EN I've said it before and I'll say it again: even though this series has less action than I initially expected, the writing is so solid that it doesn't end up being a problem.
If you're a fan of John Wick, then this manga is for you!
Akira Satou is an elite professional assassin trying to live a normal life. However, events involving those close to him force him back into action. Even so, Akira does his best to solve conflicts without resorting to lethal violence.
Without a doubt, it's one of my favourite ongoing series. It's just a shame the next volumes aren't available yet!
I wasn’t expecting this manga to take a hard turn into multiple ways of men being horribly exploitative to women but here we go. I thought it handed it really well so far.
Between the subplot of the pervert trying to invade Misaki’s privacy and sexually extort her and the guy who’s essentially Tony B from the Sopranos trying to setup a call girl operation and trying to coerce her to be the star attraction with both knowing her past as a gravure idol, it managed to really paint quite a gruesome portrait. It was really fitting I listened to the Fire Walk With Me Soundtrack while reading it.
Yeah this shit goes dark places, but damn the payoff works. If it didn’t stick that landing, I wouldn’t be giving it this high of marks. It didn’t make light of it, and it didn’t sugarcoat it either. Was not expecting this manga to dance the line like this.
Also, the publisher was good enough to put a few hotline numbers on the title page. Great touch, worth taking into consideration here.
The art manages to keep the style solidly grounded, clearly pulling from references but not falling into the pitfalls someone like Greg Land would. Really managed to affect me quite a bit.

Volume 3 of The Fable proves that a legendary assassin trying not to kill people is way more entertaining than watching them pull a trigger.
Sato’s new friend and colleague Misaki gets dragged into a call girls service against her will. Can I just say that I feel so bad for this girl? Not only she has a co-worker who spies on her in his free time but now she also has to entertain men or otherwise people around her get hurt. But, our “on vacation” assassin is on the case to save her.
One thing that I missed from this volume was the humor. Volume 1 was legit really funny and now, by volume 3, we have fully leaned into the yakuza drama without any of the fun. Fingers crossed for more jokes in the future, that’s what makes this series different. But it was really funny seeing The Fable trying to figure out ways how to not kill people on accident.
Definitely got dark in this volume, much less laughs.
I really do feel bad for Misaki, the way that poor girl is absurd and exploited. It doesn't shy away from that at all. This book does depict several instances of extortion, but at the very least we had a small moment of catharsis right before it crosses the line. There isn't a lot compelling dialogue or soliloquies given in this book, it's still very matter of fact. I still really enjoy watching Akira/Fable work tho, it's rare to me to see someone be so capable and good at their job. Even when others think they can take him, his still the biggest fish in the pond.
Extremely disappointed with the direction this took. I bought Omnibus 4 already on the strength of the first two but I don’t know if I want to bother reading it; clearly I misjudged the author and series. I can’t recall ever losing so much goodwill for a manga in such a short time. Even if Omnibus 4 goes back to business as usual I honestly don’t think I’ll enjoy the humor anymore; I feel like I saw a little too much of the author’s personality in here and it’s going to taint my perception of his future work.
Well. That got dark. Not that a manga about a hitman was going to be a barrel of laughs, but the tone was a lot lighter overall before. I wonder if it’ll bounce back after this, or if the series as a whole has just experienced a shift…
The momentum never lets up, but in a way that I find never exhausting as much as exhilarating. Sato/Fable just keeps cooking and the central tapestry of Yakuza meddling is too juicy to let a heavy ass omnibus be put down for any long stretch.
Misaki’s situation really depresses me… especially with how it went as far as it did. At least Sato came in and beat the dude’s ass, though. I liked the introduction of the other Fable as well.
Misaki should have doubled back and stomped on that guy’s head at the end, imo! He sucks.
Incredibly disappointing! This was such a funny series when it started out. I loved it! This volume is just a super generic action revenge story with one or two throwaway jokes. It feels like any number of mediocre crime thrillers out there. I'm considering dropping the series, which is tragic! It really had me at the beginning 😢
