Jessica Gadziala is a USA Today bestselling author who lives in rural New Jersey with her parrots, dogs, and an ever-growing collection of houseplants. A lifelong dreamer, she’s been writing stories since childhood and published her first book in 2015. Welcome back to Shady Valley. This time, we are diving into Riff and Vienna’s tale.
Riff never really minded the extensive traveling before; he and his twin brother Raff were never the type to settle down.
I think Riff was just a bit worn out lately, and he was looking forward to some relaxation in Shady Valley... This would be his last trip for a while... he just didn’t know how long or why.
Personally, I found the stark contrast between these two men fascinating; one was like night, and the other like day.
Wow, we all know there’s all kinds of evil in this world, but Vienna’s story truly broke my heart.
Both Riff and Raff are aware of the dangers they face every time they meet a new buyer for their guns. They also understand the risks involved when they meet in secluded places...
So, I bet you can guess where this is headed. Riff and Raff got a new client, and naturally, they were meeting in the middle of nowhere when things went awry, and they got separated.
Raff was looking for shelter when he stumbled upon a woman chained by her ankle in the dead of winter, barely dressed...
Let’s just say this woman had endured severe trauma, and with the help of the henchman, she was able to heal slowly but surely. So when you hear the saying that it takes a village to raise a child, remember it also takes a village to heal a person, because I believe without the henchman, Vienna wouldn’t have healed as well as she did... Just my opinion, of course.
If you can handle a story that is both heart-wrenching and heartwarming all in one book, you’ve come to the right place.
"There was evil in the world, things outside of the control of everyone save the ones inflicting that pain. But I truly believed that the universe sent Riff not only to rescue me, but to show me the good still left in the world." Riff
This is the sixth book in this amazing series and Riff's story. One of the lesser-known members of the Shady Valley chapter.
The quiet one of the twins, who sometimes makes a chameleon-like appearance in the other books and always disappears on long road trips with his twin brother.
This story also finds its place first on one such trip. An encounter that not only changed Riff's life but also saved Vienna's life at the last possible second. It wasn't intentional. It was just a matter of course for Riff to help, and that's what makes him so cute, adorable, and amazing. He's not only the knight in white armor. He's without a doubt the absolute most amazing hero of all Jessica's books.
To understand my love for him, you need to read this book, of course, but let me just say that the world needs more men like him. Yes, he's still an outlaw biker, but that doesn't matter. Just read this book and you'll see.
This book deals with very difficult topics such as kidnapping, physical and sexual abuse, and also the long path of therapy and grieving afterward. (The abuse scenes are not part of this book.)
This is a very gripping, dramatic and heartbreaking story. But it's also a heartwarming and full of hope story. A story that ends with a beautiful HEA.
My reviews keep disappearing!!!!! It's stressing me out!!!
Finally, part one of the mysterious twins is taking the time to shine, and I was so here for it!.
Riff is the quiet, more introverted twin in comparison to his more extroverted, fun-loving brother. It was super interesting to see that and get to know more about them and their dynamic!. Riff is just so sweet and understanding. If there was a perfect person for Vienna, it truly was Riff. He took the time and was gentle and kind. He's funny and sexy but the heart on this man... I swooned.
Vienna, my sweet Vienna. This woman has been through the worst, and despite it all, is so freaking kind and sweet. It made me so mad for her. Her gentle soul, even traumatised, still gave others a chance without judgement. A legit angel.
Their story is heartbreaking and beautiful. They both had so much to overcome, but those building blocks to their forever are so freaking sweet I cannot!. They just fit so perfectly. Their chemistry was sweet, and the way they discovered each other with gently just had me sighing in perfection of all that is them.
As always, Jessie comes in with great side characters and lots of crazy antics. Super dysfunctional but hilarious shenanigans. A made family that shows all the love and support. Oh, and new animals every time because what's another pet to all these crazies.
I loved their story. It's not pretty, but it's raw, real, and utterly them. I can't wait for what is next!
Not for everyone because the damsel in distress trope is in full effect and the horrific suffering that the FMC goes through, while mostly off page, it does deal with the ramifications of that trauma on page. Having said that, the trauma is handled sensitively. If you know the JG formula for her bikers you know how this goes so this is more for fans than a place to start with her books.
I LOVED this. Riff is totally my current book boyfriend. He's sweet, patient, thoughtful, brave, and bad ass. And just oh so sweet...my heart is mush.
Riff finds Vienna starved and shackled in a cabin when a gun sale goes wrong happens. He frees her and takes her with him to safety. This is a slow burn with great chemistry between the two.
Vienna has gone through horrible trauma--and this book shows her healing and dealing with the after effects of said trauma with so much sensitivity and respect. We see her get stronger, mentally, physically, and emotionally. We see her take charge of her life again. This book takes place throughout a year (if we don't count the million epilogues). There are some skips in the timeline, like it jumps a good 3 months--which makes sense, but there were parts of those 3 months that I wanted to see. It's obvious that the author wanted Vienna's journey to be realistic--and realistically, it will take time (of course the amount of time varies per person) to heal and be able to have romantic and healthy sexual thoughts again. But throughout it Riff is there being patient, not pushing, not assuming, just there to hold her hand as she does the work to heal.
I love how the author has Vienna save herself (in more ways than one). Vienna is so strong, and my heart reaches out to her. If you're ok with reading about sexual trauma (it goes somewhat into detail and it doesn't linger on it or take a lot of space in the book but it IS there--but always done with respect) I recommend this book.
The reason I docked it a star is because all of the freaking epilogues. 3 weeks later (this one I can understand having). 6 months later--alright...really? 1 year later--seriously?? 20 years later--ok I no longer care at ALL. For those of you who, for some reason love epilogues, this will be your jam!
Also when does Raff (Riff's twin brother) get a book????? I want it!
California we are back! Always nice to be in Shady Valley with the Cali chapter of the Henchmen.
This book was a bit heavy, but not in a bad way, just a very real way. Kidnapping, human trafficking, and r@pe are a very real thing and an every day occurrence all over the world. If we don’t talk about these topics, we will never be able to learn how best to advocate for those victims.
Riff has always been the more serious twin, maybe because he takes his minutes older status seriously as the “elder” brother or just by default of personality traits so we knew Riff could handle some heavy. I’m not sure I was thinking locked up abused victim of kidnapping being starved in a shed kind of heavy but the topic was handled both with Jessica level excellence and sensitivity.
Vienna I feel was realistically broken and repaired from her experience. Her story was not horrible circumstances > meet man > man makes problems go away. She fought to gain back her mental and emotional health after her ordeal with some very real and very needed therapies.
We do get some light hearted scenes with Raff, some of the other members and the inner monologue of both characters so the book isn’t all trauma airing. If anything this book connected me deeper to some of the side characters and gave us a glimpse of the fun to come with the Irish Mafia family in town.
If you have experienced sexual abuse, or abuse it any form, please advocate for yourself. You matter. Your health matters. And no matter how grim the situation feels sometimes taking the first step toward help can bring about answers you weren’t able to see before.

I felt this story was written well with sensitivity considering the subject, and a satisfying end for Vienna. I just absolutely love Riff. He is so wonderful with Vienna. I want more of Raff and his story but I think we need more of all of them in California.
We take a detour to Shady Valley, a sister Henchmen chapter. Twin brother's Riff and Raff are working their way back to California after a run to Florida when they make a stop in Arkansas for a small arms sale. When they didn't count on was being double crossed and coming across a brutalized woman chained up in a shed.
Riff is the introverted twin and just couldn't walk away from the scared, skin and bones woman he found in the shed. She touched something in him, and he would do whatever it takes to protect this woman.
It was both hearth wrenching and heartwarming to see Vienna go from cowering behind Riff in the presence of other men to being able to fight her PTSD and be able to fight back on her own.
Been a minute since we had a story from this chapter of the Henchmen and as usual I love all these characters. And in true Jessica Gadziala the women of the Henchmen are total bad asses and give Vienna both the tools and training she needs to overcome her fears.
That niggling uncomfortable feeling you get when you are driving way too deep into the backwoods of Middle-of-Nowhereville to buy illegal guns from unknown sellers? Yeah, there is a reason for that. When Riff and Raff reach their destination, they are confronted with a quartet of extremely dubious hillbillies, all of their internal alarms start ringing, but by then it’s too late. When Riff’s efforts to hide from the murderous thieves leads him to a chained closed shed, he discovers a shackled and nearly-starved woman being held captive. And that is how he meets Vienna.
This book shows us that out of trauma, healing and trust can bloom between a trauma victim and her rescuer – with the help and love of an extended family of 1% bikers and their women. And pets. Brilliant!
FINALLY THE TWINS!! Roof was just the most cinnamon roll of all MC history.. probably. Adored him & Vienna could’ve been a wet noodle of trauma, but she is so much stronger than you’d expect!! Another stellar installation of the Shady Valley crew!!
I appreciate all the survival stories this author writes. It was really great watching the MFC recover from events that took place right before the story started. In a world with so much violence against women, it's always gratifying to be reminded that it can, many times, be survived.
I like this response to the comment people often make - but "you don't even know me" - the MFC says,
“You don’t even know me. I might be insufferable.”
“Dunno. Think I know enough. Don’t think twice about saving an animal in need. Look at books like they’re fucking magic. Don’t mind road trips. Didn’t get all grumbly when the snow put a kink in our plans. Gave up everything to take care of your gran. Know enough to say I want to be your friend, V.”
The MMC very elegantly cut through all the negative self worth talk.
Riff and Raff, the nomads of the Henchman MC. Always on the move and driving across the country. A life that can start to get tiring, especially where Riff is concerned. The guys are sent on a job in the middle of nowhere when things go wrong. Luckily, they always have a plan, but Riff had no idea what he'd find along the way..... a woman named Vienna. We see the tough journey that Vienna goes through in her recovery. A great story that shows the struggles of trauma and recovery with an amazing HEA. Now we just need Raffs story, he is the wild one of the 2!
I enjoyed this book so very much. In the woods running from some bad guys, Riff comes across an old building containing a shackled malnourished woman. He protects and frees her then they run through the woods fleeing the bad guys. He helps her cope with the memories and they work toward building their HEA. We don’t have to read through papers and pages of her receiving the mistreatment, instead we get to read how they work together with his MC brothers to overcome the trauma. They create a beautiful HEA. No cheating, no cliffhanger. Loved the ending and a glimpse of their world years after their meeting. Highly recommend. Enjoy.
First, I want to start by saying that every time I start a JG book I go in with the highest expectations. So I know that anything negative I got from it is from having set the bar so high.
In general, I LOVED the books on the Shady Valley Henchmen (Detroit and Crow might be my favorites) BUT… this one, just didn’t get to me at all. The plot felt like more of the same, and the backstories completely shallow. It felt like at the end of the book I barely knew Riff if even at all. And I am saying this because I remember books like Reign, Cash, Wolf… hell, even Huck, having such great fulfilling backstories and contexts.
I love you, JG, but come on, gives what we know you can give 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Just when I thought I had enough book boyfriends in my harem along came Riff and proved me wrong, Riff and Vienna’s story starts with Riff rescuing Vienna and taking her back to the clubhouse where he slowly helps her recovery and they fall in love and it’s a truly sweet and beautiful love story. We catch up with members of the club and their old ladies which is always awesome and I can’t wait to see what special kind of lady gets Raff’s heart❤️🖤
This story has Riff and Raff, the twins, going about Henchmen business, that goes wrong and they're separated . Riff stumbles across Vienna, starved, tied up and abused in a shed. It's one of those things that you know happens in real life, that you hope doesn't but one that Vienna is living through. The story builds beautifully from there. The author as always tackling a scary subject with sensitivity. Great story
Jessica Gadziala has hooked me on her books. They're often similar to one another in certain ways, but each brings enough change that they are almost always compelling. I really enjoyed the way the crisis was resolved in this one and really really liked how the characters interacted with each other. I'm going back to the beginning of Shady Valley to get reacquainted with everyone and will likely read this again at the end.
Excellent story. Vienna went through incredible abuse until she was rescued by Riff and his twin Raff. They had a very unusual start to their relationship but after getting back to the MC in Shady Valley, Vienna was welcomed with open arms by everyone and she began the healing process. But her previous life comes back to haunt her and Riff has to rescue her all over again.
They do have an HEA but it’s a long journey to get there.
Love!! This story has some dark elements, but mostly off-page. And I adore Riff, Raff, & Vienna! Riff rescues her, & their connection is special. I live the way he takes care of her! Also love that she gets to know Raff, as well, and he takes care of both her & Riff so Riff can focus. It's just a great read!
I love the friendships that build & strength Vienna gains & hint at Raff's story, too.
Damsel in distress and the knight in shining armor!!! It was just as Good with the MC twin. Trauma wasn't missed nor was the PTSD. I know it seems like spoiler alert, but its more like "you need to read this" because its such an endearing story and so gripping. Jessica knows how to keep readers wanting for more...
I always love Gadziala's books. I appreciate that she doesn't write sexual assault in detail, rather its done 'off screen'. This makes the books realistic without us having to carry details of violence.
This book was so fun. I love seeing more of Riff and Raff. The story was cute, quick, and sweet. I love how the mfc got to grow and gain a family. I can't wait for Raffs book.
Riff is definitely one of the top favorite men. Absolutely loved everything about the story. Heartbreaking and joyful. Can't wait for Raff and Coach to get their stories.
I love these books now Riff was so sweet. Slash n crpw will always be my fav (atleast out of the already written ones. ) but i never.knew how bad i needed need raffs and the Murphy brothers NOW. 😭😭😭
