Whew, let me tell you, I almost didn’t finish this one, and now I’m so glad I powered through. Rugger had me teetering on the edge of a DNF, and I was mad about it because I’m such a big fan of Grey Huffington. The beginning felt choppy, the sentences didn’t flow, and I couldn’t vibe with Rugger as a character at all. I was sitting there wondering if it was supposed to read like that or if I was just missing something.
But then I hit the 40% mark, and things started to shift. It gave me Mr. and Mrs. Smith vibes—sharp, action-packed, and fiery in all the right ways. That was the spark I needed, and I finally felt like the story found its groove.
However, I’ll admit, I wanted less of Rugger’s siblings constantly popping in and more of just Rugger and Psalm’s dynamic. The side convos Rugger had with her sisters? Cute, but distracting. I came here for the main event: Rugger and Psalm’s love story.
And let’s talk about that ending—because WOW, that’s where this book shined. It took until a certain scene (over 80% in!) for me to feel truly connected, but once I did, I couldn’t put it down. I didn’t love Rugger’s character most of the way through, but by the end, I got her. She and Psalm? They needed each other in ways that were raw, unfiltered, and perfectly imperfect.
Even with its heavy, choppy style, I couldn’t help but wonder if the writing was meant to mirror Rugger and Psalm’s rough edges and jagged journey. Chemistry came through strong (as always, patriarch vibes for his siblings, am I right?), but man, if I had to hear him say "baby" one more time, I might’ve screamed.
Bottom line: the start was tough, but the payoff was worth it. The last few chapters? Chef’s kiss. I wish I could spill all the tea, but spoilers are sacred. Just know that if you stick with it, the ending will make you feel all the feelings. ❤️
