repetitive series - one star
this series started off so fun. i was kicking my feet giggling. however, as the series progressed, the storyline got more and more repetitive. i'm talking every book explains everything we already know. the duke's first law, the essence exchange, golden chains, what an ungez is, and immortality... it is all explained at least 3 dozen times.
I feel like the plot-line of the prophecy was just put in there to keep the storyline going and it was given way too much hype. the "prophecy" could have all been solved and avoided if these demons and humans, at their big age, sat down and had a conversation and came up with a game plan. it was also so stupid. you mean to tell me that the girl-band from hell (thr33peat - made up of 3 very annoying and entitled women) all have to sing a three-part-harmony to put an animal to sleep? it made no sense and this plot-line (as well as the last book) should have been skipped altogether.
this book was 85% summarization of the last 7 books. (after the third book the rest were mostly summaries). on top of that, this book was 10% summarization of what had already happened in this book. guess what, i was there, i read it, it was 20 pages ago, i don't need you to summarize it. only 5% of this book was plot. i understand a small amount of summarization is necessary and i'm fine with that but the entirety of this book was a summary of the last 7. if you want to do a series of interconnected standalones like this then do a summary chapter or "things to know" list in the prologue so i don't have to waste me time re-reading what i have already read
not to mention the plot holes. in book 1 and the novella, Shannon got a tattoo that said "Mal" on her chest over her heart and it was a plot point of how it matched Mal's tattoo of her name and how he loved it. however, in this book, Shannon says she is trying to convince Mal to let her get his name tattooed on her.
now, lets talk characters. all of the female characters are the same. i mean if you told me to look at the way they talk and the way they act i would tell you they are the same person. they are all pick-me's. the only difference between these girls is that they have different occupations (except 3 of them end up having the same occupation). the mmc's are precious and baby girl but, just like the fmc's, they are the same men in different fonts. they all (the fmc's) use the same language and speak as if they are 15 and emo. i mean they use words like "chick", and a frw other words i can't say on a review because they are "explicit". they are incapable of talking like adults and every time they said "chick" (ex: "this chick needs some shadow d***") it made me want to gouge my eyes out.
i really liked Shannon at first but in this last book she was incredibly selfish and lacked empathy completely. you made a very pregnant woman walk through what is essentially the woods at night and then got mad when she was taking too long? i wanted to punch her. all of the women are entitled, pick-me, selfish people. however, as for the mmc's, i love a man who yearns. so i can look past them and their blind naivety.
this series also has so many spelling mistakes as well as sentences that just don't make sense. Sarah Spade was either drunk or high when she wrote this series (or at least the last few books of the series) and it shows.
i painfully worked my way through the last 4 books of this series just because i wanted to finish it and i don't like dnf-ing books/series. it was not worth it.
i am so glad to be done with this series and never every have to think of this painful time again
update: amazon flagged this as hate speech (and yea, what about it?) so i had to take out some important bits. however, just in case my point wasn't clear - this series sucks
