Hendrik Magdalenus Bruna was een Nederlandse grafisch vormgever, tekenaar en schrijver van kinderboeken. Hij werd wereldberoemd met zijn kinderboekjes over nijntje.
My two favorite things..Art history and miffy!! I love love love art history accessibility, so this was a win on that front. I loved at the end how they show Bruna’s artistic process of creating miffy. This was such a cute little story, and a great way to introduce children to art. My only critique was the Jeff Koons inclusion (iykyk), of course it’s personal preference, but I don’t consider him an artist per se. Still such a cute book and okay Nick Cave mention!!!
So for some reason I expected this to be a book about the creator of Miffy. It wasn’t. It was about a couple of different artists and their styles. I personally feel like the book is too basic to be appealing to even young children, but well, I’m an adult and don’t have any children, so I wouldn’t really know.
[I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.]
I love Miffy more than seems reasonable I guess. I read a Miffy book to my 10 day old newborn 25 years ago and have been drawn to Miffy ever since. I have been to Dick Bruna Huis in Utrecht. I have a gold Miffy doll. I long for a Miffy light. You get the gist.
I love reading Junior Non Fiction especially about Art and Nature or other subjects that particularly interest me. So naturally I snapped up this book on a visit to Kinokuniya last week. And I read most of it same day.
You can learn so much rather quickly from Junior Nonfiction. I did know the majority of the 24 artists featured but learned things about them. Learned about the previously unknown artists. But was briefly confused about Nick Cave making masked costumes. Not the musician Nick Cave! Ah..
I even learned more (relearned?) about Dick Bruna’s illustration technique.
Delightful. Well worth flicking through the pages.
We absolutely loved reading Miffy and the Artists together. This book turned out to be so much more than a children’s story — it became a little journey into the world of art for both of us. We learned about different artists, their unique styles, shapes, colours and the ways they see the world.
What made it truly special is that we read it side by side with my daughter, stopping at every page, looking closely at each painting and discussing what we saw. It was amazing to notice how differently we interpreted the same picture and how many new ideas and emotions it sparked.
This book is incredibly knowledgeable, beautifully designed, and perfect for introducing children to art in a simple, playful way. We enjoyed every moment of exploring it together, and it definitely inspired us to look at art more thoughtfully in the future.
A wonderful book to read, learn, and talk about — for children and parents alike.
For 75 years the cute and adorable rabbit Miffy has been teaching kids about all sorts of things. In Miffy And The Artists by Dick Bruna and published by Thames & Hudson, Miffy introduces kids to 25 important artists from the past up to the present.
In simple to understand text with illustrations, accompanied by works by each artist, Miffy offers short, concise comments about each artist and their work, with words and sentences kids can easily grasp.
The slim, hardbound book lets kids discover artists and what inspired them to make great art.
What a wonderful way to introduce kids to art: simple, colorful and fun accompanied by Miffy the rabbit.
Psalms 127:3 - Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
I gravitate toward books that introduce a young audience to art and artists - I've been taking T to our local museum since he was a baby and we've found that books featuring new and familiar art have been a great way to enhance the connection with and appreciation for art. I love how accessible this Miffy book makes art for young readers. Bruna invites readers to engage with the art and consider their own opinions, imagination, and reaction to Matisse, Kahlo, and more. Back matter offers details about each artist and piece featured. This is one of my favorite art introduction books for little kids - it has great breadth, fun questions, and adorable Miffy!
This is a sweet, preschool appropriate introduction to some of the world’s most recognizable artists and pieces of artwork. Miffy is celebrating her 70th birthday this year and while this book is not a story about Miffy, she does act as your partner or guide as you read through the book. It is a little like walking through an art gallery with a young child and helping them see themselves or the things that interest them in the art. This book would be best read one on one with a child so you can talk about what you see and answer the prompts throughout together.
A wonderfully simple and yet comprehensive juvenile nonfiction book with Miffy, the white bunny, as our guide, through various artists and their work. Showcased are a wide range of artists and creators from Andy Warhol to Frida Kahlo, Keith Haring to Marcel Duchamp. Would be a terrific addition to any library, storytime and/or class setting with younger kids, introducing them to the world of art. Easy to share a page or two if your audience is very young.
Great introduction to artists for kids. I loved the inclusion of Dick Bruna’s artistic process for Miffy. The questions prompted creativity and reflection, so this would be perfect for a kid already interested in art, or to help them develop an interest in art.
Someone else said it but why Jeff Koons… Nick Cave being included was cool though.
