At 30 years old, Murphie has everything she thinks she wants. A steady job, a handsome boyfriend, the best friend you could ask for, and her lovable dog. She isn’t ready for a minor inconvenience to be thrown her way. She is determined to make her relationship work and not get distracted by Gavin's thick arms, dimpled smile, and good heart; especially because she is his boss.
22-year-old Gavin is a senior in college with plans to attend veterinarian grad school in Scotland. And even though she has a boyfriend, he can't keep his eyes or thoughts off of Murphie—her flowing auburn hair and the freckles covering her nose and arms. He thinks she is the funniest and sexiest woman he’s ever met. She thinks he's too young.
Can Murphie keep Gavin in the friend zone when he is determined to become so much more?
I picked this newly published book up during the romance blast stuff your Kindle event in October. It definitely fit into my preference of a sweet, but sreamy fall vibes romance ( although the book stretched into winter as well).
1st person. Alternating pov.
Features some of my favorite tropes: ❤️ Friends to Lovers ❤️ Love Triangle 🔺️ ( No cheating though) ❤️ Plus size FMC ❤️ Small Town Romance
Murphie and Gavin are coworkers, Murphy technically is Gavins boss and they are about 8 years apart, 22 to 30. With Gavin being younger. Murphie is attracted to Gavin and he's smitten with her but she's in a relationship with Joel. Joel is distant with her and makes her feel insecure about her weight. Gavin on the other hand treats her like he worships the ground she walks on.
When Murphie knows that Gavin is moving to Scotland for grad school and a real relationship may not be possible. Will she risk it all to be with him? I suggest reading 📚 the book to find out.
I deducted a star because I was hoping for a little more drama. Especially between Joel and Murphie. However I definitely recommend that you pick up this book and watch out for the authors' future books.
I enjoyed this book, but there were a few things that bothered me a little. Anyway, here's what I really liked:
- The writing style. The author has the contemp romance writing style down! ...From writing in first person with the dual POVs, to throwing in funny side thoughts to make the characters relatable... It is very charming and is appropriate for the small-town setting of this story. - The setting. We need more realistic small town representation out here, ya feel me!?! I have read a lot of small town romances that are cute and fun to read, but I have a hard time connecting with the story because I know this place doesn't exist. This place is obv not real but feels real?????? - The representation portrayed by our FMC, Murphie. It is also refreshing to read something that highlights an issue that so many people have with PCOS. I'm sure there are other books out there that talk about it, but the insight the author gave on how it affected Murphie--mentally, physically, and with her relationships--was chef's kiss!
What I didn't like as much:
- I love me some friends-to-lovers trope, but I couldn't buy into Gavin and Murphie's version. I saw it as insta-love without knowing more about what, other than physical aspects, they liked about each other. I also didn't love how they were clearly into each other while Murphie was still dating Joel! There wasn't physical cheating, but mentally Murphie seemed too into Gavin while she was still occasionally doing the deed with Joel. I really wish that there was a clean break before anything happened with Gavin. It made me feel the ick with Gavin, even though Murphie was just as responsible, and I had a hard time cheering for them :/ - I wished there was more depth to the characters and overall plot. Occasionally, it seemed to barrel to the HEA, but I would have wanted to see more pining and angst because--despite the cheating line seeming somewhat blurred--there was the fact that both characters knew they couldn't really be together "together" till Joel was outta the picture. To that end, I wish that Joel's character was more developed. He sucked, but like idk if it was so bad that Murphie needed to mentally be with Gavin. Idk. That might be a "me" thing, but I also was bothered when Joel was like MURPHIE BE MY WIFE and then lashed out. I didn't feel like the lashing out was super consistent with his development at that point.
Overall, fun read...just a few things I would have wanted to see differently. Thanks so much to the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

This book was super cute. Murphie and Gavin had me grinning the entire time I just thought it was such a light hearted book! I’m so glad I was able to pick this book up from the free kindle day! I just might get the rest of this series, I’m so happy I was introduced to a new author. It was super fall coded without being cringey or over the top. It was short but I feel like it was very well rounded and didn’t leave anything out. I also loved that both main characters were developed really well even though I wish we had more history on the MMC. Also the inclusion of PCOS was so cool! I’ve never seen that in books and I’m glad this one represented it and normalized it. I feel like this book represented a lot of common issues we as women have, especially insecurities with our bodies. I honestly loved it, I do think it was a tad bit repetitive and cut short at the end, but I loved this book. I’m so happy they were able to get what they deserved in the end! I would recommend 100%
This was a wonderful read! Im so happy Murphie changed her life around. Gavin?! Oh my, Gavin sounds like just my type I'm almost jealous!! There was a scene that totally had me "Oh No!"-ing but thankfully, it wasn't what I thought LOL I recommend this book, 10/10, must read. I look forward to more!
I absolutely loved it! If you're looking for an age gap romance with the perfect banter, this book will have you smiling and kicking your feet! It's packed full of fall vibes, a tattooed MMC that falls first, and some spice!
I really loved this book! This book was a perfect fall book with a pinch of christmas at the end! It made me wish for fall to be here sooner!
While reading this book, I loved reading about Murphie and Gavin's love story and seeing how their feelings grew throughout the story. As a plus sized person myself, I loved reading a story with the main character being plus size and the love interest completely head over heels with all of her and didn't want to change anything about her! Gavin is such a sweetheart, and you can feel the love he feels for Murphie! Can't wait to read more by this author!
A cute self-published book with nice chemistry between the main characters. But it needs some editing. I don't get what's funny about the Christmas gift, did I miss something or was a scene cut before publishing?
This is my first time reading thos Author and I absolutely LOVED this book. It was a fast romance with a slow burn. You couldn't help but love the characters and I would definitely recommend this to others.
I liked how quick of a read this one was - short, fun chapters!
Not a huge fan of insta-love, which is what seemed to happen after Joel
I also felt like the FMC was almost childish - she knew what she wanted but wouldn’t go for it. If you’re not being treated right, go with someone who will
Read this for book club, and look forward to more by this author!
The book was easily bingable. The writing was good. This book portrayed the holidays really well. Spooky Season, Christmas, New years.
My main (personal) problem with the book is the "no cheating" there claims to be. I understand that it's not physically cheating, but it is emotionally cheating. Having graphic sexual fantasies about real men in your life that you work with when it's not your boyfriend is cheating to me (which is why I said (personal problem)). To some it may not be. And to each their own. I get she was already emotionally detached, but she could have just broke things off sooner. Instead of dragging it through the holidays. Even with said "no cheating" I did like the forbidden love, workplace romance.
A Minor Inconvenience is a cute Hallmark movie style book, with a fun fall feel.
Murphy and Gavin work together at the local mart, and their friendship has long turned to flirting and feelings have definitely developed. The problem is Murphy is in a relationship with someone else, and Gavin’s future plans may not involve their hometown.
This was an easy read, it has an innocent feel to it and I was almost shocked when I suddenly read a steamy scene. Everyone knows those usually don’t bother me, but I found them almost disruptive in this Hallmark movie world, especially when it was between Murphy and her boyfriend Joel when we know they’re not staying together.
Gavin is a nice guy, he’s good looking in the conventional way, with a man bun and a six pack and, oh of course, he’s studying to become a vet. Murphy is a quite a bit older and a bit curvy, with major insecurities when it comes to her body. She has been diagnosed with PCOS and is struggling severely with some of the side effects. While I personally understand, I have (a mild case of) PCOS myself, I found Murphy absolutely insufferable. She always, ALWAYS has something to complain about:
She hates her body, but gets mad when her boyfriend says to work out together.
She doesn’t think her boyfriend likes her anymore, but is hoping he proposes on their weekend getaway.
She is in a serious long term relationship, but lusts after her younger employee.
She constantly compares her boyfriend to said employee, while ignoring bf’s phone calls and texts and then wondering why the relationship falls apart.
The author made a point of mentioning that there is no direct cheating, but personally I would consider sex dreaming, hand holding, lusting after and having feelings for someone else definitely a form of cheating.
I am so annoyed by Murphy BUT truthfully, the scenery and general feel of the book was very cute!

Wow! Just wow! What an amazing debut novel by author Chelsea Jean. I just want to review it as READ IT NOW! Don’t think, don’t hesitate, order and read this book! This book has everything the literary world needs more of. Plus-size FMCs, chronic illness representation, and later in life characters! This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster, but one that when I finally got off, wanted to ride it again and again. Chelsea expertly shattered my heart, but pieced it back together by the end.
Murphie is unapologetically herself. She is an FMC I can see myself in. Her strength is amazing, her outlook on life amazing, she is just amazing. I have no doubt that this FMC made many women and men feel seen, really seen. When she meets our MMC, the attraction is evident, even if nothing happens immediately. I mean, she is kinda, sorta in a relationship when they meet, but it seems to be more about physical needs than anything else.
It was instant attraction for Gavin when he met Murphie. He seems to have a lot going on, but we don’t get the full scope of him as a characters. But he is still loveable, sees Murphie for who she is not what she looks like, and when they finally connect, the steam flows off the pages. He is not turned off by a plus size woman, who is also older. He makes her feel seen like never before and sparks something in side of her.
Chelsea outdid herself in this debut novel. The passion and heart she has for her characters is evident in the way she writes. I felt so many emotions while reading this book. She makes her characters feel real, as she does the small town they live in. Although it is fiction, this book swept me in and didn’t let go until the last page, if even then. A perfect cozy, fall read, with a hint of Christmas at the end. It is a shorter read as well, so I highly encourage you to read it!
As always, review any author notes before reading.
Tropes: 🔥 Plus-size FMC 🥵 Tattooed MMC 🔄 Reverse Age gap 😘 He falls first (+ hard) 👫 Dual POV 💼Workplace Romance 🩺Chronic Illness Representation
⭐️⭐️/5 if I’m being polite… If the next book I read says the word “juices” to describe a woman being turned on, my kindle might get smashed. This one wasn’t it for me. The whole plot was really easy to guess, annoying, and the ending gave us just about nothing.
🌶️🌶️/5 There’s this real 🔥 scene where he’s wanting her so bad that he’s gotta “take care of himself”. (If I’m being mean, read this then stop, it just goes downhill from there. Imagine how the rest will go, and you’re probably 95% accurate.)
What I liked👍: - quick read! A little less than 2 hours. - the name Murphie for the FMC reminded me of Interstellar. Cute and unique. - PCOS representation, gluten allergy rep, ADHD rep, plus size rep, plus a Taylor Swift reference - Gavin really noticed a lot of little things about Murphie and was there for her the whole time, even through the torture of hearing all about Joel
What I didn’t like👎: - Why is Murphie flirting with people when she’s in a relationship - Why is Murphie letting things go with Joel without a fight, like they just fade away and he gets away with everything - Why is Murphie with a man who fat shames her - Why is Murphie having sex dreams and fantasies about another man while she is STILL in a relationship - WHY ARE WE OK WITH EMOTIONAL CHEATING - W H Y does she know for sure she needs to break up with him on November 1st, but still buys him a Christmas present and invites him to her family Thanksgiving, only to dump him then. If you’re over in your head, why make it last ~25+ more days????? That’s evil? - Joel proposing and Murphie dumping him was so anti-climactic - Murphie goes and sleeps with Gavin the DAY she dumps Joel. 🍅🍅🍅🍅 boo cheater boo - Why the FFFFFfffffFff does it take Murphie’s parents being like “why can’t you go to Scotland with him?” For her to realize all of the problems were that easy to fix. You couldn’t think of that yourself? Really? Yeah you really “love him” so much if you can’t even think through the simplest of options (or dump your boyfriend for him as soon as you realize you had feelings but I digress) - go epilogue give us nothing !!

A nice change of pace from the dark romances. ******************** Tropes: Friends to lovers, small town, he falls first, cozy romance featuring plus size FMC ******************** Triggers: Negative self talk, micro-aggressions stemming from fatphobia (Joel,) adult language and spicy scenes, possible cheating ******************** Quote: “It’s just us, our bodies fitting perfectly together like puzzle pieces.” ******************** Synopsis: Set in a small town suburb of Minneapolis, Oakwood Falls is home to Gavin, early 20’s and a senior in college, and Murphie, a 30 year old assistant manager of a convenience store, where the two work together. He’s very openly attracted to her, but while she finds him attractive, she dismisses that attraction as just playful flirting. Plus, Murphie has dated Joel, a businessman based in the city, for nearly two years. Her life is full and her trajectory has been set. Or has it??
Gavin meets and starts dating Murphie’s younger sister Mavis. Through her friendship with Gavin, Murphie admits that she gave up her dream of being a writer for her relationship with the increasingly douchey Joel. But with Gavin’s goal of attending vet school in Scotland when he graduates college, and Joel proposing to Murphie, can the two find their way on the same path? Or will their timing be inconvenient? ******************** Notes: It was a mostly cute story, told in first person POV, but I couldn’t quite give it five stars. Murphie and Gavin hook up before she has broken up with Joel. And while she is pulling away from Joel, she is also still actively being intimate with him, so technically she is cheating. Otherwise, it’s a cozy little Hallmark style romance with spice.
The PCOS rep is handled well, as are Murphie’s internal body insecurities. If the cheating doesn’t bother you, I’d recommend this quick little read. ******************** Ratings: Movie rating R, overall 4/5, 3/5 romance, 0/5 violence, 2/5 spice. 5/5 for the adorable cover.
Goodreads really needs half star options. I’m giving this one 3 because I can’t leave it as 3.5. This is a cute story about an older woman and her super sweet, super cute younger coworker. She’s torn between her long-term boyfriend who has been distant lately and not treating her right, and the coworker who shows her appreciation and how special she is. I found the plot lacking some because the differences between the MMCs were so obviously dramatic and the dialogue with boyfriend was a bit over the top. This also played out how you would expect it to. There is no on page cheating, everyone is faithful. To that end….aside from “OMG he’s so hot and says pretty things to me.” There’s no play on the attraction Murphy and Gavin feel for one another and I wish there was more in there. Gavin is just enamored with her (and her butt) and she is just attracted to his physical beauty. The other issue I had with this book was repetitive doubt and back and forth in the MFCs internal dialogue as well as the overly drawn out descriptions of what everyone is doing, wearing and decorating with. That’s my personal preference though and I didn’t dock anything for overly descriptive rooms and outfits. The last thing that bugged me here was the overly formal writing. Even in conversation the author often skipped contractions and draw out sentences in overly correct grammar. I know many authors have taken to this form of writing but it always comes off stuffy to me and takes me out of the story, people just don’t talk like that anymore. I wouldn’t say this was a bad book, it really was cute. But I had a hard time finding the desire to read it because of the things listed above and probably wouldn’t read this author again.
⚠️ In my opinion, it falls under cheating trope...
FMC stayed with her boyfriend past the 75% mark. Yikes. He was a terrible human, fat phobic, but she still banged him 42% ish mark. Just for him to tell her she needs to get her weight under control afterward.
Every time Joel hurt her, she runs to Gavin(MMC) crying, and he comforts her. They even talked some bout her sex life with Joel.
A couple of months later, she brings him to Thanksgiving dinner, just to dump him when he proposes. She cries he eyes out, and then the next day, she seeks out Gavin and the bang alot. She guilt trips him into being fuck buddies because she wasnt ready for more. A couple weeks later, after lots of banging everywhere 🙄 he tells her he isn't going to scotland for school he loves and wants her. She, in turn, dumps him before Christmas because she doesn't wanna hold him back. Of course, she messes up, but he has to beg her to give him a chance. He sings to her one NYE, and they get back together.
The book was repetitive. I love that FMC had PCOS, but I dont know why the author felt the need to remind us so much. It was annoying. Also, there were too many time jumps, Example: 3 pages of writing ....time jumps 1 month....4 pages of writing....time jump 1 month... (each month had 1 interaction, and then time jumped). Sometimes, it wasn't even the MCs interacting.
Definitely falls under the cheating trope for me. "Hang out" dates with handholding and hugs... Cute texts back and forth...ignoring boyfriends text and calls(douche or not)....They had dinner watched movies, and he stayed the night so she wouldn't be alone (he slept on the couch). She had a sex dream about MMC. Brunches...

The writing was so horribly bad. This read as a 7th grade creative writing assignment.
The characters have no personality and they’re all one dimensional. There is no plot. The MC isn’t likeable and the LI isn’t swoon-worthy or even interesting, at all.
One of the reasons I picked this up was for the PCOS rep… was the rep in the room with us?? The only “rep” was her being gluten and dairy-free, that’s it. She might as well have had a gluten allergy and lactose intolerance. She mentions having PCOS, but she isn’t shown having PCOS. I know having this condition isn’t a person’s entire life and personality, but as a book that advertises it, I was expecting to see it more in the pages of this story. So that was pretty disappointing.
Ngl, I completely skimmed over the last 5-7 chapters because I was SO BORED. I even considered DNFing, but it’s so short I figured I might as well finish it.
And last but most certainly not least, this whole book falls under the CHEATING TROPE. She has a boyfriend up until very late in the book, and this whole time she’s emotionally cheating on him?? I would say going as far as physically cheating as well?? Joel is such a caricature. The author really went: “How can I make this character as despicable as possible as to justify the MC’s acts and excuse the fact that she cheats?” That’ll be a no from me.
Also, this book is supposed to be ‘seasonal’ and ‘fall-y’ and all that, but I didn’t get those vibes. It wasn’t cozy or seasonal or anything. Sure she mentions loving halloween, but the vibes weren’t there lol.
I want to like it more than I should, but I guess it kinda fell flat for me.
Synopsis Gavin and Murphy work together in a convenient store. Gavin and Murphy kinda like each other, but here's the deal: Murphy already has a boyfriend (that Gavin hates) and Murphy thinks Gavin is off-limit due to the age difference. Meanwhile, Gavin adores Murphy and willing to do anything for her, if only Murphy lets him.
What I like Fast paced, the whole story occurred for almost six month (+nine months counting the epilogue). Both characters were quick to realize things, meaning, no miscommunication long enough it made me suffer, and pretty balsy.
What I don't like In the beginning, they already worked together for I-dont-remember-how-long, so their attraction was still an insta-lust for me. Murphy's chapters were filled with her insecurity, not saying not understandable, but repetitive at times. And Gavin's were just indecision and or imagining about Murphy (Murphy also did that so).
Final thoughts Debating whether to give it 2.5 or 3.5, but then settled for 3 stars. It was a quick read and pretty nice overall, just don't expect much.
I’m not sure who I love more. Murphie, Gavin or this author for giving us this book! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 While I love me a good love story, I even more love real life stuff that I can relate to. Without sharing any major spoilers, Murphie is undoubtedly my soul sister. In facing life with chronic illness, to having a dog who is her best friend, to loving the ber’ months like her life depended on it, to being a plus size beauty I just LOVE her. I laughed, I cried, I read parts to my husband, my heart broke, I saw the world through the characters eyes and it all came full circle and I truly cannot WAIT to see what the next books will have in store for us. This was the perfect cozy Fall read and while I don’t buy many books anymore (hello public library 🫶🏽) I will certainly own every single one in this series because I will reread these over and over and over like I obsessively watch Gilmore Girls and Greys Anatomy for comfort 😆

For being Chelsea’s first book, she did awesome! Such a cute story that had me smiling/laughing multiple times.
Loved Gavin’s character. So nice to see a genuine male main character. Especially one that has tattoos, long hair, and is attracted to “bigger” women.
As for Murphie, it was so refreshing to read a book where the MC has PCOS! I personally have never read a book with one who does. Plus being plus size too…uhm yes! Also hard to find.
Being somewhat from the area this book is inspired from made reading it even more fun! The plot was realistic. Nothing felt “out of pocket”. And somehow I never guessed the little twist in the middle. Oh and amen for the short chapters.
Overall, an easy read with a cutesy feel and a little bit of spice. Nothing dramatic or over the top. But a good subtle in-between palette cleanser.
This was a cute read, very short, but pretty much as expected. I read it in one sitting. It was enjoyable but nothing super original or exciting. Characters could have been a bit more fleshed out.
I did like the main character having PCOS and discussing her issues with that, although I felt it could have been explored in a lot more interesting detail. The main character never talks to her first boyfriend (Joel) in explicit details about it (as far as the reader knows). I think that was fairly lacking, particularly as it relates to wanting to have kids and other issues related to PCOS. The main character's reluctance to follow her own dreams is based on her setting aside her dreams for Joel, but again it was a lot of telling but not showing. It felt like the most interesting part of her life had happened pre-book.
Overall, a cute read though.

this was a quick & cute lil fall read & i thoroughly enjoyed it. gavin gives off major golden retriever energy & it’s so sweet. i love how he took his time with murphy, enjoying every moment with her, listening to what she had to say. her boyfriend was a complete & utter jerk & i did not like him & when he dropped that MAJOR bomb on murphy?! my jaw dropped. i was flabbergasted. i loved the energy that gavin & murphy had around each other & when she FINALLY knew she had feelings for him, it was perfect. it was definitely an insta-love moment when she knew how she felt & i loved that for her bc she was going through so much with her boyfriend, she deserved some happiness. someone who made her feel great about herself. someone who didn’t put her down. we love men like that. everyone deserves that. pls give this book a shot! it’s so cute & cozy!
Wow! This book will give you all the feels. Love, anger, resentment, passion, heartache, and feeling of self worth!
Murphie can be related to on so many levels. As someone who struggles with PCOS and body issues, you can feel all her emotions when reading her story. She is going through changes and just wants to be loved for her and not be self conscious. And she finds that in Gavin. Despite their age difference, he sees her for who Murph really is, a beautiful, strong woman who just deserves to be loved.. As long as Joel gets out of the way.
I love the way Murphie finds herself and her self worth with Gavin’s help even though it’s hard to see. They can’t fight feelings anymore and she stands up to Joel and realizes she loves Gavin.

3.75✨ rounded up! First I want to thank Chelsea for a gifted copy of her book after entering a giveaway on Instagram, what a lovely surprise!
This book follows Murphie and Gavin in a sweet he falls first, age gap, workplace romance. Gavin is easily one of the sexiest MMC’s I have read in a while. Murphie comes across so sweet, but has a fiery side to her. Overall it was an incredible debut novel with a really endearing love story.
I think the only reason it didn’t get 5 stars from me was it sometimes felt rushed or chapters came to an abrupt end. However, that can happen when you’re working with just under 220 pages of story.
Absolutely loved this Wisconsin author with references to my home states (MN and WI)! Excited to see how her work continues to evolve in book two!
