This was my first book in the Women of War series, and it won’t be my last. While I knew little about Lagertha before, my fascination with Vikings drew me to this short but insightful read.
At just 44 pages, the book is concise yet packed with information about Lagertha’s journey, her role as a Shield-maiden, and her legacy as a feminist icon. The style is engaging and accessible, though at times it feels repetitive and leans toward a subjective article rather than a thorough exploration.
A standout is Chapter 2, which briefly examines the historical basis for warrior women and questions the existence of Shield-maidens like Lagertha. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the intersection of myth and history.
While the book is a great introduction to Lagertha and Viking war culture, more examples and deeper analysis would have enhanced the narrative. Despite its brevity, it’s a solid starting point for anyone intrigued by Viking history or legendary female warriors.

We learn about Lagertha from Book 9 of an important source of Danish history, “Gesta Danorum”. There are 16 books in the collection; but Book 9 gives a vivid account of Lagertha’s life & deeds. This is a fascinating read detailing Lagertha’s story, & place in history. NB. The TV series “The Vikings”portrays Lagertha.
