As someone who has an idea for a children's book but is not sure where to start, this book is a valuable resource. As an already self-published author in fiction, children's books are an entirely different animal, with many balls to juggle, such as eye-catching illustrations, layout, and how to source the best illustrator and editor for your needs.
For those new to the world of publishing, Trudy discusses ISBNs, copyrights and the importance of author bios and keywords. Trudy also discusses the differences between traditional publishing and self-publishing. She warns about being wary of vanity publishers who will charge a considerable amount up front to help you create your book, but once they have your money, they won't be there to help you market it at the end.
Another area of interest to me was determining the best option for self-publishing my paperbacks and hardcovers. Trudy offers ideas for utilising social media platforms and launch crews to give your book a sales boost and increase its visibility. She also mentions sharing the reviews on your book to inspire those who follow you to buy it. I know I need to do more of that. I've been slack in that department.
If your book features animals or cute, fluffy creatures, Trudy shares her journey of creating plush toys and the compliance required to bring them to market.
There are plenty of handy hints and links to help you on your children's book publishing journey. It's well worth a read.
Like almost every writer, I’ve often “dreamed” of writing a children’s book & though I’m not gonna say that those dreams were curtailed by the paragraph warning to be careful of language usage 🤣, I will say that many of my formatting, editing and length-detailed questions were answered. I also loved that Ms. Davidson is a proud indie author and advocates for shared pride among her fellow indies. Her writings on the variety of publishing options alone was worth the read. Yet while there are times when, as an indie, she does advocate for the use of “professionals” - like cover choices, etc - I loved how she maintained that most of everything else, including advertising, could be done for free.
