Wow, wow, wow.

Wow, wow, wow. I love books that make me say, "I had no idea about this," and with Richard the Lionheart, I found myself saying that every ten pages. This book reveals fascinating facts about the life of one of the most famous medieval kings.

I enjoyed learning about the intriguing personalities of his parents, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II. I was surprised to discover that he married and was crowned in Cyprus, that he didn’t speak English, that he was held captive near Vienna, and that he spent a surprisingly short time in England during his reign.

The book can be occasionally overly complex, but the author did an excellent job with the sources and connected historical contexts with interesting details for modern readers, earning an extra star from me.

Fun Fact: The ransom for Richard was an astronomical sum: 100,000 German marks, equivalent to 23,380 kg of silver. The entire kingdom had to contribute to gathering this amount. I can't help but wonder how many kilograms of silver we would be willing to collect for the current head of our country?
