It's no secret that I love Shari Low's “One” series of books. Well, they're not really a series they're just a set of books that have one in the title and they happen in a single day (or moment, or weekend, or holiday) As you can probably tell by the title this one takes place on New Year's Eve, or as they call it in Scotland "Hogmanay".
A lot happens in the 24 hours of this book…people facing their fears, new romances, old romances renewed and lots of drama from all the families. Every single character is likable...I cheered them on and wished that they’d get their happy ending. I loved that we saw some characters from the previous "One" books too.
This is an important New Year's Eve to everyone involved but all for different reasons. As in all of Shari Low’s books friendship and family feature prominently. Each character has their own chapter from their own point of view and that helped me feel like I knew them. Minnie was my favourite character in the book, I always looked forward to her chapters the most because she was so much like my own grandmother I adored her. The friendship between Ailish, Gwen and Rhonda really touched my heart. They were always there for each other and we're always brutally honest. They're the type of friends that kick you in the butt when you need it.
Some parts of this book were sad or made me angry but it was also very humorous at times… and I even felt scared for the characters sometimes. What an amazing feat for a book to make me feel lots of everything all at once.
Looking for an uplifting, yet sad and romantic book? Any of Shari Low’s books would be for you. In her books, you can feel the characters joy and pain and this one was such a lovely read with Shari Low’s trademark relatable characters.

“Every New Beginning Comes From Some Other Beginnings End” from the song “Closing Time” by Semisonic.
“New Year’s Eve. Or in Scotland-Hogmanay- the last day of the year, and one of enthusiastic celebrations and long held traditions-as one year ends and the new one begins.”
But, this could be the last year that Hogmanay will be celebrated at Gino’s Trattoria, a family business that never quite recovered after Covid. Dario has until midnight to secure new funds or sell to an Investment group in America.
Ailish’s 30 year marriage ended at Gino’s two years ago, when she caught her husband in a compromising position with his secretary out back. Will she finally have the courage to return or will she continue to hide and allow him to ruin one of her favorite traditions?
Ailish’s daughter, Emmy suspects that her boyfriend, Cormac might not be any more loyal to her than her Dad was to her mom.
And, Emmy’s grandmother, Minnie Ryan will be bringing a gift to Gino’s that she has waited all year to deliver.
A LOT will change in 24 hours-and the story unfolds in two hour increments starting with 8 a.m-10 a.m, until we reach midnight where we will begin the countdown to the New Year…
This may be one of the BEST Hogmanay celebrations that I have ever attended! As characters made their way to certain people and uncertain futures, my eyes welled up with tears.
This was my first Shari Low book, but now I understand why she is so popular in the UP LIT literary genre. She definitely writes likable characters who you can root for as they face adversity and overcome their challenges with hope, optimism and resilience. I have already downloaded “One Christmas Eve” and look forward to reading it as one of my seasonal selections this holiday season!

EXCERPT: Back in the late eighties, before they were even old enough to legally drink, seventeen-year-old junior hairdresser, Rhonda, would regale her and Gwen with all the gossip of every famous encounter while they got ready to go out on a Saturday night. If they managed to use their flashing smiles and fake IDs to get into a club, the night would be a win. If not, they'd get chips and head back to Rhonda's house to play a Simple Minds album and have a dance party in the bedroom, because her mum worked nights in a bar. How did they get from there to being three fifty-four-year-old women so quickly? And what would the young girls they were back then think of the women they'd become? Ailish shrugged off the realisation that seventeen-year-old Ailish would be massively disappointed with her current situation. All that optimism of youth had gone the same way as her pert buttocks, her blue eyeliner obsession and her conviction that one day she'd marry George Michael - right out of the window.

MY THOUGHTS: How can you not love a Shari Low book? They are the easiest books to get lost in; the characters all felt like old friends. And, indeed, some of these are old friends, appearing in Shari's previous books. But not to worry if you haven't read any of the previous books, because One Midnight With You is easily read as a stand-alone. Each book in this series focuses on a different character and, although the stories interconnect and the characters wander in and out of each book, the plot doesn't rely upon you having read the previous books.
The outstanding theme of Shari Low's books is friendship. She takes all the sh*t stuff that life regularly throws at us - death, divorce, cancer, infidelity - and balances them with love, romance, family and friendship.
Her characters are real people - me, you, the neighbor - and their trials and tribulations are just as real. And speaking of characters, I love that, in the front of this book, Shari has included a brief profile of each character. Let me introduce you to: Ailish Ryan, 54 - Newly divorced mum, primary school teacher, recently moved from her family home to a two-bedroom flat where she is supposed to be embracing single life. And she will - just as soon as she works up the motivation to get out of her comfy clothes and crocs. Eric Ryan, 58 - Ailish's ex-husband. Suave silver fox and director of a successful marketing company. Commonly known as the 'Adulterous Arse'.
I also love the way the story is told in two-hour increments, and we see what is happening to each of our characters in these time blocks as New Year's Eve day moves towards midnight and the countdown to a New Year. And believe me, A LOT happens in these twenty-four hours!
Shari Low writes with empathy, compassion and great wit. I laugh and cry in almost equal measure. If you're looking for a heartwarming uplifting read that will exercise all your emotions, look no further than Shari Low's One books. Once you've read one, you'll want to read them all.

THE AUTHOR: In real life, once upon a time she met a guy, got engaged after a week, and thirty-something years later she lives near Glasgow with the one they said would never last. Their children have now grown and scattered across the world, so she spends an inordinate amount of time on video calls and aeroplanes.
DISCLOSURE: Thank you to Boldwood Books via NetGalley for providing a digital ARC of One Midnight With You by Shari Low for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions.
Ailish Ryan was visiting her friend Gwen in hospital with their best friend, Rhonda. It was the one thing Ailish left her house for after her cheating husband left their thirty year marriage for a younger model. It was New Year's Eve and her final divorce papers had arrived that morning. Could she possibly join her friends for their annual Hogmanay celebration? When Gwen was allowed to come home, Ailish knew, for Gwen's sake, she could do it. The night at Gino's restaurant was always great fun; she hoped this new year was the same. Meanwhile Emma, Ailish's daughter, was having having heartache of her own...
Dario Moretti had taken over Gino's when his mother had died and his father, Gino, was grief stricken. Dario had worked in the family business in Scotland all of his working life, and Gino always arrived on Hogmanay to join in, talk to old friends, make new ones and count down to the bells. But Dario had major problems, ones he'd have to put on the table that night and he dreaded disappointing his father. As well, the elderly Minnie Ryan had a mission of her own that Hogmanay eve, one she hoped she could fulfil.
One Midnight With You is another exceptional read by Shari Low which I couldn't put down. I loved the characters (most of them anyway!) especially Minnie, and found myself having to put the book down to control my laughter at times. I've only recently discovered Shari Low and have enjoyed each and every book I've read of hers. Highly recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley & Boldwood Books for my digital ARC to read and review.
No one does these 24 hours stories better and this time it’s New Years Eve in Glasgow and 4 main characters have big decisions to make which, will as the midnight bells chime, change not only the year ahead but their futures
It is a heartwarming and feel gooder than good read and has laughter, tears, dilemma’s ,love, anxieties plus many emotions all wrapped up into a read you can lose yourself in
The focus is at GINO’s where they all meet and have done for years on NY’s Eve ( except last year, the reasons are explained ) and this year has more impetus than ever before, never has a gathering been so important to these people
I genuinely liked everyone in the book, some had made foolish errors ,who hasn’t? but all came with their hearts on their sleeves and wanting solutions
This authors books always grab me and keep me and make me happy, another beautiful read full of no agenda’s other than to give us,the readers a good time.
A story set on New Year’s Eve about a group of people who have life choices to make. Some unforgettable characters and how they cope with their decisions that will shape their future. Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
One Midnight With You is Shari Low’s newest release. This is my 5th book from her and I love her writing style. This is an uplifting book with many different characters you get to know through each chapter. Friendships , divorce, family, love .., this book has it all. Thanks to NetGalley for this early release in exchange for my honest review. To be published August 26, 2024.
I love Shari Low's books, and this is up there with the best. This is another book set over the course of 24 hours, and this time, it's Hogmanay in Scotland, and we follow 4 different characters who are dealing with some difficulty in their lives. The 24-hour setting is brilliant, how Low plans and executes the concept I'd something to behold! You care for all the characters, and that's just a testament to the author's writing. Loved it.
This author has quickly become a must read for me. Every one of her books has been really good. They all take place over the course of one day. This story centers over several people and where their life is on this day, New Year’s Eve. The book flows well as we get to know everyone. There’s joy and some sadness throughout this book. Definitely recommend, you won’t be able to put it down!
Well, it's safe to say I am all up in my feels today... Talk about timing of this book I was blown away a the fact this was the ONLY 1 I had left from Shari Low that I hadn't read when I decided yesterday I need a good book this eve. Had been saving this for a rainy day and thought why not end the year with my favourite author and most likely begin next year (today 2025) with same book.. So... As I've read many and had many in my library at one time, i have just 'randomly' selected them as I've gone along...
I had no idea what this was about at all all so you can imagine the sync i felt when it began.. On New Year or as we call it Hogmany, I was like ok this is definitely what I'm supposed to be listening to...
I am so sad to have finished all my shari low audiobooks (which of course I can and will resliten) but Shari & Helen just feel like family I know this sounds absolutely ridiculous but these books ALWAYS ALWAYS bring everything to the table for me. I am so sentimental that I literally cried for about 3/4 of this book, and yes, of course, as I predicted, there were various syncronicieties throughout this book!!
Love, laughs, tears, inspiration, friendships, family, reflection, introspection, understanding, compassion, kindness, sassy-ness, humour, wit, charm, and so so much more. My best friend and I both adore these books almost as much as we do each other, and I think it is because well we relate to so much that is covered by this author. I can't write my last review without mentioning the fact that Helen McAlpine is an absolute voice of an angel for these books specifically. I really can't imagine them any other way. Amazing teamwork.
I am so greatful to have had the pleasure of these in my life because they really have brought me comfort in times where I just needed a little peace & quiet or something for me I got it from these books that is the feeling I will miss its like coming home to yourself!!!
Sobbed so much for so many reasons and now just realised this is like a darn euoloy instead of a review of this book 📖 😳 🙈🤣 so um forgive me while I collect myself...
Another amazing piece of work by Shari Low with many characters all balancing different issues that all come together on New Year based mainly around the beautiful fanil6 run italian restaurant that began with fantastic community celebrations for Hogmany of food, drinks, music and building friends it all goes back to the 70s leads us right up till 2024 where the families all are intwined through those friendships... Work, marriages, and more. There is, of course, health, bereavement, family dynamics, lots of reminiscing and laughter, but most of all, there is love and memories being made with deep connections in true everlasting friendships that go on forever 💖
FRIENDSHIPS LAST LONG AFTER MIDNIGHT... !!! 🙏🏼💗😇✨️🥹😢😭
3.5⭐️ One Midnight With You is a really unique story told over 24hours from several different perspectives. There are about 15 characters whose lives are intertwined that we hear about.
I have read 2 of Shari Low’s other books in a similar format and enjoyed them. It’s remarkable what can happen in such a short amount of time, especially when you consider a group of people connected like this.
The story seems so straight forward and clear from the start but there are several twists that keep you turning the page.
I wouldn’t consider this a typical romance, I would have said more Women’s Fiction but it doesn’t have a lot of focus on relationships.
I adored the tradition of celebrating New Year’s or Hogmanay together and now want to create a tradition like that in my life. The friendships in this book were something so touching and special.
Oh Lordy, did this put me through the wringer of emotions! The car of characters was as wonderful, loveable and colourful as they always are in her books which always make me really invested in their stories! So much going on but that made it really hard to put down! I laughed, I ugly cried and loved every minute!
Shari Low and Helen McAlpine are where I seek solace, its odd to have a safe place with two people that you’ve never met and are never likely to, but they both bring such comfort to my life. I keep the books for times when I need them, and they genuinely never fail.
Set over the 24 hours of Hogmany (New year’s Eve) in Glasgow. You instantly connect with new characters, and of course reunite with some familiar faces that crossover from other novels, this is probably one of the things I love most, you can guarantee you meet an old friend among the pages. There are all the Shari trademarks of music references, movie references and of course fashion references along with sharp wit, and heart tugging moments, a little twist that I definitely seen coming but still stopped me in my tracks, nobody else does connecting with their reader quite like it. This is a New Year’s Eve full of love, heart, warmth, heartache, friends, family, framily and hellos and goodbyes!
The excitement of realising there is a new Shari Low book is right up there with Christmas morning for me. She never fails to amaze me with her books and how she keeps track of all the characters from past and present books, their relationships and previous events that have happened totally mystifies me. I like to imagine there has a massive board on a wall in which she has depicted just this.
At the risk of repeating myself (which I am probably repeating 🤣) this book is absolutely fantastic. As always I love meeting the new characters but love it when characters from previous books make an appearance, it’s like greeting an old friend.
Having grown up just outside Glasgow these books resonate with me even more and I love all the ‘Weegie-isms’.
Anyway, the review of the book itself. As with all her books, Shari includes a helpful wee list of the main characters you are going to meet along the way and a bit of background so you know who they are etc. Although once you start reading, you will soon get to grips with who is who.
So, among others, we meet: Ailish and her two best friends Gwen and Rhonda; Ailish’s daughter Emmy and her ex mother in law - Minnie; Minnie’s long-time friend Gino and his son Dario; Emmy’s boyfriend Cormac and her friends and colleagues Yvie and Keli; and more.
It’s New Years Eve (or Hogmanay as we prefer to call it) and all of the main characters have something going on in their lives - all of which will unfold over the course of the 24 hours setting of the book.
Ailish is recently divorced but has been living in a rut these last two years after her husband (Eric) left her for a younger model. She doesn’t know how to shake off the cloud she is under and start living again.
Emmy is loved up with her boyfriend Cormac but she feels that these past weeks something is a bit ‘off’ between them although she can’t put her finger on just what it is.
Minnie has a list of things she wants to achieve on this very special day and nothing is going to stop her doing so.
Dario has a big decision to make and he needs to do it before midnight. It’s going to affect his whole family and there will be a lot of unhappy people but he just doesn’t see any alternative.
One New Year’s Eve but a whole lot going on. I honestly can’t rate this book (or Author) highly enough - as always, Shari Low makes me laugh out loud and she makes me shed tears. Reading one of her books, I feel every emotion of the characters and share in their joy and/or pain. I also can’t put the book down once I start so everything else is put on hold while I grab a good few hours peace and quiet to immerse myself in the lives of these lovely characters.
If this is only your first time reading a Shari Low book, I am extremely jealous and urge you to make a start on her back catalogue. You will not be disappointed!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced read copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
We begin the book on New Year’s Eve in Scotland. The storyline is focussed around several of the characters, telling their different individual stories. We meet Ailish, her daughter Emmy and ex-mother in law Minnie. We also meet the family who run the local Italian restaurant, Gino’s Trattoria, and this restaurant is the centre of all the character’s storylines! They are all preparing to bring in the New Year in their own different ways, but life has other plans for them all.
I love this author’s books and I love how this, and the previous books, are all set over the course of 24 hours. This one follows their stories over New Years Eve in Glasgow. The author is so good at writing characters who are easy to relate to, and I loved Ailish and her family and friends. Their stories are all told in two hour blocks throughout the day and evening, and once started I couldn’t put the book down. Each of the characters have their own little individual story and you find yourself rooting for them so they all get their happy new year! It’s a story full of emotions, secrets and regrets, but there are also lots of family, friendships, fun, laughter, love and second chances throughout! None of the characters were unlikeable and every one of them had some redeeming qualities by the turn of the last page!
The book is lovely to read, and captures you right from the beginning. The pace of the story is good and their alternating stories are so wonderfully written and easy to follow. The timeframe of New Years Eve is perfect and I could imagine the fun, excitement and anticipation of the forthcoming New Year as I read. Whilst I read this book unseasonably in the middle of a summer heatwave, I didn’t even realise as I was so engrossed in the storyline! A real feel-good read! Would recommend!
One Midnight with you is another wonderful and at times emotional read by Shari Low. This book had me completely captivated right from the very beginning and the more I read the more I became engrossed with all the characters and what was going on with them all . One of the many things I love about this authors books is how the stories pull you right in from the very beginning . The way the characters are described by the end of this book I felt as if they were real life friends and I just love that in a book . There was something in this story that I had my suspicions about and when the reveal came I admit it had me in tears , even though I was kind of expecting it . I also want to mention that I love the way Shari Low introduces us to all the characters at the start of her books. Often if there are many characters I find myself having to search back through my kindle if I forget who a certain character is but with her books it’s so easy to check back . So to sum up I adored this book and highly recommend it
Was looking for something to be a bit of a thriller palate cleaner… don’t think this was it. Need a new romance / feel good author in my life but haven’t found it yet, Was a nice enough story but I didn’t gel with any of the characters that well. There were a few moments that were meant to be like twists / reveals but I saw them all coming a mile away and was just glad they were finally out when it happened, every one was so obviously signposted I am now not sure if they were meant to be twists or not. Maybe I’ve read too many thrillers with epic twists. Story is basically only told over one day (Hogmanay) which I found really slow moving. All and all an ok read but don’t think I’ve found my new easy read author sadly.
This was such a feel good read. A giant cast of characters and a twenty four hour period that changes all their lives.
I loved the friendships amongst the characters and the way the author moved between their stories. The ending was super sweet and I definitely recommend.
I read this several months ago when I was in the mood for some light chook-lit, and remember enjoying it, but have now completely forgotten the plot - which is why I don’t read this sort of thing very often. I remember likeable characters, endearing friendships and a nice take on 2nd chance romance.
I initially went into this expecting some magical realism (idk, got mislead by the description?), but what I got was the *most* realistic realism if I’ve ever read one. We get several storylines, intertwined, that depict our human life as is: with its times of joy and love balanced out by pain and grief.
At its core, this is a story about the resilience of the human spirit. Through every character, you see how people navigate their struggles while holding onto fleeting moments of happiness.
To me, the book’s main messages are about the importance of forgiveness, living authentically, and letting go of the past. Each storyline is a reminder that time waits for no one, and that we must live deliberately, without regret or hesitation.
Favorite quotes:
“Take a deep breath, slap a smile on, and let's do it."
“Some friendships last long after midnight."
“The time for forgiveness would come when it was right."
“I know it doesn't feel like it right now, but you'll survive this."
“It's a business. It's not life or death."
“It's not too late for you to start another life, one that makes you truly happy."
“Time moves on. And if you're so busy clutching on to the past, then all you do is destroy any chance for a happy future."
“Don't do anything because you feel obliged to. Or because it's easy. Or because he wants you."
“Maybe life is too short not to forgive someone you love when they make a mistake."
“There were so many possibilities, so much potential for heartache, so many things that could go wrong. But right now he wasn't going to think about any of them, because if he'd learned anything today, it was that the past didn't matter. Neither did what lay ahead. So, from now on, all he was going to worry about was today."
Sharis "One' series has quickly captured my heart and I jump at the chance to read them every time I see there's a new one available and this was no exception. This one takes place over the course of one Hogmanay which is the Scottish version of New Years Eve and is told from the POV of four characters that seem to be separate but we soon see how they are interconnected and how their lives will be forever changed. Ailish had major life events take place on Hogmanays of the past and now thirty years later she's even getting divorced on the same day so she has no intention of celebrating this year but her two best friends have other plans for her and take her out to Gino's Trattoria, the setting for celebration for Ailish and her family for decades to ring in the new year. We also meet Emmy, her daughter, who is in love, but is convinced, largely because she's seen what's happened in her parents marriage, that her boyfriend is cheating so she is trying to find the proof. And there's Minnie, the matriarch of the family, who unexpectedly turns up at the Hogmanay with a plan for them all. And Dario, Gino's son, and current manager of the restaurant, which is failing and leaving him faced with a tough decision. The chapters rotate through the characters in two hour segments and we get to see their lives unfold as they come together. come apart and reach life altering decisions. I can't wait for the next book! Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for this eArc in exchange for my review.
Taking place over the course of one Hogmanay - the Scottish equivalent of New Year’s Eve - and told from the perspective of four separate but interconnected characters, questions will be raised and answered, and lives will change.
Ailish Ryan has had important things happen in her life on Hogmanay. Falling in love, getting engaged…and, some thirty years later, quite literally discovering her cheating husband and then being served with divorce papers.
She has no intentions of celebrating he new year but is pulled out of her depression by her two best lifelong friends and gussied up to a night on the town.
All of this happening against the backdrop of Gino’s Trattoria, a local restaurant that Ailish and her family have been going round to for decades to ring in the new year.
Then there’s Emmy, her daughter who is in love but convinced, in large part due to her father’s philandering, that she’s being cheating on. Add in Minnie, the matriarch, who appears unexpectedly at Hogmanay with a plan. And Dario, Gino’s son and current manager of the family restaurant faced with a terrible decision.
And so, in rotating chapters, in two hour increments, we watch as these people come together, come apart, and come to decisions.
It’s a super quick read with engaging characters and interesting dilemmas. It reads like a light hearted family drama, an Ann Napolitano novel that takes the drama down a notch and adds some fluffier stuff.
Overall I enjoyed it though it was a bit too easy and predictable for me.
Thanks to @netgalley and @boldwood for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. This one comes out August 26, 2024.
I am not sure that there sufficient words to describe how amazing this book is and the sheer love and enjoyment that author Shari Low gives her readers through her work. As a long time fan I expected this to be an excellent read and one that would have been laughing and crying along with the wonderful characters that she tells her rapt audience about and this is indeed that; a wonderful story told over the day of New Years Eve, or Hogmanay.
Ailish, her daughter Emmy and mother in law Minnie are the main protagonists in this story and we learn throughout the book how important the date is to them all and how it’s significance has shaped their lives.
The writing is so beautiful and the characters take shape so well that I can picture them all and their relationships to each other, laughing and crying along with them as their stories unfold. There is a huge emphasis on friendship and family and their importance which is the theme running through the novel. I loved the book and was disappointed to reach the end, hoping to see more of the lives of the characters. Perhaps they will make another appearance, as the author has done with other characters so successfully in previous novels.
Huge thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
It is always the right time to read any book by the amazing Shari Low! I am thankful that I found her wonderful books and I especially love her storylines that are set in one brief, but drama-filled day, which is the case with her latest book, “One Midnight With You.” New Years Eve; a time for new beginnings, wishes and dreams for the coming year, and celebrations with the ones we love! All of our characters are approaching the New Year with questions, desires and hopefulness. Ailish wants to be happy again and perhaps a surprise makeover day with her besties would give her the courage to take back her life. Her daughter Emmy, a devoted nurse, has the perfect boyfriend, but can she really trust him? My favorite character is Minnie Ryan, Emmy’s grandmother and Ailish’s former mother-in-law. She has quite the story to tell and I found myself listening intently as she planned her perfect New Year’s Eve. What could she possibly have up her sleeve? I also love Ailish’s best friends Gwen and Rhonda, who have kind hearts and positive attitudes, who are both hoping for a happy and healthy New Year. They are always there for each other and I laughed like crazy as they reminisced about their wild younger days. This New Year’s Eve all of our characters confronted their fears, rejoiced in their decisions, and grasped hold of one another with love and tenderness. Another year behind them, but oh, what a wonderful year ahead!
Another fantastic read from Low, with the familiar formula of following several characters over one day. I have loved the different stories that this writer has put together with this theme and each one feels just as different as the last.
It is New Year’s Eve and there are four Glaswegian situations that we learn about. Each chapter is dedicated to the character in turn and I loved how the story is divided into hour segments, kind of creating a pressing need to get the dilemmas resolved before the year ends. I had very little idea how much of a big deal Hogmanay is in Scotland and appreciated how Low conveys the excitement and party atmosphere that develops well before the sun sets.
I liked how the focus characters were a range of ages because I think this broadens the story’s appeal to readers. Each of these characters are at a cross-roads in their life and it is full of emotion as well. Poor Emmy is convinced her boyfriend is having an affair because of his unnatural behaviour over the last few weeks and her worst fears are confirmed when he isn’t working the New Year’s shift he claims to. The breakdown of her parents’ marriage has clearly impacted Emmy with her own relationships and I enjoyed how Low then moves to Emmy’s mother, who is in the pit of despair after separating from her husband two years previous – Emmy’s father. For Minnie, Emmy’s grandmother, she is determined to help out a close friend and this takes her, and eventually all of the other characters, to Dario’s restaurant – the scene of many Hogmanay’s but one whose financial future is in serious doubt.
From relationship cracks to divorces, women finding themselves again and families feeling the post-pandemic strain, this book contains so many emotive elements. I did not foresee how much the main characters would all become entwined with each other and loved how the New Year countdown created such a tense read. My heart was in my mouth when midnight hit because it felt like all the characters had reached their own climax. Would they start the new year with happiness and hope?
Whilst the New Year’s Resolutions may have gone to dust by now, I really enjoyed the celebratory atmosphere of this book. I think it can be one that is read all year round because of how the story ends on such optimism – sometimes we need that in our own lives! I raced through this book because I felt so invested in these realistic characters, wanting them to have their own happy ever after that was so deserved.
With thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first book by Shari Low but it is apparently a part of a series.
One Midnight with You does have several characters and it is told in multiple points of view over the course of one New Year's Eve. At first it was tough to keep all the characters straight but then it became clearer. Almost all the characters are likeable (except for the cheating ex husband) and so you wanted to cheer for them to find happy outcomes.
I love a story that makes me laugh and cry. I laughed out loud several times as I was reading. Though the story was very predictable it was very sweet. I enjoyed the feel good nature of the story.
Overall this was a quick, sweet story full of humor and emotion. I would read other things by this author.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I wasn't expecting to love this as much as I did. The 4 main characters were all so different, but everything worked together perfectly. All the characters, even side ones, had their place. They were all well developed, and each one bought something to the story. It dealt with realistic, everyday issues, the dialogue was clever, flowed well, and was hilarious in parts. I had some real laugh out loads moments.
‘The Menopause version. Wearing well, a few hot flushes, and we’d kick the shit out of the bad guys if they catch us in a mood swing"
That being said, the serious issues were handled with care, and the humour broke it up.
Each character was relatable in some way, and I think that's what made it such a great read. It certainly left me with a warm, fuzzy , happy feeling inside, and we all need that .
One midnight with you follows Ailish, her daughter Emmy and her mother in law Minnie. Three generations of women all going through their own New Year’s Eve preparations.
Absolutely loved following these ladies and going on their journey in Shari’s world.
Dario is going through his own preparations and desperately trying to find a miracle on New Year’s Eve. I love how as ever worlds Collide in Shari’s world.
You will laugh and cry and sometimes at the same time but as always another fabulous read
What can happen in 24 hours? If you are author Shari Low, a lot. This book handles the emotions of love, hate, fear, jealousy, grief and hope, to name just a few, wonderfully. If you are looking for a realistic yet uplifting story about friends and family and how they intermingle to create a fulfilling life, this is a great option. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next - in my estimation, the mark of a good book.
