Jump Start : GT Racing Romance

Rate this book
Journalist Harper Allenwright is assigned a ‘day in the life’ piece and sent on a week-long visit to the Echidna Racing garage. There, she meets the rising star of GT racing, Thomas Henry-Jackson.
Harper and Thomas have an understanding—they don’t like each other. Thomas despises the media, and Harper is not a fan of Thomas’s rude and dismissive attitude. While Harper tries her best to extract blood from the stone that is Thomas, she quickly works out it is not worth her time.

Together, they’re thrown into the exciting world of the Australian GT Championship and forced to get along, whether they want to or not. He’s scared off several journalists before, but this one is different.
All bets are off once they develop a tentative friendship and finally admit their attraction to one another. As their arguments turn into flirty banter, their walls slowly start to crumble, leaving them both feeling vulnerable and open to trusting each other.

Can Harper trust that Thomas is serious about their blossoming relationship?

Will Thomas be able to sort through his trauma and insecurities and truly let Harper in?

I was absolutely thrilled to be chosen as an ARC reader to give an honest review for one of the cosiest and softest romance books I've read... well, ever.

Jump Start by Kate Louise is one of those stories that you fall into like a big fluffy, warm towel after a hot bath. There is something so familiar in both the language and settings that as an Australian, you immediately relate to and can see the world Kate created so vividly.

Harper, our political turned motorsport journalist, is exactly what you want your FMC to be. She's sassy, smart, vulnerable, fiercely loyal to her family, and loves killer heels. Thomas, on the other hand, is slow to warm up, guarded, and a whole lot of arrogance, which for a GT driver is perfect, but for Harper, not so much! But of course, the sparks start to fly and things heat up between the two, and it's not long until Thomas is a puddle at Harper's feet.

Watching their burgeoning love unravel is sweet and uncomplicated and makes you believe that true love could be around any corner.

So, if you're looking for a spring read with spice sprinkled throughout, a hiccup of a first impression and writing that draws you in.  This is the next story you should check out.

Jump Start has:

🏁 Dislike to lovers
🏁 Motorsport Romance
🏁 He falls first
🏁 Banter & Sass
🏁 Soft and fluffy
🏁 Grumpy x Sunshine
🏁 Australian

Thank you so much to letsgetlit.pa for reaching out and the opportunity to read this beauty before it hits the shelves! And look out for the little cameo near the end - very cool!

Thank you to the author and let’s get lit pr for this ARC!

If you’re looking for a low angst romance with no 3rd act breakup, then check this one out in October! I’ve never read a GT racing romance before, so it gave some variety with all of the formula 1 romances!

Harper is a journalist tasked with interviewing Thomas. At first, Thomas treated Harper poorly because he can’t stand journalists. After her piece is published, he realizes that she wasn’t his enemy at all. He grovels and the two begin their romance!

There’s little spice and dual pov 🏁

Firstly I want to say thank you so much to Kate for the opportunity to receive Jump Start as an E-arc.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Jump Start. It was fast paced, and kept me intrigued the entire way through. Jump Start follows MFC Harper Allenwright who is a journalist. She is set the task of writing a piece about famous race car driver Thomas Henry-Jackson. She has to follow his everyday life for one whole week, getting to know the ins and outs of what his life really looks like.

When the pair first meet, Thomas is extremely standoffish and is actually quite rude to Harper. She doesn’t tolerate his sharpness with her and stands her own ground throughout the week. Thomas does not like the media due to his bad past experiences with them, so assumes the worst of Harper and treats her accordingly to his beliefs.

The rest of this review may contain spoilers.

Thomas at the beginning was so mean but I forgave him because I knew his thought process behind his words. Also not be giggling when he told Harper at the beginning that he didn’t need her life story just a simple yes or no. The way I would be so mad if this happened to be but I kind of found it funny. I also giggled at what Harper saved Thomas’ name in her phone as, it's the small things that make you laugh.

There was a lot of going back and forth between Thomas and Harper but it was amusing to watch their relationship develop. I love when a relationship at the beginning is just two people trying to be mean to one another, I don’t know there is just something about that trope that makes me eat it up!

Once Thomas realises his true feelings for Harper and puts aside his feelings about journalists, he knows that the way he treated her was quite wrong. He is determined to make it up to Harper. I think actually that Thomas was very full on with Harper and just couldn’t contain his excitement for their relationship to move forward. I was glad that Harper was able to communicate her feelings to him and made sure that their relationship developed at a pace that she was comfortable doing. Harper came across as being a very strong minded woman and I loved this for her.

My heart truly melted when Thomas dropped everything to go with Harper when she found out that her dad had had a heart attack. "𝙸𝚝'𝚜 𝚊𝚕𝚛𝚒𝚐𝚑𝚝. 𝙸'𝚖 𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎. 𝚈𝚘𝚞'𝚛𝚎 𝚗𝚘𝚝 𝚊𝚕𝚘𝚗𝚎". It is these types of gestures that show people's true emotional intentions. He was there for her no matter what happened. Harper deserved to be with something exactly like this.
When Thomas met Harper’s dad, it was a very high stress time for him. After coming back home after suffering from a heart attack, he pulls Thomas outside for a typical dad chat. I love when dads do this, I think it is so special that they look out for their daughters. The subtle threats about his and Harpers brothers jobs made me giggle.

Big thanks to the author for an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

"Jump Start" is a charming romance set against the backdrop of the fast-paced world of GT racing. Journalist Harper Allenwright, sent to cover rising racing star Thomas Henry-Jackson, finds herself butting heads with the broody driver. Their initial interactions are full of friction—Thomas despises the media, and Harper is unimpressed by his cold attitude. But as they spend more time together, their tense dynamic evolves into flirty banter, leading to a sweet, slow-burn romance that feels natural and satisfying.

What sets "Jump Start" apart is the chemistry between its leads and the absence of a third-act breakup, making it a refreshingly low-angst read. Harper’s sassy, resilient personality complements Thomas’s broody nature, and their gradual emotional connection is both heartwarming and fun to watch unfold. Set in Australia, the story offers a unique setting that adds excitement and charm, and the found family trope brings warmth to the narrative. Perfect for fans of grumpy/sunshine romances, this book is an engaging, feel-good read.

Thank you Kate Louise & Let’s Get Lit PR for an arc copy in exchange for my honest review.

Kate Louise's “Jump Start” is a delightful foray into the world of motorsport and romance, featuring a compelling blend of high-speed thrills and heartfelt connection. The novel centers on the intriguing dynamic between Harper, a no-nonsense journalist, and Thomas, a rising star in the world of GT racing.

The story kicks off when Harper is assigned to spend a day shadowing Thomas at the Echidna Racing Garage. From the moment they meet, there's an electric tension between them. Thomas, with his brooding, guarded demeanor, is immediately drawn to Harper’s fierce independence and refusal to take any of his bravado at face value. This initial clash sets the stage for a romance that’s both passionate and fraught with challenges.

Thomas, accustomed to the superficial relationships that come with fame and media attention, finds himself genuinely captivated by Harper. Her straightforward, no-nonsense attitude contrasts sharply with his experiences of people seeking his spotlight for their gain. As Thomas strives to prove that his feelings for Harper are more than just a fleeting attraction, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery and growth.

Harper, on the other hand, is portrayed as a strong, family-oriented journalist who values authenticity over the glitz of fame. Her interactions with Thomas are characterized by a playful yet sarcastic banter that adds a refreshing layer to their budding relationship. The chemistry between them is palpable, making their journey from initial antagonism to deep affection engaging and relatable.

“Jump Start” shines in its depiction of the Australian setting, with characters that feel true to their environment. The dialogue and mannerisms add a layer of authenticity that grounds the romance in a real-world context. However, while Thomas is vividly developed with a clear backstory and personal struggles, Harper's character could have benefited from more depth. The narrative offers a solid look into Thomas’s world and his emotional landscape, but leaves Harper’s personal dimensions somewhat underexplored.

Overall, “Jump Start” is an entertaining read that combines the thrill of motorsport with a sweet, playful romance. It’s perfect for readers looking for a light-hearted yet engaging story with charming characters and a relatable love story. While a bit more insight into Harper's character would have enriched the experience, the novel succeeds in delivering a captivating and enjoyable narrative.

Harper is a journalist who has to spend a week with Thomas, the new up and coming GT3 race driver. With the week over and regrets showing, Thomas realises he actually likes Harper as she isn’t like the other women he usually meets. This is a fast burn romance and these two get things moving along very quickly, Family drama and lots of races all happen within this book. The two connect on such a deeper level and I love the witty banter they have with each other. Thomas finally opening up does make you forgive him for his behaviour at the beginning and overall this was a great read.

I’ve so enjoyed reading this book! I loved the realness of the relationship between Thomas and Harper. I loved that she said no the first time he asked her if she wanted to move in and for the set boundary set by Harper and how easy going and loving Thomas is towards her. I also enjoyed how they managed to get along even though they didn’t have a good first impression of one another.

When they got together at the point of the book when they did I was so nervous that there was going to be a breakup (which I tend to dislike) and when I completed the book, I never felt so appreciative for how the author wrote the two characters to stay together right the way through. The banter between the characters is what it I enjoyed the most between the characters.

I also love how Motorsport was integrated into the book. I liked how it was in depth of trying to explains the ins and outs of the sport. I enjoyed reading it and managing to understand without the constant in depth of it all.

Thank you Kate for allowing me to read the book before it’s released xoxo

ARC REVIEW
Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Spice:🌶/5

The rubber hits the road in this racing romance as things shift into high gear.

This book features a fantastic dislike to like story about racer Thomas and journalist Harper. Their tale is one of witty banter and passion. The spice level is low but not completely absent, leaving just enough to the imagination without crossing into the realm of explicit smut.

It was a pleasure to get an early peek in on this book. It had my interest until the finish line!

This is a true and honest review of an ARC received by the author.

This cute, easy to read book was light and refreshing after some of the heavier reads I've done lately.

The story follows Journalist Harper Allenwright, generally a political reporter, as she is given as assignment to follow obnoxious Thomas Henry-Jackson around for a week to write a piece for her work.

Following her time at Echidna Racing, a tentative friendship begins and their walls come down allowing love to grow.

I enjoyed the banter between the two MC's and picked up a few character references to Kate's previous book Side Stage. The character growth through the book was great as they both overcame personal issues to make their relationship work. And I love a HEA ❤️

The story appealed to me as I've spent a lot of time around fast cars through the years, been involved with a drag race team and have a husband with a passion for restoring old V8's.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU TO THE AUTHOR AND LOVE NOTES PR FOR GIVING ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW THIS BOOK AS AN ARC <3

I really appreciated the writing style and how well the text flows, it didn’t feel monotonous at all. I also really liked the fact that the whole thing happens in Australia, I’m pretty sure this is the very first book I read that it’s set there, which was super cool! But what I LOVED the most is the fact that there’s no 3rd act break up nor any of the miscommunication trope.

In terms of the characters I have mixed feelings. While I appreciate the fact that Harper took her time deciding whether she wanted go change jobs (and move in with Thomas btw) and it seems like her own decision, I didn’t really love how Thomas tries to change every single aspect of her life so quickly. I mean, new job? New house in the middle of nowhere when she’s clearly stated she’s a city girl? It felt a bit rushed and kinda like he didn’t really take her opinions and desires into account.

I’m super grateful there wasn’t an unplanned pregnancy (when she got sick I was convinced she was going to be pregnant and I was ready to DNF lol) and how sweet Thomas was with her when it happened.

I think this book is a solid 3 stars and I’d recommend it to any fan of hotheaded males that drive sport cars!

This book is a captivating read! The journey from adversaries to lovers has me hooked from the beginning. The author's vivid descriptions of the racing world ignited my passion for the sport, just as they did for Harper 🏁✨

Thomas is a swoon-worthy hero who stole my heart. I adored the way their chemistry developed, even as they initially clashed. The witty banter added a delightful touch to their relationship. Both characters have endearing family connections that make them even more relatable. This is a light yet engaging read, and I'm already looking forward to more from this talented author yaaaay! 💗

“It was almost like our relationship had a jump start, it tried to get going but stalled.”

I was invited by Lily of Let’s Get Lit PA to read an ARC of Jump Start and this was my first foray into motorsports romance, which I loved!

Jump Start is an amazingly sweet and cozy romance. I’ve never been to Australia (unfortunately), but the way Kate Louise writes the settings I felt like I’d lived there my entire life. I felt so at home with both the characters and places their story took them.

Harper is an independent and driven, feisty family woman. Thomas is a guarded, grumpy, and brooding career man who wants no part of Harper and her bubbly entrance into his job and life and their striking tension rises until they both realize they’re fighting something much different between themselves.
I thought their romance was sweet. Dislike to lovers with very low angst and a lot of equally fun and sweet moments. Thomas was a cinnamon roll in disguise and Harper had enough spice in her to give back what she got from him and then some, making for excellent banter.
I also enjoyed how much I learned about racing from this book. I’d never read anything like it and it was interesting to learn so much about such an intense sport! I can absolutely see how much your team can become family and I loved the found family aspect of the story as well.

Jump Start is a low angst, cozy motorsports romance that will absolutely draw you in and make you feel at home!
Thank you to Kate Louise and Lily at Let’s Get Lit PA for allowing me to read and review this ARC.

This book was such a fun read. It was the perfect palette cleanser in between fantasy reads!

I have never read a race car driver romance, but this was so cute. I enjoyed Thomas’s perspectives the most, I always love seeing the MMC falling and not afraid to admit it to the readers.

It was very fast paced and easy to get through. If you’re looking for something to read in between fantasy’s, this is the one for you 🏁

4.5 ⭐️

Thank you so much for choosing me to read this as an ARC.

This book is a cute, easy book to read. Harper is a journalist who was tasked to interview Thomas, Thomas is a racer.
Thomas treated Harper like rubbish because he dislikes journalists. But once she released his article, he realised that she wasn’t the enemy. One she was back at the office he realised that he is missing her and would like to get to know her better. He soon realises he has much forgiveness to ask for and hoping he can eventually convince Harper they should be together.
It has no third act breakup which a did enjoy. Oh and the book was set in Australia, so another plus 🙊

✨️ARC Book Review✨️
Jump Start - Kate Louise (262📖) (21st September - 22nd September) 4⭐️ 2🌶

Thank you so much to @katelouise and @letsgetlit for reaching out to me to ARC this amazing book. I really appreciate the opportunity you gave me.

Jump Start is a quick, easy and lovable read full of banter, GT racing and the grumpy MMC completely melting for his FMC.

Harper Allenwright is a journalist that's been assigned a week in the life of story on the up and coming star Thomas Henry-Jackson. After their first week together, things start to heat up and you see that he isn't as much of a prick as he first seemed. He also shouldn't hurt the girl with an ex-army father and 2 brothers in the navy😅.

This book took me a little bit to get into as I knew absolutely nothing about racing of any kind, but I loved the concept and the overall story so much. Their relationship is exceptionally cute that I found it hard to put down. I was expecting a little more for the epilogue, but no complaints from me.

You should definitely get your hands on this beauty on 19th October for it's release!!

Easy to read sports racing romance in dual POV. I enjoyed the story and the banter between Harper (Harps) and Thomas. Harper, a journalist goes to the Echidna Racing garage and spends time with Thomas writing a piece on him and the sport he loves. Thomas is disrespectful of Harper’s career and makes it known how much he dislikes journalists. Once the story is complete and Harper has gone back to the office Thomas decides that he misses her and would really like to get to know her better. He has much forgiveness to ask for and eventually convinces Harper that they should be together. It is a sweet story and there is no third act breakup which I quite enjoyed. I really loved that the setting was in Australia and there were places in the book that I visit regularly, which made me smile every time I came across them.

As a girl that grew up watching motor racing, I had high expectations for this book. This book was everything I wanted in a racing story.

This was my first racing novel and I enjoyed it. Harper and Thomas are such a cute enemies to lovers story and the character progression made me smile.

As an Aussie, I loved the setting. It's so much easier to imagine a book when you know the places!

A motosport romance you say 💜😏
He’s a gt3 driver 💚😏
Well count me in 😌

This is such a fun read for those who love gt3 racing. I can feel Kate’s love of the motosport 🏁
She guided her readers in a way it’s not overwhelming but also engagingly in depth. I ended up watching a little bit of the Bathrust over the weekend as it made me curious (coming from an F1 girlie and the race is currently on a month break) 👀

Major points for all the aussie references 🐨
Literally laugh when Thomas actually did a sausage sizzle even though Harper already guessed sarcastically 😂
Absolutely love the dynamic of the Echidna team. The banter between Thomas and Harper is what I love the most. What can I say, I do love a good banter 😌

Strap your seatbelt on and pick up this book. You’re in for a ride💜

Thank you to the author for gifting me this eARC.

I ended up DNFing at about 37%. I liked the premise. I think the author was going for a dislike to lovers trope. I just couldn’t get behind the relationship progression of Harper and Thomas. I found it to be quick and disjointed from their initial meeting to their first date. I think adding some more in depth backstory to the why Thomas is the way he is toward journalists in the beginning and adding more angsty interactions before they fell into like would have greatly added to the story. I also didn’t feel like their conversations flowed well. I had trouble with the authors writing style. This premise was a great potential for a dislike to lovers trope but just didn’t hit the mark for me.

I love a dual pov and enjoyed the Australian references, however, the insta-love and pressure from the mmc to move so fast in the relationship (largely unrequited) didn’t appeal to me.
I also had major issues with the pacing overall and how events or experiences that spanned several days (within the first 9 chapters particularly) were just momentarily glanced over. For example, Harper’s initial week-long experience at the Echidna office didn’t seem to go into a lot of detail and therefore passed quite quickly, and her first visit to see family lacked substance as well—she had just arrived and was leaving again within the next paragraph. When Thomas visited her apartment, just as he declared his feelings, they shared a quick hug and then he randomly left? Scenes like these felt so unrealistic and rushed; I wanted the nitty gritty of what happened, conversations between characters (I think she said one or two sentences to one of her bothers the entire first trip home) and more of the character’s inner dialogue. As a result, it felt like there were large gaps in time or things missing.
It felt quite surface level and lighthearted, which will definitely appeal to some readers. For me, however, I was hoping for more depth to be able to connect to the characters and feel invested in their relationship journey.
If you like GT racing with grumpy x sunshine,
workplace romance, he falls first etc tropes + a bit of spice, this may be the perfect book for you though!

I decided to dnf this as I felt it wasn’t the book for me. Whilst it was portrayed as a racing sport romance, the week at this race track for Harper was very rushed over. I don’t know anything about racing, but there was opportunity for the author to delve into that like the cowboy romance books that are super popular at the moment.

I felt there was a lot of pacing issues, such as conversations with characters being rushed and interactions with no reasoning. I was really confused when Harper left her workplace upset and got an Uber, but I was under the impression she drove there. The supposed love/hate relationship at the beginning also felt really unrealistic and cringey.

There was just minor plot flaws that made it really difficult to keep moving forward, and as a result, I decided not to finish it. I think the author has potential and set good bones for a story, but the things I’ve mentioned held it back from being great.

Let me just say that I was waiting to get to this one on my list, and it didn't disappoint. Fun fact about me I love cars, always wanted to go (still do) to car races, and hope I can one day. This book had me wishing it would just keep going and the story not ending. And guess what? I did it in a day once again because I couldn't put it down. Base on Australia has me wishing I was there and was listening to them speak to each other. Thomas was absolutely boyfriend material, and I am so glad he met Harper. Two peas in a pot is all I'm going to say.
