I play sports and struggle with getting nervous before games, so I grabbed this hoping it would help me get out of my head. It’s actually pretty solid for building that "tough" mindset. The best part is that it’s not just big blocks of boring text, there are lots of bullet points and short stories, which makes it easy to read in between classes or practice. It definitely hyped me up, and I liked that it used examples of real people (like Malala, which was random but cool) to prove that being "tough" isn't just about punching stuff.
The downside is that the title feels a little misleading. If you are looking for actual boxing techniques, combos, or fight strategies, this isn't it. It’s basically a psychology book wrapped in a boxing cover. Also, the author markets this heavily as a guide for "men," but a lot of the advice is just general life stuff about overcoming fear, so the specific focus on "manliness" felt a bit forced and unnecessary. Some chapters, especially the ones on "cognitive control," got a little heavy on the science terms and felt like reading a textbook. It’s a good motivator, just don't expect it to teach you how to throw a hook.
I think this book would be good for anyone into fitness or weightlifting or a specific sport to read. I don't think there was necessarily anything earth shattering in this book, but learning more about this perspective was interesting and I think it could be helpful for some people. initially, I was a little concerned that the book would be written to just appeal to male/masculine readers, but as a woman I did not find this to be the case - I still enjoyed it. I had fun with this read and learning ways I can relate my fitness to my day to day life.
This book has so much to discuss. I'm constantly seeking books that can contribute to my personal development. From time to time, I serve as a mentor for young adults and find it beneficial to have this perspective for the young men in my life. How to apply boxing principles beyond the ring: mental conditioning exercises to enhance your value. This book has completely amazed me.
Boxing mentality is a wonderful book! I loved learning about ask the different facets of mentality through the scope of boxing. I thought that was clever. I enjoyed the end chapter where the author translated boxing principals into personal success! Everyone would have something to learn from this book. Whether it’s literal boxing or personal.
