Just when Sadie Sexton is starting to settle into her new routine in Hoochville, she learns of a decades-old secret that her grandmother’s friends have been keeping from her. Now it’s up to her and Clementine Parker to help Marcia Murphy, a woman in need, escape town. Marcia has one request on her way out of town; she begs Sadie and Clem to check on her prized Chinese Crested show dog.
Everything goes to hell in a handbasket when Sadie and Clem arrive at Marcia’s residence and find Daniel Murphy’s dead body in the yard. Now Marcia is the number one suspect in his murder, and Sadie and Clem might just be on the hook for aiding and abetting a murderer if they can’t get Marcia to come back to town.
With a power-hungry DA on the case, Sadie and her friends find themselves navigating the world of competitive show dogs while trying to discover what happened to Daniel. And they quickly find out that confronting blue-ribbon-hungry dog owners is almost as hairy as trying to stay out of prison.
"Nothing beats small towns for good friends, good times, and secrets. You’ll get all of them in the Sadie Sexton Hoochville Mysteries. Come join the fun." Jana DeLeon, New York Times bestselling author.
“Sadie and her crew are hysterical, adventurous, and get into some crazy shenanigans... Fans of Jana DeLeon and Angie Fox will find this series as addictive as theirs. The southern references are comical, and the age range for the cast of characters make this likable for all generations. Can't wait for the next adventure!!!!” ~ Goodreads Reviewer
Buttons and Blackmail is a craft and hobby cozy mystery full of humor, friendship, beloved pets, and found family. Join Sadie Sexton as she takes over her grandmother’s yarn shop and reluctantly becomes an amateur sleuth, determined to defend her loved ones and neighbors against false murder charges in her small Southern hometown of Hoochville, Tennessee.
This is teriffic! There is so much to enjoy in this second installment of this series that has me wanting more. Sadie and her friends are a great cast of characters and I look forward to reading what happens next.
Love this book 2 by Ramsey James. Love how they grab your attention in this cozy mystery. Sadie and her group of friends like to help out women in need to stay safe . They put Marcia on a bus to get away and stay safe from her husband. Like always life and the universe has other plans for Sadie. It’s not a life , just staying quiet and no action. The same night that they put Marcia on a bus with a burner phone , Marcia’s husband gets murmured. And lo and behold, Sadie has to answer some difficult questions, and Marcia is the number one suspect. Of course the DA has other plans for Sadie. Why does he have it out for Sadie and Marcia. You need to read it. Let me tell you what a cliffhanger
I admit, so far I like book one best. I found a lot I did not enjoy though there were parts I appreciated and enjoyed.
The plot here was a little too familiar, despite the unique dog show aspect. Most interesting to me were the sincere, caring, professional dog show people. It makes a clear point that the broad generalizations people were making about "those dog show people" were as inaccurate as any other broad statements about groups of people.
I loved how Sadie collected information in the beginning and disliked her reverting to confronting people in the latter part of this book. It's early days; I'd like to see Sadie and the rest of the crew become really skilled at getting information. I bet they could be incredible at it!
As a retired therapist, I can say Marcia's storyline was realistic. Sadie honestly disliked Marcia's behavior, yet Sadie still listened to her instincts to help Marcia. Impressive! Do finish the book to see how it turns out for Marcia!
Although this is technically a clean read, it's a bit rough. There's a scene with a hooker, main characters getting drunk (not Sadie), and the women friends go to an all male strippers club. No details, but not exactly fun to read about.
In the quest to help others, or to be a "ride and die" friend, doing whatever it takes and disregarding the impact of your actions on others and on the larger investigation is essentially helping with one hand and hurting with the other.
The people are, again, really well written and we get to know them better. There's still some real mysteries about each of them. I do hope to see them keep their zany adventurous side, but learn to be more wise.
The solution to the murder was a letdown. It had a Deus ex machina flavor rather than being a believable plot twist.
I do not regret reading this book as it is part of the whole, and adds an interesting layer to the overall series story arc.
Your reading experience could very well be different than mine.
Ramey James is the dynamic writing duo of Deanna Chase and Angie Ramey.
Sadie is still in Hoochville fighting with her annoying, jealous older sister Charmayne to fulfill the terms of their grandmothers will.
We pick up right where we previously left off. Clementine and Sadie are helping Marcia escape her abusive husband, Daniel. Before getting on the bus to Atlanta, she extracts a promise from them to check on her Chinese Crested dog Prince Hairy and his new pups.
When Clem and Sadie arrive the next day at the house they are greeted with barking dogs and a dead man!
Reed is called and after a moment of disbelief, arrives with investigators. Sadie and Clem are then hauled down to the sheriff's office for questions and statements. Poor Reed is again put in an uncomfortable position with Sadie and the district attorney. We are soon introduced to the odd world of competitive dog shows. Hijinks abound in this second episode of Hoochville!
The book ends with a threat to Misty Dawn and Raj’s wedding.
This style of writing makes it easy to forget it wasn’t written for television. This is a serial in style each new issue arising right before the books ending. The characters are so vividly written! Heck even Sadie’s sister Charmayne is believably a pita. The prison visit had laughing until I cried! 5*****
Book three Crochet & Corpses releases March 25th, 2025.
Nope! This book has the two things I dislike about many cozy mysteries: 1- the main female character commits a number of "crimes" as she tries to solve the mystery and interferes or endangers the law-enforcement efforts. #2: It has a cliffhanger ending. I think cliffhangers insult my intelligence! If I like the book, I will go ahead and get the next book, but I'm not going to do it if you leave a cliff-hanger! One star off for each of these!
Amazon synopsis: Just when Sadie Sexton is starting to settle into her new routine in Hoochville, she learns of a decades-old secret that her grandmother’s friends have been keeping from her.
Sadie Sexton and Clementine Parker are taking Marcia Murphy to the bus station so she can get away from her abusive husband, Daniel. She has only a small carry bag with her. But leaving her dog behind was what upset her the most. Priceless Prince Hairless Pawter of Hillbilly Hollow (“Hairy”) is her Chinese Crested show dog. So when they had to take her cell phone from her, Marcia was horrified since the Ring app is the only thing she has to monitor her dog, even though it would lead her husband right to her new location. She was not pleased to get a burner phone in return as she got on the bus. Sadie and Clem promised to check on her dog for her. But all does not go well when the two of them arrive at Marcia’s former home and no one answers the doorbell. They walk around back and find Marcia’s husband Daniel dead next to the back door with a bloody shovel next to his head! Sheriff Reed Hawkins was not going to be happy about this. Meanwhile, they gave the dogs water and started the process to find foster families to take them in for now. With a bunch of puppies and the mother dog, it was not easy to place so many.
When the missing Marcia becomes the prime suspect, Sadie and Clem have to get her to return to town or they too will be charged as accessories for helping her escape. No one can seem to find her. District Attorney Griswold with political aspirations is on the case and eager to get media attention. He demands that Sadie and Clem come to the station for a formal interrogation despite their sworn statements from the day before. Deana Marie decides to enter Prince Hairy in the Poochella Dog Show at Sunrise Glen. Are there any clues to be found among the odd assortment of competitors? And at the funeral home, David Murphy, Daniel’s brother, commented that he wished Prince Hairy was with them to say goodbye to Daniel. Deana Marie pointed to the dog, but when David held out his arms to welcome him, Prince Hairy took a step backward and growled at him! He continued sporadic growling and wouldn’t seem to calm down. Was it just stress? Will they be able to find the murderer and clear this case up? And will they find Marcia who still hasn’t been located? For those who prefer the audiobook version, the narrator, Tiffany Morgan, will bring the “reading” experience alive for the listener. She does a great job with the voices to personalize the story and make it easy for the listener to form an accurate impression of what each character is like. It helps to set the mood, familiarize the reader with the characters, and offers a pleasant way to “read” and enjoy the book.
I absolutely love this series! Sadie and her friends are once again trying to solve a murder. While doing this, they're each also trying to live their lives with things such as You Tube channels, knitting patterns, beginning a new relationship, planning a wedding, and fostering a little pup who is part of the dog show circuit.
Then there is Sadie trying to ignore her feeling for Reed. She's doing a good job of that, but how long will she be able to do that? Hopefully someday she'll realize that she can have a relationship with another man in law enforcement. It's past time for her to find love again. But it's nice watching the build-up to what I hope will be an epic romance.
There are even some moments when Sadie and Charmayne get along. This is another relationship I hope gets better and better as time goes by. Although I don't think the sisters will ever have a really close relationship.
I hope Sadie and her sister & friends have lots of books ahead of them!! I absolutely adore this series. Give it a try! I'm sure you will, too.
What do a yarn store, the dog show circuit, a hot local police officer, and a secret club that gets women out of domestic violence situations have in common? They are all part of our heroine, Sadie Sexton's life since she moved back to Hoochville to run the local yarn store with her grumpy sister.
Just days after recovering from being attacked in the process of solving the last murder in town, Sadie and her friends come across yet another body (as we sure she isn't Angela Lansbury reincarnated?). She and her friends must find the real murderer, ensure the safety of Marcia Murphy, and take care of her prized show dog.
Hijinks, friendship, and romance abound in this story, and the cliffhanger at the end left me impatiently waiting for the release of the next book in this series.
I have been provided with a review copy of Buttons and Blackmail from the author and I am voluntarily leaving an impartial review. Buttons and Blackmail is the second book in the brand-new A Sadie Sexton Hoochville Mystery series and I just loved getting to reenter this amazing world. This story picks up a week or so after the events of Alpacas and Alibis, the first book in the series. I just loved getting to see these characters again. They just find themselves in the craziest situations and it's just hysterical at times. Sadie is just such a loveable character and you just scratch your head at some of the situations she gets herself into. Her thought process sometimes is just so unique and she is just one of a kind. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series to see what else she will get herself into.
I read and enjoyed Alpacas & Alibis. Buttons & Blackmail continues where it left off. Clementine Parker and Sadie Sexton have helped domestic violence victim, Marcia Murphy, escape. When they go to check up on her Chinese Crested show dog, they are shocked to find, Daniel Murphy, is dead! What ensues is a lot of amateur sleuthing from Sadie, Misty Dawn, Laralee, and Deana Mae. They continue making life difficult for Sheriff Reed Hawkins. He is in the uncomfortable position of keeping Sadie out of trouble. How much longer will Sadie be able to ignore her feelings for Reed because he is in law enforcement like her dead husband? Misty Dawn is finally getting married--at the decommissioned prison! Unfortunately this book ends on a cliffhanger before her wedding! This series has a great cast of characters! Getting to know them better is a lot of fun!
When a dog show becomes deadly. Ohh this one was a fun return to Hoochville. Sadie and Clementine finds themselves in trouble after helping an abused wife escape her marriage. The two busybodies waste no time trying to solve the mystery with a side of dog show and adorable dogs with hilarious names. I laughed several times at the mayhem that ensued in the story. The narrator, Tiffany Morgan did a wonderful job portraying Sadie, Reed, and many of the moving characters in the story. The tones and inflections were spot on and I was never confused with the voices.
A very special thanks to the author for the gifted audiobook.
Sadie and her crew delve deep into the dog show and breeding arena and the laughs are plenty. Imagine the movie Beat in Show set in TN and the you have a good idea of the hilarity that is possible. There is a murderer loose and the clues are spread out in the dog world. Sadie and Reed always bring the sexual tension, Clem and Dot are my older age goals, and the girls are all helping plan Misty Dawn and Raj's wedding.
I love this series and am looking forward to seeing what happens next to Safie and her crew.
Another brilliant cosy crime romp. Sadie is sucked back into another investigation when she's accused of helping a murderer to flee but all she did was give her a lift.
There’s still a little bit of knitting mentioned but not as much as last time since the murder weapon isn’t a knitting needle.
This time there’s drama, blackmail and sabotage with the cutthroat dog show contestants.
There’s sleuthing, drinking and stakeouts. A fun cosy read.
Book 2 was just as awesome as the first maybe, slightly more awesome lol. So what do I love the most? So very much actually. The characters are written so well and so relatable you just want to join in their exploits with them. The small town setting is more than quaint it’s homey and just wonderful. I love the mystery and how everyone gets involved. I am even enjoying the slow burn will they won’t they rekindle between Sadie and the Sheriff. There is nothing I don’t like at all.
Buttons and Blackmail (A Sadie Sexton Hoochville Mystery) 11/15/24 5 stars Marcia
Her inheritance stipulations were filled with surprises. She and her friends want to continue the good deeds even when her relative is absent. Would they have moved forward if they'd seen their future?
There was never a dull moment. Her support system was ready and willing to help. This new team has started with a fun, sometimes funny series I'm enjoying. You will, too. Each mystery can stand alone.
Sadie is back! It's never a dull moment in Hoochville! Take a dead body, add a little bit of wedding planning and a whole lot of show dogs and you'll be wondering who done it as you race through town with Sadie. This story kept me laughing and entertained. I love the relationships Sadie shares with her besties, and even Elvis the opossum is growing on me! I feel like I'm part of the story and can't wait to see what Sadie and friends get up to next.
Ooh boy…Sadie & her besties are back in action in Hoochville! In less than a month, another death has occurred in Hoochville. Sadie & Clem are caught in the middle! You will enjoy another adventure when you read Buttons and Blackmail as Sadie & the Ladies try to clear her & Clem from any wrongdoing. Just wait until you meet the contestants in the Dog Show. You are going to love those names!!
Very cute follow up to alpacas and alibis. In this story, Marcia, an abused wife, seeks assistance from Sadie and her friends to escape town. Shortly after she does, her husband is found murdered. This story has many entertaining moments. I love the various names that were given to the show dogs in the story.
I really enjoyed the first book in the series even if Charmayne got on my nerves in the last one; in this one, I enjoyed her more. Sadie is a fun character, and I enjoy her friendship with her friends. A good female friendship is something I like to see, and she has a really good one with all of her friends. Add in a fun mystery, great writing, and some really hilarious moments, and you have a wonderful cozy mystery to keep you guessing and entertained for quite a while. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
This is such a great addition to a fun series. The book revolves around dog show competitions and how people can go a little crazy over their furry babies. The characters both regular and peripheral are well developed and engaging. Everyone should have a group of besties like the protagonist does. A quick fun read.
I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided a review.
Buttons and Blackmail is a twisted, interesting, cozy mystery involving show dogs! This well plotted book provided delightful entertainment. The sisters relationship improves a tad, Sadie and Reed relationship still simmers, and voila - another body. I love these characters. The life of a show dog is not all fun. Lots of drama there. I enjoyed my time in Hoochville!
I'm really liking this series. The characters(and they truly are characters) are all likable and down to Earth. They make you want to be a part of their group. The storyline is fast moving, and the mystery is fun trying to figure out "who done it". If you are looking for something to read, I definitely can recommend this series.
Very cute cozy mystery with Sadie and her friends up to their usual investigating a murder they have no business being involved in much to the sheriff's consternation. This was a delightful read and I enjoyed it very much. Fun characters and a nice plot with an interesting twist and cliffhanger of sorts to encourage the reader to get the next book.
Okay, I am not into dogs but the mystery was excellent! Sadie and friends were very thorough in solving this mystery! What really caught my attention was the whole planning for the wedding. The ending is a cliff hanger! I will say that the secret back room at the yarn shop will still be a secret for a while but I look forward to the next book in the series!
Sadie and Clem find another body and they are determined to find the killer. There were a lot of twists in this book and the real killer as a surprise! Sadie and friends are always getting into trouble trying to find the killer. I can't say enough good about this book! I loved this book and the series!!
Good series. Good mysteries, some romance, some humor. Sadie and Clem help Marcia get away from her abusive husband and the next day the husband is found murdered. Did Marcia do it? Did one of the over the top dog owners do it as the husband had done many underhanded things at the dog shows they attended? Sadie and her friends are on the hunt to find the killer.
At the end of book 1, Sadie finds a hidden room in the yarn shop. Her grandmother and her friends were helping women escape abusive relationships. When Sadie helps Marcia, her and her friends end up with another murder and caught up in a competitive dog show. Who knew it could like this? The book sets us up for book 3 so I will definitely be reading it.
What do you get when you mix several best friends, a murder to solve and show dogs? A great cozy mystery that you can’t stop reading! Can’t wait for the next adventure with Sadie and the gang!
This is a follow-up to the first Sadie book. I absolutely loved this book. What can go wrong with Sadie, her friends, dogs, and a dog show??? If you read this book you will find out. I laughed out loud so many times with their antics. I can’t wait for the next book and mystery.
Helping Marcia and keeping herself out of jail seems to be Sadie's mission in this book. Sadie & her friends track down the killer and Prince Hairy finds a new home. I received an ARC from the author and have left an honest review.
