The Magi Accounts #3

A Purpose That Restores Us

Rate this book
Dark witches here, bloody witches there, evil witches everywhere.

At home, my life is amazing, thanks to my boyfriend, Cosmo Ono-Nai, and his wonderful family that I’ve become a part of. I’m happier than I’ve ever been in my life.

But work is a different story.

All anyone’s talking about is the Red Cloth this, the Red Cloth that. I can’t escape them, and all I really want is to find someplace the witches can’t reach, take my family—my pride—there, and hide them away from the world.

But I can’t. I’ll do everything in my power to protect them, and everyone else, from the building threat. There’s this dread building in my chest about what’s to come, and I have a feeling the Red Cloth is planning something big. I only wish I knew what so I could keep Cos, Jude, and the rest of our family safe.

A Purpose That Restores Us is a 119K novel and the third book in the MM urban fantasy series, The Magi Accounts. It’s recommended to read the series in order because it has an ongoing storyline, but there is NO cliffhanger.

*Intended for adults only. Please read the trigger warnings at the beginning of this novel.

Michele Notaro

Michele is married to an awesome guy that puts up with her and all the burnt dinners she makes—hey, sometimes characters are a bit distracting, and who doesn’t plot when they’re supposed to be cooking? They live together in Baltimore, Maryland with two little monsters, a three-legged princess, a four-legged goofball, and a cutie with giant ears (aka their two kids, their two cats, and their dog). She hopes to rescue another cat soon, and if her hubby wouldn’t kill her, she’d get more than one… and maybe a few more dogs as well.

She loves creating worlds filled with lots of love, chosen family, and of course, magic, but she also likes making the characters fight for that happy ending. She hopes to one day write all the stories in her head—even if there are too many to count!

the way this book just jumps from extreme sap to even more extreme distress is making my head hurt. bit too unrealistic for me but a good series, I admit.

You did that! I mean why did dude just walk up to that team leader, and asked for a date. Not once! But every time he saw her for the past few months. Guy was giving incel vibes. Like he was the gift to all women, cause he was a grade A a*hole. Then that twist. I knew that guy was a torturing piece of dog feces . I'm going need a group session after this.

Besides goal unlocked. Read over 5 books in one three day weekend. That's a record for the books. LOL!

And ya left me with quite a few novellas. Thanks! Side characters get to rule. If you pull a bait and switch, later. . . We gonna have words. Lot's of tears and for a few hours ill probably rage quit reading.

Cause even though I beat my first reading goal of 365 books. Doesn't mean I'm not going to try to read a thousand books. This year might be my year.

For a long time it reads like a consolidation book where Madeo finally settles down, where he finds and accepts his place in Cosmo's pride. It's a book where we see slight changes that gives some reason to be optimistic about the future. The shifter council is taking tiny first steps and even in the direct work environment there seems to be hope. So the focus is on pride life, the Cosmo/Madeo relationship and the usual stuff a patchwork family has to conquer. Sometimes it even feels like the fights against the tarragorians is just the 9-to-5 job members of the family have to go to, an odd and extremely dangerous job but a job nevertheless. The arrival of a new monster that leads to a near tragedy and the first emotional peak of this book alters this impression but doesn't revise it. So it needs the prides attempt to get Ash, who is still living at the compound, to move in, to remind us clearly about the terrible situation of mages. After what happened in the first books it's not to begrudge to the mages, it's just a different vibe to the previous books.

All of that changes in the last quarter of the book. Until then it becomes obvious that there is a mole in the agency and suddenly all hell breaks loose and it becomes obvious that the CIA equivalent of this world isn't worth a toss but as much as I am into action in this kind of urban fantasy this part felt more like action for the sake of action or for the sake of the high emotions it creates. It was beautifully choreographed and every necessary emotion was satisfied but the space between all that action and those emotions was empty like a colorful ballon filled with hot air.

Pride

Kitty cats on the run and kitty cats having fun, I flove this series and hereby claim Cos, Mads, Jude, and all the pride as my own. Hang on to your floof because once you start it’s a non-stop, suspenseful race to the finish, complete with so many feels, and chuckles, it will leave you breathless and wondering what just happened, but even more in love. I would say it’s a witchin’ good time but you know…

“He was everything. Everything I could’ve hoped for, everything I could’ve dreamed of, everything and more.”

Picture me with heart eyes and little hearts floating around my head, I can’t get enough of Cos and Mads. I adore everything about these two, from the way they snuggle to the way they work as a team. They are seamless perfection and I am squeeing in anticipation of how far they will go. Even when they frustrate me—as they know how to do—they have my heart so full I may need to learn how to shift to make room as my love keeps growing for this amazing family and series.

This one was the most brutal one in the entire series so far. The team is put in so much danger that there were times that I didn't know if any of them were going to make it. This cannot be read as a standalone. I never thought there were so many witches, and they just don't care who they kill. There is a mole, and we find out who that is in this book. I knew in my soul that this person was a part of the bad guys. We don't who is at the head of Red Cloth yet. I loved watching the pride expanding even Harriett joining the family. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest opinion

I normally do not like a switch in narrators half way through a series as you get use to a certain way that they voice the characters, but Mr. Zaba did a really good job & I enjoyed it.

I love it when I find a series where I am in love with each and every one of the books. No duds.
Needless to say, I love the struggle between Cosmo and Madeo versus the system they were born into, and how their love blossoms in between. No news is better news than "we still have three books in this series, coming soon!". Overjoyed for the news, and I'll be here as soon as they come.

I was crying my eyes out - there was a touch and go moment that left my heart feeling like it was splintering apart. I’m absolutely loving this series! Mads, Jude, Cos and the rest of the pride have stolen my heart from the very first book.

This was an action packed instalment, full of danger, betrayal, friendship and so much love.

Zachary Zaba was absolutely amazing and did a wonderful job bringing the characters to life.

Michele does it again. She rips out my heart with this story, but she does it so well you want to continue reading. I devoured this book in one go because I couldn’t put it away.

This is the third book in the Magi Account Series and if you haven’t read the other two (and the novella’s in between), I wouldn’t recommend this book to you. Like the second book, we dive straight in the story where we left of after the last book. Michele doesn’t bother explaining all the characters, the work they do or the world they live in. You really need the context of the other books for this. Because of this, we aren’t slowed down with explanations every other page and you can just buckle in for this ride.

What I love most about this series is the lovable characters and the heavy theme of found family. There is a lovely side cast of queer characters, as well a deaf kid. Michele knows how to write so you feel everything the main characters feel. Their pain, but also their love and happiness. Even though this story is set in a cruel world and there is so much pain, we are also treated with funny little details to break up the heavy stuff. All of this combined just makes me love these characters even more. I’m still waiting for Cosmo and Madeo to get their HEA, but we get another HFN at the end of this book.

The epilogue did leave me a bit confused, as we suddenly jumped time two years in the future. I’m not really sure why we needed this bit of information. The series will continue in the next book and we are due a lot of answers, but I was a bit put out by the time skip and I really hope the next book will pick up where this one left of, not in the future.

We get to know Cosmo a bit more as there are a couple of chapters told from his POV, which I’m still not convinced the story needs. However, I like Cosmo and the story continues to flow so it doesn’t really bother me.

I do think there is a lot of character growth in this book and we get a glimpse into the stories of some side characters, including a couple who will get their own novella soon. (I won’t put in their names because some of you might consider this a spoiler. You can find out whom I’m talking about at the end of this book.) I do wish we would start to get a little more answers, as barely anything is explained and even more stuff is happening which requires even more answers.

This series just continues to deliver and I ‘m not so patiently waiting for the next book ;)

ARC received from GRR for an honest review.

This is the continuing story of Madeo, Jude, Cos and the whole pride. They have their dangerous job during the day and then go home to hugs, cuddles and much love. It's become apparent to the group that there's a mole at HQ and they need to find them fast. There's several people acting off so they aren't sure who the baddie is. Will they be able to stop this person from further harm or will they get away? Mads and Cos are becoming closer than ever and are getting comfortable enough that they may actually tell each other "I love you". Cos is forming a deeper bond with Jude, through an outside project, and this thrills Mads. A member of the pride is damaged severely and it's not looking good for recovery. Will Logan be able to come up with a treatment in time. One member is taking steps outside the pride and it's a big step. The pride is expanding with another member and it's a welcoming just in time. Heartfelt attachments are forming inside the pride and it's overwhelming for one of the members. The witch attacks are ramping up and it's taking everything the group has to fight back. Mads ends up finding out who the mole is in a harsh way. (Sorry for the vagueness I don't want to leave spoilers.)

This book has everything and more. There are a couple places that are touch and go, with one that had me crying ugly tears. The love and support that the pride has for every member, and their friends as well, is awesome. I love that when someone needs comfort then they are welcome into the alpha's bed and it's not a sexual thing and no jealousy envolved. I love the way the whole pride is stepping up to raise the little ones. Hadian and Logan are growing up as well and leaving the angsty teen behind. I really like how Cos is a leader by example not by force. He shows his strength by doing the right thing, letting everyone have a say, getting everyone's opinions, etc.. He doesn't need to use fists to get things done. I love that Mads and Jude are seeing that they have worth past their Magi abilities. That they can have happiness too. I really loved the funny moment at the end between Mads and Jude. Jude's book is going to be awesome. I'm really excited about all the new books coming in this series. Just loved this whole book!!

Madeo, Jude and Cosmo as well as the rest of the pride are back, trying to track down the Red Cloth, witches that use blood magic to empower themselves. Mads knows they are up to something big and for sure very bad. All he wants to do is protect his family. Unfortunately, these witches are well informed, but Madeo and Jude are learning ways to defeat them which they share with other magi. Their work lives are not the best but home is improving with more people becoming family all the time. Working together is what they will need to do if they are to defeat the Red Cloth.

After reading this, all you ne able say is wow! The story is action-packed with more than a few dangerous twists. You will be crying along with everyone else as these hazards touch their lives. Our heroes do not give up and are incredible with ever changing abilities as the learn and adapt to the new world around them. Red Cloth is increasing in power but the teams are learning how to counter that power. The battle is not over and there is more danger coming. The next stories should be just as spellbinding as this one.

What the hell are you doing to us.....
Seriously..... to those whose read the book, my criptic review will make sense, to those that havent.... what are you waiting for?

This book is a rollercoaster from start to finish, non stop. A tini tiny bit is predictable.... ie, Ash being invited into the fam. And the bit about Mads and Cos and the souls.... But OMG, there was plenty I didnt expect...

We knew that Mads and Cos had some suspicions, good to know they were right, and I did guess who was helping the red cloaks... shame we still dont know why. Also, why is Mads always the target?

I loved the teaser of Charlie and Ash's story, and that Jude, River and Kulani and FINALLY doing something about theor attraction.

A Purpose That Restores Us is the third book in the Magi Accounts. This really needs to be read in order. Freakin fantastic!! Madeo and Cos’s life at home is going great, but at work, it’s a different matter. The storyline involving the witches is escalating and getting scarier! There is a mole and when we find out who it is, I wasn’t surprised. I love reading about the pride, family is everything including Harriet! Overall, a phenomenal read! This story is so well written, it just flowed and before I realized it, I was done flipping the pages.

Madeo has come so far! I love that he is now openly and happily referring to his pride mates as “my shifters”. Cosmo and Mads’ relationship continues to grow. I love that their relationship is developing at a “normal” pace that an IRL one might. I am a huge instalove fan, but seeing how Notaro deepens their relationship in every book in a slower organic way, amidst the action and fighting is beautifully done. The Red Cloth were revealed in book 2, and they are the incredibly dangerous organization the NHSO is now up against. How can it be that I’m both not surprised and super surprised at the same time at a big reveal that is made in relation to it?! This book has so many amazing sweet quiet moments in it between characters, showing all the different relationships between new and old pride members. The kids help bring some light hearted moments to a heavy story. The humans in this world have a lot to answer for and I can’t wait for their reckoning. I think this might be my favourite book of the series so far. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

A Purpose That Restores Us

Ahh!! This was another crazy rollercoaster of emotions that had me on the edge of my seat! There were a-lot of ups and downs and everything in between as well.

I loved the characters of course and not just Mads and Cos but Jude, the whole pride and everyone!! I can’t wait to see more of them.

There were some interesting twists and turns in this one and of course some high stakes that I can’t wait to see where things go from here.

I’m looking forward to the next book and beyond!

Again, nothing but emotions. I will be gushing about this series for the rest of my life. Reading along and watching Madeo heal throughout the series, Cosmo learn outside beyond what he's always know and become a vibrant pillar of an alpha, Jude learning to let go and start to focus on his wants; all of these characters are so full that they just pull you in. I'm sad to have to take a break to wait for the coming novellas and eventually Ruse, but dear Goddess, am I happy to have found the Magi Accounts.

**Spoiler**

My literal only problem with Purpose: I need to know what the hell happened on the battlefield at the first tear! Mads' power is INSANE and I really hope how he knocked that monster on its' ass gets addressed in the future! No one even batted an eye but Cosmo!

What a ride!! You need to read these books in order as they feature the same characters throughout. Told mostly in Madeo’s point of view, their teams are after the Red Cloak witches. This book is non stop action as the witches up their game of going after humans, shifters and magi alike to gain more power. Also Mads finally said the “L” word to Cosmos. Really enjoyed and highly recommend this series; you will not be disappointed. Cannot wait to read Charlie’s and Jude’s book.

Final Battles, Defeats, Victories and Love

So much happens in this third book that's it's difficult deciding what to cover in a review.
Firstly, the bond between Cos and Mads gets stronger with some unique side effects. Their pride, or family, starts to grow.
They're also hunting for the mole and battling the witches who have become bloodier.
B stories start surrounding Jude and his friends, as well as the burgeoning bond between Charlie and Ash.
Fantastic.

Audiobook review
I really love this series and this book is my favourite, although it is very tough on our pride.
So, I was really looking forward to the audiobook.

Zachary Zaba is not a narrator I listened to before, so I was curious how he would interpret the different people.

On the whole, he did a good Job and I totally loved his Cosmo voice.
I had some troubles with his narration of very emotional scenes as I missed the intensity.

All in all, 4 starts for a good audiobook and 5 stars again for the story

First review
OMG, this was a fantastic read. I loved every book in thus series so far - that includes the.5 books, which are for me a great addition - but this one is my favourite so far.

I will not go into details regarding the contents, as that would spoiler it, I think, but let me say so much: this one is very intense. It had me literally biting my nails (not something I do very often) and I couldn't read fast enough.

But it also has very sweet moments and I enjoyed them as much as the action. I love to see Mads and Cosmo settling in their relationship.
And the pride is great, all of them ... but I can't wait to get to read the next books. I am so excited about these that I nearly spoilered 😅

This is a great read and one of my favourite books this year .... and it is definitely necessary to read them, all of them, in order.
But if you like books with intense action and emotions and shapeshifters ... then don't hesitate to start this series.

An ARC was provided by GRR and I am mire that happy to give my honest opinion

Just a short one.

This series just gets better and better. The characters truly come to life, at times you get the feeling as if you were watching the scenes play out right in front of you. Your heart stops when your beloved MC's heart stutters, you hurt when they hurt, you laugh when they laugh, you are whole again, when everyone is safe and sound at the pride house. They have their struggles in life, Mads especially but there is always that undercurrent of love and acceptance from Jude and my big kitty cat Cosmo. I love it that there is no fabricated drama in their relationship just for the heck of it to create more tension. Instead the actual plot drives the story forward as it should be, for me at least. This book was not for the faint of heart I can tell you this much, but somehow, maybe because we were just freshly introduced at the time, the first one still got to me the most so far. Maybe because Mads and Jude were all alone at the start of the first one, no Cosmo, no pride to love and aid them. In terms of blood, sweat, gore and tears this one delivers cargo containers full of it.

Keep tissues at the ready and happy reading!

Can't wait to read about our 5 lovebirds in the upcoming 2 shorts!!

outstanding dark storyline that moves everyone forward

Rating: 4.75🌈

The Magi Accounts is a dark, brutal urban fantasy series. It’s a ugly universe of constant warfare between aliens coming through a human made rift and world governments trying to prevail against them using any and all mean possible.

For an unrecognizable US government, it’s meant that they’ve been treating the magi (magical human beings) like slaves, war fodder, and war tools. And worse. Subjecting them to the most horrific abuse, housed in breeding compounds, tagged and collared, little more than test subjects.

Several of our most beloved characters are magi and we go through some gut wrenching, horrific events with them in these books , including attempts of sexual assault and actual torture that brings home their dire situation in this dark universe.

Believe in the trigger warnings here.

Next on the low species list as regarded by the US government is shifters. While also in need of them as soldiers in shifter/magi teams against the powerful aliens arriving through the rift, the US government treats them barely better then the magi. They are tagged but have a hard won autonomy the magi could never hope for.

Notaro has built a remarkable tale of pain, horror and heartbreaking relationships amidst a war that only seems to be escalating, as a new enemy, made up of humans and witches comes for both the aliens and the shifter/magi population.

I fell in love with the growing found family that started with the bonded dyad magi pair, Madeo and Jude, together since early childhood. Traumatized, abused, sent to war as children as weapons, they trusted, with excellent reason, no one but themselves.

Now they are not only a part of Cosmo Ono-Nai’s pride, but Madeo is blood-bonded to Cosmo and his Alpha mate. So much change, almost more than either magi can emotionally handle after their abusive past.

Notaro’s stories have been building on the complicated bonds within the Ono-Nai pride and its success with helping the characters grow into a different person who sees perhaps a future with a relationship and a hope they never anticipated.

That’s a glimpse of lightness through the darkness we finally get to see here but not before some new horrors are visited upon the teams and characters as they fight against the Red Cloak conspiracy and new aliens , even dangers from within.

This is an exciting, suspenseful, dark series. It’s full of haunting moments and characters that stay with you. And each new story manages to bring an expansion on every level. From the series arc themes of slavery, species bigotry, child sexual assault, PTSD, loss and it’s ramifications, and so much more to the incredible growth the characters are able to demonstrate, emotionally and magically.

I always look forward to the next book. With great anticipation and a bit of fear. Because with each bit of hope we and the characters are allowed, it always comes at enormous personal cost.

Onward to the next story and this outstanding series step forward.

I’m highly recommending it and this. Read them in the order they are written for character development and plot.

This fascinating urban fantasy world Notaro has created is an interesting dichotomy of how things are objectively terrible for the people of one of the main characters even while his life, personally, is starting to get better. In this book, Notaro reminds us right away that life is still not great for the magi in this version of the United States. However, it is lovely to see the small ways in which Mads and Jude have come to trust their place in a shifter pride. At first, I wondered how their actions would come back to bite them, but I was pleasantly surprised at how this plot thread is picked up by Mads’ partner Cosmo using his position of power to attempt to make things better.

Outside of the home, Mads, Jude, Cosmo, and the rest of the pride who work with them are still waging a war on two fronts. Mads is walking a pretty fine line between keeping his extraordinary abilities a secret and doing his best to save lives, which was already stressful enough beforehand. Here, we get a fascinating new wrinkle in the interdimensional tear issue that gets legit scary, especially with how it is revealed and the potential repercussions.

Part of me assumed that this was the book’s “big problem,” so I was surprised to check my Kindle and realize I was barely halfway through the story! Instead, our heroes also confront, multiple times, the people of their world turning to darkness (like, aside from the regular prejudiced humans). This leads to some developments in the bond that already exists between Mads and Cosmo. I love when fantasy authors take things they’ve established in previous books and switch them up to keep things continuously fresh and surprising for readers. Notaro uses this trick to play right into the epic finale in a way that is both satisfying and logical.

She also ties the finale into this novel’s developments in the relationship between Mads and Cosmo, keeping the romance aspect of this paranormal romance alive even though it is between a fairly established couple. Notaro also understands that just because Mads now “has” Cosmo, he doesn’t need to lose his long-time magical partner Jude. In a (real) world where so much emphasis is always placed on romantic partnerships, this is a lovely reminder that different bonds are equally important.

I had a minor worldbuilding quibble during one scene where I wondered where the snipers were in a magical battle that occurs in a world also armed with tech. (Quick reminder to all readers and writers that magic is a tool, not a solution.) However, it’s brief, and Notaro recovers nicely. I also can’t tell whether one of the big reveals at the end was telegraphed too much or whether I just really wanted a certain character to be the bad guy.

Overall, I was completely satisfied and entertained by this book. It may be the third in the main series, but we’re far from done with this world and many of its problems. I look forward to reading more, and I especially appreciate the way Notaro is winding secondary novellas into the time between. I can’t wait to jump into the stories she’s teased about secondary characters next.

I love this series and am hanging out for more. I particularly love how their found family is growing, and relationships are getting closer. The tension in the ongoing plot kept me turning pages, especially the last few chapters as the identity of the person working with the witches is revealed.

Cos is wonderful, and I love how he goes out of his way to make sure everyone in the pride is looked after and feels safe. He has so much compassion and protective of everyone he cares about. I love how his and Mads’ relationship deepens in this story, and also his relationship with Jude, who is an important part of Mads’ life. I like how he and Jude are working together to try to make a real difference for Magi. Mads has grown so much through this series. I like how he’s feeling safe within the pride and with Cos, and takes the next step in their relationship. Mads goes through hell in this story, and I love the part Cos plays in that, and the added bonuses of their bond.

I’m hanging out for Jude to get his own HEA, and love how that part of the story is progressing. Can’t wait to read his books. Like, Mads, he’s finally starting to feel safe and loved.

The supporting cast rocks. The pride is family and their love and support for each other is an integral part of the story. I like the addition of Ash, and how Harriet is becoming closer too. I hope we see more of Wren and they eventually join the pride. Logan has come into himself as a talented magi, and I love that it’s him to makes a huge difference when it’s looking like one of their own won’t survive. Harriet totally rocks.

The witches are a very real and dangerous threat, and growing more so. I like the way the tension is ramping up and it’s obvious they have a nasty end game. The huge battle was exciting and action packed, and I liked that it had very real consequences.

I loved the revelation in the epilogue and the implication for their future.

The next instalment in the Magi Accounts is on par with previous books, and no doubt keeps things interesting. The story reaches here a fusion point, as the witches become bolder and even infiltrate main posts in government institutions - particularly in the NHSO. Consequently, most of the action comes from the Red Cloth and not as much from the targorians. On the other hand, the "sweet" side comes from the younger characters: Ash, who gravitates closer to Mads and Jude; Logan and Haiden trying to find a way to get along; and Wren, the youngest mage to join the party. Notaro thus spins the plot successfully.

Generally speaking, I have enjoyed "A Purpose that Restores Us" quite a bit... at least, until the last pages. The epilogue threw me for a loop. The shift in perspective gives the reader a severe case of whiplash: we do not hear a thing about the Cloaked Freeway during the whole book, so when the subplot appears unexpectedly in the epilogue, it comes across as a last-ditch attempt to rescue it. I'm sure it has to do with the next book - but that two-year gap feels off.

The other thing I didn't like much is that it looks like Jude, River and Kulani are not getting a major book - but a minor one, "An Embrace to Hearten Me", which will be book 3.5 in The Magi Accounts. I will reserve judgement until I read it. Maybe it'll be more than a short story? Either way, I'm sure I will enjoy it, as I'm already a big fan of the series, and Jude is one of my favourite characters. But precisely because of that, I'm disappointed that Jude is not getting his fair share in the series' main line...

I received an ARC from GRR and this is my honest opinion.

A Purpose That Restores Us is the third book in The Magi Accounts series. If you haven't read the previous ones, start from the beginning as these books need to be read in order.

With that out of the way, let me just say that this installment has been action packed, heart breaking and had me at the edge of my seat. Madeo and Cosmo went through the wringer and my heart ached for them. They had been placed in so many dangerous situations before but nothing quite as brutal, shocking and traumatic as these recent ones.

The writer was able to convey the emotions of the characters well. You can feel their pain, love and happiness come off the pages. The characters are endearing and the theme of found family really shone here. There was so much development and growth especially in Mads' part as he grappled with his emotions for Cosmo. The kids were believable and the other casts were interesting and diverse.

Some sections were written in Cosmo's POV and that did help the reader know more about him in general. The epilogue did throw me off for a bit, but overall this has been a really solid book. I am looking forward to the next one in this series.

I enjoyed this a lot and I would recommend giving this series a try. This would be a 4.5 stars out of 5 stars.

I received an ARC of this book from GRR and I have chosen to publish my fair and honest review.
