Gulf Coast Getaway #1

The Lighthouse Cafe

Rate this book
At the reading of her late husband’s will, 53-year-old Ginny Rigsby discovers two things—he had a secret family, and she has one hour to vacate the premises before that family takes possession of her beloved home.

Grief-stricken by this crushing revelation and now homeless, Ginny drives until she finds herself at the foot of the emerald waters in Florida’s Gulf Coast. There, she stumbles into an auction—an historical lighthouse is up for grabs to the highest bidder.

Before she can second guess her actions, Ginny buys the place. Determined to make a fresh go with her life, she decides to turn the lighthouse into a café, and the menu will be inspired from her late mother’s Southern cookbook. She hopes this new venture will distract her from the life she lost and offer some healing.

Reece Rigby is a second-year medical student who wants to be anything but. When she discovers that her mother needs help starting up a café in an old lighthouse, she jumps at the chance. Maybe while she’s there, Reece will find her heart’s true calling.

Chandler Rigby has a successful career in New York as a jewelry designer. That is, until her business dries up. Even though she’s got a fantastic boyfriend in the dashing Hudson, Chandler has lost her muse. Maybe an extended trip to the beach will help her reclaim her art.

Together, these three women will search for purpose in their lives. They will discover heartache and love, inspiration, and healing. Secrets from the past and present will be revealed, and Ginny will discover a new life that will sweep her off her feet.

A very enjoyable story—perfect for weekend reading or the beach! A mother and her two daughters are each down on their luck; however, circumstances bring them back together and changes all their lives for the better. I highly recommend!

When I first read the book summary, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this story because of the cheating/second family thing. Well, it totally charmed me!
I loved seeing Ginny’s strength and courage as she starts a new life. In addition to being a cheater, her narcissistic husband was such a jerk to her, and she just shines and thrives without him.

Her two daughters, worried about their mom impulsively buying a lighthouse, join her in Florida. Both girls are struggling with issues and are keeping their own secrets. I loved how these three finally all opened up to each other and found purpose, love, healing, and inspiration.

The author did an amazing job of making the sights, sounds, and smells of the Florida beach feel so real. I thoroughly enjoyed all the descriptions of the delicious comfort foods that they served at the café, and wished I had a copy of Ginny’s cookbook. And, it was really refreshing having a couple in their 50’s falling in love.

The Lighthouse Café was a wonderful story, and a perfect beach read. I’ll definitely be reading more by this author.

Many thanks to the author for a review copy. All opinions are my own.

Disappointing

This book was shallow, unbelievable, and easy to put down. The characters all lie. It wearied me to read about tingling, zinger feelings, and unrealistic romances. Spare me.

Definitely one of the most beautiful and wholehearted books I’ve read this year. Everything was so well written I genuinely felt sad and happy for all three main characters. It was dramatic at some points, but I absolutely loved it. The bond between the mother and her two daughters was delightful.

Aiden and Hudson - these two men (keep in mind Aiden is in his fifties) raised my standards soooo high, if they weren’t high enough. I absolutely love Hudson. So understanding and supportive. He wrote her letters. Love letters. And Aiden is also so supportive and patient with Ginny. These two men are just one of the best ones I’ve read.

Although I love the book and everything about it, the fact that it was written in 3rd person WITH triple POV….I don’t know how to feel about that. Yes it was nice to have the pov of the mother and the daughters, but I think if it was in 1st person, that book would’ve been definitely much better.

The conflicts were so well written. I felt the pain for all of them. Ginny finding out her husband has a secret family and leaving the house to them, Reece not following her heart and being struggling in med school and falling in love in the man her friend is in love… And Chandler losing her muse (relatable) and thinking she’s not good enough for her boyfriend (I was absolutely devastated). Love the happy ending for them all. They deserve it.

Virginia (Ginny) Rigby thought that the reading of her husband’s will at their home in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta was merely a formality. However, the deceased had incorporated a surprise announcement in his will, a revelation that Ginny is at a loss on how to share with her grown daughters, Chandler and Reece, who had recently returned to their lives following their mother’s encouragement. Reeling from grief, toppled by shock and a whirlwind of emotions from self-reproach to rage, Ginny begins her new reality without a GPS destination. How does one begin anew when the path ahead is unknown?

The circumstances that led Ginny to leave Georgia transformed her story from loss and grief into an inspiring tale of resilience and joy. The story is told from the perspectives of Ginny, Chandler, and Reece and delves into the complex dynamics of their relationships. It explores the bond between a mother and her daughters, the forging of new connections as Ginny moves forward, and the sisters' choices as they reflect on their previous perceptions of themselves and each other. It also delves into how they redefine the pursuit of their dreams and how these choices will impact their future as a family and individuals.

Reviewer’s Note: At the end of the novel, readers are invited to sign up for the author’s newsletter and receive a bonus scene. Although I’m not a fan of this type of invitation, I pursued the option and enjoyed the bonus scene.

Just enjoyed listening to the audiobook for this new series! Living in Georgia all my life , and vacationing in the Panhandle of Florida from 30A to Port St. Joe several times a year, every year, I am specifically enjoying this delightful beach read! I couldn’t help but chuckle at the southern accent Isabella Tugman used in the audio. It was quite cute. 😊 She did a good job with the voices for the various characters bouncing between the southern accents and the New York accent for Chandler’s boyfriend. I’m eagerly awaiting the audiobooks for the next installments. There’s just something special about actually sitting on that beautiful white sandy beach reading about someone else finding and sharing our bliss. 4.5 Stars to the author Bebe Reed for the creative and well developed characters and story, and to Isabella Tugman for her creative narration of the audiobook.

What a great book to kick off summer reading! This one starts with some action right off the bat, and jumps into the plot. We get three POVs between Ginny and her daughters, Reece and Chandler, and I liked being able to see the situation from each of their perspectives. Some things didn’t feel quite as fleshed out as I’d have liked, and I wish there had been some more heart-to-heart moments earlier on rather than later, but they were still sweet and got the point across.

The lighthouse setting was perfect and I felt like I was at this beachy town while reading. The small town vibes were high, including some colorful local characters. I also loved the descriptions of all the food, and how cozy and homey it made the cafe sound. The ending of the book is a cliff hanger, and I’m really curious to see where the second book picks up.

If you’re looking for a quick and fun beach read, look no further!

Still reeling from her husband’s sudden death, Ginny is blindsided during the reading of his will. She packs up and runs away, ending up in a small town on the Florida gulf coast. She stumbles into an auction for a local lighthouse and throws caution to the wind and buys it. Now she has to figure out what’s next. Her two daughters are also dealing with the grief of losing their father and start questioning their life choices.

What a fun summer read! This was perfect after reading a darker book. The characters are brought to life with realistic situations. A mother trying to shield her children, children trying to live up to perceived expectations. Sisters learning to become friends. Totally relatable! The secondary characters are welcome additions. I look forward to reading the rest of the series!

I received an ARC of this book. Opinion is mine alone!

My first read from this Author and won't be my last. This book is the first in the Gulf Coast Getaway series and I cannot wait for the second. I found this book to start off with a bang of emotion right away. The emotions then went up, down and back and forth with the main protagonist Ginny and her daughters with whom she has a not so "all the feels" relationship, this due to the family dynamic the daughters had while growing up with a narcissistic Father and a Mother who didn't have a voice. I admire how circumstances bring them together and they get to know each other all over again. I really enjoyed this book and actually read it in one day. I will definitely be on the lookout for the next in the series. Thank you so much to the Author, Bebe Reed for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 stars for The Lighthouse Cafe! I was gifted a digital ARC of this book. The Lighthouse Cafe completely swept me up in the life of Ginny and her daughters. Ginny just found out at the reading of her husband’s will that she has 1 hour to gather her belongings and leave the house she and her deceased husband raised their daughters in. He had a secret family who now owns the house. What’s Ginny to do now? She makes her way to Florida where a whole new world of possibilities present themselves. Her daughters join her in Florida for this new adventure. I love this book; I read it in a day! This is a great summer story and I can’t wait for more.

3 southern charm stars 🌟

Theme: beach town, family, 2nd chances

Tragedies may have unexpected outcomes. A father’s death, long kept secret, a mother running away, daughters running to her to avoid their own problems. It is a heartwarming story of a mother re-kindling with herself and her daughters while they are all trying to solve their problems. What I lacked was more heart to heart conversations. I think I expected a bit more emotions - I wish the secrets were revealed early on and they leaned into each other to heal together.
I am really intrigued with the surprise bridge to book 2.

Thank you Bebe for my ARC copy ❤️

Settings: Georgia, Alabama, Florida Panhandle

I read this book as part of my 2024 challenge to read books with settings in all 50 states and this book covered three states. Yay!! This was a clean, contemporary book that I totally enjoyed except for one, tiny scene that did not ruin the total book for me. I would like to read the rest of the series as this was the first book in the "Gulf Coast Getaway" series. "Priester's Pecans" was mentioned and this is a real place on Interstate 65 South of Montgomery in Fort Deposit, Al. My friends and I stop here all the time to get snacks and stretch our legs on trips as it is a favorite.

Overall cute and I want to love it but I HATE the beginning and I feel like that was such a wrench in the story that I wanted more closure to… ONE HOUR?! like she’s not going to challenge it? Make sure her daughters get their things? She has no family heirlooms to get? She doesn’t get to keep their wedding gifts? What did his daughters get?? I just can’t with how unfinished that part of the plot seems. 🙄

Horrible book that reads like AI.
They tried so hard to make the characters flawed, that they were way too annoying and immature. Yuck. I was cringing. Cant believe I finished it.

Ginny's husband died suddenly and with her children away the will is due to be read. Her husband's lawyer is in the house and is waiting to read it, through the front door comes a young woman with a boy who is also there for the reading. Ginny is curious but as the lawyer is about to start she says nothing. The lawyer begins reading and leaves small bequests for his brother etc and then says that the house and all its contents and all of the rest of his money goes to the young woman and her son who have just come in. They are his "other" family, her son being his son too. And, to add insult to injury he says that at the end of this reading his wife has 1 hour to remove all her possessions from the house and not a minute longer.

Everyone in the room appears shocked at this treatment except for the young woman. Ginny races upstairs and grabs cases and begins to throw clothes in and makes it 1 minute over time I think. She throws it all into her car and drives. Anywhere. She ends up in a seaside town a long way from Atlanta and finds a lighthouse being auctioned that day (she slept in her car on that seafront that night), she goes along and finds herself bidding a huge amount for this lighthouse despite having only a short glance at it. She has no idea what she will do with it but she's spent all the little money her husband left her in his will of millions of dollars.

Here begins the story of her fightback against her husband's bad treatment to her all her married life, and the new life also for her 2 daughters who have also been treated badly by him. She opens a cafe for lunches only and has one set course of dishes each day. It takes off very well as she is using the recipe book left to her by her grandmother and whose recipes she used to enjoy so much. This cafe is the new beginning of all of their lives. Quite a nice book but don't you just hate hate that deceitful waste of space of a husband? It's good to see that they are all survivors and can survive by themselves, loved it.

I read this book because I was feeling really down in spirits and needed a pick me up. This was really a good choice, it was a light, cozy and a nice read.
We see Ginny and her daughters are being haunted by the highest expectations of their dead husband/dad (he was a bastard) while they try to manage their lives that seems to be falling apart. Because of the bastard influence they try to hide their own failures but we all know that mantaining secrets doesn´t last, so everything comes to light. We see their complicated relationship and despite thinking they have a close bond, they only start to really bond when they invest their time and effort on the lighthouse café.

I really like Ginny and Reese, both of them had real problems unlike Chandler who has to deal with rich people problems. Ginny had to deal with homelessness, she didn´t have a job and she didn´t have any career preparation whatsoever in life because she was a stay at home mom. She only got a certain quantity of money that was mostly gone when she bought the lighthouse.
Reese had to deal with her path in life, failing classes and being expelled from medical school.

Chandler problems were having a creative block and thinking she wasn´t good enough for her rich boyfriend. This character created her own problems, at the beginning I felt bad for her but every time I read her POVs, I found her really vapid and selfish, she lives in her own world and doesn´t take any interest in having a bond with her sister, mother or even her own boyfriend.

Apart from my dislike of this character...

I do like the plot, the characters, the secondary characters, and there is no unnecessary drama. I enjoyed my time reading it.

This was a great book with an interesting story and wonderful characters. I immediately jumped into the next book in the series,

Amazon synopsis:
At the reading of her late husband’s will, Ginny Rigby discovers two things.

One: He had a secret family.

Two: She has one hour to vacate the premises before that family takes possession of her beloved home.

Grief-stricken and homeless, Ginny drives until she arrives at the foot of the emerald waters in Florida's Gulf Coast. There, she stumbles into an auction—an historical lighthouse is up for grabs to the highest bidder.

Using every last penny she has, Ginny buys the place and decides to transform the lighthouse into a beachside café. The only problem is, she's never run a restaurant before.

But even worse, how will she tell her grown daughters the shameful truth about their father?

Reece Rigby has a secret—she’s failing medical school and is afraid to tell anyone. So when she discovers that her mother needs help starting up a café in an old lighthouse, she jumps at the chance, and hopes to keep Ginny from discovering her secret.

Chandler Rigby’s successful career as a New York jewelry designer is finished. Her muse has dried up, and she feels lost. Maybe a trip to the beach will help Chandler reclaim her art.

Together, these three women will search for purpose. They will discover heartache and love, inspiration, and healing. But will the secrets they’re keeping from one another destroy their bonds, or bring these women closer together?

Everyone is keeping a secret in this book. First we have Ginny recently widowed who finds as the will is being read that her husband had another life. Ginny has lost just about everything now, so she packs up and moves to Florida – very close to a deserted lighthouse. Daughters Reece is going thru medical school, but isn’t sure its what she wants and Chandler is having trouble getting motivated with her jewellery business and boyfriend. No one is telling the other what exactly is going on in their lives, then Ginny finds out the lighthouse is for sale, and maybe this might be a new fresh start for her. I loved it.

Loved this story

Ginny, Reese and Chandler all come together and they all have secrets.
Ginny is the mom and she has one big secret she is to embarrassed to tell her daughters Reese and Chandler.
But each daughter has their own secret. When all their secrets come out will the all began to really heal. Sugar Cove seems to be a great place to heal.
Cute story, but ended way to soon and was open ended , so you have to continue the story in the next book. Not sure it is is a big continuing story.

I’m reading every book in this series!

I absolutely love books based around the beach and lighthouses, but this book comes with some great southern drama! Ginny’s husband has just died and his secrets come to life that end up leaving her with nothing and having to rebuild her life after 28 years of marriage. She has two daughters that are grown, but each of them are dealing with their own issues (mostly created by their late father). Can they heal and grow together? Read the book!

I asked AI to help me find books similar to a couple of other series I’ve liked. It ended up offering me numerous suggestions for “warm, small-town romances with inns, seaside settings, and heartfelt characters.” Lucky for me this one also leaned more women’s fiction than romance which is also what I really wanted this weekend. I suspended disbelief around a number of things and found this to be a very pleasant read.

Feel good quick summer read albeit predictable at times, I like the fact that after grief Ginny, Chandler and Reece find each other after being apart due to life's circumstances with each of them having their own difficulties to work on.
I will read 'A lighthouse secret' which is the next book in line to the series to find out what direction Reece turns.

First In Lighthouse Cafe

Lovely read of family dynamics and new starts. If you've ever had a broken heart, sisters or dreams, you will relate to the story. One issue I hope gets shared with the author -- Mexico Beach, Apilachicola, etc., is on The Gulf of Mexico, NOT the Atlantic!

Your heart will heal right along with Ginny's

This book has an ever so subtle way of giving hou a smile. I chose the book because I enjoy a series but have found that I love this little place, Sugar Cove, and the unexpected joy it brings this grieving family. What an absolutely beautiful walk through their journey of grief and self discovery!
