The first half (上巻) was mostly setup, and although it had a fairly strong ending, the payoff did not really come until the second half (下巻). The first half also focused more than I cared for on the politics of the television company responsible for airing the Hakone Ekiden event. Most of the characters here were one-dimensional and cliche, and I did not at all buy the progression of events. Was there really any doubt that the "unexpected" persona would take over the role of lead commentator? Did the producers actually do anything other than hold their breath when the plot required it? This whole section could have been cut, and it would have made a tighter, better story.

The story of the actual team, and how they came together as one, worked fairly well. I didn't fully buy the obligatory switch of the antagonist team members (who like most Ikeido Jun characters seem entirely motivated by a father's absence/death/burden/lack of appreciation). But the new coach was well developed, and I liked the protagonist team members enough to stay around for the second half.
