Ellie’s mother walked out on her a few years ago, and she refuses to believe her mom won’t come back. To make matters worse, her dad is marrying another woman and her best friend Kyle dumped her for cheerleader Tiffany Sheldon. But when Ellie meets quirky Alexander and learns about his map, his quest, and his background, she finally discovers a way to heal.
Susan Oloier is the author of My Life as a Misfit, Fractured, Superstitions, Outcast, Haunted, and the screenplay Simple Fugitives. She is co-author of the Horror Street Series. She has been a columnist and writer for both regional and national publications, including The Daily Beast. Susan currently lives with her husband and two sons. When she's not writing, she loves to read, rock climb, and ride her bike.
Ellie’s life is in turmoil. Her mother left her and her father, but despite this she’s fiercely loyal. When her father plans to marry his girlfriend, Ellie’s hot at this betrayal. There are other losses, like when her best friend and crush, Kyle, distances himself for another girl. When she makes a new friend, Alexander, things start turning around. The voice is great and Ellie’s a delightful young lady. I like how she played off the other characters in this YA novel.
I have loved Susan Oloier's previous books so I expected to feel the same way about Superstitions and it didn't disappoint. As always, her characters are engaging and the story pulls the reader in from the beginning. I really enjoyed the use of the Arizona setting and legends, I love the Western US and this just added to the appeal of the novel. Another excellent book from Oloier!
This book was a little younger than most of the books that I read but that being said I throughly enjoyed it. It follows Lily/Ellie through her sophomore year of high school. She feels as though everyone has left her, first her mother and then her best friend Kyle, who she also has a crush on. Then one day she gets assigned the new kid as her lab partner and sees him looking at a map and thinks that they could be friends. They start to hang out and he trusts her with information and they start to build a friendship that is a little bit more than just friends. I thought that the story was very cute and there were parts where I did tear up. That being said there were also times when I thought that Ellie was very whiney, which I guess can be typical for a teenage girl. This was a fast read and I wanted everything to end up perfectly. The ended was a little open ended I thought, and I don't know how that made me feel, but I liked reading this and would recommend it.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review
Susan Oloier is a very talented writer. Her characters are well developed and emotionally deep, and her story lines are engaging and realistic. I immediately fell in love with the characters in Superstitions and related to their struggles and desires. I also loved how she pulled in the Arizona mountains/deserts and their legends, using them as characters in the story. I laughed and cried with Ellie (the main character) through the book. I look forward to her next book!
