Dragon Blooded: Book One of The Hidden Heritage Series

Rate this book
Earth was supposed to be a safe haven for them, but they’ve been found, their mystical blood a beacon to those who seek their demise.

David seems like an ordinary teenager, living in a small town in Kentucky. His biggest worries are the upcoming homecoming game and whether his new girlfriend thinks he’s giving her enough attention. But those concerns are just a front, a way for David to hide the he’s half-dragon, sent away from his home realm to protect him from an army that wants him and five other half-bloods dead.

A prophecy foretold the birth of six noble half-bloods, their human blood tying them to Earth, and their mystical heritage connecting them to Qotan. David was supposed to be left alone until he turned twenty, but the Orc King had other plans—plans that began with invading his stadium and sending warriors to kidnap him.

Now, David is thrust into Qotan, the realm of his dragon ancestry, alongside a disgruntled half-demon princess and a half-fairy prince. Together, this ragtag group must navigate the dangers of the land of their mystical heritage while seeking a way back to the human world.

Book one of The Hidden Heritage Series is a must-read for fans of Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and The Chronicles of Narnia.

Not only is Dragon Blooded the most beautiful cover of all Dan Kenner's books, it is absolutely my favorite! His writing in this book is exquisite and feels authentic like I'm in the mind of a teenage boy. The characterization is strong and well-done, and the plot is well-paced. I can't wait to read the rest in the series.
I don't want to post any spoilers, so I'll just mention my favorite things about the novel without giving anything away.
The way Dan Kenner constructed this book, I was sucked in from the beginning. This is the kind of book you're meant to fall into and disappear from reality. You close the book feeling like you've been somewhere. Like you've personally been on an adventure. There wasn't a single moment of disruptive or rough writing that made me suddenly self-aware that I was reading a book. I was completely caught up on the story and the world from page one.
I particularly liked the relationship with David (the MC) and his dad. Their bond was believable and genuine, and it was refreshing that it was a GOOD relationship. It wasn't about a teenager who loathes his parents. David's friendships are well-developed and believable as well. Amir is my most favorite character!
This story is edgy without being disturbing. Gritty without any ick. Clean without being lame and weak (a rare find!!), and very exciting.

Dragon Blooded is a portal fantasy that has plenty of witty banter and tons of exciting action while still being a clean story that the whole family can enjoy.
It follows a high school football player who’s just trying to make the most out of life while being dragged around from location to location by his dad. He eventually finds out that the reason they keep moving is because there is more to him than meets the eye. He is then whisked into a fantasy world out of his dreams and is forced to face a most unexpected adventure. He discovers more about himself and his family than he ever knew was possible.
Dragon Blooded is Dungeons and Dragons meets Percy Jackson adventure. If you are looking for a middle-grade fantasy adventure, this is sure to check all the boxes you are looking for.

A great start to a new series! I enjoyed the new world of Qotan and all the magical creatures like demons, fairies, elves, dragons and more. The book was engaging and has some slow reveal as David, the main character, doesn’t know everything about his dragon blood or the land he’s from (Qotan). There were also some surprising twists at the end. It was an enjoyable read and I can’t wait to see what happens in the rest of the series!

This was a fun adventure. It reminded me a lot of Pendragon but with more fantasy. Excited to see where this story goes
