Ship Outta Luck: A Spicy Adventure Rom-Com

A sunken treasure ship, smugglers, and a hot guy who's stuck with me— what could go wrong?

I have only ever wanted one to find the Santu Espiritu, a five hundred year old Spanish treasure ship wrecked somewhere off the Texas Coast. When my grant funding evaporates, though, I'm risking more than my professional finding the treasure was my father’s lifelong wish, too. The father I thought was my best friend, until I'm in a hit and run with a hitman, and Dean, a swaggering stranger, commandeers my boat.

With me in it— and I find out there's a whole lot I didn't know about my dad.

According to Dean, my father wasn't a fishing guide, but a drug trafficker. Dean thinks I'm the key to finding a massive shipment of narcotics— me! A freaking history professor, whose idea of a getting lit involves eating cheese and crackers off the fancy plates on my couch.

I have no idea where the drugs are, though Mr. Ex-Marine Dean and the traffickers missed that memo, since they're still chasing us.

But when I realize my dad left a series of clues to a location smack dab in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, I assume the Santu Espiritu is wrecked out there. Dean thinks it’s the lost narcotics shipment. To find either, we'll have to work together, outwit the bad guys, and ignore our lust for more than Spanish gold.

A very special and enjoyable read to change up my chaotic TBR.

Short, simple story and a fun couple to follow. Every chapter something in their dialogue or thoughts made me laugh.

The plot was a bit predictable, but I was really looking for something to distract me and I didn't worry too much about that kind of thing. It was light, June and Dean got the ending they deserved <3

Rom com with Russian mobs and guns and blowing things up! Cute fun read. Definitely different than what I normally read...in a good way. It was light and fun with a small amount of spice. I actually got through this pretty quickly because of the action. Fun read!

- Kidnapping
- Car Wreck/ Explosions

- Drug Usage (mentioned)
- Parental Death
- Coping with Alcohol in 1 scene

Be right back while I SCREAM at how adorable and adrenaline-pumping this novel was. Brittany dives into her story right away and has you hook, line, and sinker obsessed with the characters and wondering what will happen next. It feels like a modern-day twist on Indiana Jones, but make Indiana Jones ... June. I'm talking about all the best parts of a treasure hunter story: suspense, bad guys, running/ fighting, and you guessed it: beautiful, sexy tension between the two main characters. 🥵 Your girl's jaw simply dropped throughout the whole thing, I even found myself leaning forward or even getting up to pace as I read because the adrenaline was PUMPING. The MMC is such a brute, but not in an annoyingly alpha-male way. (Don't worry he's still slightly alpha-male and it's hot.) He's competent and lets June be the badass main character that she is which leads me to her. June struggles throughout this book, but she pushes through. She's not winey and "pity me". She allows herself to feel those emotions (you go girlie pop), and then rallies. Talk about an inspirational badass to me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Overall, this book was such an exciting read that I read within 24 hours... I couldn't put it down! This needs to be taken by some sort of film company because this is your action-packed, comedic, romance story of the summer!

Thank you, LBC Reads for this ARC opportunity!

Did I just read the next BIG SUMMER READ? Yep!

If everyone doesn't go insane over this laugh out loud funny
summer romance novel, I might lose my mind. I freaking loved
Dean and June.

Ship Outta Luck takes us on the adventure of a summer as June
is thrown full-force into her dad's secret life.. while falling in love
with a ex-mil hottie. June was honestly a baddie. She was timid
but was determined to prove her place. And boy did she!

Their internal dialogue had me cracking up. The burn was slow but
once they stopped fighting their attraction, it was EXPLOSIVE.....
no but literally 🤣

I'm obsessed. And I want you all to be too. That's all. Go read it and
thank me later 🤭🤭

Action Packed and fun romance!

I’m on Brittany’s ARC Team 💎

June is a professor researching a lost ship. She loses her father and feels like she’s being watched. She meets Dean and everything is flipped upside down. She and Dean team up to find the ship while also fighting off a group that thinks she knows where their shipment is. If you liked the movie fool’s gold, then you’ll eat this up!

Check this out for a fun action packed romance with summer vibes!

I dont think I've read anything like this before, so it was nice and refreshing to read something different.

This was definitely a funny action rom-com

June recently lost her dad, and she is currently trying to find a ship wreck, that she's been studying for a long time with her father.

Dean is working with the DEA, and he is keeping an eye on June, as they suspect she is involved in a drug deal with the Russians.

Dean has been watching June so closely that he has become very attracted to her. The first time June meets Dean is hilarious. She is definitely a girl who says exactly what comes to mind at that moment. Being drunk doesn't help with that 😂

June's dad has taught her how to use a weapon, and June finds herself needing to use it. Dean loves her bravery and how smart she is.
I definitely wouldn't be as brave as her when it comes to sharks!!

Will she find her ship wreck? What's her involvement with the Russians? Will Dean get his girl?

You'll have to read it to find out 😂

Review:
A rip roaring helluva good time, that's what I had with this! Holy fudge this was fun! Totally channels the great action flicks of 80's/90's....this is like Romancing the Stone, Bird on a Wire and Speed with a bit of National Treasure and Freelance thrown in!

We have our academic firecracker, June, who has been on a quest to uncover a sunken Spanish ship filled with bullion and treasure. She shared this passion with her recently passed father, but all too soon she realizes that he may have had a tarnished past she never new about....one that involves Russian dr*g runners.

Dean, a veritable GI Joe Ken doll DEA agent come to life and a muscle shaped tree of testosterone, has been tailing June (thinking she knows about a hidden cache of "product") and soon she and his paths converge in a blaze of bullets when he comes to her rescue.

Their banter is laser sharp as she pleads she has no idea why she's caught up in what becomes her life as an action movie...on the run from bullet spraying Russians and chases on the ocean!

I attached myself to June and Dean like a barnacle to a ship's hull immediately. The dialog is so organic and rich with witty repartee. I just love how adorable her frustration is with him at times and then how her inner monolog goes on about how cute his muscled butt is as he walks away haha.

Most importantly, their connection moved perfectly in tandem with the plot. We have moments of reflection (a past incident that haunts her and Dean's past difficult relationship which has cast a shadow on his heart and career) and then bombastic sequences of adrenaline laced action!

This was the most fun, entertaining read I've had since I can remember and can't recommend enough! It made me truly nostalgic for those classic action movies I mentioned; full of adventure but with just as much heart and whip cracking humor!

Dr. June Legarde’s life work is dangerously close to going up in flames. After searching for the shipwreck of the Santu Espiritu for years and nearly a decade of charting currents for the past four centuries, she was recently rejected a grant to do a more extensive underwater exploration. Add in her father passing away three weeks ago, and the feeling of being followed for days, and June has hit a low. While attempting to drink away her problems, she meets Dean Evans who, unbeknownst to June, has been tracking her and her possible involvement in illegal drug trafficking. What follows is a story of hunting for treasure, run-ins with Russian smugglers and discoveries of truths about June’s life work, as well as the relationship between Dean and June.

This was almost like an action movie mixed with a romance. There was nonstop movement, threats at every turn and incredible tension between our two MCs. It was a fun adventure to take! I loved our MMCs devotion to our FMC, as well as her determination to protect him right back.

I recommend this for lovers of slow burn tension, characters on the run and twists and turns throughout the story.

Tropes in this story:

✨Cinnamon role ex-military MMC
✨On-the-run storyline
✨Touch her & perish
✨Hidden truths and discovery of pasts

I was lucky enough to receive as an ARC 🥰

Ship Outta Luck is an exhilarating, adventure-packed romance that masterfully combines the allure of sunken treasure with the high stakes of modern-day smuggling. This story is a thrilling ride from start to finish, filled with twists, danger, and unexpected romance.

June has one goal: to find the Santu Espiritu, a legendary Spanish treasure ship that sank off the Texas coast 500 years ago. Her quest takes a wild turn when she’s plunged into a hit-and-run, and Dean—a mysterious and swaggering stranger—commandeers her boat. Suddenly, June’s life is as much at risk as her career, especially when she learns that her father, whom she idolized, wasn’t just a fishing guide but also a drug trafficker.

Dean, an ex-Marine with his own agenda, believes June holds the key to finding a massive shipment of narcotics her father supposedly hid. As they dodge danger and decode clues, June and Dean must navigate their own sizzling chemistry. Their dynamic is electric, filled with tension and undeniable attraction, adding another layer of excitement to their perilous journey.

Kelley’s writing shines with sharp wit, vivid descriptions, and a fast-paced plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The story’s mix of historical intrigue and contemporary thriller elements makes for a compelling narrative that is hard to put down. June’s transformation from a dedicated history professor to a daring adventurer is both believable and inspiring, making her a heroine to root for.

Ship Outta Luck is perfect for fans of action-packed romances with a touch of humour and a lot of heart. It’s a high-seas treasure hunt that delivers on every front—adventure, suspense, and a romance that burns hotter than the Texas sun.

Thank you Brittany for allowing me to read this fantastic ARC!

What a fun read for summer! This book was an exciting adventure filled with lots of sizzling tension and plenty of comedic moments that had me giggling out loud.

June is such a badass in her own right, despite what most of the characters initially believe. She can take care of herself. And Dean is her perfect complement, an ex-marine with a troubled past and a wounded heart that's softly hoping to be mended by our lovely FMC.

Our MCs are driven by their passions: June by her desire to find the sunken ship she and her dad spent her whole life searching for, and Dean by his honorable intentions to save the world and spend the rest of his life cherishing a woman who has so easily coaxed his heart to open up again.

This story was refreshing and the paths it took to get to its end had me pleasantly surprised at how it navigated typically frustrating situations. Miscommunication? Not mishandled and overreactive, but taken reasonably and understandably. Third act breakup? Non-existent, since it was unnecessary for the plot. Love!!

I just so happened to be reading this while  on a boat in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, where this book takes place. Always fun to be in the same setting as your book. 😄

This is a fun summer read! It has a pace that keeps things going, so you can read it in one or two sittings. Pairs best with a margarita in-hand and sand between your toes.

Dean is your tall, dark, and handsome former military guy, and June is a sassy marine archeologist.

Things I enjoyed:
⚓️ Plot isn't your typical romcom scenario
⚓️ Banter, and characters who speak their mind
⚓️ The references to boat life and scuba diving
⚓️ Protective, cinnamon-roll MMC, paired with an intelligent FMC who can hold her own in a fight

🫢 Cursing, including F
🌶 🌶 Multiple steamy kissing scenes, one multi-page open door scene
⚠️  Abduction (off-page), parental death (off-page), v!olence, minimal gore

Thank you to the author for an early copy! I'm leaving this honest review voluntarily.

This book was so fun. I have never read an adventure romcom before (at least not that I can think of). This was intense, suspenseful, and action packed while being completely sweet and swoonworthy.

June is researching a shipwreck when Dean, an ex-Marine bursts into her life. He thinks June’s father was involved in drug smuggling and they end up on an adventure to find the truth. June is sweet, but super strong and not afraid to point a gun at people who threaten her safety. Dean is protective, thoughtful, and so hot.

There is a delicious slow burn romance, lots of banter, and a great story.

If you need an addictive summer read, this is it!!

Thanks to Brittany Kelley for the arc. All opinions are my own.

Tropes:
🌊Forced Promixity
🛥️Cinnamon Roll Hero
🌊Strangers to Lovers
🛥️Banter
🌊Academic Heroine
🛥️Touch her and die vibes
This book is adventure rom com gold.

Poor June’s just trying to catch a break. Her proposal for a grant to find the shipwreck of Santu Espiritu is denied, her bestie hits someone with her car and then laughs about it like she’s have a psychic break, and now the hot guy whose taking her home from the Mexican restaurant may be a stalker considering she never gave him her address but he pulls right on up to her house!

But good news Deans not a stalker, he’s a consultant working with the DEA to find a large shipment that’s gone missing. And the DEA thinks June’s recently departed father left her the clues and means to find it. June’s convinced the coordinates she finds will lead her to the Santu Espiritu, while Dean’s convinced it leads to the shipment.

These two not only have to fight off the Russians also vying for the shipment but their growing feelings for each other as well.

Ship outta luck was an exciting read, I was not only caught up in the budding of romance of June and Dean but also the excitement of finding out how the adventure ends and who’s going to be right.

Charlie is also unhinged in the best way and so funny I love her. I hope she gets a book because she’s too good of a character to stay a side character. Girl has series main character energy.

Reading the premise, I was expecting “Uncharted” meets “National Treasure” in terms of searching for a long-lost ship full of ancient treasure. However, this did not deliver. I felt like the plot focused more on the drug smuggling and Russian hitmen… which was not the vibe I was looking for. Also, I feel like they found this ship that’s been missing for 400+ years way too fast. There was no suspense… and 100 pages of nothing after-the-fact.

I also take issue with this being advertised as “spicy,” as the only sex scene happened over 80% of the way through the book. And it was literally not even a full chapter.

Was this cute? Sure.
Would I classify it as an adventure romcom? Yes.
But it left me very underwhelmed.

What to expect when reading Ship out of Luck;
-Strangers to Lovers
-Touch her and 💀
-Banter
-Forced Proximity

Your next RomCom/ Adventure book is here!

June, our FMC, is hilarious and I feel like would be me if I was in her situation in this book. She just wants a grant to help find a lost ship for her studies. Dean, our MMC, ex-marine who is on a mission to take down Russian smugglers. Well part of his job involves June and while getting shot at the tension between the two explodes!

This book was truly fun to read, between Junes act of trying not to cuss and the banter between the two, I was hooked. I loved the chemistry between them. She definitely kept him on his toes! And I would love to see what Dean would like like in real life, kind of curious😅

Fav Line: anytime he calls her Princess 🫠

This is thee perfect summer read!

I don’t think I have read a romcom with adventure! It was a really fun cute read, I really enjoyed this one.

June is sweet and caring and isn’t afraid to say what’s on her mind she also isn’t afraid to point a gun at people who try to hurt her.

Dean is an ex military who doesn’t trust easily only trusts his team.
He’s really reliable and overall a charming person (who wouldn’t fall for him?!)

June is researching a shipwreck when dean comes crash into her life. Thinking her dad was involved in drug smuggling they both work together to figure out the truth.

I loved all the banter & the slow burn romance it was such a great story!!!

This was an amazing summer read! It has all the elements you look for in a book you want to read at the beach while sipping cocktails. The romance is absolutely amazing, the plot kept you on the edge of your seat and the smut was very well balanced so it didn’t take over the plot! I also find it a very refreshing concept, it wasn’t like your standard happy beach read and I loved it!!

I will defenitely recommend this one to all my friends!

I received this book as an arc! What happens when you mix National Treasure and a little bit of Indiana Jones thrown in, then this is the perfect book for you. Told in a dual POV we follow our main characters June and Dean. June is a professor looking for a lost ship, Dean is ex marine who is watching June for her involvement with the Russians while looking for a shipment of drugs. Problems arise when June is shot at and Dean must try and keep her safe. Junes father leaves a map of sorts to help get her on the right track. Filled with banter, funny commentary, a FMC who tries not to cuss, action, gun fights, explosions, a hidden treasure, and some spice. What more could you ask for from a book. I felt like I was watching a movie, this wasn't heavy on the spice but definitely heavy on the plot both romantic and banter. The perfect combination of action and romcom.
Tropes: strangers to lovers, banter, one bed/ship, touch her and die, cinnamon roll hero, forced proximity, spice level 1.5, FMC that can take care of herself.

I received a copy of this for my honest review

This book gave National Treasure meets Rom Com and I loved it!!

Our FMC is trying to get a grant to help her recover a lost hundreds of year old ship in the Texas Gulf Coast. Unfortunately her university won't grant the funds. When her plan is to get drunk with a friend she keeps feeling like someone is watching. This triggers a chain of events to have her meet the MMC, a government contractor who has had her in his sights as a possible target to the location of drugs. She learns her late dad has been involved with Russian smugglers, and he learns she is not involved. Too bad she is still under suspicion by the Russians, so they try to get her for information. She and the MMC learn to trust each other, and maybe more, in order to work together and solve the mystery of the Santu Espiritu.

Ship Outta Luck was the perfect summer read: Adventure (check), Suspense (check), Romance (check), Spicey times (check)... Brittany has knocked another one out of the park! I got to read an e-ARC of this one, and will be purchasing a print copy the day it drops...
June has recently lost her dad, but has tracked down the shipwreck they've searched for in the Gulf of Mexico. As a professor at her South Texas university, she tries to get grant funding to officially find and unearth the wreckage, but fails... as she is nursing her loss at a local dive bar, she runs into Dean, an ex-Marine on the tail of a drug stash he thinks she's involved with. After an incident with a Russian hitman, they end up stuck on a boat in the middle of the Gulf together... Shenanigans ensue as they try to find the lost "shipment" before the bad guys... Such a romp with delightful banter, sizzling spice, and epic adventure. Highly recommend! Ship Outta Luck releases on July 25, 2024 - don't miss out on the best book of the summer!

When I heard about this story Brittany was writing I was so excited for this concept! It is so unique to any of the romance books I’ve seen and loosely based on one of my favorite action-adventure romcoms, Fools Gold.

This story was hilarious, while also being packed full of action, twists, and turns. June has spent her life looking for a ship wreck with her recently deceased father. Dean is an ex-marine who has been hired to find something else. This unlikely duo teams up and sparks fly. Read this if you love great banter, crazy action scenes, and an adorable HEA.

Thank you Brittany for the opportunity to read and review this story!

Ship Outta Luck by Brittany Kelley, June Legarde is a beautiful, intelligent and very determined young woman, she recently lost her father, and to honor her father's memory she is asking the Department of History and Archeology to help fund the research that will take her on a quest to discover the sunken Spanish ship Santu Spiritu full of ingots and treasures, but nothing goes as expected and everything gets even more complicated when with her friend Charlie, she goes to have a few drinks looking to relax, but they end up crossing paths with a couple of men, one in particular leaves her speechless despite her rage, but June has no idea who this handsome man really is. Dean Evans is serious and has trust issues, he is a former military man who now works under contract with the DEA, part of his mission is to monitor June, since apparently her father was in drug deals with the Russians. But when one of these men gets too close to her, he must approach her to try to find out how much she knows and if she is also involved in her father's business. From now on things will get busy for this pair, not only will the attraction between them be impossible to resist, but they will have to face the dangers of chasing a treasure, also the Russians and above all for Dean to overcome his trust issues to that they can get out of this alive.
I loved this story!! It has the perfect mix of laughter, action, suspense, some drama and angst, with lots of chemistry, sensuality, passion and love. The characters are super entertaining and will draw you into their story, which will have you on the edge of your seat. I enjoyed it without a doubt from beginning to end and it's one of those stories that left me pleasantly surprised. I went from laughing out loud to wanting to help them. This story won my heart and is a story you won't want to pass up. Absolutely and Totally Highly Recommended!

¡Absoluta y Totalmente Altamente Recomendada!
