Thanks for BookSirens for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

Full disclosure - the first two books are on my TBR list, but this is the first book I have read of the series. I did not feel as though I was missing much though; the series is called Maitland's Rogues, but the Maitland character in this story was a secondary character that, while his plotting and actions drove the story and provided impetus for the MMC to act as he did, he did not have a meaningful relationship with the main characters, except as being perceived as conniving opposition/a villain.

This is a clean historical romance, with a murder-mystery/intrigue/conspiracy storyline, hidden identity, enemies to lovers, childhood trauma themes.

Emmaline Stanhope was left in dire straits with the passing of her scholar father. With him gone, she found herself inheriting unexpected debts. Following upon that, her aunt, an aging but renowned actress, is forced to retire when she becomes increasing debilitated by a mysterious illness. They move in together and because of their straitened circumstances, are forced to seek creative ways to earn funds, including starting a matchmaking service.

Unfortunately one of their clients suffers a dramatic death in front of their abode shortly after engaging Emmaline's services. Not only was this traumatizing for Emmaline and her aunt - witnessing the gruesome demise, but also being drawn into a Bow Street investigation into the death. But unknown to them, their client was engaged in possibly treasonous dealings and his sudden death points suspicion at Emmaline and her possible involvement with his cohorts.

This brings Emmaline into the line of site of Robert Tavish, reclusive scholar of the sciences, and unfortunate heir to an earldom, but also the nephew of a Duke with political goals who strongarms Robert into investigating Emmaline as a suspect in the death of the man.

Robert takes on the identity of a prospective bridegroom, seeking a wife and engages Emmaline's services and initially they get along like two wet cats in a burlap sack. Robert is surly, hostile, and anti social, and Emmaline is antagonized by his behaviours and cannot help but get her back up at his behaviours and presumptions.

Robert is, despite his outward appearances, a man who finds himself intrigued and attracted to the feisty Emmaline, and is quickly convinced of her innocence, and finds his protective instincts rearing when he discovers that other factions are looking to hang the murder of the man on Emmaline, despite the lack of any evidence implicating her. To protect her, Robert whisks her, her aunt, and their cat away to Scotland and his family home.

Both Emmaline and Robert are prickly characters, but their prickly exteriors hide their vulnerabilities - Robert with his childhood trauma with an abusive father, and the guilt over not protecting his mother enough. Add onto that a lack of closure on some of his family issues (rebellion against family expectations, not being there for his grandfather's death, the suspicion of his mother's suicide, etc), and you can get why Robert is surly, brusque, and has a whole lot of armour hiding his heart. Emmaline likewise carries her own angst, including a strong streak of stubborn independence, and anxiety about people discovering her vulnerability/disability.

This was a fair, middling enjoyable story to read. Robert and Emmaline were two very prickly characters. At times I found myself getting quite annoyed and losing patience with them, in their behaviours and reactions. But what made the story more enjoyable for me was the secondary characters. Including the unrequited love/hidden story of the butler and his quiet heroism, Emmaline's over the top, dramatic, but deeply vulnerable aging aunt, and Robert's much more affable, and astute uncle. They all added a gentler emotional depth, and some humour as well to the story, and I found myself more interested in what they were doing in the background than the central story of Emmaline and Robert.

Some spoilers throughout this review-

Although this is the first book I've read in this series, this is not the first book I've read by this author.

In the previous books I've read by Ms. Putman, I've really enjoyed how she writes about the historically real surroundings of her characters as well as giving her characters real personalities. And her latest book, Lord Difficult is just as enjoyable!

There is a lot covered in this book. The heroine, Emmaline, is working as a matchmaker and living with her aging aunt (who used to be an actress and now occasionally reads Tarot cards for customers). A customer has just been run over by a mail coach immediately after exiting their building and there is suspicion that Emmaline might have had something to do with the man's death.

Robert Tavish is sent by his uncle, from the war office, to go undercover and find out if Emmaline might have been involved in the man's death and possibly treason.

Robert Tavish is a professor and is not at all interested in looking for a wife in his own life. He only wants to do his research on the bones he's digging up.

The initial interactions between Emmaline and Robert are written well and definitely show the personality of each character. Robert truly doesn't want a wife and really has no idea how to get one. Emmaline is bewildered and confused since he doesn't seem to actually want a wife but keeps telling her he does.

Aa the story progresses, and Robert takes Emmaline and her aunt to Scotland to hide her from potential harm, we are given glimpses of Robert's quite troubled childhood through his own memories. We are also told certain aspects of it from the perspective of the family servant, Gibbons, who we find out, has his own story to tell.

We are also given glimpses of Aunt Heloise's life as an actress.

As in the other books I've read by Ms. Putman, romance blooms not just for our main characters but for secondary characters as well.

And I've found the descriptions of the locales intriguing enough to look them up myself. When I looked up the island of Staffa, which Robert shows to Emmaline when he takes her to Oban, I could just see Robert (the geologist/anthropologist) discussing with Emmaline how the very unique structures were formed.

The romance between Emmaline and Robert was gradual (no insta love here!)and we see glimpses of it as the book progresses, through Robert's and Emmaline's thoughts and how they interact with each other.
However Robert has issues from his childhood to work through before he can truly find love.

Maitland is in the book insisting Emmaline is involved in the death of the man from the beginning. Although he has no proof, he wants to further his own career by turning Emmaline in. I am very interested to read his personal story! We get a few snippets of the kind of man he is at this time, which is self centered and self serving, and it will be interesting to see how he evolves.

Emmaline is a strong woman who has a limp. She is very determined to learn self protection from Robert. She is also dealing with her deceased father's unfinished manuscripts on fairy tales, and is caring for her aging aunt. Emmaline also finds out some interesting revelations toward the end of the book to help her move forward with her life.

There are some interesting aspects of early hypnotists, at the time known as mesmerists.

There is action, mystery and romance as well as witty banter and the healing of fractured pasts. (And I really enjoyed the Tarot cards readings!!)

I was given an advanced copy of this book through Booksirens. All opinions my own.

Lord Difficult was a delightful, surprising, and at time mysterious read.

Our hero and heroine, Robert and Emmaline, and complex, good-hearted, and stubborn - which as any reader knows can make for a frustrated reader when they can't just get to the good stuff. But boy was the journey a delight. I won't go into much detail on the conflict that brings the two together or the mystery within it, except to say that I found it to be well written, intriguing, and with many twists and turns.

I found Emmaline to be a refreshing and new take on a character from this era. She knows and follows all the rules of society while not being a part of the ton due to the poverty her academic father left her in. She takes her role as caregiver for her aunt very seriously and makes many sacrifices and takes risks in order to fulfill this role. She has a sharp mind and is brave as all get out - but she does all of this with grace and for the most part, within the rules of society. She is met with challenge after challenge but takes it all on with strength. With all that, she is disillusioned with love and happiness, and a bit of a martyr if I do say so myself. But never to the point of getting in the way of enjoying the story - in fact it is part of the story.

Robert, though an Earl, had a very difficult young life, which comes to light throughout the story. He too is disillusioned with love and happiness, and takes his solace with his work, rarely interacting with others and steering clear of women. When we first meet him, he seems harsh and rude, but it doesn't take long for his heart of gold to reveal itself.

Both characters seem to be fighting their destinies - to be loved, to be among family, etc. Sometimes you just want to shake them both - but luckily, they challenge each other enough that we get there in the end.

Perhaps the most delightful part of this book are the side characters - Emmaline's aging actress aunt, Heloise, Robert's mojo dojo Gibbons, a mysterious man named Drew, and many more. They provided levity, color, humor, and most importantly, love, to this story with two rather uptight leads.

I highly recommend this read for anyone who enjoys the beauty of Scotland, a big man with a big heart, a strong female lead, and zany and interesting side characters to add a bit of flavor.

I absolutely loved this book!

At first glance, the cover might lead you to believe Lord Difficult is a hot and steamy bodice ripper, but I must tell you, this is not that kind of book. In fact, I think a more classic design, something reminiscent of Jane Austen’s works, would better suit its tone. This is a book about love, not sex—and it’s all the better for it.

From the first page to the last, Lord Difficult captivated me. The writing is intelligent, and the characters are well fleshed out. Emmaline Stanhope, the Regency-era matchmaker at the heart of the story, is fabulous. She’s strong, clever, and knows exactly how to hold her own, even when faced with Robert Tavish—an intimidating man who seems to defy every convention of polite society.

The dialogue between Emmaline and Robert is one of the book’s greatest strengths. Their back-and-forth is witty and sharp but never feels forced or contrived. Their chemistry builds slowly, creating an emotional connection that’s far more satisfying than anything rushed or overtly sensual. It’s the kind of romance that allows you to savor every moment, every exchange, and truly invest in their growing relationship.

Robert himself is swoonworthy in his own way. Beneath his gruff exterior, he has layers that unfold beautifully as the story progresses, revealing a depth of emotion that makes him impossible not to root for. The way his backstory is woven into the narrative is both heartbreaking and heartwarming, adding dimension to his character and making the reader care about him more and more with each passing chapter.

But it’s not just Robert and Emmaline who shine. The entire cast of characters is engaging, and each contributes to the development of the story. Her Aunt Heloise is a character so wonderful, you just know if this ever became a movie, they’d have to cast an A-list actress to play her because she would steal every scene—in the best possible way. Heloise’s wit, charm, and presence add so much to the story, and she’s an absolute joy to read.

In short, Lord Difficult is an enchanting Regency romance with the perfect balance of humor, wit, and heart. If you’re looking for a thoughtful, well-written love story with strong characters and an intelligent plot, look no further. This book is a gem, and I highly recommend it.

Lord Difficult was everything I'd expect and desire from a historical romance. Elements of this romance harken back to traditional romance novels similar to Catherine Coulter's in which the reader is deeply immersed in the historical elements of the story through the unique writing style. This book was an interesting blend of, what feels like Victorian England and Scottish elements that make up so many historical romances. The characters are well-developed and have strong backstories; I especially enjoy the profession of the MMC, so unique! Throughout, little tidbits of secrets and interesting pieces of information are revealed, keeping the story moving at a relatively consistent pace. This is a well-written slow burn with minimal spice.

So, Here are my Top 5 for Lord Difficult by Eileen Putman

Profession of Mr. Robert Tavish – Mr. Tavish has a very unique backstory and profession as an archeologist. Not only is this a unique profession to see in a romance novel, but definitely in a historical romance!

Character Development of Mr. Robert Tavish – Throughout the novel, Mr. Tavish’s character changes, developing in subtle ways that ultimately come to show a reasonable development behind his character.

Side Character Backstories – I think John is my favorite! His role throughout the story remains a strong, solid presence that helps to provide a backbone that runs the length of the novel.

Odd Elements – There are a few elements in the novel that are just odd enough or “off-the-wall” enough that it helps to keep the reader absorbed and wondering what happens. These elements are ingrained in the story well enough that they don’t necessarily stand out as obviously odd, but rather, curious and interesting.

Standalone/Interconnected – My absolute FAVORITE series to read are the ones that can be considered standalone with each couple gaining their happily-ever-after yet having undercurrents of unanswered questions that run through the series.

I really enjoyed reading the very entertaining book by one of my favorite authors. Ms Putman writes a romance with drama, intrigue, and adventure that had me at first chapter. The characters were fully developed with thoughts and feelings of their own. Even though this is part of a series, it can be read as a stand alone.
Emmaline Stanhope is a resourceful lady who supports herself along with her elderly aunt. She has a match making business and has in the past read tarot cards. They are just trying to survive the best way they can. When one of their clients gets run over by a mail wagon they couldn't believe it. The man just did not move when the driver told him to.
When Robert Tavish finds out about Emmaline and her business, he decides to hire her to find him a bride. But there is more to his interest in getting into the lives of the two women. He really is sent by his uncle to investigate the death of the man who was killed.
Emmaline is one tough cookie when she finds out what Robert is not telling the whole truth. When she is abducted and rescued, Robert decides to take her and her aunt to his home in Scotland.
I felt that both of them had issues with trust and being truthful. They also have an attraction that builds and turns to very sweet romance. I love a happy ever after for these two who were meant to be.
I appreciate Net Galley for this ARC title in which I gave an honest review.

Delightful Double Romance

I am not usually a fan of slower reads, but I will make an exception for Lord Difficult.

This lengthy book by Eileen Putman is complex, but it is also an absorbing character-driven tale. I wasn't in love with (hero) Robert, but he was worth redeeming, which is exactly what (heroine) Emmaline does in a round-about way. In the process, both Robert and Emmaline discover deeply seeded secrets within their own hearts that eventually lead to a HEA love.

This author has a very easy-flow writing style that allowed my imagination to see all of the backdrops and hear all of the unspoken words between the lead characters. Even the supporting characters had their own complex personalities and secrets.

All in all this is an entertaining read that will pull in a romance-loving reader and keep the pages turning.

Content 411: This is a fairly clean read. There is some mild swearing, some passionate kissing and some “thought of” and implied physical intimacy.

Disclosure: I received this book from BookSirens. I voluntarily read this book, and this is my honest review.

I had a tough time with this book. It took me a long time to read. It was interesting but it never went in any single direction for any length of time. I was expecting a grumpy-sunshine romance about an unsuccessful matchmaker and her beastly client. This was actually an emotional story about guilt and regret. There was very little going on in the romance department. There was a secondary couple which was at times more exciting than the main couple.
One of the secondary characters was a young man named Drew Maitland. He seemed like he might be a future hero in training. In this book he was a bit of a villain. I mention him because he was the only person that had the Maitland name. I therefore don't understand why this series is called "Maitland's Rogues." The actual hero wasn't even a relation!
I wish I could have liked this book more because some parts of it were quite good. Unfortunately, the story went in too many different directions and the romance just never took off.

Well written, hard to put down book. Full of drama, intrigue, love, emotions, spies, action, adventure and lots of twists. Emmaline is a young lady who is trying to support her Aunt and herself. She starts a marriage finder business plus can tell tarot cards, learning them from her Aunt. A man shows up and wants a bride but as he leaves he dies by being run over by the mail wagon. So Tavish is sent in by his Uncle to find out if she killed him or is part of a group of spies . Emmaline has nothing to due with the death but others want to make her out to be guilty. Tavish takes her and her Aunt to Scotland after a fake kidnapping and rescue, trying to make this other man as a friend who wants to help her. As they spend more time together , feelings show and Tavish has a hard time getting across how he really feels. Love blooms all around them with the other fabulous characters each having the same issues. Great story to to curl up with and enjoy. Would strongly recommend it to everyone.

I received this story and leave this unbiased, honest review.

Wow, Wow, Wow! Yes this is the adventure I needed. Eileen Putman is a new author for me and I am so excited to have found her. This book was what I needed. We follow matchmaker Emmaline who is trying to survive. Following an unexpected tragedy with her last client her new client is going to be her most difficult one yet. He is the most secretive and stubborn man she has ever met, and yes she has noticed how handsome. Robert Tavish comes to Emmaline to find a wife, well sort of. He is out to find out why her last client mysteriously dies. Now what happens when they become attracted to each other and things get complicated?
Full of surprises, mystery, intrigue, and some of the best passion and real chemistry I have seen in a while. Putmans attention to detail and characters with a respect for the history of the time are one of the reasons I love her writing. This is the romance and adventure creating a perfect story that you won’t be able to put down. Enjoy!!!

Well this is a bit different and in a very good way.

A very slow burn Regency romance meets “The Thirty Nine Steps” for intrigue. I laughed out loud, I cried, got angry and loved it.

It is not just about the two leads of the main love story. You have multiple interwoven stories with the supporting characters drawn in great detail and brought to life. Nobody is perfect and all the quirks of human frailty are on display.

I won’t tell you about the other characters as it is so much more interesting to see them emerge and watch them develop during the story

Can’t recommend this book enough. Not read this author before but after reading this book I have already bought one of the previous in this series.

The characters here are charming – that’s something we can all agree on. Absolutely delightful main characters – I laughed out loud several times about Robert’s grumpiness - and the side characters sparkled. I was ready to love the relationship between Robert Tavish and Emmaline Stanhope.. it would have been great if they got together romantically, in this romance, that should have been romantic. I jest.. but in all honesty, there can be a fine line between a slow burn and a no burn – and in this case it was miles and miles. The set up for the story was so intriguing but as I read on the plot wasn’t plotting, the threats weren’t threatening, and danger didn’t really materialize. Simultaneously, too much was happening and not enough.

Emmaline Stanhope is trying to keep she and her aunt from being out on the streets as a matchmaker. Her last client ended up being run over by a mail coach. Her newest client is Robert Tavish, the most difficult man to deal with. His people skills are nil and he comes across as very cold. Emma isn't afraid to tell him to his face of his short comings. His only passion is fossils. Accused of murder, Emma's life is in danger and Robert doesn't hesitate to protect her. This is a laugh out loud especially with Emmaline's aunt and her control over sticky situations. The woman has a power like no one else. Poor Robert is in a class by himself.

Focusing on the relationship building for the main characters, that was a very slow burn romantic. There's a lot of details that all tie together but this and the sidebar stories within kind of weighed things down. There were times when the roles of secondary characters dominated instead of supporting the main characters. The "history" and locales are all interesting and add lineage understanding. I did get to know and like the main characters and understood their independent natures and heartfelt challenges. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

One word comes to mind upon finishing this book… captivating! This story will hook you in and keep you guessing. There are a few stories going around the main one, but they all intertwine. You will also get viewpoints from other characters, not just the MMC & FMC. A definite so build, but worth sticking till the end. The story is one of growth and overcoming fears, no matter how big or small.

A professor / lord and a matchmaker cross swords in this slow burn romance. Written well with descriptive prose, good dialogue, and a whole lot of intrigue and mystery, this book was refreshing. Both Emmie and Robert are great characters, real, with their strengths and flaws. The side characters were also pretty well written and appropriately involved in the storyline.

I recommend this book.

I mostly enjoyed this story because it is well written and the main characters are likeable. It does have a few things that I didn't care for, but they were minor. The story was a bit long; I was getting a bit impatient with our main charcters taking so long to figure out their relationship. It is a sweet love story.

This was a very entertaining love story. A death sets off an investigation of murder, the suspects being a nice and her aunt. The drama and different llor twists and turns were very interesting and engaging. Rhe often humorous and witty banter between the characters was delightful. I enjoyed not only one but two romances that occurred, and the ending was wonderful. I highly recommend reading!

What a fun, convoluted, twisted tale! It has mystery, suspense, distrust, love and so much more. Emmaline is the last to speak with a man before his death and suddenly becomes the prime suspect. Add in a duke who pushes his nephew to investigate, a canary that doesn't sing and an abduction and the wild ride is on! You will enjoy this well written, witty work!

Lord Difficult is I think the third book in a series called Maitland’s Rogues. I haven’t read the first two and this can be read as a standalone.
Emmeline Stanhope has to fend for herself and her aunt after the death of her father so starts a matchmaking service. When she falls under suspicion after one of her clients dies just after visiting her, Robert Tavish [heir to an Earldom] is tasked by his uncle to investigate. Posing as a client Robert has to find evidence against her but quickly realises she is innocent. Now Robert will do all he can to protect her. He takes her, her aunt and their cat to his home in Scotland.
Both Robert and Emmeline are characters with a lot of depth and vulnerabilities. It does take quite a while for them to realise and act on their feelings towards one another but ultimately they are a solid and likeable pair. There are a lot of secondary characters with their own stories and we are just as invested in their stories. I loved Gibbons and was happy that he finally received some happiness.
This is an enjoyable and well written story with several strands to the plotline. Maitland himself was a slightly villainous character in this book but I am not entirely sure why the series is named after him. I did enjoy it and will be going back to find the first books in the series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Emmeline was an equal partner/opponent to Mr. Tavish and could go toe to toe with him at every turn. I liked that she's not a shrinking violet and gives as good as she gets. Emmaline's aunt Heloise was tactical and intelligent. I admired her dealings with Andrew. It was heartwarming to see how many protectors Emmaline had when she needed them most. This says a great deal for her character. The ending was sublime and left me with a lot of feels. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.
