Winner of the Reedsy Discovery Gold Award El Amir once chose honor over love. Years ago, he walked away from Annie… the only woman who had ever unsettled his certainty… believing duty to culture and family demanded it. He has lived with that decision ever since.
Now in Marrakesh, his mother believes it is time for him to marry within his heritage. Elena Al-Farouq seems like the perfect answer. An Emirati heiress raised in privilege and expectation, Elena has been prepared to strengthen alliances, not question them. But beneath her polished composure lies a woman quietly awakening to something more. In Morocco, among Berber traditions, falconry fields, desert rides, and evenings beneath a rising moon—she begins to experience a freedom she has never known.
What begins as diplomacy becomes negotiation. What appears to be an arrangement becomes attraction. But desire carries risk. For Elena, freedom cannot come at the cost of becoming another possession. For El Amir, love cannot survive if it is chosen out of fear.
As old wounds linger and new feelings intensify, both must decide whether tradition defines them—or whether they have the courage to redefine it together.
Moroccan Sunset is a sweeping, sensual story of heritage, consequence, and the fragile line between protection and control. It is the fourth novel in the ANNIE'S JOURNEY series and can be read as a standalone story.

Tropes: women's fiction cultural heritage tradition family honor breaking norms women's rights
Moroccan Sunset is the last book in the Annie's Journey saga. While the main love story is between El Amir and new character Elena, we also get glimpses of Sarah and Annie again, and friends, too. MMC El Amir, while from the UAE, grew up with his father surrounded by Western influences. However, holding on to his culture's traditions and honor, he refuses to touch- even kiss- a woman unless he marries her. FMC Elena is a UAE heiress and while her family is looking for a suitable match for her, her heart believes it's time that her culture realizes traditions concerning women can be broken and she just wants her freedom.
I always liked El Amir (I secretly rooted for him over Ramone when it came to the love triangle with Annie in book 1), so I'm glad he got his moment. Elena seems like a good match for him. I liked how this book explored breaking with traditions and norms, especially when it comes to Arab women. While Elena's story ends happily, many in the 1990s did not. I wasn't expecting Sarah to be a large part of Moroccan Sunset, but it was fun to see her again. I love her friendship with El Amir, and how she was there for him when it came to Elena and her family.
Moroccan Sunset: Dawn of a New Beginning by Nina Purtee. I did enjoy this book. I love this series. I loved the cover. It's a shame this is the last book. I did like Sarah. I was glad to see her and Annie. El Amir did grow on me. I liked the writing style and the story. I wasn't sure how I felt about Elana. I loved the setting. I love the description. I did like how everything tied together for this last book. Definitely recommend.
I enjoyed this. It was a good story. It was nice to have more of El-Amir. I liked the setting in the book and the adventure we were taken on as a reader. The characters are great. I particularly like El-Amir. He's a very kind and generous person. The book is in third person predominantly from El-Amir's point of view which I really enjoyed. I recommend this. If you've read the other books in the series then you will enjoy this too.
The 4th book of Nina's that I've picked up now. This focuses on El Amir and his story.
I think this ties things together quite nicely as it's gives us much greater insight into El Amir in a rounder view. His generosity is already known through the previous 3 books but we finally get to see much more of his personality.
He's quite a complex character and his need for tradition whilst also finding his own path in the world does mean he needed someone quite unique but also someone who could understand and respect his culture. He and Elena are a perfect match although I was intrigued to see who her father had in mind.
These stories can be read as standalone books. However, I do like how you revisit the other characters and get to see how things have progressed with them. It keeps the stories flowing and means you're not left wondering if things have changed or resolved with them depending on which character you're dealing with and where things were left in the last book.
After losing Annie, the free-spirited Westerner, to a charming matador, El Amir must cut his losses and focus on the future. He and Annie were never meant to be, and she is now happily married to Ramone and carrying his child. Plus, the Moroccan man has more pressing matters, such as securing partnerships and resources for the Grumeti Fund, which aims to restore the wildlife at Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.
Hosting a handful of guests at his palatial estate in Morocco, El Amir is focused on piquing the interest of potential supporters for this endeavor. Love is the last thing on his mind. That is until he lays eyes on beautiful (but defiant) Arabian heiress Elena Al-Forouq. El Amir finds himself drawn to her beauty and wild spirit. She challenges traditions and leads with her heart, which El Amir finds alluring but incredibly frustrating as he is a man who honors traditional roles and expectations.
Elena is determined to break free of the Arabian pressures that bind her. She longs for a life of adventure and wanderlust to feed her wild spirit, and she senses the alluring Moroccan man with the golden eyes could be the answer. But does he feel the same?
“Moroccan Sunset: Dawn of a New Beginning” is the fourth book in Nina Purtee’s series, Annie’s Journey. It follows Annie’s former love interest, the brooding and handsome El Amir, as he moves past the sting of losing Annie. Elena has ignited a fire within him, but the Arabian beauty is reckless. El Amir finds himself navigating an intense inner struggle between honoring his loyalty to culture and tradition and letting his guard down.
As with any of Purtee’s books, readers can expect a thrilling adventure romance and a handful of well-developed characters to which one can’t help but feel connected. From the get-go, I was drawn to Elena’s character and the transformation she would endure. A beautiful Arab heiress who was undoubtedly misunderstood and pegged as an arrogant “puppet” was an intelligent young woman with a philanthropic spirit. Throughout her travels in Morocco, her kindness and compassion materialized. Purtee has done an excellent job transferring Elena’s frustration and restlessness from the pages and into my heart.
Then we have El Amir, who seems dedicated to upholding his responsibilities and traditions. Still, Elena’s presence appears to unearth his more rebellious nature. Finally, we have El Amir’s friend Sarah, who becomes a strong influence on Elena. Her passion for art and creativity and her penchant for adventure inspires Elena.
The author has a knack for sweeping readers off their feet with her lavish locales. This time, we’re being whisked away to the exotic and alluring Morocco and Spain. Touring the unique sights of the Agafay desert and taking in the beauty of serene waterfalls, I was plucked from the confines of my tiny office to a wondrous place. Moreover, the vibrant colors and authentic cuisine were easy to imagine—a true feast for the senses.
Readers who crave romance and excitement on the backdrop of idyllic settings will be drawn to Nina Purtee’s “Moroccan Sunset: Dawn of a New Beginning.” Themes of love, friendship, and identity are infused into the storyline. With stellar character development, readers will feel a deep sense of connection and understanding, enhancing their reading experience.
Moroccan Sunset: Dawn of a New Beginning is the fourth installment in Nina Purtee’s Annie’s Journey Series. At its heart, this romance novel follows El Amir Al-Mansoor, a Moroccan businessman who once shared a deep connection with Annie Harrison. However, their cultural differences ultimately drove him to step aside, encouraging her to rekindle her relationship with Ramone. Now, Annie and Ramone are happily married and expecting their first child, while El Amir embarks on a new romantic journey with Elena Al-Farouq. Elena, an Arab heiress, shares El Amir's cultural background but yearns to break free from those traditions to seek a life filled with adventure.
While the book showcases many strengths, the numerous intertwined storylines at times presented a challenge. Alongside the central narrative of El Amir and Elena, the novel also revisits characters from earlier installments, such as Annie and Ramone and Sarah and Hans, as well as introduces additional secondary characters. This rich array of subplots adds depth to the world, though the frequent shifts between these arcs occasionally made it hard to maintain focus on the main storyline. At times, the number of secondary characters felt a bit overwhelming, drawing attention away from the central themes. That said, Elena’s character development stood out. Her headstrong nature and refusal to let others dictate her path were compelling, making her journey one of the highlights of the novel. The romance between El Amir and Elena culminated in a dramatic, heartwarming conclusion. The resolution of the novel felt satisfying, and the various storylines found closure. Yet, Purtee left just enough intrigue to suggest the possibility of another chapter in the series.
Moroccan Sunset would appeal to readers who enjoy richly detailed settings and character-driven stories. The novel delves into deep cultural themes and offers a window into Moroccan life, making it a good choice for fans of romance with a strong international backdrop. The emotional weight and cultural richness make it a rewarding read. If you enjoy stories about love, tradition, and the push and pull of cultural expectations, this book will be right up your alley.
Book 4 in this series following a bunch of young men and women from across Europe, Africa, Asia, and America as they discover themselves, friendships, relationships, and life. This book focuses on the elusive Moroccan man El Amir, who had initially captured Annie's interests, but his commitment to his culture and heritage saw him seeking a partner from his own descent. So here we meet the Al Farouk family with daughter Elena. I loved how seamlessly she slotted into the friendship with Sarah - who has been my favourite character to get to know. She is a young woman who feels trapped by her position in her traditional Arab family, and it was really interesting to see that play out among the freedom Sarah, Annie, and the others felt. I did feel that there were a couple of quite repetitive reminders of past events which I didn't feel were necessary, but I guess if you chose to read this out of sync with the rest of the series it could be an aid. We go back to Spain and reunite with everybody we have met so far, and it was brilliant to see updates on their lives. Mara is still the relative unknown of the group and I'd love to get a story from her, however this book does wrap up a number of outstanding threads so could potentially this be the end of the line for these characters and their tangled lives? I look forward to seeing if there is more to come.
I highly recommend “Moroccan Sunset” by Nina Purtee! This is her fourth book in the series and is a must read! This book has travel, romance, suspense and self-discovery. I could not wait to read “Moroccan Sunset” and was so excited to get reunited with the characters! In Nina’s first book in the series, “Beyond the Sea”, we were introduced to Annie and we met some of her friends along her journey. Nina’s style of writing has a way of making you feel as if you are right there with Annie experiencing the different cultures, adventure and the food! In her fourth book “Moroccan Sunset” Nina introduces us to Elena, an Arab heiress and the journey continues with a multi-cultural group of friends and family. I like how Nina does a great job of reintroducing or reminding us about each of the characters so even if you haven’t read the previous books in the series, you will not be lost in the story. This time I felt like the characters were my friends and the last few paragraphs even brought me to tears, both sad and happy! You won’t want to put this book down and it will leave you wanting to know what happens next!
This is an enjoyable look at El Amir Al-Mansoor, who we met in Beyond the Sea, and his search for love. Eleana Al-Farouq may be what he is looking for but is he willing to risk his heart and her safety? The story is filled with friends that become family and exotic places. Elena is a good addition to the series. She is trying to figure out how to create a life that blends the traditions her family expects with adventure and a chance to do more than be a pampered heiress. Plus she wants a love match. It was fun to see Elena meet the strong creative women and the men that love and support them that are Annie and her friends. While I am reading the series in order this book can be read and enjoyed as a standalone. I recommend this to readers that enjoy stories with strong characters trying to figure out how to create the life they want. I enjoyed this series and will miss reading about Annie and her friends.
Thanks to the author and Love Book Tours for the gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the final book in the Annie's Journey Series, and it has been an epic, adventurous ride. The first 2 books follow Annie, the 3rd follows Sarah, and this one follows El Amir. The characters overlap throughout the books, but it was great to see El Amir in the spotlight, and his chance at romance. We're introduced to new character Elena, an heiress whose family is looking for a suitable wedding match in line with their Culture. The book explores culture, traditions, family expectations, honour and also the pressures that come along with it. It also navigates the freedom Elena gets to experience as she travels, and allow her to find new meaning in life away from her expected roles and pampered lifestyle. As with all the other books, there are rich and beautiful descriptions of the landscapes and exotic locations travelled, a supportive group of friends, and a leading cast of strong independent women who love culture, adventure, and finding themselves
This fourth book in the Annie’s Journey series focusing on El Amir and Marrakech, Morocco. El Amir is under pressure from his family to marry. He is introduced to Elena Al-Farooq, a beautiful woman from the UAE whose family is wealthy but traditional.
El Amir, Elena and Sarah travel around Morocco and Elena experiences a freedom she has never had before. She has been raised in a patriarchal, restricted culture but here she is free, not suffocated or having to conform. As she travels she learns about other women such as the Berber and their culture and traditions as well as herself. As with all of the series there are wonderful descriptions of the landscape and wildlife.
Characters from the series are interwoven throughout this book and come together in a fitting conclusion, the end but the dawn of a new beginning.
Amir’s turn in the Nina Purtee saga. He is a mysterious man of means and connections, bound by obligation to find someone that shares his cultural traditions and expectations. Will he find his true love?
The gang all reunite, coming in from far away places ultimately to be near Annie as her and Ramone start their family. Along this journey we are introduced to Elena, whose Arab family is set to find her a proper suitor. But she is frustrated and longing for the adventures of her new found gal pals of Sarah, Annie, Mara, Sabine and Meghan.
My favorite parts are the intrigue and mystery surrounding Alex and Amir with the covert military ops that surround each book!
The beautiful places you will find in this book, as well as the three previous additions, will leave you wanting an adventure, a set sail around the world vacation!
Even though I hadn’t read the previous books in this series, this book was great as a standalone. There was enough discussion of the characters experience in the previous books to make this one make perfect sense. I really enjoyed the story which was really the story of El Amir and Elena falling in love, but I loved all the other stories interwoven into the main story. The characters were all well developed. I really liked how El Amir stuck to his guns and didn’t sway from tradition, regardless of how much he was tempted. Sarah was also a brilliant character with her strength, confidence and loyalty to her friends. The story is well written and engaging. I really enjoyed it and will be reading the rest of the series soon.
This is the fourth and final book in the Annie's Journey series, and I really feel like I've been able to get to know all the characters over the 4 books. This last installment centres on El Amir, who's been somewhat of a mystery up until now. Whilst he was the focal point of the book, all the other characters were there too.
As well as finding out what the whole crew have been up too, I also enjoyed getting to know Elena. Her quiet rebellion against the constraints of her upbringing was just the sort of woman I love in a book.
A Beautifully Slow-Burn Romance in a Stunning Setting Moroccan Sunset: Dawn of a New Beginning swept me away from the first page. Nina Purtee paints a vivid portrait of Morocco’s landscapes and culture while weaving a heartfelt, slow-burn romance between El Amir and Elena Al-Farouq. The tension between love, honor, and cultural expectations adds incredible depth to the story. Every character feels real and memorable, and the romance unfolds with patience and authenticity. A must-read for fans of women’s fiction and culturally rich love stories!
Nina Purtee has continued the adventures of El Amir, along with all the amazing characters of the Annie's Journey series. A new romance is in the air that takes us to amazing destinations. I love the way Nina brings in adventures from her previous books - Beyond the Sea, Crossing Paths and Finding Sarah - to keep readers engrossed in these characters.
I've really enjoyed the Annie's Journey series. The stories have been adventurous, compelling, and featured beautifully described places. After briefly getting to know him through the first three books, I've looked forward to reading El Amir's story.
There's been an air of mystery about El Amir, but we have come to learn how honourable he is, and I hoped he would find some happiness after yearning for Annie.
I immediately loved the introduction of Elena, and I enjoyed the relationship between her and El Amir play out.
It was also lovely to catch up with Annie and the other characters and discover how their lives had progressed.
Beautiful storytelling and a wonderful conclusion to the series.
I recently had the opportunity to read an early copy of "Moroccan Sunset: Dawn of a New Beginning" in exchange for giving my honest opinion. After thoroughly enjoying Nina Purtee's previous novels, I can confidently say that this one is my favorite. The story delves into the life of El Amir, a wealthy businessman, philanthropist, and art collector. In Purtee's first book, Amir falls for the main character, Annie, but societal norms and cultural limitations prevent them from pursuing a future together. However, in "Moroccan Sunset," Amir encounters Elena at an event hosted at his mansion to raise funds for an African conservation project. Intrigued by Elena but unsure of her true intentions, Amir gradually discovers that there is much more to her than meets the eye. Their relationship unfolds through a series of sensual and intellectually stimulating events, creating a slow-burn narrative that leads to a deeply satisfying conclusion.
