A chalk letter turns into a snake when a rookie teacher realises she is afraid of children. A chocolate box sets free the past of a young mother overwhelmed by her newborn baby. A rivulet of blood runs down the hands of an artist who might, quite possibly, have killed her soulmate.
Inspired by the Greek tales of troubled women, powerful artefacts, and deadly curses, these stories peer through the cracks in the everyday lives of twelve modern-day heroines and explore their unconscious fears and hopes.
“But why did she feel as if her reality just cracked open?”
That was such a lovely read! The language and the storytelling are so beautiful and soft and compelling. There are a lot of details to understand the characters but not too much that you would've been overwhelmed by it. In every story I found something to relate to and that evoked so many emotions in me which is always important when reading. My favourite chapters are Medusa and The Name, literally so so good!! By the way, I absolutely adore how Greek tales are intertwined into the stories. I'm sure I'll be re-reading it in future at least a few more time. I definitely recommend this collection of stories to everyone, especially women, you won't regret it
A beautiful collection of stories about women and their struggles, different at the first sight but similar at their core (and some painfully familiar to me). All the melancholy, fear, uncertainty and bittersweet joy of being a woman in one book.
