When investigative journalist and recovering alcoholic, Finn Morrison, returns to Orkney after a long absence for his grandmother's funeral, his editor asks him to look into the mystery surrounding the death of a well-known author, Jeremy Powell, who lived there. The author had taken his dog for a walk along the cliffs then disappeared, his body washed up a few days later, the dog's body never found. As he explores the author's life, Finn comes across a link to another death, a murder in Cambridge of a local journalist, seemingly a case of mistaken identity. But is there more to it? Does it hold the secret of why Jeremy Powell died? Finn's investigation takes him into the writer's past and confronts him with further deaths and puts his own life at risk. Readers of Gordon's previous books have commented: "As a proud Glaswegian crime fiction lover, I always love when a new kid comes on the block and ‘A Rendezvous with Death’ has come kicking and screaming onto the scene! It was punchy, fun, and representative of our multicultural city but wasn't afraid to look at the seedier aspects of the city! I loved it!" "My wife and I read this book whilst sitting beside the pool on holiday. It was so good you just wanted to keep reading it ! It’s very well written, good characters and a decent plot to keep you engaged right from the first few pages. Looking forward to reading more by this author." "All too quickly I reached the end of ‘A Rendezvous With Death’. I found ‘A Rendezvous with Death’ to be a gripping and tense read, which certainly kept me guessing and which kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. ‘A Rendezvous With Death’ is well written. The author certainly knows how to grab the reader’s attention and draw them into what proves to be one hell of a story and then some. For me, the story hit the ground running and maintained a fast pace throughout. I loved the varied cast of characters in this book. As the story continues, the pace of the story and the level of tension gather momentum leading to a tense and dramatic conclusion. Reading ‘A Rendezvous With Death’ felt like being on a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way. I love the way in which Gordon makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action."

Fast moving with lots of incidents to keep the reader both gripped and wondering. It will appeal to those who like their whodunnits admixed with contemporary themes and news events. I finished the book in one five-hour session, such was my wish to know "where is this going and what happens next?" I was not disappointed.
It's just a shame the murder of the author's relative remains unsolved some 30 years later, or at the very least the reason for the same not having been revealed to his family.
