2.25. This volume has the Mansion arc. I went in expecting more since I remember it picking up a bit here. I can see why I might've thought that when reading weekly but it still struggles with pacing and just oomph. So much talking happens and events that happen just don't happen quickly. Then in the second half we get Aoba's brother crashing in along with Aoba going insane with his Kasane taking over. It's a neat story moment but lacks oomph with just not letting moments breathe or exist. It all feels very on-rails with little time to really enjoy or vibe with a moment.
We do get some new characters here. The gunman from the very end of last volume comes back with his new gun boot teammate. They're fun enough and can bounce off of the main duo well enough as well. I do enjoy how the four act when it does work but often it really feels like they're just talking to talk or bring up another point or get to another deal. The whole story has this issue with slow pacing, constant dialogue, and struggling to let its fights breathe.
The threat of the Kasane just doesn't ever develop deep enough to be interesting. Their stand-like appearance and floating head schtick is ok but it gets too repetitive. This is an issue because it really is the focus with the narrative throwing everything aside to constantly harp on them when its not that deep in how it executed amd they get treated like monster of the week foes. Near the end we see them possess people and see new half-Kasane half-human forms which do look neat. But it wasn't explored here and iirc it was too late really as he already was probably told to start wrapping up.
I am glad this comes with one of the managaka's oneshots in “Shikigami.” It was alright and definitely seemed to cement this guy is a MegTen fan with the designs looking straight out of it along with the Persona influence seemingly in elements of Shadow Eliminators. It had some decent if hard to read art but wasn't anything standout.
