon Richter was interested in his co-worker Jenn but when his ex-girlfriend came to town to help with Jenn’s cookbook the misunderstanding started piling up. Then Fallon up and left town with no explanation and was gone for 6 months before returning and slipping into the spot in the competition as Jenn’s partner.
These two characters are so different from one another. Jenn is a bit of a control freak, has a hard time with affection and has a sort of odd personality BUT she is nice and shows patience when helping others. Fallon is laid-back and thoughtful but he was too hard on himself. This story has some mystery to it which made it more interesting.
This series has been fun and I’m excited to keep reading the next books with Lily and then Nora.
I love this series, and I never thought I’d say that about women in their mid-forties, however this has ticked every box. This is a standalone romance with a HEA, however it contains characters that are in other books in the series, and believe me it would be a shame to miss out on any of them. Dirty Little Midlife Debacle is funny, heart wrenching and an addictive read. I haven’t been able to put it down!
Jen and Fallon have tiptoed around each other in their friends books, but now it’s their turn. I love the way Jen is so different from her peers. Fallon and her friends however just get her and love her for who she is. Watching their relationship bloom and grow has been compelling. Watching how her friends interact and support her and each other is heart warming and gives me warm fluffy feelings!
If you’re looking for a series/book with more mature women and men then you don’t need to look any further. I love Hearts Cove and it’s residence, and I know I’ll keep revisiting over the years!
I was trying to find the correct words to describe Jen and Fallon´s story. This book truly touched so deep in my heart because both of the main characters had self-steem issues.Jen is an amazing baker and she was in love with Fallon, althought she has been denying it for so long. On the other hand, Fallon gave up to fight for Jen because in his twisted mind, he thought that Jen deserved someone better than him. But the destiny forced them to spend some time together, when both of them were parteners in a baking contest. Anyway, the book is funny, witty, impredictable, easy to read and it made me cry more than once, because I could feel the pain inside Jen and Fallon. Nobody is perfect. People don´t have to look at your imperfections and flaws, they just need to let someone love them. A real love. A love that can heal when you think that you aren´t enough for someone. I nuts have one advice- read it, because the book is worth of reading. I can´t wait for the next book. Heart´s Cove is the best serie ever.
This has been the best series ever! Not once since beginning it have I not waited and thought when, when is so and so's book coming... This on, Jen and Fallon's novel, I thought would never get here! But is did, and it certainly did not disappoint! (Love the Crows, and "a murdering, murder of Crows", I laughed so hard at Jen's thought there...) Fallon, bless his heart, we have watched him from the beginning, obviously, in love with Jen. But, Jen's, "big, fat brain" simply doesn't compute, till now, the Boss Baker competition. Which is simply too much to describe, let alone give away, but is a hoot a minute once Jen learns who her new partner is... Ms. Monroe, I absolutely love this series, it hysterical, real, and addictive! So uplifting! If you are not grinning or laughing while reading you did not read this book, or any in this series! Now! Lily, hmmm ... Soooooo ... NEXT .. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Karen
PS. Let's not forget our newest Heart's Cove resident ...NORA! Soooooo ...?
Jen is an amazing baker who has signed up for this incredible baking contest with 8 other teams from around America. At the last minute the person she was supposed to be paired with got hurt and had to cancel. Now she finds her new partner is the man she worked with for a couple of years and who left town after they shared an amazing kiss. She also had a big crush on him. Now Fallon is back in town and they will be sharing a cabin for the next month. What could go wrong?
These two have an amazing chemistry. They bake together as they had for a couple of years seeming to always know what the other needs. They are so attracted to each other but both are very gun shy about starting something they both feel they are under qualified for. They both have hard things in their past and neither feels good enough for the other.
Such a great story. The friends they surround themselves with are awesome. Loved all the interaction with all of them. Love this series. Great job Lillian Monroe . Enjoy!
Dirty Little Midlife Debacle is the fifth book in the Heart’s Cove Hotties series written by Lillian Monroe.
What to expect: *Second Chance *Reality TV show *Forced proximity
Fallon and Jen are paired together on a baking reality TV show, but also share a history of pining for each other. Fallon feels like he isn’t good enough for Jen due to his past, Jen feels like she isn’t good enough for him because she chose her career over him in the past.
I always enjoying reading books about couples that are older, this book just seemed to be a lot of miscommunication and avoiding what is right in front of your face. I wanted to scream at the main characters to just talk to each other!!!
No OW drama, some OM drama in the form of two deranged ex coworkers of the FMC. Does have the dreaded third act breakup, they were separated for around a week I think.
This is the fifth book in the Hearts Cove Hotties series. You could read and enjoy this book as a standalone but you're missing some excellent books, go back and read them you won't regret it. Plus, all these books are connected by the friendships between the women. I absolutely loved Jen and Fallon's story. In previous books they've flirted with each other but Fallon left a year ago without saying anything leaving Jen to believe he left because of her. He's back in town and he's volunteered to be her partner in a baking contest. I loved watching these two get reacquainted with each other and stumble their way through love. Understanding why Fallon left and how he doesn't feel like he's good enough for Jen or that she won't want him when she learns the truth about his background. This book will have your feels all over the place.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Dirty Little Midlife Debacle is book 5 of the Heart’s Cove Hotties series and is perhaps the one I was most looking forward to.
If you’ve read this series then you’ve gotten to know our baker extraordinaire - Jen. I adore her. There is something special about her. I also am crazy for sexy Fallon. The gentle, tatted giant broke my heart when he left Hearts Cove.
In this book we get their story (no worries if this is your first in the series - it can be read as a standalone). Lilian does an amazing job of writing these two incredibly beautiful people. Both, for different reasons, are slightly broken. But that doesn’t stop them from desperately wanting, needing the other.
I was touched by their background stories and was rooting (hard) for them to get their happily ever after. When they did, it made my book loving heart happy.
I’m giving Dirty Little Midlife Debacle the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval, TBR and Enjoy!
Having read the other books in this series I was really looking forward to Jen and Fallon’s story. Jen is a analytical thinker. Ruled by her brain not her heart, until she meets Fallon. Their attraction is there from the start but when an opportunity comes Jen’s way she thinks she needs to choose between Fallon and success so Fallon moves away. Jen enters a baking competition and needs an assistant and it ends up being Fallon. Their time together brings back all the old feelings and things heat up between them. Jen finds herself realizing that career success is not everything and starts to open her heart to Fallon and others around her. Fallon is wary that he is not good enough for Jen due to his past (didn’t see that coming!) and let’s his insecurities and other people drive them apart. I didn’t think this was quite as funny as the previous books and would have liked a little more interaction with the other characters, but this is still a great addition to the series.
I have been waiting for this story. It has been torture watching these two circle around one other and the torture is continuing. Only this time it’s worse as we see it unfold from Jen and Fallon’s perspectives.
Jen is rational, logic-orientated, quirky and an introvert at heart. She is a really loveable character for both the reader and the other characters. Fallon is a total sweetheart, very protective and worthy of lots of swooning. His backstory was very surprising and I absolutely loved seeing things from his perspective. His love for her is deep and unconditional. Her love for him knows no bound. Together they made an amazing couple.
I don’t think I can find fault when it comes Dirty Little Midlife Debacle. I loved Jen and Fallon, watching a romantic relationship finally start to unfold between them, and learning more about them. They’re my favourite couple of the series and I cannot wait to see more of them in future books.
Since almost the beginning of this series, I have anxiously been awaiting for the story of Jen and Fallon. Lilian Monroe has done a brilliant job of teasing their chemistry throughout the previous Dirty Little Midlife books. It was so good to finally fill in some blanks and gain a full understanding of these two adorably lovable characters. I never could have imagined the backstory for Fallon and I loved the addition of his sister to their story. I love the spin of the cooking show and what it does for Jen especially. Cannot say enough how much I absolutely love this series! I would recommend it to anyone who loves HEA’s with amazing stories and characters. I am a HUGE fan of Lilian Monroe and Heartbreak Cove has a special place in my heart. Looking forward to all the other stories to come out of it.
Two different worlds trying to blend together when the odds are against them. Jen definitely the odd one in the group. Fallon was afraid of having close friend because he thought he would be judged because of past. Thinking he could help Jen, he asked a ex girlfriend to help Jen to write her pastry cook book. The ex had a selfish motive regarding Fallon. Using women institution, but wouldn't ask Fallon if it was true, she decided her book was more important than facing he feelings for Fallon. After Fallon told Jen how he felt about her and he had no interest in his ex, she still chose the book over him. Fallon decided to leave town since he felted he had no reason to stay. When he found out Jen had no partner for the bake competition, he volunteered. During the competition and right after, things changed for both of them. Secrets never sstay hidden.
en is a great baker and Jen gets signed up for a baking competion by Fallon's Ex girlriend who is her manager of a cooking book Jen had written. As the Competion is to begin Jen finds out she has new baking partner as the one she was to have had to cancell due to a accidentand Jen finds her new partner is Fallon the man she worked with for a couple of years at the cafe she is a part owner. After she and Fallon shared an amazing kiss then get into a fight about his ex that Jen thinks wants Fallon back. but Fallon left town for 6 months. Now Fallon is back in town and they will be sharing a cabin for the next month. What could go wrong?. . Jen who has had an attraction to Fallon for some time now. Fallon shres his history and thinks Jen wouldn't want him if she knew. So get the book and find out if Jen and Fallon finally get togehter.
Wow….I loved every bit of this book. Probably my favorite couple, and it’s really hard to make that bold statement. So many times I said, “one more chapter then I’m going to bed,” only to read 2 more chapters. I was interested in Fallon’s story the first time he and Jen were mentioned together several books ago. I never imagined his back story would be what it was, and I couldn’t love him more then I do!!! It was interesting to see Jen, the amazingly competent baker have such an interesting back story as well. Jen and Fallon were perfectly written for each other. I live this series because the characters are my age, and they have been through similar life struggles. Another amazing book in this series.
Of all the characters from this series of midlife friends, Jen was the most difficult to get to know. She is super smart, driven, very nerdy & stand-off-ish. She definitely has her own baggage. And Fallon was not really all that well-defined in the previous books, so he seemed a bit unknown.
But in usual fashion with the Heart’s Cove Hotties, all the blanks get filled in, we see how the weirdness that is Jen is a perfect fit for the big, warm-hearted Fallon, who has some secrets of his own.
Since I really like the other members of this gang, I really wanted more of their group interactions, which was a bit light in this book.
After their kiss happens and Fallons ex comes around hoping for another shot, Jen pushes her feelings aside for him so that she can focus on her cookbook. Six months later Jen is entered into a baking contest by the same ex of Fallons who just happens to be the one who helped publish her book. When her partner gets injured and can’t help Jen out, the show finds a replacement. Fallon has come back to town and over hears that she needs a partner for the competition. Before he can second guess himself he volunteers. It’s sweet torture to be next to Jen after so many months apart. During the competition things start to heat up and neither can deny their feelings anymore.
I lost my original review because of pushing the wrong button, which has happened too many times. It makes me to not want to write something again because I thought I will never match the first one. It would be a disservice to the author not to say how great this book and the series has been. I have enjoyed meeting all the people and learning about their problems...looking forward to more. Fallon and Jen's love story was filled with good, loving friends, intrigue, suspense, laughter, tears and a murder of crows (which is what a group of crows are called and for good reason). The mention of crows gave me a scare because I have witnessed what they can do. It's all good in the end. It's time I get to the next book. Written by Cindy :)
I think Fallon & Jen are my favs so far in the series. Don’t get me wrong - this gal tribe all have great love stories: Fiona & Grant, Simone & Wes, Candice & Blake, Trina & Mac, and now Jen & Fallon. Can’t wait to finish the series & see what happens! Their story started at the beginning of the series & it was nice to see how their relationship developed over time. All the books can be read as stand-alones. I recommend reading them in order to get the full experience & get to know the characters. You’ll fall in love with the inhabitants of Heart’s Cove and never want to leave. Now go get the books & start your own adventure….you can thank me later lol!
Opposites attract Nerdy/awkward girl Ex-con/blue collar MMC Older FMC/Older MMC Small town romance
Fallon and Jen are really a great couple. I loved that this book in the series focused on the conflict OUTSIDE of the couples' head, as this one flowed as a much better (and less angsty) read. The addition of a cooking competition and the way that was written definitely was a fun addition to the series.
Fallon's hiding that he's an ex-con. Jen's a recovering perfectionist. We learn about both of their inner workings through the backdrop of a cooking competition. The crows were a fun little scene or two and the food sounded sublime.
Trigger warning for spiders, crows and a ruined cherry pie.
