It is another excellent read for Emily Houghton fans and others, too.
Emily Jackson loves a plan. Everything she does is planned to the last detail—well, everything is in her control.
Suddenly, she is sent off on a trip she hasn't accounted for—a trip planned by her little sister, who passed away, to India of all places.
There, she encounters Jacob Green, a man opposite her. He appears to live his life on the whim of a roll of a dice and has been travelling the world for the past few years, apparently with no cares in this world and no inclination to settle anywhere.
Now, I'll start by saying that India is a place dear to me. I loved the descriptions Houghton uses to describe different places in Delhi, Jaipur, Udaipur, and Goa. India assaults your senses in so many ways, and you feel it in the writing.
Back to the two main characters, since the story is told from two POVs.
Emily is a grieving woman. Her loss is fresh. And you can feel it in every decision she makes, sometimes ones she doesn't feel comfortable with.
Jacob is a breath of fresh air, but despite his carefree attitude, I could feel an undercurrent of him hiding from or running from something.
She makes him question some of his laissez-faire decisions. He makes her reconsider how she's been living without thinking about what she wants rather than what she should be doing.
Beautifully told and gripping. I don't want to write too much about the story, but it is not quite friends to lovers or enemies to lovers. Neither is it forced proximity. To me, this is a story about fate...
Many thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for an ARC.

Emily is one of my favourite romance writers, and this latest bittersweet love story was GORGEOUS! Whilst it was meant to be a summer read, it was actually the perfect book to escape the cold gloomy weather with, thanks to its stunning India setting 😍

This is a big opposites attract love story, with both of our main characters coming with a lot of emotional baggage - Olivia having recently lost her sister to cancer, and Jacob with his own secrets (no spoilers as I didn’t see it coming and don’t want to ruin it for you all!). It’s a really emotional read, and definitely not light reading despite that lovely cheerful cover!

Whilst I absolutely loved the romance of it, I was also obsessed with the travelling angle. I’ve been to India a very long time ago, and didn’t feel it was somewhere I wanted to explore more (probably too young!), but this book has really made me want to go and tour the country - you can feel the author’s passion for the place and the food in the pages of this book!

Definitely have some tissues handy, but I’d highly recommend this one for any romance readers!

We are following Olivia who is reluctantly travelling to India, and her physical and mental journey around the country. The author did a fabulous job with making us feel part of the world with their descriptions of the country, food and culture. And their exploration into grief was handled really well with a great character arc for our protagonist.

The banter between Olivia and her love interest was fun to read and the connection between them was believable but I wasn't convinced about the depth of connection with the limited amount of time. And the ending felt rushed, causing the 3rd act 'drama' to feel contrived.

I loved the surrounding cast of characters, who were very entertaining and helped navigate our main characters journey around India and the problems they were facing in the personal lives.

I came away really enjoying my read but wishing for a little bit more length to the book so the main romance plot didn't feel so rushed.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher / author for providing me with a free electronic copy of this book for review.

I initially struggled to connect with Olivia’s character, however I did warm to her once she met Jacob in India.
Olivia’s sister passed away following her long battle with cancer, her last gift was a trip to India, Olivia’s life was mapped out, she a planner and travelling didn’t form part of her plan but she couldn’t refuse. Delhi was everything she feared and more, Emily did a fantastic job of making you feel like you were experiencing it with her.
I loved Jacob’s free spirit and guessed his reasons for this straight away but it didn’t detract from the enjoyment of the story.
There was heartbreak and hope, my only wish was that the ending was longer, it felt quite rushed in comparison to the rest of the book.
Thank you NetGalley, Emily Houghton and Random House for this ARC, all opinions expressed are my own.

This gorgeous book was kindly sent to me by the lovely people at Penguin Random house. This is my second book by Emily Houghton and it most definitely won’t be my last. I was totally engrossed in this book and the developing relationship between Olivia and Jacob. Admittedly for most of the book Olivia would not have been my cup of tea but I slowly warmed to her. I loved all the travelling and all be descriptions of the places, the food and the people I could fully believe I was there. I knew there was something deeper going on for Jacob and when I found out I could have cried. My word what a curveball. Though I loved how it all wrapped up and it was totally perfect. Another fabulous read that I wholeheartedly recommend.

while this book deals with heavy emotions like death, grief & anxiety, i couldn’t connect to it! i found olivia to be very irritable & quite frankly, annoying! i didn’t like the way she interacted with new people she met. jacob wasn’t any better.. he came across as really childish and silly. i would’ve preferred if one of them was more mature!

i’ve read a book by emily houghton before; the last time we met & i really enjoyed that one so naturally, i had high hopes for this! im gutted that this book wasn’t for me as it looked like such a lovely summer romance! i still urge others to try it! just because i didn’t enjoy it, doesn’t mean you won’t! 😚

that totally unnecessary & random argument that occurs near the end was lowkey uncalled for in my opinion🫠

the book itself felt rushed & it was lacking in the romance department, in my opinion. i needed more emotions, more pining & more chemistry from the characters!

the last couple of chapters felt a bit random but they still tugged on my heart strings (im always emotional for no reason, im just a girl😅)

‘take a chance on me’ releases on 01/08/24! thank you to penguin uk for sending me an early copy to read & review! 🧡

Olivia loves planning and structure and she finds herself thrown into the chaos of India for a few months. In her first few days she (literally) bumps into Jacob. He has been travelling non-stop for years, believes in luck and the universe and doesn't plan anything.
They strike an unlikely friendship, with continuing sexual tension and keep coming in and out of eachother's lives while in India.

I have really enjoyed Houghton's first two books, but this one didn't land for me. Olivia was made SO IRRITATING and it was never believable to me that Jacob would be attracted to her. There were also a few times where they would both be annoyed at each other for minor reasons which didn't ring true for adults in their 20s. And then just when we thought Jacob was ok, she also makes his character SO IRRITATING as we head into a finale which felt forced and contrived.

If you happen to pick this up and enjoy it then please do go back and read her last books because you will love those!! Otherwise I'd only recommend picking this one up if you happen to get a copy and you want an easy enough read while on holidays.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed Take a Chance on Me, which was both heartwarming and heart wrenching in equal measure. Olivia and Jacob were such polar opposites in their view of the world that it left me really reflecting on their perspectives and the question of what makes a life meaningful.

This was a gentle read and I found myself carried along with Olivia’s travel experiences. It perfectly captured the sense of being in a new place and having your world view radically shifted. I found the ending a bit abrupt, but overall it was the journey, and Olivia’s development, both individually and in her relationship with Jacob that kept me hooked.

It could be a more difficult read for someone with a loved one with terminal cancer, so I’d recommend checking out trigger warnings. The exploration of grief through the people Olivia meets on her journey captured well both the universal and personal experience of grief, and was an interesting theme throughout.

Thank you Random House UK and NetGalley for this book. Opinions expressed are my own.

This was a lovely romance mostly set in India and I adored it!

Olivia Jackson is a big fan of to-do lists and loves living her ordered life. But when her little sister dies and leaves her a 3 month trip to India, she has to leave it behind and fulfil her sisters wishes - but she has a meticulously planned itinerary! India is a country of chaos though and Olivia’s plans soon fly out the window as she travels around. She meets Jacob in Delhi, and is infuriated by his go with the flow attitude. Jacob has been travelling for years, and doesn’t go home to England at all. He lets dice dictate where he goes and how long he stays and Olivia can’t fathom living life his way. But Jacob’s dice seem to keep throwing them together, and Olivia learns to appreciate Jacob’s way of life. But is this just a travelling connection or is there something deeper to be discovered?

The India setting of this was so so good and was the perfect country to disrupt Olivia’s ordered life. I kept googling the places described so I felt like I was right there with the characters. Jacob and Olivia are the perfect opposites attract couple, and I loved seeing Olivia learn to live outside the lines and actually let things unfold instead of always sticking to a plan. I am much like Olivia when it comes to lists and order though, and some of her experiences had me feeling STRESSED 😂 I kind of guessed the ‘secret’ as to why Jacob was a perpetual traveller, but it didn’t take away from the gorgeousness of the story at all. This is a wonderful romance, and I would definitely recommend you check it out! I’ve been really into romance again lately - I think the sunny weather makes me just want easy feel good reads

I read this book in a day. From the moment I picked it up, I was hooked, and I couldn’t put it down. I loved the double POV and how the two characters interacted. Their banter was excellent. The setting was also fantastic. I have never been to India, but I am not keen to visit some of the places mentioned in this book - not the ‘best curry’ house in India though. Olivia is a strong woman who has been through something incredibly difficult, but who must find a way forward. Lucas is running from something and allowing fate to dictate his every decision. Olivia is meticulous and organised, Lucas lives in the moment and leaves everything to chance. They are brought together by fate and chance, in a country filled with the unexpected.
I adored this book and I rooted for the two characters. The ending was unexpected and brought tears to my eyes.

When I read Emily’s books I know they’re going to be fast paced and this was no exception. I read the whole book in a day (basically two sittings) and I really enjoyed it. I loved the travel aspect of this book and seeing all the fun places the fmc explored! I loved the slow burn romance but also how the story was about finding yourself and doing things that scare you with a nice romance to go with it! It was also very emotional which I did expect after reading Last Time We Met! It is also closed door!!! Things happened at the end I didn’t love but I still would recommend (maybe like a 3.75⭐️)

I don't know why I waited so long to read this book as I loved Before I Saw You, the previous book by this author. With her easy to read writing style, I managed to read this book fairly quickly as well as pick up on the twist that she incorporated. It didn't take away from my enjoyment though as I appreciated the way the story was laid out and enjoyed the ride as we traveled with Olivia and Jacob across India. The book was vibrant and I felt as if I was along with them experiencing all their travels. The romance storyline was sweet and easy to get into. I look forward to reading what Emily writes next.

Feeling lukewarm about this one. Jacob and Olivia had cute banter, I’ll give them that. I always looked forward to the times they met and traveled around together. It was fun, and pointed out how different they were from each other and yet they have the same goal—which is to travel in India. Jacob’s carefree attitude blends well with Olivia’s strict, no chill attitude.

A travelling romance is always fun to me, as I usually enjoy traveling books from authors like Jo Watson, but this one lacked something I wanted to see, which was the travelling the hero and heroine did together. Yes, they did do some of it together but there were long periods of time where they were separated and didn’t travel together. I found those period boring because I wanted to see them together so I usually skimmed those parts.

I was also a bit disappointed after the miscommunication they had after Olivia went back to London and Jacob stayed in India.

The epilogue was very unfinished. It stated Jacob continued with his treatments but never did say if he succeeded in beating his sickness or where Jacob and Olivia went in their future after.

This is a difficult review and I’ve settled at 3 stars, it would’ve been a 4 until 85%.

I’m annoyed at the curveball at the end where Jacob’s secret is revealed. It came out of nowhere, I know there had been a couple of hints but not nearly enough to suggest that this was coming. If I’m honest it felt a little lazy to just be like “she’s dealt with this once so we’ll just throw it at her again” because she’s already unpacked it throughout the rest of the book. To just throw that out there at like 85% and rush it through in the last 15% was a ridiculous choice for a narrative. There wasn’t nearly enough time to really discuss the growth of the two characters, there was sudden love- bombing that was seemingly caused by the situation rather than being real feelings. It just felt completely left field from the rest of the book.

The problem is, the rest of the book was well-written, I enjoyed the travelling aspect, I mostly felt like there was decent chemistry as their friendship grew (although the dialogue didn’t really do what I think it was supposed to in building up the chemistry, that really came more from being told what the characters were feeling and seeing their actions). There were times when it felt a little repetitive in the middle but then I enjoyed the growth arc through yoga and how she slowly let go of control as the time went on.

I don’t know, I didn’t feel like there was a proper end to the book that we deserved after following their story in the way that we did. It’s a shame because as I say up until that point it was getting 4 stars. The travel aspect is really what kept me reading rather than the actual relationship dynamic which isn’t ideal for what is billed as a romance.

When Olivia’s sister dies she leaves behind for Olivia a ticket to India so Olivia makes the decision to move away from her ordered life and go on the trip. Jacob has been travelling the world for the last five years and it’s just so happens he’s also in India. Olivia and Jacob are complete opposites but can something grow between them?

Having read and loved the author’s previous two books I couldn’t wait to read this one. I can honestly say that this is now my third favourite book from this author. The storyline was perfect and everything I hoped it would be. It was heart-warming, with romance, friendship all taking place against the backdrop of India. The author has done an amazing job in bringing India to life in the story through the descriptions included in the book. When Olivia arrives in India and her first impression is that it is hot and chaotic I could definitely relate to this impression because it is exactly what I thought when I visited India for the first time as an adult. I loved seeing India through the eyes of the characters and I couldn’t help but fell in love with the country all over again.

From the beginning it’s very clear that Olivia and Jacob are complete opposites. Olivia is someone who is very organised. Every aspect of her life is planned and she doesn’t divert away from that plan. As soon as she finds out she’s going to India she starts to plan and creates an itinerary of every place she will go and visit, meaning every moment of her time is accounted for. Jacob doesn’t plan every step of his life and he just goes with the flow. He uses his trusty dice and a list of places to decide where he will go next. He’s happy to live a more spontaneous life rather than a planned and organised one like Olivia. Although Olivia and Jacob are very different they also have a lot in common. They're both running away from something. In Olivia’s case that is grief. She's never dealt with losing her sister and it’s something she’s never accepted. Jacob is running away from something because he has been travelling for the last few years but it isn’t clear why and he is reluctant to return home or communicate with his family.

I loved following Olivia and Jacob’s journey of getting to know each other and seeing their connection develop from friendship into something more. I adored their first meeting because it was memorable and the perfect meet cute because they literally bump into each other and that’s how their story starts. When they meet Olivia is very frazzled because she's in a new place, she's feeling a bit lost and is very much out of her comfort zone. Jacob who is an experienced traveller takes Olivia under his wing, reassuring her that she’ll be fine and puts her at ease. It's through Jacob’s influence that Olivia starts to live life more freely and starts to loosen up. She embraces the idea of taking one day at a time and seeing where the day will take her, moving away from the strict and rigid life she is used to. However, as Olivia and Jacob are complete opposites this does cause tension between them as does the fact that they are both keeping secrets from each other.

The perfect summer read.

Olivia Jackson likes to live her life knowing exactly what will happen next, she has a plan for everything so, when her little sister passes away, leaving each of her family members a letter, Olivia can't bring herself to open hers. When she eventually does she finds a ticket to go travelling to India and can think of nothing worse in life but, it was her sister's dying wish and she has to honour this one last thing. Jacob Green is the complete opposite, he's been travelling for the last five years and his life is determined by the throw of a dice, where he ends up is, to him, all down to fate. When these two literally bump into each other in Delhi she is frustrated by how laid back he is about everything but, when it's time to go their separate ways, she wonders if fate will bring them back together and if she'll discover who Jacob Green really is...

Take A Chance On Me tells the story of two people who are polar opposites in personality and beliefs about how they live their lives. Olivia is all about control, Jacob is a fly by the seat of your pants kind of guy who lives for the moment. Olivia is still grieving the death of her sister and, even though the thought of a trip to India scares the life out of her, she guesses she needs to do it. Jacob is a bit of an enigma, not giving anything away about his backstory and why he relies on the roll of a dice to determine his next destination. Told in alternate chapters from the perspectives of the two main characters we are led on a journey of discovery and life changing adventures for both of them. I wasn't sure about Olivia at first, but she steadily grew on me, I loved Jacob from the start, although he was a bit too enthusiastic at times but, as we discover later in the book, there's a very good reason for that. I loved everything about this book, the setting was perfect and the story, which had me smiling one minute and crying the next, had a good mix of humour and emotion. I've loved Houghton's previous books and this one did not disappoint either, but you will need tissues!

I'd like to thank Random House UK, Transworld and Netgalley for inviting me to read this book, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.

'Take A Chance on Me' is another beautifully paced contemporary romance from Emily Houghton; the story is wonderfully written, with amazing settings across India and starring Olivia and Jacob, two characters that couldn't be more different in their approaches to just about everything.

Olivia is a repressed uptight young woman, struggling for control in her world following the tragic death of her younger sister. She can't think of anything worse that leaving things to chance, she has a spreadsheet and an itinerary for absolutely everything, calendar reminders and alarms to organise her hectic life, and she lives in dread of missing anything off of her to do list. When she passed away, Olivia's sister left her a ticket to India with strict instructions to go and have a good time - and so she jumps on the plane ready to explore India, in line with her carefully constructed timetable.

Jacob on the other hand is about as laid back as you can imagine - he drifts from country to country, town to town, with his life choices dictated by a pair of dice. Wherever the dice tell him to go in the world, he's there- or stays put for another week and another chance to roll. Outwardly he's a loveable clown but underneath the outgoing exterior there's some buried pain that he's not going to let out and he tends to keep people at arms' length as much as Olivia does.

Olivia and Jacob literally bump into each other on her first day in Delhi- he's a godsend as he helps her to navigate the chaotic bustling streets and bazaars, and they enjoy spending time together. As Olivia moves on to her next pre-planned destination, she assumes that's the last she'll ever see of Jacob, but does fate have different ideas?

The chemistry between Jacob and Olivia is electric but they are both so wary of being hurt by life that they run away from every chance of happiness rather than risk being hurt. The slow burn romance was deliciously played out, with countless missed opportunities to take action on both sides. And the descriptions of the Indian settings were magnificent, all of my senses were reeling from the thoughts of the sound, smells and sights all around.

I was unsure about this book to begin with. Olivia and Jacob were SO different. Yes, the summary said that she was a planner and he was carefree but I feel like it didn't fully explain their vastly different personalities. Olivia had a spreadsheet for everything whereas Jacob just ignored anything of consequence.

I was very touched by the parts about Olivia's sister, Leah, and found thes were very sad but, haing read Emily Houghton before, I felt prepared for the fact that this wasn't going to make me cry.

Olivia's job was meant to sound super important and everything but it just sounded so boring that I lost interest in anything she was worrying about in regards to work. It was just so dull.

India was so well written. I sometimes let my autistic brain decide that certain places will be too hot/too crowded/too much to visit but reading about it in this story really made me want to visit! I googled a lot to see what places were mentioned so that I could see the beauty for myself and it made me wish I was there.

I really did like the connection between Jacob and Olivia. OK, it was awkward at first but I enjoyed seeing them grow closer and I always enjoy a book that includes a bit of epistolary, even via email.

The supporting characters were quirky, kind and interesting, which also made this bok enjoyable.

Although it was obvious that there was going to be a twist, it was still a lot more unexpected and much sadder than I was expecting and I was sobbing by the end.

I felt that the ending and epilogue were very short and sudden but it was a change to read something that didn't end with a HEA but with hope.

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a touching and poignant read.

‘In this country, you can plan and plan all you like, but things will happen as and when they want to. All we can do is relax and go with it.’

Olivia Jackson is a meticulous planner who prefers to leave nothing to chance. After her sister Leah died, Olivia avoided opening the letter she left. When she finally does, she discovers that Leah has left her an open ticket to India. With some reluctance, Olivia (who needs a break from work) plans a detailed itinerary.

Jacob Green has been travelling the world for five years. He relies on the roll of the dice to determine when he travels, and where to. A throw of the dice on his 30th birthday sees him headed to India.

Jacob and Olivia run into each other (literally) in Delhi while Olivia is attempting to find a phone shop. Olivia cannot believe how laid-back Jacob is, while Jacob finds Olivia’s approach to life constricting. And yet, there is a spark of attraction between them, and when Olivia leaves Delhi for the next stage of her travel, she has Jacob’s email address.

We travel with Olivia as she discovers that meticulous planning does not always work in India. And we wonder why Jacob is so reluctant to return home, to have contact with his family.

Gradually, Jacob’s story unfolds. Gradually, Olivia discovers there are people she can trust, that life can be lived (and enjoyed) without every aspect being controlled. Along the way, we meet some other interesting characters as well as seeing glimpses of both the beauty and chaos of India.

And the ending? You will need to read it for yourself. Romance with a twist.

“Two shakes and a roll. Show me, Universe, where I should go…”

Olivia Jackson’s life is one big to-do list. When her sister tragically dies, leaving her a ticket to go travelling, Olivia has to leave her ordered world.

Jacob Green couldn’t be more different. He’s been travelling the world for five years leaving his plans to destiny and a roll of the dice.

When the two first meet, Olivia finds Jacob’s laid-back attitude infuriating. But as they part ways, she can’t help but wish that fate bring them together again. And if it does, what secret is Jacob hiding?

The book is set in India and takes Olivia across the length of the country as she explores different cities and meets all kinds of people, whether local or travellers. Houghton’s descriptions about India and the experience are beautifully captured and, no doubt, could be mesmerising for readers, especially those unfamiliar with India.

I liked how Olivia’s time in India changes her and how Jacob’s story takes the reader through the highs and lows of his life. I loved how the writer used a pair of dice to move the story along. I am not a fan of Olivia and Jacob’s chemistry and wished there was more of their story together, before the end, especially after that heart-breaking reveal. Even so, I appreciate the writer leaving it open-ended for the reader to interpret as they wish.

A journey amidst the vibrant colours and flavours of India, this fated love story finds its home on the path to self-discovery and comforts your heart with hope.

Thank you to @netgalley for sending me this book in exchange for an honest review. Take A Chance on Me by Emily Haughton will be published on 1st August 2024.

This book follows two main characters Olivia and Jacob. Olivia is grieving for her sister and ends up in India for three months after having to take time off work. The trip was booked by her sister who recently passed away to get her to live a little and enjoy life. She creates an intense itinerary to follow to see as much as possible. Then we meet Jacob who makes his decisions by rolling a dice and this is how he decides when and where to go places. Chance brings them together as their paths cross and alter each others plans whether they like it or not!

The characters are built up so well, normally I like reading about one character more than another but that wasn't the case with this one! This book will take you on an adventure around India, make you hungry and emotional all at the same time. The settings were amazing and I did laugh out loud at parts!

It's a book you can get through really quickly if you wanted to as it's written so well.

I did have a big gripe about it though. The ideas seemed copied or overdone from other books. For example Jacobs dice rolls were like the coin flips in The Flip Side by James Bailey and how many books have we all read where female character has an episode at work and hr get involved like in The Switch by Beth O'Leary! It doesn't take away how good the book is but I feel just if it was a smidge more original it could have been a wow book!

I love armchair travelling and this book took me all over India, to the point I can’t tell whether I’ve actually been there or I’ve just read about it. The vibrant detailed atmospheric descriptions were vividly realistic, with Delhi being exactly as I imagined and Goa just as beautiful.

Jacob was a breath of fresh air with his carefree, living life to the full attitude but I personally felt more aligned to Olivia’s approach, organising meticulous itineraries and making sure every minute of the day was carefully planned for.

When these two characters meet, their attitudes couldn’t be more different but there’s a spark that fires between them which they can’t ignore…..can they overcome the predilections that control their everyday and enjoy a happy ever after?.……or will there be twists and turns that will keep you reading well past your bedtime?

Finding romance unexpectedly in soaring temperatures wasn’t on either of their agendas and I have to admit myself, to feeling hot under the collar and not just with the Delhi heat! Not just an exploration of solo travelling, the story is an exploration of the heart, emotions, grief and learning to live life unconditionally.

These ‘will they, won’t they’ stories are so frustrating and I was screaming in my head to sort themselves out and make things work. “Take a Chance on Me” is a wonderful escapist romance, that surprisingly pulls on your heartstrings. Funny, heartbreaking, poignant and highly entertaining, I adored this book and if this is your reading genre, then you’ll surely love this book too. It’s billed as the summer romance for 2024 - however for me, it’s the romance of the year!

I’ve read Emily’s first two books and enjoyed them - particularly Before I Saw You - so I knew I had to get myself on the blog tour for her newest book Take A Chance On Me.

We are introduced to Olivia Jackson, a highly-strung planner who needs to have every second of her life meticulously controlled, and Jacob Green, a laid-back traveller who goes wherever his trusty dice tell him to. Following tragic circumstances in Olivia’s life, she ends up in India with a tightly packed itinerary that leaves her no opportunity to relax. Olivia literally bumps into Jacob, who she finds immediately infuriating due to his lack of respect for following the rules.

I have to be honest - I found Olivia to be quite an irritating character 😫 I did empathise with the sadness she has endured but she was sooo unnecessarily prickly! I guess the whole point of the story is of opposites attracting, but it just seemed like too much of a stretch for super chill Jacob to be attracted to that kind of personality. However, Olivia does mellow out towards the end and drops everything to be with Jacob when he needs her. I also did feel like there could have been more fireworks in the romance department!

Overall Emily writes well and therefore this book is easy to fly through, which I definitely did. Although it focuses on pretty heavy subjects such as death, grief and familial strain, it’s ultimately a feel-good read that will take you around the world and make you wish you were there (in some places 😅).

Emily Houghton tackles grief in the poignant 'Take a Chance on Me'.

Type A and meticulous with her plans and spreadsheets, Olivia Jackson is forced out of her comfort zone by her late sister who planned a plane ticket for her to travel to India. Compounding her anger at her sister for forcing the trip on her, is her grief after nursing her in her final months from cancer. Along the way, prickly Olivia runs into the freewheeling Jacob Green who has been backpacking for the past five years with zero plans to live the sort of straight-laced life Olivia craves. Except what is Jacob running from?

This book was so emotional and, at times, I found it hard to keep turning the page from the dread I could feel coming which forced me to skim as it was to stressful waiting for the reveal. I loved the slow-burn between Olivia and Jacob. Both are afraid of connecting with each other, yet they can't help themselves. The vivid descriptions of India were also fantastic it almost made me want to go (the crowds sounded a bit stressful!).

By the end of the book though I felt a huge lump in my throat as it was hopeful but very uncertain, especially when you consider everything they characters have been through. For that reason, while I enjoyed this book, it's very much a read once only instead of a re-read for comfort.

Thanks to Random House UK, Transworld Publishers and NetGalley for the ARC.

Title: Take a Chance on Me by Emily Houghton
Release Date: August, 1st, 2024

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Stars

"Take a Chance on Me" by Emily Houghton offers a refreshing twist on the typical romance novel, whisking readers away to exotic locales and presenting an unconventional love story.

Olivia Jackson and Jacob Green couldn't be more different, but their opposing personalities create an intriguing dynamic that keeps readers hooked from start to finish. While Olivia's meticulous nature may frustrate some readers, it adds depth to her character and provides insight into her motivations.

The exotic settings and Jacob's spontaneous approach to life injects the story with a sense of adventure and unpredictability. However, the ending left me wanting more closure. I thought maybe the extra in that ending would’ve made a huge difference.

This was a delightful read that offers a fresh perspective on love and fate. Despite some minor frustrations, the novel's unique premise and engaging characters make it a pleasant escape for romance enthusiasts.

Thank you to The Publisher Random House UK, Transworld Publishers | Penguin , The Author Emily Houghton & NetGalley for an advanced reader copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review.

This was a fantastic romance read that offered the reader a journey through India, which was made beautiful through the writing style, making me feel as if I was right there.
I loved the dual perspective of the story, as it allowed us to get to know both Olivia & Jacob and offered us insights into them and their background. Each of them was so different, both going on their own journey, both physically and mentally and it was nice to see how their relationship naturally evolved. Character development was so evident to see within Olivia and I really liked how she eventually opened up and you could see her growth through the story.
Grief, depression, terminal illness and dysfunctional relationships were just a few of the topics covered within the book and they were written about so delicately and so well, that you couldn't help become invested in the characters and the storyline. At one point of the book, towards the end, I did not expect the twist that we recieved and I was literally sobbing.
The epilogue of the book was such a perfect ending for the story and I loved how everyone came together on the beach. This was the perfect summer read that I absolutely loved and I can't wait to read more of her books soon.

Take a Chance on Me by Emily Houghton
Rating: 4/5

Olivia Jackson and Jacob Green are polar opposites, yet their clashing personalities weave an enthralling tapestry throughout the narrative, captivating readers from beginning to end.

Olivia's precision and attention to detail, though potentially irksome to some, enrich her character and offer glimpses into her inner drive.

Against the backdrop of exotic locales, Jacob's impulsive nature injects the tale with excitement and unforeseen twists.

However, the conclusion left me wanting for some sort of resolution. Perhaps an additional element in that final chapter could have provided the satisfying closure I needed.

This novel offers a delightful perspective on love and destiny, presenting a fresh take on these timeless themes. While encountering minor frustrations, the story's original premise and captivating characters provide a pleasant getaway for fans of romance, offering an enjoyable escape into its pages.

Thank you so much to NetGalley, Random House UK, Transworld Publishers, and the author, Emily Houghton, for providing me with an ARC copy in exchange for an honest and fair review.

I have read and enjoyed Houghton's previous two books so was delighted to have the opportunity to read this one.

Olivia is one of life’s planners who likes to be in control of everything. But when her sister dies of cancer and leaves her the gift of a plane ticket to India, she sets off with some reluctance – but with a detailed itinerary in place. In Delhi she bumps into Jacob, someone who couldn’t be more different from her – he has been travelling the world for five years and decides his next destination on the roll of a dice. They are certainly an unlikely combination but sparks fly from the outset

Told from alternate points of view, I very much enjoyed Olivia’s story of self-discovery as she is take out of her comfort zone and we also learn more about Jacob’s ups and downs and begin to understand why he is the way he is. I have never been to India but this book made me want to book a trip, with people and places - and food - brought vividly to life. There is humour, there is heartbreak and of course romance and it all ends on a hopeful, if uncertain, note - a perfect summer read.

At first I thought this was just your standard rom-com – uptight Olivia and gambler Jacob keep finding each other in India… must be fate! – but there are a few deeper secrets buried beneath the actions of both main characters to explain their dramatic differences.

The main problem was that I just didn’t feel the chemistry between them. They seemed to go from finding each other immensely irritating to ‘true love’ quite rapidly and (as is often the case in romcoms to be fair) their communication is absolutely appalling. They have so many secrets, lies, omissions and misunderstandings between them that I lost any faith that they could make it work in the long-term.

There was a nice little sleight of hand involved in the plotline, leading me to believe that a character’s secret lay in a particular direction then blindsiding me with the eventual reveal, and I really liked being kept on my toes like that – it adds an extra layer of interest to the story beyond the main characters’ relationship with each other.

So, yet again from this author, another very readable romcom that just slightly misses the mark for me, but not enough that I wouldn’t try more from her in future.
