Come what may! Come what may!”

An immersive read that took me deep - to the deep seas and deep inside myself.

Author, Christopher A. Hostettler, has a writing style that’s reminiscent of days gone bye. While reading, I often felt like the book was written during the earliest days of the Victorian period or perhaps a bit earlier. This is especially true of the four pieces that are poetry.

Hostettler provides a very detailed introduction, setting the stage for readers and posing questions to guide their thinking while experiencing the story within the poetry. I read the four poems thru for pure enjoyment, the first time, finding the meter, rhythm and rhymes to be effortless; high praise for this classically trained musician!

Following the four poems are four commentaries on them by the author. He delves into the questions posed in the introduction. At times he quotes scripture and posts some under the stunning, themed artwork. All references are in either the NIV or King James versions. The artwork is also reminiscent of the 19th century time period in the style of J. M. W. Turner and Winslow Homer.

Themes are deep and personal, if readers choose to answer the questions in a personal way: redemption, faith, love, parental relationships, and so much more.

The book closes with a 4 page, very short story about a man who is completely overwhelmed by life. He has three visions that include spirits from the Netherworld; another venture into death and dying, hope and promises. It feels dark until you read the two brief poems.

For sure, one of the most tho’t provoking reads in recent years. This was a bit of well written, heavy lifting for my heart and soul📚

I enjoyed reading this collection of related poems. The commentary was a blessing in adding insight to the authors story. I like that he didn't paint a fairy tale positivity into every aspect of his story. It truly is the hardships that mold our lives for the glory of God.

Inspiring

In these poems, author Chris Hostettler would inspire the reader to "live a life worth living, fight a fight worth fighting, and die a death worth dying." If his reach exceeds his grasp, that's a good thing. As Browning reminds us, that should always be true, "or what's a heaven for?" The author's faith shines through the imagery of his poetry and his commentary on their meaning. I'm certain that I'll return to this volume again and again in my own quest to become "a most dangerous man" of faith and vision.
