Mated to My Ex

Rate this book
Divorced. Fated Mates.

Elise always knew she would run into her ex-husband again, eventually. What she didn’t expect was that he would show up in the community she’s built for herself and reveal that the family she’s been working for is the same family that disapproved of their marriage eight years ago and refused to meet her. Now he’s back in town for his brother’s wedding, the very same one she’s catering.

Shawn’s always known that marrying a human went against his pack’s rules. It’s bad enough that she’s become deeply entrenched in his hometown, but when he senses his mate is somewhere nearby, he knows he’s in trouble.

It just can’t be his ex-wife. If she was his true mate, he would have knotted in her eight years ago.

Himbo, second chance, divorcees to lovers, fated mates, knotting, chasing

She chases him the entire book. And despite lying to her their entire marriage, and making her think he was cheating on her (sneaking out of bed at night to change into a werewolf), he just feels sorry for himself that she didn't trust him implicitly and stay with him back then. So despite being heavily drawn to her in the present, and later even finding out she's his mate, he just avoids her and feels sorry for himself, leads her on or gets to third base with her, only to draw back and avoid her again. And on and on for the entire book. Meanwhile, she's hurt by him AND his family, but ultimately forgives them all without any apologies because she's lonely and because body betrayal. This book could have been so good, but there was no redemption for either of them, they just fell right back into the same patterns. The two stars are for the monster fcker content.

Quickish Review

Man I wanted to like this, I liked the setup but the execution fell short for me. When I’m more intrigued by two supporting characters instead of the leads, there’s a problem.

The idea of not knowing your mate from the instant you meet them? Interesting. That it’s so tied to the classic “curse” trope instead of just shifters shifting, ok say more. And I’ll give points for not fixating on making the FMc’s personality on her weight.

But I never connected with either MC, the pacing was sluggish because there’s so much exposition that’s saved until the very end and even their sexual chemistry was just…fine.

I’d read the next book cause Im curious about those supporting characters but otherwise this was just an ok read at best.

First, love a Western Mass locale. Even when a fictional town.

Second, obsessed that after trying to forget all about her ex, she managed to unknowingly find herself in his hometown, interwoven with his family, (Whom she'd never met) and feeling like her work-family is her dream family.

Third, love that he didn't know they were mates until 8 years after their divorce. I like the change of pace from the usual insta-love fated mates. Also interesting that he knows he met his Mate due to a physiological change but doesn't know who, and "knows" it can't be Elise since she is human, and they had been married, he would have known!

I just love this dumb boy's train of thought... 'I have this Mate Response, but I don't even want to find my Mate, just Elise... Every time I touch Elise, I have this Mate Response, how strange.'

Fourth, I like seeing Catholic Guilt and religious trauma manifest in a mmc, rather than fmc. I love the parallel between Catholic teachings around sex and how his parents taught him about being a werewolf. Which explains why it took him so long to piece together the whole Mate thing.

This story was intriguing, but not completely satisfying. I loved it and definitely stayed for the ride and I will be reading any future books from this world and from this author. For anyone that can stand reading it, I think you'll have fun. But, there will be a LOT of folks for which this story does not work.

I have high (I think they're actually pretty basic) standards for what makes a satisfying 2nd chance romance.

There are three things I need to make a second chance romance work really well:
1. A real reason the two people broke up, that isn’t due to them being crap people.
2. Real growth leading them back to each other.
3. An abiding love and faithfulness, meaning there were no other folks they pursued while they were broken up.

This book kinda teased at these elements but didn't do a great job at any of them. Please be aware that some of these are (I believe, minor) spoilers:
.
.
.
.
.
.

They broke up because she thought he was cheating on her and he just was hiding his werewolf nature. He keeps hiding from her until she finds out on her own and confronts him with it and pursues him. He does SO MUCH PUSHING AWAY until be very very end when she's finally convinced him that she'll love him as a werewolf. Frankly, he comes off as a coward because he won't chance telling her the truth about himself because he thinks she'll reject him. So, she ends up rejecting him because she knows he's lying to her. It was such a circular argument on his part that it killed me.

They don't grow in the intervening years. They are accidentally thrown together and end up interacting until she learns the truth. He had 8 years to learn and grow and did none of it. The only reason their love might work out is that the truth is out. But, a guy used to hiding his wounds and truths because of fear doesn't change overnight. He's going to be hard to live with. I wanted to see him grow... and he doesn't. And she doesn't really either. She just learns that he didn't cheat on her and that he had real things he was hiding. But it doesn't mean she's gotten more centered. She just knows more. And she's worth more than a man who will hide himself from her.

Finally, they both have "hooked up" with other people in the intervening years since their divorce. I bummed me out that he, especially, could do that.

There were some other things that bothered me... including a semi-cliffhanger, relating to one of the other brothers. I'm assuming we see his book next. We don't get to seem them in an epilogue and we don't get to see them grown and comfortable in their relationship. They basically say, "let's try again" and the book ends.

But, I did have a good time... so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Random thoughts
- There's a lot of religious discussion in here about how his family is super Catholic and he doesn't believe and how she wasn't good enough that way either.
- She is described as fatter than she used to be so this almost goes into fat positive. I would rather it be body neutral since she is thinking many times that she's bigger than she used to be and it felt unnecessary. I would love if her body was described as it was (which was well done) without there being thoughts of judgement.

This is a cozy entry into monster romance if you want to ease in or just read something cozy with a bit of spice. The FMC, Elise, has a catering business and is helping out with her employers son's wedding. It just so happens that their last name is the same as her ex-husband's from 8 years ago. A coincidence she thinks, until he comes walking in the door, ready for his little brother's wedding. Tensions are high, and the ex couple are hiding their previous relationship from everyone. Except she kind of already told her friend, who happens to be his cousin... what could go wrong?
This book was so fun, with Shawn, MMC, and Elise avoiding both each other and the questions of his family while also being drawn to each other. I think for the book not having any flashbacks, which I loved, the explanation of what happened to cause them to divorce and why his family and himself were to blame was done so well that as the reader I could see it from every part as well as the families. I think the sweet and slightly hurtful learning parts were my favorite because as different as the family thinks they are from humans and people in general they truly are so similar and just needed to come to terms with it.
The only thing that I felt there wasn't any closure on was what was going on in town and Logan's weird behavior but the way the book ended, I definitely think we'll be learning more about both in the next book 😏
Thank you to kate prior for allowing me to ARC read!

I’ve recently discovered second chance romances tickle some fancy in my brain, this completely pulling through for me.

The dialogue between the characters flowed really naturally and I just loved the chemistry between Elise and Shawn.

I do think the breakup could have been explored a bit more to make Elise’s actions more clear for some readers, but I personally like starting post the big climax where now our healing duo is picking up the pieces (8 years later and with the hurt less fresh).

The ending was a bit sudden but it did make sense how it tied up and why it did at that point as well. Regardless of that, I had so much fun with this book that I personally still feel it gets a 5/5.

So, I always said that I don't understand the lore/physics of monster-paranormal-werewolf romance. Don't even care for the genre and haven't read much or liked much of it.
But I got sucked into this book because I'm a sucker for the "soulmate trope" something about: ex souses finding out that they're meant to be after all tugged on my heartstrings.
Of course I would've preferred that trope to be executed organically in human logical world but I read this one nonetheless.

I won't be harsh on it just because it's not my cup of tea. Just feel free to give it a chance if you somehow like to read bestial sex. To make myself clear: FMC having sex with the MMC in his wolf form described as an animal. With bunch of other smut content.

I picked this one up because a fellow fat person recommended this and I liked it more than I thought I was going to like it for a straight werewolf romance 😂

I gotta be so honest though, I do not think any sort of shifter book should exist without queer people. You just can't tell me that the omegaverse is straight. It's just not a thing. Had this book had a singular queer person in it I probably would have liked it a little more.

That being said, I did still enjoy it. It is about this divorced couple who have been divorced for years and they end up seeing each other again and the guy is a werewolf and the girl is a human and it turns out that they're fated mates. For whatever reason that's never quite explained the mating bond did not show up when they were together before but it's there now and boy is there some pining to deal with. There's also a lot of family drama as well as some Catholic guilt which was interesting. Are werewolves Catholic? Is that a thing? I don't know maybe I just only read queer werewolf books. Huh. Whatever moving on.

The fat rep in this is very subtle. It's not really mentioned a lot besides his admiration of her body. There is little to no fat phobia internal or external which was amazing actually.

I feel like I would recommend this to a select audience and I did like it enough that I probably am going to read the sequel so do it that what you will.

This is so freaking cute and I cannot wait for the next book to release in a few months.
Elise & Shawn have all the banter, heat, and awkwardness you would expect in ex's.
The family and town were great side pieces to the messy messy bits that are these two idiots.
I loved all of it!

This just ended. No closure. No nothing. Just finished a sentence and that was the end of the book. WHAT THE FUCK!? Like literally they boned and the book ended (not giving anything away, you’ll see what I mean if you read the book).

I’m really curious as to why she didn’t present as his mate while they were still together. It says one sentence on the subject and if “we weren’t ready at the time” is seriously the reasoning being this book was even bigger bull-poop.

I was so excited to see this new take on the fated mates trope but it ended up falling short. The writing was choppy and the plot got muddled by Catholicism somehow? The concept of Catholic werewolves is hilarious but every sentence was trying to be flowery but never actually got the point across. We jump right into the characters and their history is discussed but I was never convinced these 2 were meant to be— I just didn’t care.

3.5 stars. I liked this but it was angstier than I was expecting compared to Prior’s previous books. The hero is an ex-catholic werewolf who has been estranged from family for nearly a decade and had major guilt and repression issues. The heroine has major abandonment issues from both their marriage and her bio family. This does have some monster smut and some truly funny lines but it took me a while to get through.

It was a bit slow. And I feel like… maybe the miscommunication trope? I mean… secrets… that’s kinda miscommunication, right? I hate that trope. But I would read the others. Maybe.

ARC provided by author.

We have a bit of you and impulsive love that ends in heartbreak and frankly miscommunication and SECRETS! Only to resurface years later in a fantastically angsty, banter filled wedding week where the beginnings of fated mates are threaded, secrets are uncovered, and that fluttery feeling still prevails. Tons of family trauma to wade through, wolfish lore is built beautifully, and there is some humor along the way to really keep us afloat in the sea slow burn, heartache, and yearning for what could have been and once was.

Truly a fun read that is pretty perfect for the season and for those looking for a fun take on the fated mates trope.

Listen, the storyline isn’t bad but I do feel like the characters weren’t great. Most of the book is between the main characters and while you already know they had a life before, there is so much emotional issues between them that it didn’t really feel like it got worked out until the very end and then suddenly it’s THE END. There really wasn’t any closure between them even if they were mates. Idk, I think this really needed to be thought out more. It just feels like something is off about the book and I can’t quite put my finger on why. Plus, no one apologized to be MC. Not even his brothers. I just, there is so many questions that feel like your just supposed to overlook and be happy with the happy ending. And I’m really not.

I got the opportunity to read this as an ARC ( Thanks Kate!!) having not read a ton of mated romance books I wasn’t sure what to expect.

I LOVED this book. It was such an easy read, I loved the character growth that we see between when they first were married to now, and the growth with Shawn and his mother’s relationship was so nice to see!
I wish they would have touched a bit more on Elise’s family and tied up some loose ends with that, but I also understand it wasn’t necessary for the book to continue, I just am nosey and like all the details.

I also might just be used to reading more spicy books, but I did think there could have been maybe a bit more passion in the few spicy scenes in the book, but that being said I know that’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and what was in the book was written so well! I just wish there maybe would have been a bit more of it.

I’m a sucker for a happy ever after and this book tied up so nicely for me, and has me so excited for there to be a second!

All in all I really loved this book. It had humour, drama and a sweet HEA, Shawn and Elise were both so relatable. Definitely recommend this book to people who maybe haven’t read this genre before but are interested as it’s not overwhelming, but also to seasoned mate readers as well.

ARC REVIEW (thanks kate!)

I really enjoyed this spin on fated mates! I just needed more lore! How are they fated mates if she’s human? Why didn’t it happen when they were married? What changed in the 8 years they were apart? How come some wolves get mates and some don’t? Also, wish there was more apology/love something with Deanna and Elise! Elise needed a mom so bad and Deanna had some making up to do. Maybe we’ll find out in the next book since this seems to be a series!

My Heeeart..!!

This was a really great blend of the appeal of fated mates, and the reality of navigating heart-break. Family and religious trauma, big heaping helpings of self-doubt, and the way some people are just pulled together made this an *excellent* read. Definitely buying this one!

It just... no

Maybe second chance romance isn't my thing. I genuinely didn't enjoy this and I can't pinpoint where it went wrong. The childishness of the main characters? The jumbled way the storyline came together? The mom? All of it was just a hard no for me.

It was alright. The characters aren't remarkable. At some parts, it felt tryhard funny. But now I know I find werewolves hot. On the technical aspect, it was kind of lacking? Some sentences were run-ons, while others had typos. Not sure if Prior had an editor.

DNF @ 45%. I tried pushing through and I was hoping the book would get better but overall I just did not care about anyone or the plot. It’s sad to say even the spicy scenes were boring. The pacing of the book is terrible which is ultimately why I decided to DNF.

Thank you Kate for the chance to be one of your ARC readers, this was a lovely holiday read ♥️.

My overall take on this story looks something like this:
Rating 3.5/5 (I've rounded upwards to 4)
Spice 🌶🌶🌶 (not too much, not too little)
Fighting mutual attraction 10000000/10

This book is giving mindful, very considerate, very demure ✨✨✨, I simply love characters that own up to their mistakes and step up. That being said, it sometimes felt like Shawn was purposefully obstinate about realizing what was right in front of him and it turned a bit frustrating at some points 🫣.

I personally found the relationship between the main characters very believable, so much so that I would've loved more details about all sorts of things, like their background, the brothers' relationship with their father, the unsolved (possible) wolf attack and so on. But aside from wanting to grab Shawn by the shoulders and shake some sense into him, I had a lovely time reading this story and I hope we will get other characters' story as well.

I was left wanting more and I can't wait to read the sequel 🧘‍♀️

good, but it was not what i expected

First, there's nothing inherently wrong with this book...It just wasn't MY jam.
It felt like the conflict just dragged on well past what I was expecting. They didn't actually get together until 90% into the book so I'm not really sure I'd call it a romance. They were both stuck in the past and it felt like they got together as an inevitability vs wanting it.
