Day by day The Fever grew stronger, surging across boundaries in its relentless assault on humanity. The news pouring out across the airwaves turned more shocking by the hour. Hospitals had started closing their doors. The dead and dying littered the landscape.
The tiny group stranded on Portsmouth Island listened as the horror unfolded. They had no where to run, and no where to hide. The struggle to survive had taken on a new meaning. The Fever promised an eventual death. Something else had come to The Island though, something wicked and hungry.
As if life wasn’t complicated enough, a stranger arrived in an odd little boat and brought with him, both hope and fear. No one knew the man was sick. No one knew he had a fever.
To save him, William Hill would have to violate the travel ban. To save himself, he would have to face down an indescribable evil.
Published:19/07/2012 Author: Michael Stark Recommended for: fans of fantasy novels Edition: Kindle
I found this short novella on the Kindle Store for free and so I thought that I would give it a try.I love these kinds of books normally. When I was reading it, it did keep my attention and take my mind/imagination into the world it created, it was wel written by Michael Stark and I think it is a good book for people who likes fantasy books however I am not sure if I would have got it if it hadn't been free. It is part 3 of The Island series, there was a certain part in this one that I found to be rather predictive and it seemed more like the author couldnt be bothered to think of anything else so put the first thing he thought. Alot of people did really enjoy the series so it might just be me that didn't particularly enjoy it so I would suggest you give it a go and see what you think of it.
I flew through part three and four as I just had to know what happened. The author seems particularly skilled at keeping you hooked!
I still can't mark more than 3 stars as I feel the writing could be better. The only characters I have gotten to know in any depth is the main character and the old woman. I don't really know anything about the others and can rarely remember who is who. For an author who spent most of the first part filling us in on inconsequential details in William's past that surprises me, and makes me assume they'll all end up dying. 2 stars might be a bit harsh to mark him down for this but I figure if you take away the suspense, what are you left with? Not much really, and I think that 4 star books should be books you want to read again.
I think these books are perfect holiday/plane books as they're simple and gripping.
This is the best of the series so far. I think the author finally got into the groove - I couldn't put this one down. Things are getting tense, scary and just a tiny bit crazy. Really looking forward to the full story on what's happening.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review
This is the third novella in the series and things have gotten very very serious for the remaining humans. There have been new survivor's found, but they didn't want to join the main group. This will probably be a bad idea, and plants are put into place to try and save everyone or at least to give them a fighting chance.
The 3rd of an interesting series with well developed characters, fast moving action, and continued in the next book. I would recommend this series too anyone who enjoys series. Enjoy reading 2014
The radio continues to deliver news from the world and it just keeps getting worse. On the island, things are not so great, either.
Another small boat has arrived and with it the Captain and sole passenger, Gabriel. After a few days, he and William meet. While spending time sitting on the dock talking, William discovers Gabriel has a fever. Not The Fever. This spike in Gabriel's temp is the result of a horrible infection in his leg. Gabriel explains the nature of his wound to William who believes him. Unconditionally. It proves what the news is reporting in the 'strange and weird' department - giants and winged monsters preying on, eating people - is not strange or weird but actual news.
Elsie, having lived both on the island and in the nearby town, knows who she can and cannot trust on the mainland. It is obvious Gabriel needs more than they have to offer so Elsie makes a few calls on her cell phone, arranging for antibiotics. William just has to go across the sound, pick them up, return. He must avoid those patrolling the waterways for those violators of the travel ban. Oh, yeah, and the hideous beings that seem to own the night.
I'm ready for Part Four. Immediately. Too bad I cannot find my 'nook light'. Well, first thing tomorrow morning...
We were introduced and separated from new character Gabriel. I thought he would have been a best friend for William, but I knew we only had room for one grand man. :)
These kids with their whining is working my nerves, but maybe it is because it has been a rough three days this week with so much drama at work. so to read the kids not helping out around camp – they just sitting and waiting to die was tiring.
Even though we lost him, in addition we lost Elsie’s friend and his wife. Look at all the knowledge we gained from that trip, that test of loyalty, that test of faith. William couldn’t sit and watch Gabriel die, his strong morals are a big plus. These demons know of him, they want him and that makes me wonder why.
Is he like our John Carter in Terminator? He is the one who will keep their faith alive and keeping them physically alive.
So this is the last FREE book of this series… now we must buy the last two books to finish the series.

Things must be bad if a plague like virus is the least of your worries as a human.. Part three and the world is one huge ball of chaos with reports of demons and monsters eating their way through what is left of the human population. William has realised that the Fever is the least of his worries. Now it is about saving the small merry band of people stranded on that island. By the way, I can hear that goblin saying Wee-lee-um in the back of my mind and it just isn't pretty. The story has still got an edge and pull to it and yes enough to warrant buying the next part, despite my continual moan about breaking this great book into five parts. Let's find out how Daniel knows what he knows.
As Michael Stark broke this book into five pieces all the parts are short, but I whipped through Part 3 faster than Part 1 and Part 2 combined. The way Stark describes some of the situations is great, I could picture every scene perfectly. I thought his descriptions were good from the beginning, but it wasn't really until Part 3 that I really started to appreciate them. As for the plot, the supposed pandemic virus that is sweeping the globe is by this point only a secondary issue; Still concerning, but definitely not the main problem for our little group of survivors. I finished this part late enough at night that I should have gone to bed, but I ended up downloading Part 4 right away so I could keep reading.
I'm loath to give too much in the way of a spoilers but, the fever continues on it destructive path and they try to survive on the island.
With the arrival of a stranger and something evil the whole plot picked up a bit.
The missing 'C' formatting continued in this book. There was also an increase the in the Errors/Bug Bears. I'm not sure if this might be because the author was concentrating on picking up the pace , or if it had a different editing team?
As usual, a fuller post can be found on my Blog #444 in May 2014.
Loved book 1 Book 2 was getting me interested. Could not put this down. It reminds me of the Passage another book where a mystery disease takes over. However the demonic attacks in this are well written enough for the imagination to get going but not to much detail to give nightmares. started book 4 within minutes of finishing this. Have no idea if the final outcome for William Hill is going to be good or bad or what mystery is behind young Daniel. Highly recommend this series.
OMG this book is really starting to freak me out!! I am always the one hiding my eyes at scary movies and after this one I find I was trying to do the same with my Nook! If you like books that keep you wanting to turn the page to see what will happen next this is it. Read part one and two first this is part three. I'm off to read Part four. So far this has been free but after reading this book you will not have a problem with buying part four and finale for .99 cents each.
I just want to say I read the nook edition, that was free for parts 1,2 and 3. The creepy factor has finally gone up! The descriptions were great but the direction in which the book is going isn't keeping me interested anymore. Ok, so this fever, random monsters that know his name and they have something in common. Sorry but I didn't expect this from the book but I don't even feel the need to pay a dollar for the next book. Other than that, this is the creepiest in pt.1, 2 and 3.
The series is becoming a story of the human spirit to survive. Part three was the last of the free parts, and after reading the first three I felt the author has earned the money for the last two parts if not more money from me.
The book has taken some strange turns, but I have a feeling there is still a major twist coming.
I would recommend this book to anybody who likes the dystopian novels.
Part three of this story continues in the same vein with the world wide situation worsening the Island bound people are fighting to survive. This means breaking rules where necessary and working together to not only find food but to protect themselves from the monsters that appear intent on eating all in their way. How much of the fever is related to these monsters and how much is diversionary or mass-hallucinations will hopefully be revealed by the end of the series!
I am enjoying the story line. I read the first three books, and there are two more to finish. I intend to see the whole thing through. Book 3 gives us a littler more action than the first two books. Some of the characters still seem too insignificant to matter, but I can only imagine that as the plot continues to unravel they will have more definition and purpose. I can't wait to continue to see how it all plays out.
The Island: Part Three is even more terrifying than the first two books. The disease progresses at an even faster rate than before. Millions of people around the world become infected and die. Demons run around eating people and killing people. William helps a man named Gabriel who has been infected get medications.
Damn this is pretty good! I found myself using my spare time and time I couldn't spare but did anyway, reading books 1-3. I haven't done that in a long time. The action went up a notch in part 3 but I really like them all so far.I can read these in the middle of the night but the creepfest factor is still there.
The story covers five books [ I understand]. I found number 3 to be the best so far. The plot has slowly developed and the description of some of the horror scenes is excellent.I cannot wait to read the other two books of this series and to find out what happens to the characters that are left.
Definitely the best of the three parts read so far. It has picked up pace, and mutated from a virus-fighting tale to an alien battle along the lines of Stephen King's 'Dreamcatcher'. A few personal bugbears though, such as the medallion. Things like that leave a bad taste in my mouth.

There are 5 books and I have read them all. I think he is writing another called the Rock. Not sure though. Hope he is. and hopefully it will tell more of the story. It left me with a lot of unanswered questions. A good read though.
Ok, so the story has me hooked, I need to know the ending, but sadly feel like the author has stopped giving me whole characters like he did with book one. Lots of unexplained in this one, hoping the next book will at least provide some answers and more character building before the story ends.
Part 3 is by far the best yet. It was enough to convince me to read the last 2. Aside from a few more lengthy descriptive bits, I'm really enjoying the story, the characters, and the author's style. I hope the ending doesnt disappoint!
OK, I am not giving this series the justice it deserves, it is wonderful written and brings right on to the Island. I hit the last page and wanted more. I found the Last book here, got to find out what happens to the group. Will they be OK, will the food run out?
Ok the story is getting better. Still cant quite give it 4 stars yet. A bit disappointed it took 10 pages to detail getting ready to set sail yet only 2 about cutting a mans leg off. Have hopes that 4 and 5 make this a series worthy of the effort.
Liked it a little more than Part Two. Plot actually progressed quite a bit and there were some intense scenes, still not my favorite books ever. Not sure if I'm actually going to spend money on Part 4
