Folly: The Memoir of a Call Girl Saved by Grace

Kelsey had a secret. (Actually, she had several secrets.)

While most people in university were going on dates or hanging with friends between classes, Kelsey was unknowingly entering the underground world of sex work. Juggling the demands of being a college athlete while battling with depression and her own self-worth, Kelsey was enticed the first time she heard her college professor mutter the words “sugar baby.”

In search of money and attention, Kelsey found herself slowly entangled in an industry where she would inadvertently be groomed, ensnared, and ultimately, exploited. Moving to Texas after college, Kelsey scaled her business and began jet-setting around the world, clinging to the illusion that she was in control—that is, until an encounter with the Holy Spirit changed everything.

In Folly, Daniels paints an intricate portrait of her path into sex work and the difficult journey to untangle herself from the lure of an industry that had shaped her. In this unfiltered, witty and raw account of Kelsey’s time as an Escort, Folly showcases the dark subculture that exists behind the veil of luxury. This story is a testament to the power of God’s grace and mercy, and His ability to meet His children exactly where they are, regardless of setting or circumstance.

I've chosen not to rate this book, not because I think it's bad (it's not!), but there are some books that are so personal that a rating doesn't reflect the story. This is a personal piece of Kelsey's testimony, it's more valuable than a star rating, at least that's how I view it.

Folly is Kelsey’s story and testimony on how she walked away from working in the sex industry and turned her life to the Lord. Through her experiences, she shares what led her to this line of work, her perception of herself and those around her, what she went through in her childhood, and even the difficulties of walking away when she first found Christ. Kelsey Daniel is raw, honest, and vulnerable. Her story shows God's grace and redemption. I had the opportunity to listen to the audiobook, and it felt as if I was sitting with Kelsey as she intimately told me her story.

As a Christian, I commend Kelsey for being open to sharing her testimony; it’s not an easy topic to discuss and isn’t as openly talked about. When we turn our life to God, there shouldn’t be shame around our past. If we’ve turned our life to him and we seek forgiveness and walk away from that sin, he lovingly and graciously forgives us. Her story is a wonderful example of the true love and grace the Lord has for every single one of us. I’m so glad that Kelsey had certain people placed into her life and that she could grow in Christ. That’s the most important and beautiful part of her story.

There are moments in the story when the author speaks about God, or she prays when needing something while she continues to live the lifestyle. I think we all, Christian or not, have done that at some point in our walk. That’s a normal reaction, especially when you haven’t truly grown in your relationship with the Lord yet. When someone turns their life to Christ, that doesn’t automatically mean that their lifestyle choices suddenly disappear. Whether it’s a lifestyle in sex work or something like drinking, gossiping, stealing, or fabricating the truth, it takes time to actively choose God over our sin. We see this so often throughout Scripture. But, at a certain point, we have to put our trust in the fact that the Lord has an ultimate plan and follow him even when he doesn’t answer our prayers the way our human thoughts want/expect him to.

As a reader, I was left wanting to have just a little more depth in her faith and walk with Jesus. I wanted to know why. Why, even among the pain and hardship, and the easier option (to continue this line of work she's grown to know), was it important for her to fight against it and walk away and choose Jesus? Why should others who can relate do the same? It is discussed, I just would have loved to see this explored a little bit more.

This is not an easy book to read, and it’s not one I would recommend to just anyone due to the nature of the book and the way the content is presented. I think readers need to have a certain level of maturity and understand the nature of this memoir before they choose to read it.

I think this is a great book for those who do ministry work to have a deeper level of understanding of the reasons, thoughts, and experiences that contribute to someone working in this type of industry.

My heart goes out to anyone who can relate to any piece of Kelsey’s story. If you’re reading this, you are so loved, cherished, and adored by God.

Thank you so much, Kelsey, for both sharing your personal story and sending me an audiobook copy to listen to and review! I’m excited to see all that God has in store for you and where he will take you next!

Content considerations: discussion of sex work and details surrounding the industry/job, Moderate+ swearing with words semi-bleeped out, being exposed as a child to a man, sexual assault, drinking, abuse in a relationship detailed (mental, emotional, physical, sexual), mention of a threesome, trafficking, drugs, mention of sex toys and porn film/industry, loss of a friend, depression, eating disorder (bulimia), body image, self doubt/self worth, *please message me if you'd like more details*

Folly: The Memoir of a Call Girl Saved by Grace by Kelsey Daniels

In Folly, Kelsey Daniels offers a deeply personal Christian memoir about her journey from college athlete into the hidden world of sex work, beginning with being drawn in as a “sugar baby” and later working as an escort while battling depression, struggles with self‑worth, and the illusion of control that came with wealth and attention. As her life unfolds across cities and encounters, a pivotal spiritual awakening through the Holy Spirit becomes the catalyst for untangling herself from that world and seeking healing, identity, and purpose in her faith, turning a story of pain into one of transformation and grace. This narrative peels back layers of exploitation, shame, and resilience with candid honesty.

Even though parts of this memoir were at times hard to sit with emotionally, I was moved by Daniels’s willingness to be raw and vulnerable about her past and how her faith shaped her redemption. The candid voice made me feel like I was sitting with a friend sharing a long, complicated story of darkness and light, and it challenged me to think about worth, healing, and the ways we seek value in life. Folly does not shy away from hard truths, and for that honesty I found it compelling and thought‑provoking.

Rating: 4 out of 5, for its courage and heartfelt testimony.

I was pretty disappointed in the book. I was hoping to read more about the authors redemption. But mostly it was all about her depraved sex life from the time when she was a teen who did bizarre sex acts till later when she became a high priced prostitute. Her only time it seemed she would believe is when God would do something for hr to prove he was real, to me that is not faith. She kept leaving her life of prostitution and would just keep going back. With all I have read I am not sure if she is not back at it again to some degree.

I had such high hopes for this book and was so excited to have won a copy. But this isn't anything like the synopsis claims. The author gave more details about coworkers and grapefruit spoons rather than how she truly found God. She only spoke of him when she would pray for something she wanted and when things worked out in her favor. Continuing the lifestyle throughout.

Few books about a fall and redemption are as powerful and as honest as Daniels' book. It's raw, unapologetic, and hard to put down.

In this book, a young woman tells of her heart-wrenching journey from prostitution to salvation in Christ. Stuck in cycles of performative living as a daughter and athlete, in injurious people-pleasing in search of worth, and in a nightmare of sinful living, Kelsey comes face-to-face with her struggles of shame and feeling unworthy of love.

Her eloquent writing is riveting. This book is a much needed addition to the memoir genre, particularly in coming to faith stories and testimonies.

Though hard-to-stomach at times (as should be expected of such a memoir), I was drawn in as I read Kelsey’s journey to Christ and her struggles to fully quit and break ties with her former life, which mirrors all of our struggles with failing again in a certain sinful struggle or habit, even if far less encroaching than her own. Despite how different her experiences will be for most readers, the struggles of the human soul are all-too-familiar. Readers will encounter soul-searching moments to ask themselves why undesirable patterns are allowed to fester in their own lives.

Soul-Searching Highlights

“I checked my work email to lift my spirits. Running back to a world filled with individuals that embraced and adored me while seated in another that didn't seem to want to grant me membership or offer me admission.”

“I wasn't sure how many memories from my past I needed God to resurface to show me that He had always been saving my life, that even when I spited Him, He was still deploying His occasional angels.”

“. . . The secrecy of my past that continued to haunt me and leave me treading water in a sea of residual shame. I still had not dismantled my first core belief. I still sought the approval of others as I searched for belonging.”

I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway…

This is an incredible story of grace & strength. I enjoyed reading the personal story of resiliency. It was a little choppy & sometimes hard to follow an exact timeline, but still a great book of Hope & how no matter your past, God can save you & use you for his purpose & glory.

This is one of the most raw, and honest testimonies I’ve ever read or heard. I think it’s so brave to admit all of your sins to an audience with no idea how they will receive it.

I had the pleasure of being able to tell the author how much her memoir touched me and she was so kind to hear my words.
I started to wonder how I even happened upon Folly, who recommended it? Where did I see it? I landed on God’s will.
100% worth the read.
When I was younger, I carried this jaded perspective that God can hear everyone but me. I’ve gotten a better grasp on my faith and who I am, and I was actually baptized this year, which has been a meaningful journey for me. And I feel like reading Folly in the same year helped solidify that I’m not alone, and I will not let my shame or self-righteousness keep me from a relationship with Jesus.

I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway. It was immediately added to my Kindle, and I had just finished a book, so I started reading it right away. I was immediately drawn in to Kelsey's world. She wrote the story from a first person perspective and was unapologetically candid and honest about her experiences, how they shaped her and her path of discovering her true self. She highlighted people who had a major influence on her life, whether good or bad. he narrative was written in a way that was easy to read, and contained insight into how her past affected her, and when she figured it out. I enjoyed the narrative, and was glad she seemed to get her happy ending.

Kelsey’s memoir is raw, honest, and enlightening. Some parts of the book are difficult to read, but the way they are written allows you to absorb the story without feeling overwhelmed by the information.

This is my first time reading a novel in two sittings. Kelsey’s writing style is so good that I felt comfortable reading and exploring her journey. *This novel is even better in the audible format. Kelsey draws the listener in like they are right beside her all along the way. I feel she has held back to protect the reader from any trauma.

Kelsey’s book should be a Netflix story! It is that good. It’s a cautionary tale and a redemption story.

I was Kelsey’s college teammate, and reading Folly really opened my eyes. I had no idea what she was going through back then. This book showed me there’s always more to someone’s story than you realize. I admire her for sharing something so personal and raw and am proud of the path she’s on now. Highly recommend!

Riveting, down to earth. Made it hard to put down. I wanted to know what happened next. I appreciate how it was written in a way as to not hide the truth but to not give so much detail as to make it an uncomfortable read. Everything was explained in a tactful manner that left me feeling like I was listening to a friend and able to fully understand what was happening. I laughed, got angry, shed some tears. And at the end, my heart was full of hope and thankfulness for another sister finding her way home.

Thank you Kelsey.

4.5 rounded up.

I received this ebook as part of a goodreads giveaway, and wanted to come and leave my thoughts about the book.

Folly is both a fascinating look at how and why women enter the sex industry, as well as a heartbreaking story of the lies many women believe about themselves and their worth. The majority of the story focuses on how early experiences shaped and skewed the author's perception of herself, how that led her to the sex trade, and how she ended up in bondage to that lifestyle due to financial dependence, a lack of other work experience, and an addiction to the feelings of power and desirability that she felt through sex work. Gradually through people placed in her life and a growing relationship with God, the author recounts how she begins to see her own self-deception. As with any addiction recovery, it's a rocky road of slips and grueling work to change how she sees herself, how she thinks, and where she finds her worth. Considering the message alone, it's a heartbreaking, yet hopeful memoir.

In regards to literary criticism, the narrative is not always precisely sequential. I would find myself confused when the author would jump ahead a few steps, thinking, "Wait a minute ... How did she get here? She was just there. ... ?" (insert confused looks and flipping back to the last page to see what I missed, shrugs, and then moving on.) To be fair, she generally backed up to explain the leap after a bit, but it would leave me feeling as if I had missed something for several pages.

That aside, this story is one that I appreciated hearing even if, at times, I found myself frustrated with both the author and some of the people in the story. It challenged my sense of compassion and had me questioning just how well I love my neighbor and the world around me.
