Dis exists in silent rage. His human life was taken by a paranoid vampire and the centuries since have been spent in bloody darkness. He is a vampire, but he is a slave. He doesn’t let himself think or want. He survived on instinct until Beo. She liberates his body, but ensnares his heart. She is both more alive and more powerful than any being he has ever known. But will she be commanding ally or another master to enslave him?
Originally from rural West Virginia, B.C. currently lives in Tennessee with her husband. She studied architecture and landscape architecture, earning degrees in both. She loves creativity in all its forms: art, music, literature, etc. B.C. has always enjoyed storytelling, but until recently never put one of her stories to paper. Writing began as a way to relax during graduate school. No one knew she was writing until her first novel, Solstice Night was under contract. She writes stories that she would enjoy reading, such as fantasy, sci-fi, mystery and paranormal romance. Now working full-time, B.C. still finds time to write every day...well, almost.
WOW! Solstice Night was nothing at all what I expected. It was so much more. From the first chapter the depth of the characters gripped me. Dis is an extremely lovable but broken hero. Different from other books, Beo (our heroine) frees Dis from his bonds of slavery. After years of torment at the hands of his evil master Dis slays him the first chance he gets. The result of killing his master leaves him with the claim of vampire chieftain of Detroit. While embracing his new freedom he's drawn to Beo, she's more than human, but doesn't even know what she is. All Dis knows is that she's the light to his dark and together they are complete.
While trying to control the chaos that's become Detroit Dis and Beo join forces with a group of very intriguing characters; ranging from weres, vamps, and humans with a little extra to offer.
Yes, it's a story about taking control and keeping balance of the city, but mostly it's a story about a group of supernatural beings dealing with very human emotions. Coming together as friends and lovers their goal is to overcome evil and live a peaceful existence.
I'm not sure I can do justice to Solstice Night. The best I can do is highly praise it for the wonderful book it is and hope others will find it as enthralling as I did.
Although, there are strong paranormal and romantic elements I feel that adult readers of all genres will enjoy what Ms. Sirrom has to offer. I look forward to reading her future endeavors.
New Review after finishing the book So after posting my original review in which I gave up after ½ the story (which you can read below), the author indicated that she did not feel I should rate the book as I did not finish it, after all it was provided for free with the intent to give an honest review (which I gave for the first half of the book). The person that initiated the review requested that I finish the book as they felt the author was right, if I am going to review a book I should finish it. I would like to make one point before I go on, I never once said the book was bad, I said “this one is just not for me” and I gave my reasons why. It’s not like I only read 10 pages and gave up, if that were the case I would never have attached a rating to the book. So, after the request to finish the book, I picked it up again when I got home form work after all there are only 77 pages left at this point how hard can it be…..
3½ hours later……. In this world a vampires maker is an “impetus” and they are in “broods” and “clutches” my simple brain has a hard time with “his impetus was gone” , or “he is my impetus” it does not flow right or sound right to me…then with “broods” and “clutches” I am thinking of farm animals, purses and automobile parts….see how my mind wanders when I am not enjoying my reading material….
At the end of the remaining 77 pages I was bored, I did not care that Beo was . I did not care about all the hook ups between the other characters. I did not care that the evil was destroyed and the good prevailed. There were to many side stories and meandering of the main yet vague story line. I was bored while reading and will reiterate that “this is just not for me” it may work for you it may not but I am sticking with my one star rating
Original Review - when it was a DNF This one was just not for me. I made it about 1/2 way and that took almost 2 days...normally a book of this length (if it like it) would be read in a couple of hours. The synopsis does not really give any information about the book or what the story line is....while reading you really don't have any idea what the story line is other then Beo is really, really old and powerful...oh and she is not a vampire. It may have eventually picked up and answered some of those questions but at this point having no investment in any of the characters and not really caring what happens I decided to quit.
An e-copy was provided to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.
In full disclosure I will say it has been awhile since I've read any type of vampire/werewolf book. Sure I have some favorite authors that I will always go back to when there is an addition to a series but in all honesty, I usually avoid these types of books these days. I feel that the craze is over and instead of retelling the same story over and over, please just move on. Also, B.C. Sirrom is a new author for me. When I was finally able to find a blurb describing the book, I decided that I would probably enjoy the story and I did. So I want to stress that I went into this with an open mind.
I read the book and I can say that I did like it. Was there anything different in regards to the vamps and werewolves as compared to other books? Not really though the cast of characters pretty much made up for that. The premise of the story was actually unique as well.
This starts with a quick prologue that was quite nice though I am having a difficult time understanding how that played into the story as a whole. That could simply be the fact that I was looking for something that was not there or that I missed it completely. It doesn't matter either way as the story played out well.
Dis is a vampire slave and has been for centuries. I immediately liked him. He's dark and brooding and the author did a good job describing his anger and his dark personality. He works as a bartender for his master, Michael, in a club that does much more than serve drinks and play music. Beo walks into the club and insists (to Dis) on meeting with Michael. Dis is instantly attracted to Beo but knows that she is so far out of his league. A beautiful woman would never show any interest in a slave. Once Beo is taken by Dis to see Michael is when the story begins. Beo is much more than a beautiful woman. She's not a vampire or a were but she is extremely powerful and she proves this during the meeting. Afterward, she frees Dis from his slavery which also adds another layer to her power. Dis destroys his former master (Michael) and as a result is made the vampire chief of Detroit whether he wants that title or not. Dis, even knowing that he is not worthy, is drawn to Beo and she is drawn to him. Their love story was written quite well. She is this "other" (which is explained much later in the book) and he is a former slave yet their relationship works. There are a few very touching scenes in regards to it. I have absolutely no complaint at all in regards to the love story aspect of this book... the one between Dis and Beo. I did, however, get confused in regards to other couples in the story. They were not the main characters so it did not detract from my feelings as a whole.
Dis and Beo team up with a unique cast of characters to try to stem the chaos which is sure to occur as a result of Dis becoming the chief. There are more vampires, a few humans, an interesting family of werewolves and my personal favorite, Kaph, a 4-year-old vampire. Kaph is not actually four, but he was when he was turned so he kept that personality. He is adorable. I am a sucker for books with kids in them and I absolutely fell in love with this child. From his silly, childlike antics to the way that he dressed. Throughout the story I was looking forward to seeing what he would do next.
I can't go into much more of this story without giving spoilers and I would prefer not to do that in this case.
The copy I received had some major editing issues. After speaking with the author I now know that the book was tweaked before actual publication so I am going to assume that these issues were resolved. Did it take away from the story? Not really though I did find myself having to go back a few times to reread certain sections. It did not take away from the story as a whole.
This was an enjoyable read. There are a few questions that were left unanswered but some are addressed in Chaos Children, a short follow-up story that I read immediately after finishing this one. As mentioned above, I got a tad confused in regards to certain relationships. At times I had to go back to try to figure out who was who and who was supposed to get together or who it looked like would get together, etc.
Overall, a good first novel. This was initially going to get 3.5 stars but I had to up it for Kaph alone.
A big thanks to the author for giving me the opportunity to read something I might not have otherwise. I enjoyed it.
My thoughts Solstice Night has everything you want in a paranormal romance. It is written fast paced with action, love, and paranormal beings like vampires, empaths and werewolves. And all those elements are wrapped in an exiting story that I had troubles with, putting down.
Solstice Night is about Beo. She is a 14.000 year something. Not a vampire or Demon but a paranormal someting that is strange enough to exists for all those years. When she is on a journey to warn someone, she meets the man of her life- the mute Canis and frees him from the hands of his evil vampire master. That results that Canis takes revenge by slaying his Ex-master and becoming the new vampire-chief of Detroit. While finding out who initially wanted to kill his master, Canis (now called Dis) finds himself drawn to Beo. Even he doesn't know what she is, but except her as she is.
I look forward to read more about Beo. I didn't know which character I liked better, Beo or Dis. Both main characters are written with great emotion and depth with both there own story/history that made them who they are now. If your a fan or Chicagoland Vampires or the books written by Ilona Andrews you definitely going to enjoy this book from (for me a new author) B.C. Sirrom. ... p.s. I really have to ask her first name because writing the name B.C. Sirrom really sucks in a review, now i know how many times i actually want to use the name of the author :)
This is not the type of book I would normally have picked, but I wasn't disappointed with it. Considering that this was the author's first book, I would say it was a very good book. My favorite character other than Beo was Kaph. Normally a kiddie vampire would freak me out a little, but Kaph was just adorable and the fact that he was the linchpin in the odd little group of Beo's just added to his charm.
I also enjoyed the power struggle angle but felt that I would've enjoyed the book more if the other characters were developed a little more individually and as couples.
Overall this was a good book and I'd recommend it was a good intro into the Vampire sub genre.
This book has been given to me by the author for an honest review
I really didn’t know what to expect from this book, because I haven’t heard about it before, but I truly enjoyed it. Very different from other books in this genre, the story kept my interest from the beginning until the end.
Dis is a broken hero. Definitely amazing, but broken nevertheless. After many years of slavery he is free from his evil master but he finds himself in another kind of bond with the woman who is responsible for his freedom. Although Beo isn’t a human, she doesn’t know what she truly is, only that she has great powers. Soon, both of them with a group of vampires, werewolves and humans, are trying to survive and take control of the city.
I liked the writing style of the author. The story is fast-paced, the characters definitely unique and the plot very interesting.
Dis was my favorite in the story and one of the most well-written characters in this book. My opinion is that he never was just a slave. He was always powerful but he didn’t have the motivation to show his strength before. He’s kind of a dark character but he is also a fighter.
Beo is one of the weirdest characters in a paranormal romance series. A beautiful and powerful woman with a very sad past. I admit that when I read about her past I cried for what happened to her. She is what Dis needs and she is a woman who needs to love and be loved.
I really don’t want to write for the other characters in this story because I don’t want to write any spoilers, but I want to say that Kaph is the one that I liked more from the secondary characters although sometimes it was sad to read about a four-years-old vampire.
So, this was a very nice read that I enjoyed very much. My only complaint is that I would prefer it to be a longer story. I am sure all the fans of this genre will enjoy this story!
