This book SCREAMS Olivie Blake!
Told with her unique wit and signature morally grey characters, ‘Gifted and Talented’ is a compelling story of three siblings who, upon the death of their father, find themselves jostling with ruthless determination for the heir to a magical tech company’s fortune. It is a wonderfully dark, twisted tale full of privilege, power, and secrets.
Money is the family business…
Magic is the family curse…
From gifted kid to clinically depressed adult. As they gather to read their father’s final words, who will come out on top? 👀
Thayer Wren, CEO and founder of Wrenfare Magitech, is dead. Leaving behind an incredible legacy and three dysfunctional successors, the question arises: which of his three children will inherit the Wrenfare throne?
As they collect at the family mansion for the will reading, we take a deep dive into the ins and outs of this family’s vicious drama. With legal complications delaying the moment of revelation, the siblings (and their multitude of partners) are forced to confront their intricate, messy lives, and seek help from someone they betrayed in the past…
The eldest - Meredith is the head of her own company. The ever overarching, perfectionist daughter who is totally unhinged.
Middle child - Arthur is the second-youngest congressman ever, except he’s losing his re-election campaign. Not to mention his polyamorous entanglements.
The youngest - Eilidh, a former world-famous ballerina until a life-altering injury. Searching for validation, she is often underestimated.
All three are telepathically and electrokinetically gifted. But, who will their late father choose to reign the family throne?
The narrative is deeply character-driven, featuring these three unhinged protagonists who aren’t exactly likeable. However, over the course of the story, Blake grabs your attention, pulls you into their world, and somehow makes you actually care for these wacky individuals. Watching them interact honestly with each other was incredibly entertaining; we witness everything from raw emotion, to buried resentment, and dark humour. Moreover, Blake balanced out the siblings unappealing and unapologetic attitudes, with other key characters including Gillian, Yves, Lou, and a mysterious, yet very endearing character named ‘monster’.
My favourite thing that rings true in all of Blake’s writing is her exceptional use of structure and timing. She executes her novels with so much precision and intention. I love how she split this book up into different days of the week, and used an unknown, cynical, and highly sarcastic narrator. She just loves to play games with her readers; it’s a joy to be messed with 😂
I will admit, going into this book I was nervous about the length. However, once I got going that fear slipped away completely. The length served as a great benefit, creating space to build an intricate plot, build up sturdy backstories, and come to a satisfying conclusion.
Overall, I absolutely loved this read. It is definitely in the running for my favourite OB novel (I have read all her works) 👏🏽 I particularly enjoyed how she bridged the gap between this privileged, powerful family and a deep-set, meaningful message of redemption and the true meaning of family. Another story very well told…I’m ready for your next one Blake 🙇🏻♀️
