Do you ever finish a comic and think 'what was that?'? If you haven't, you will after reading this. It's pretty jumbled and feels like it's telling an already established narrative - which it isn't - making it a confusing read that fails to wow. One that will more than likely rely on the pre-loved characters and dynamics to pull it through, Williams is yet to show that she can pull this off convincingly.
I'm quite fond of Punchline and she becomes a Twitch streamer here with a bunch of mind control and murder. She's also very hot. So are the rest of the Sirens.
Read issues 1-4 (of 4) because they came in my comics subscription but found this both insipid and not pretty enough to make up for it. Bummer.
problems with this run - 1) lots of references to the previous run (with an unrelated name, and no character introductions so you had better just already be a D.C. head cause only 2/4 are obvious from their costumes and plenty of exposure... it took a while to recognize Poison Ivy even and it didn't help that no one calls her that!) 2) wittiest banter is literally from "Dumb Bunny" - the rest are just bad volleys between the ladies annoying each other 3) no one really seems to be working together (except perhaps Ivy) or like any of their teammates (except perhaps Harley Quinn being horny for Ivy) 4) perhaps it's due to this being very cowboy-heavy but the gals are all drawn with the ugliest horse faces! Harley has never looked so rugged! 5) villain doesn't seem to have a plan except ENSLAVE PEOPLE ---> "Step Two" --> MAKE MONEY
Maybe 3.5 stars? I haven't read the original run so I wasn't sure what to expect from this one. It's goofily entertaining, though with no real substance, much like a lot of books these days. The art for DC comics is also not impressing me lately. Save for Jamal Campbell on the Superman run, most of what I've been reading lately looks halfhearted to say the least.
I don't know who the hell White Rabbit is, but there's a character that looks a lot like her in the current Amazing Spiderman run, so I'm probably going to get them confused. Not sure what to think of this run so far, but the sinister action feels on brand with the times, so that at least makes it feel somewhat fresh.
I hesitated on whether to read this, I assumed it would be in the same vein as Birds of Prey. I'm glad I was wrong. This was awesome. Are they in a VR world? Or are the humans being used as avatars? It was such a cool storyline. Even better than the story was the preview for....... WORLD WAR V!! So pumped for this.
This story is only four issues long so I did finish it but it has to be one of the worst comics I've ever laid my eyes upon. It was so dumb and read like a Boomer had written it, male gaze and cringe take on Internet culture included, despite being authored by a millennial woman. Suffered through the four issues and learned my lesson to never again pick up something from Williams.
A loooot is happening here. I'm always happy to see Punchline and of course Ivy and Harley are favs of mine as well. Have no idea who shot bunny is, so that's interesting!
