I received a free copy of A Deadly Legacy, by E. V. Hunter, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is book six in The Hopgood Hall Murder Mysteries series. When Frank Hopgood died, people thought it was a tragic accident, but when his wife shows up wanting her inheritance, Frank's brother, Drew thinks Franks death might not be so accidental. This was a clever read.
I really enjoyed this book! It kept me interested the whole way through, I think mostly because there was just so much going on at all times.
There are a few typos throughout the book, but I don't think it hindered my reading experience at all. There were also a few plot twists that I saw coming, but so many that I didn't. The ones that I never guessed were the ones that really mattered, so I really loved thinking that I got it figured out just to be thrown off by the actual plot twists.
One other issue I had with the book was some of the dialogue felt a little off/old timey, but for a cozy mystery that is okay with me. The characters are fun and very thoughtful, especially all the animals. I loved all the personality that these animals had!
I read this book so fast, and probably would have read it faster if I didn't have to work! I would love to continue on with the series and also read the beginning of the series since I believe this book is the 6th book in the series. With that being said, you obviously don't have to read them in order and this one is a great one, if you don't want to start at the beginning!
This is a new author to me and I hadn’t realized that this is part of a series. I was able to follow along pretty easily as a standalone (there were a few points which reference to a previous event, but that’s okay). A kind of “cozy mystery thriller” that gave me classic vibes. I enjoyed the story, it was fun to sleuth along with the characters.
E.V. Hunter's engrossing murder thriller A Deadly Legacy deftly blends suspense, family drama, and hidden agendas. This charming mystery, which takes place against the evocative backdrop of Hopgood Hall, is ideal for those who like slow-burning thrillers with complex character development since it combines charm and intrigue. Frank Hopgood died tragically during a climbing trip, which was first thought to be a regrettable accident, in the novel's opening pages. But suspicion rises when his young widow Stella shows up at Hopgood Hall wanting her cut of the riches.
Alexi Ellis undertakes the challenge of looking into Stella's background with the help of her partner Jack and their furry friends. They quickly learn that there's more to the story than meets the eye as they delve more into Frank's demise. The story is enhanced by its rich environment, and Hopgood Hall—a place steeped in mystery and familial strife—becomes a vital part of the story. As Alexi and Jack unravel the mystery of Frank's unexpected death and Stella's reasons, Hunter's skill at creating a vivid setting heightens the suspense and holds readers' attention.
While Cosmo the cat and Silgo the pup provides a certain charm that helps to lighten the darker aspects of the mystery, Alexi and Jack's bond lends warmth and relatability to the plot. Hunter expertly blends suspense and character development, giving the investigation a genuine yet methodical atmosphere. The plot moves along at a good clip and is kept interesting by the slow building tension and surprising turns.
All things considered, A Deadly Legacy strikes the ideal balance between atmosphere, character depth, and twists. Readers who appreciate cozy mysteries and vintage whodunits will find this well-written, character-driven story to be quite enjoyable. For those who enjoy a deep and captivating mystery, this narrative is a must-read since it combines humor, suspense, and familial intrigue.

This is another thrilling page-turner by E V Hunter that brings Jack Maddox and Alexi Ellis back for another compelling mystery of the Hopgood Hall Murder series. This time, the stakes are high, as the duo finds themselves entangled in a web of secrets, deception, and fortune-hunting. The atmosphere is tense and immersive, with every chapter revealing twists that keep readers guessing. Jack's sharp wit and Alexi's fierce determination are perfectly complemented by their furry sidekicks, Silgo and Cosmo, who add a lighthearted touch amidst the suspense. Hunter masterfully balances intrigue and suspense, making this a must-read for anyone who loves the continuation of these classic whodunit series.
Frank Hopgood who had disappeared for sometime to Australia returns with his much younger bride, Stella, who is English and who had been living in Australia, once married to Frank had decided on their return to England. Frank it seems, with the help of his new wife, has depleted all his inheritance from his share of Hopgood Hall estate.
While investigating Frank’s untimely death, it seems, however, as Jack and Alexi discover from his old friends and climbing mates that he had changed a lot, no longer the dynamic personality. He was an experienced climber but with his death due to a fall, suspicions are raised, particularly when fortune hunting widow Stella, arrives at Hopgood Hall to extort and claim her widow's rights from Drew and Cheryl Hopgood.
Hopgood Hall is an expensive operation, expenditure is kept in check and while Drew and Cheryl are in no doubt that Frank's share was correct, due to no official documentation signed by Drew and him, legal opinion is sought regarding Stella's claim. Jack's and Alexi's thoughts are now of a mind to look into Stella and her past. The more they pursue this line of investigation the more of an enigma she becomes. They also investigate further into Frank's past, his love of horses and his past love life. Nothing much is revealed but they feel that a lot is not being said.
Switching back to Stella, they interview an old boss of her’s, who after their affair had finished was glad to see the back of her but on returning to England it seems, she had put her hand up for the same contract that he was pursuing. He reveals a lot about her personality and unforgiving nature as well as enlightening them of Stella's ability as a competent climber. This changes the investigation. Jack and Alexi now have Stella firmly in their sights for the murder of Frank. Plans are made for Drew to meet up with her for which will be closely monitored. However, a phone call prior to the arrangement sees Drew in Stella's apartment where he discovers her dead body.
The plot thickens with more questions than answers and it takes sometime before all is revealed.
I thought this was another good book in this series. It’s a well thought out plot and mystery. There were a few surprises along the way. It was fun to see the two fur babies doing their part in helping solve the mystery. Looking forward to the next one
When Drew’s brother Frank died in a climbing accident, they were surprised but assumed it was an accident. However, when his much younger and highly ambitious wife, Stella, arrives to demand a share in the Hopgood Hall, they are immediately suspicious. Drew and Cheryl ask Alexi and Jack to take up the case. Alexi and Jack already planned to work on it and were happy to dig deeper.
With new truths emerging, it becomes clear that there are a handful of suspects, and nothing everything is as it seems. With Drew getting into an unwanted complication, can Alexi and Jack save their friends in time?
The story comes in Alexi and Jack’s third-person POVs.
My Thoughts:
Though this is the sixth book in the series, it should work as a standalone (unlike the previous two books that focused on Alexi and Jack’s personal lives). While this deals with Drew’s personal life, it is pretty independent.
As if Cosmo wasn’t enough, A & J now have Silgo, a huge doggy of mixed breed. Needless to say, these two have taken over the backseat of their car and are ready to save Alexi if necessary. Cosmo is, of course, not going to let people walk away without looking at him.
Given the premise, this one combines a bit of family drama and a good load of mystery. As always, the plot starts simple but develops into something layered and intricate. Yet, nowhere does it feel confusing. It is not unbelievable either and ties well with the character arcs. Different threads come together to create a complete picture.
There are enough suspects, so it took me some time to guess. Some of them are a bit flat but do the job they are supposed to do. I wish we see Stella in action a little more rather than just read about her.
There isn’t any new development in the personal track between Alexi and Jack but it is not necessary here. They have an understanding and already work well as a team.
It gets a bit repetitive when Alexi is the only one rushing into danger, so maybe we could change that next? Give Jack some action and a chance to showcase his moves. ;)
To summarize, A Deadly Legacy is intriguing and is a good mystery to read when traveling or relaxing. The pacing is not fast but settles into a good rhythm.
Thank you, Rachel’s Random Resources and Boldwood Books, for eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
A Deadly Legacy by E.V. Hunter is a thrilling, page-turning ride that expertly blends mystery, history, and intrigue. Hunter has crafted a narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end, weaving a complex story that is as intellectually stimulating as it is entertaining.

Hunter's attention to detail in depicting different time periods adds an additional layer of authenticity to the story, making the historical aspects as engaging as the contemporary ones.

The dialogue is natural and dynamic, revealing character nuances and advancing the plot effectively. The setting, whether it’s an ancient mansion or a bustling city, is described with such precision that it feels almost cinematic.

Name of Book: A Deadly Legacy Author: E.V. Hunter Series: Hopgood Hall Mystery #5 Publisher: Boldwood Books Genre: Cozy Mystery Pub Date: November 19, 2024 My Rating: 4 Stars Pages: 282
This is #5 in this series. Cheryl’s brother-in-law, Frank died in a climbing accident. Anyone who knows Frank knows how careful he always is. This time he was climbing an area that has sandstone rock so gear is not allowed only free-climbing. Frank was found at the bottom of the Harrison’s Rocks. Everyone assumed his fall was a tragic accident. Although Frank is only in his forties, his wife Stella North is much younger and makes a surprise visit and announces they have ’stuff’ to talk about. She tells them that Frank wanted to resume his role in Hopgood Hall. They tell her that Frank was not interested in restoring Hopgood Hall- which was in need of repairs. Although Drew really couldn’t afford it but he did buy out his older brother’s share. She claims that Frank told her he had been negotiating and now she wants her half of Frank’s inheritance. Her visit seems suspicious and creates wonder if Frank’s death was really an accident.
Alexi Ellis, her partner Jack Maddox, and of course Cosmo, her feral cat, and Silgo her faithful dog of questionable pedigree, decide to check into Stella’s background. Did she meet him when he lived in Australia? If so, why? Since she is from the UK ~ hmm
Their investigation finds out far more about Stella than I imagined!! This was another great E V Hunter cozy. I am aware that there are mystery fans who stay away from cozy mysteries as they believe a cozy is way too mellow. I am a big Psychological Thriller fan and trust me EV Hunter’s Cozy Mysteries are NOT typical - not that a Cozy Mystery isn’t great but they do follow a bit of a formula. This series does not follow a formula no typical characterization.
I read and enjoyed other books in this series so was delighted when I saw this was available. Yep! I was looking forward to this story!
Want to thank NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this early eGalley. Publishing Release Date scheduled for November 19, 2024.
Mystery surrounds the death of Drew’s brother Frank. An experienced climber, very strangely he went out alone and then fell to his death. But was it really an accident as everyone thought it was? When their parents died, Frank wanted his money out and Drew was forced to take out a hefty loan to pay Frank for his half of the inheritance of Hopgood Hall so that Drew and Cheryl could keep the family home and turn it into the successful boutique hotel they finally run. Frank went off to Australia to make his fortune and there met and married Stella, a hardnosed woman half his age who kept Frank away from Drew. Now Stella has turned up at Hopgood demanding money she claims Frank was underpaid. Cosmo hates Stella on sight, and that’s good enough reason for Alexi and Jack to doubt Stella’s motives. As they dig deeper, they discover some very alarming facts about this gold digger. Does she want to be back in Lambourn for another reason and did Frank simply outlive his usefulness, literally falling victim to a woman whose own family suspect of killing her mother? In their bid to save Hopgood from her clutches, will they be able to unravel Stella’s lies and prove any of this? Just as they are getting into their investigation, events take a shocking turn as another murder is discovered and Jack’s old friend DI Mark Vickery makes a welcome appearance but will their combined forces be enough to reveal the truth? Readers of the previous five stories will be very familiar with the main characters, and until Stella’s arrival the future was looking good with Cheryl expecting a second baby, and newly rescued dog Silgo becoming part of Jack and Alexi’s family alongside Cosmo, a cat with great attitude and an unnerving ability to judge character and deal with anyone he dislikes very well indeed! PI Jack and journalist Alexi make a great team with their respective skills to get to the root of events, backed up by Jack’s business partner Cassie when anything IT based is required. Once again this is a great twisty story with plenty of surprises, secrets and red herrings to confuse the reader. I do hope there’s more to come!
This sixth installment proves that skillful writing and strong characterization can welcome readers at any point in a series' journey. While seasoned fans might catch subtle references to previous adventures, the author has crafted a self-contained narrative that stands confidently on its own merits.
The protagonist and supporting cast shine through their authentic interactions and well-developed personalities. Rather than falling into common genre tropes of damaged detectives or dysfunctional relationships, these characters showcase refreshing emotional intelligence and healthy interpersonal dynamics. The dialogue crackles with wit and natural humor, making the characters feel like people you'd genuinely want to know.
A particularly endearing aspect is the inclusion of animal companions. The "furry pals" aren't mere accessories but integral members of the cast, adding both charm and occasional comic relief without overshadowing the main narrative. Their presence helps ground the human characters and provides moments of warmth between the mystery's tenser sequences.
The mystery itself is masterfully constructed, maintaining a perfect balance between complexity and plausibility. The author respects the reader's intelligence by laying out genuine clues while avoiding the twin pitfalls of either making the solution too obvious or resorting to outlandish twists. The narrative grips you from the opening pages and maintains its momentum throughout, making it difficult to put down.
While this is the sixth book in an ongoing series, it serves as an excellent entry point for new readers. The author skillfully weaves in minimal necessary background information without resorting to clunky exposition. References to past events feel natural and add depth for longtime readers without confusing newcomers.
I would absolutely recommend this book and am looking forward to reading more by this author.
A Deadly Legacy is the sixth Hopgood Hall cozy by E.V. Hunter. Released 19th Nov 2024 by small press indie Boldwood Books, it's 282 pages and is available in hardcover, paperback, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free. The other books are also available on KU.
This is a well written, engaging, and finely constructed amateur sleuth mystery pairing a former investigative journalist (and boutique hotel co-owner) with her handsome PI partner investigating a climbing fall/questionable death. There's a strong side element of romance, so readers who prefer romance in their cozies will likely enjoy that aspect of the story. The characters are well rendered and mostly believable and the pacing and plot are well done and the denouement and resolution of the various plot threads are satisfyingly wrapped up by the end of the book. It's a continuing series, so if read out of order, some of the character developments and relationships will be spoiled, but otherwise it works fine as a standalone.
Spelling and vernacular are British standard English, but won't pose a problem for readers in context.
Four stars. A fun continuation of a nice light series. With six books extant in the series, it would make a good choice for a long binge or buddy read.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
A Deadly Legacy by E.V. Hunter is a delightful addition to the Hopgood Hall Murder Mysteries, offering a cozy yet suspenseful investigation filled with family drama and complex character motives. This time, Hopgood Hall’s owners, Drew and Cheryl, are mourning Drew's brother Frank, who died in what seemed to be a tragic climbing accident. However, the plot thickens when Frank's new and enigmatic young wife, Stella, returns from Australia with demands that threaten the Hopgoods' legacy.
Hunter masterfully balances intrigue with a touch of lightheartedness, largely thanks to former journalist Alexi Ellis and her private investigator partner, Jack Maddox, who are quick to sense something amiss with Stella’s intentions. As they dig deeper, they uncover layers of mystery surrounding Frank's life in Australia, his relationship with Stella, and whether his death was indeed an accident. Jack and Alexi’s sleuthing, supported by their faithful companions, Cosmo the cat and Silgo the rescue dog, keeps the pace lively and engaging.
The story’s setting, the evocative Hopgood Hall, adds a sense of nostalgia and timelessness, enhancing the suspense as Jack and Alexi delve into secrets and possible motives. Stella’s character is refreshingly complex and unpredictable, adding an edge to the story as she becomes increasingly untrustworthy. The twists are perfectly timed, keeping readers guessing until the final reveal, with red herrings that make this cozy mystery as thrilling as it is charming.
For fans of character-driven mysteries and vintage whodunits with a modern twist, A Deadly Legacy offers an entertaining journey into a world of hidden agendas and deep-rooted family secrets. Thank you to Boldwood Books, NetGalley, and E.V. Hunter for this ARC in exchange for my honest review
A Deadly Legacy is a cosy murder mystery set in the traditional olde English countryside. Jack Maddox and Alexi Ellis investigate the death of Frank Hopgood, brother of Drew who owns Hopgood Hall. The book gives off "Tommy & Tuppence" vibes as one interview leads to another with a few surprises along the way.
I struggled to get into the story with plenty of references to the history of Hopgood Hall and Alexi and Jack now being a well-known journalist and investigators. This is the sixth book in the series after all, and my first introduction into the world. This is not the one I'd recommend starting with.
I found the story lacked any substance to begin with. Franks wife, Stella causes a scene at his funeral demanding money from Drew (Franks brother) claiming he hadn't received a fair sum for his share in the hotel. On the back of this, Jack and Alexi begin looking into Stella's background.
Who is Stella? How did she and Frank meet in Australia and what are Stella's ties to the local area? Did she marry Frank for his money and then demand Drew for more because it had all ran out? The investigation obviously turns towards Franks death which has been previously ruled a climbing accident.
Jack and Alexi take Cosmo the Cat and Silgo the Dog along with them to every interview. This added a certain amount of charm but thankfully didn't fall into the trap of other cosy mysteries in having them help solve the crimes!
Overall, the plot comes together nicely if not a little too conveniently at the end with the reveal of key pieces of evidence to unlock the whole mystery. Worth a read.
I would like to convey my thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read this novel. All opinions are my own.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and E.V. Hunter for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for A Deadly Legacy coming out November 19, 2024. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.

But when Frank’s much younger wife, Stella arrives at Hopgood Hall demanding half of Frank’s inheritance the Hopgoods and Alexi Ellis begin to suspect foul play... Stella has no claim to Frank’s legacy, but she isn’t giving up easily. And with the reputation of Hopgood Hall still fragile, Alexi can’t afford to lose any more money because of Stella’s greed.
So Alexi, her partner Jack, and Cosmo of course, decide to dig deeper into Stella’s background. Just how did she meet Frank and were they really as in love as she claims?
As the trio investigate, they discover Stella has her own reasons for being back at Hopgood Hall. And rather than console the grieving widow, Alexi and Jack think they might need to look again at Frank’s tragic death – because rather than an accident this could have been a deadly fall – planned by his own wife!
I haven’t read the other books in the series, but I received this directly from NetGalley. I really love murder mysteries. It’s one of my favorite genres. I think the characters were really complex. There was a lot of family drama going on. Alexi and Jack were fun characters. I really enjoyed the mystery. It reminded me of old whodunits. I would read other books by this author!
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys murder mysteries!

There’s more trouble at Hopgood Hall in the irresistible new cosy crime novel by E V Hunter, A Deadly Legacy.
Tragedy strikes when Frank, Drew Hopgood’s brother, dies in a climbing accident. His death is initially thought to have been a tragic accident – until Frank’s younger wife Stella turns up at Hopgood Hall demanding half of his inheritance! The Hopgoods and Alexi Ellis begin to suspect that there might have been more to Frank’s death than meets the eye and realise that they might have to once again do some sleuthing of their own…
With Hopgood Hall’s fragile reputation to protect, Alexi, Jack and Cosmo start looking into Stella’s past – and what they discover has them wondering whether Stella might have had direct involvement in Frank’s sudden death. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Deadly Legacy is the next installment of the Hopgood Hall Murder Mystery cozy series. When Drew's brother is in a fatal climbing accident, Drew and Cheryl are faced with an angry and bitter widow who insists she has a right to part of Hopgood Hall. Once Alexi and Jack start digging into Stella's background, they realize there is much more to her and Frank's story, and, unfortunately, they realize Frank's death was likely not an accident. When another body is discovered and Drew is setup to take the fall, Alexi and Jack are forced into a race against the clock to save their friend from prison and ensure a murderer faces justice.
I absolutely love the characters and the setting of this series. I so want to stay at Hopgood Hall and eat at Maurice's restaurant! I also enjoy the friendship between Drew, Cheryl, Alexi, and Jack, and, of course, I adore the pets, especially Cosmo and Silgo (a great new addition). The only issue I have with some of the books in this series, including A Deadly Leagacy, is that some of the mysteries are a bit too convoluted for a cozy. There were a few too many twists to this mystery that made it unbelievable. I feel the whole situation under the pier could have been left out and the mystery would still have been just as intriguing. Nevertheless, I will absolutely continue with this series, and I can't wait to see what Alexi, Cosmo, and crew get up to next!
The story starts about a month after the death of Frank, Drew’s brother. Cheryl is grieving and lamenting what an unlikeable person the widow is. Then in comes the widow and informs them of Frank’s wishes regarding the hotel.
I’m not immediately charmed by the characters. Drew, Cheryl, Alexi and Jack are all very hostile towards Stella. My empathy actually lies with her. It’s the first in the series for me, and that means characters have to start out likeable (and not hostile and judgmental) for me to like them. Would have helped greatly if Stella’s earlier behaviour had been shown rather than told, and everyone was nice and open minded towards her, but she just made it really hard to keep that up.
Without that background the main characters just seem unsympathetic.
Jack and Alexi set out to investigate Stella’s background. What they find is that Stella is a token evil person. The only reason she’s not twirrling a moustache, is because she is a beautiful woman and doesn’t have facial hair.
Stopped reading at 42%. Stella’s been killed and despite the round the clock survaillance Jack put on the flat she’d been staying, Jack and Alexi still need 150 pages to solves this murder. And I simply don’t care that one of their friends is a possible suspect. I actually like him to be detained by the police for a while.
In the latest Hopgood Hall cozy mystery series, readers appear shortly after Frank Hopgood’s death while climbing, but when his wife Stella appears at Hopgood Hall demanding half of Frank’s inheritance, readers -- and Alexi Ellis -- begin to suspect that perhaps Frank’s death was not the tragic accident it first seemed to be. While Stella has no claim to Frank’s inheritance and Alexi cannot risk losing more money, Alexi, Jack, and Cosmo have to dig into Stella’s background and her marriage to Frank to see if the story and the death hold up to scrutiny. As the case unfolds and Stella’s secrets appear, readers join Alexi and Jack on this new investigation and must discover what this means for Stella and Hopgood Hall’s future. With two excellent lead detectives, a strong suspect in Stella, and a murder mystery to solve, readers will love this cozy mystery set at an elegant country house. The characters are the star of the novel and really bring the mystery to life, and readers will love the world that Hunter continues to explore. With a unique and clever mystery that will keep readers on the edges of their seats, the latest Hopgood Hall mystery is a great continuation of the series.
Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the advance copy.
I’m always on the lookout for some new cosy crime, so when the opportunity to read A Deadly Legacy came my way, I was pleased.
A Deadly Legacy isn’t as cosy as my usual favourites, but I still really enjoyed it. I liked the characters, though I don’t feel like I know them really well (which usually takes multiple books). The slightly unusual pets were a fun touch.
The mystery itself was really interesting, and seemed almost insoluble at first glance. However, Jack and Alexi obviously have well established methods of finding things out, and I had fun being along for the ride.
I read this book without reading any of the previous books in the series, but it works well as a standalone. It has its own story that is complete in itself, and manages to introduce the characters well, without spending too much time and annoying readers who started at the beginning. It’s that there are aspects that develop from book to book, but these do not detract from the enjoyment of the story.
Overall, this was a good mystery, and kept me interested all the way through. I’d recommend it.
I was given a copy of this book, my opinions are my own.
I'm reviewing this via NetGalley, as part of a tour with Rachel's Random Resources.
This is a Hopgood Hall mystery, and I have read some of the previous books in the series. I haven't read any of this series for a while, though, so I was looking forward to this one.
When Frank tragically loses his life in a climbing accident, his family want to make absolutely certain that it was an accident. They have some suspicions about his new wife, Stella. Alexi and Jack decide to investigate.
The characters were fun to read about, and while the writing was lighthearted, there was an element of suspense that kept me guessing as well. I enjoyed how Jack and Alexi worked together, and how they interacted with the other characters. I've read some of the previous books in the series, but not all, and while this worked well as a standalone, I think it could motivate me to catch up on the rest of the series. It was an entertaining mystery with interesting characters, and once I'd finished it, I felt as though I wanted to read another one.
Thank you to NetGalley, Rachel's Random Resources, Boldwood Books, and to the author, for the opportunity to read and review this.
When Drew Hopgood’s brother, Frank, dies in a climbing accident, his young wife, Stella, shocks the family by demanding half his inheritance. Suspicious of her intentions, Alexi Ellis and her partner Jack investigate Stella’s background, uncovering secrets that cast doubt on her claims of love and grief. As they delve deeper, they begin to suspect Frank’s death was no accident but a deadly plan orchestrated by Stella herself. It is always an interesting thing to jump into the middle of a series. I have not read anything by this author before, but the premise sounded interesting. Alexi and Jack were interesting characters, each with strengths to solve the mystery in front of them.
The mystery was laid out well, and I liked how they followed each clue that came their way. A few times I found some of the phrases they used odd, but I think they must have been British-isms, or something of the sort. Previous cases are mentioned, but it wasn’t difficult for a new reader to follow along.
Overall, this was an interesting mystery. Readers who enjoy cozy mysteries will enjoy this one. I received an advance reader copy via NetGalley and all options expressed are my own.
Hopgood Hall has finally become the success its owners Drew Hopgood, wife Cheryl and investor Alexi planned it to be. The boutique hotel that has overcome its reputation as a place murders happen now is threatened by a family member. Stella, the widow of Drew’s brother, is demanding half ownership of the hotel, based on what can only be creative lies. Alexi and her partner Jack quickly decide to help by investigating Stella. Could she be responsible for Frank’s death? Their investigation leads them back to events from decades ago, events that led to murder then and now and may put their lives in danger.
A Deadly Legacy is the newest entry in the excellent Hopgood Hall series. The main characters acquire more depth with each entry, especially Drew, Cheryl, Alexi and Jack. Pets Cosmo and Silgo deserve mention as their personalities add humor to the plot. Who can resist the friendship between a feral cat and an abused former guard dog? I am looking forward to the next in this delightful series
Thank you to NetGalley, Boldwood Books and E.V. Hunter fr this ARC.
'A Deadly Legacy' by E.V. Hunter. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I enjoyed this book. There was a lot of little plots that didn't seem like they were connected but then the author tied them all up towards the end in a lovely little murdeous bow. If I was going to go into the private detective business I would definitely have Silgo and Cosmo as my back up, they're amazing. It was a good whodunit with plenty of little mysteries to try and figure out for yourself. I would recommend this to fans of cozy crime and puzzles.
A tragic accident or an untimely death? When Drew Hopgood’s brother, Frank dies whilst out climbing, it’s initially thought his death was simply a tragic accident. A boutique hotel. A feral cat. A recipe for murder!
A Deadly Legacy by E.V. Hunter is a cozy mystery and the sixth installment in the "A Hopgood Hall Murder Mystery" series.
In this story, our main characters, Jack Maddox and Alexi Ellis, are tasked with investigating the mysterious "death" of Frank Hopgood, Drew Hopgood's brother. From the start, they focus on a prime suspect, seeking proof and motives. However, a shocking event forces them to broaden their investigation, uncovering multiple suspects and potential motives. Slowly but surely, they unravel the truth and manage to save their best friends from danger.
Fans of cozy mysteries will find much to love in this installment. The plot is engaging, with well-developed world-building and a steady narrative pace. Despite the numerous twists, the investigation remains easy to follow thanks to the author's clear and concise writing. Jack and Alexi make a fantastic detective duo, with Alexi playing a crucial role alongside the more assertive Jack. My favorite moment was when the furry friends came to the rescue!
Overall, A Deadly Legacy is a must-read for lovers of the cozy mystery genre.
This is the sixth book in the Hopgood Hall mystery series. I was a little lost at the very beginning with references to previous adventures but it did not take long to be caught up in the current mystery. I think one could easily enjoy this book without having read the previous ones.
We readers follow Alexi and Jack as they uncover past events and relationships. The more they learn the more motives and possible suspects come to light. While the plot moves along at a decent pace, there is much discussion between the two regarding the possible meaning of what they have found. There is generally no suspense until a quick bit near the end.
I like the character development but my favorite ones by far are Silgo and Cosmo. Every amateur sleuth should have such loyal protectors, each with an attitude. Their presence added to an already enjoyable cozy mystery.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
This sixth installment demonstrates that skillful writing and well-developed characters can capture readers' attention no matter where they are in the series. The plot is intricately crafted, featuring several unexpected twists that keep you guessing. It was a joy to see how the two furry companions contributed to unraveling the mystery.
“A Deadly Legacy” masterfully strikes a balance between atmosphere, character depth, and unexpected plot twists. Readers who appreciate cozy mysteries and classic whodunits will find this engaging and well-crafted, character-driven tale highly enjoyable. It’s a must-read for anyone in search of a rich and compelling mystery, as it artfully weaves together humor, suspense, and family intrigue. I'm excited for the next installment! I was fortunate enough to receive an Advanced Reading Copy of this book. A huge thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for this opportunity!
This is the first Hopgood Hall mystery I have read, despite it being the sixth, and I would probably recommend reading books 1-5 first as the characters here already appear to be fully established and well-developed in their personalities and their relationships.
Main characters Alexi and Jack, as a journalist and PI/ex-police officer respectively, make a perfect investigative partnership – very much Tommy and Tuppence vibes! – and the active pet participation is a fun, light-hearted bonus (if a little far-fetched at points).
The story and style definitely reminded me of classic Christie-era crime novels but set in more modern times and the plot kept me guessing, with plenty of red herrings, twists and peril along the way, and Cosmo and Sligo add some necessary touches of both cosy cuteness and light humour.
This cosy mystery is clever, twisty and playful, and I recommend it to any cosy mystery fans looking for a new series to binge-read.
Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the ARC.
I’m not really sure what I’m going to rate this book. I did not realize when I got this ARC that it was the 6th book in the series so there were lots of little hints to other books that I did not get, but anyway.
I really enjoyed this little cozy mystery. I really loved the little rag tag group of characters that include a dog and a cat that help their owners solve mysteries. I really liked this storyline and I honestly did not see the who done it coming until I got to the end of the story. I really liked Jack and Alexi’s romance, even though I know it wasn’t always a romance, but I still really enjoyed it. I liked the little hints from the other books, even if I didn’t understand the references. Overall a great addition the this cozy series (I think cozy.)
