Rate this book
After a tragic loss, private investigator Nona Taylor swore off romantic entanglements and distanced herself from the world. Once a year, on New Year's Eve, she attends church to beg God for forgiveness, haunted by the guilt of driving her twin sister to her death.

Attorney DeMarcus Johnson is determined to climb the ladder to partnership by winning high-profile cases at his Los Angeles law firm, harnessing his ADHD hyperfocus to excel. He's everything Nona knows to steer clear of--an overconfident ex-jock willing to do anything for success.

Their worlds collide when Nona's pastor receives a mysterious letter claiming he's the sole heir to a substantial estate. Desperate for answers, Nona infiltrates a lavish charity ball, only to be found out by a suspicious stranger--so she latches onto DeMarcus and concocts a fib about being his fiancée.

Now bound by a false engagement, the pair reluctantly join forces to discover the truth about the inheritance. But when an unseen enemy strikes, they realize the stakes are higher than they thought. Can Nona and DeMarcus overcome their differences to keep the pastor safe, secure DeMarcus's partnership, and preserve a future for themselves?

What a fantastic debut for Jayna Breigh.
This book has it all. Flawed, but redeemable hero and heroine, a problematic puzzle to solve, and a grandma who imparts, godly wisdom every chance she gets. Pair that with a fake engagement, turned to a steady, swoony romance, and you have a winning plot that does not disappoint. I love the heroine, Nona, who is dealing with guilt, but seeks to atone for a wrong that caused grief. Along comes a lawyer, and ex jock DeMarcus, who makes his spiritual journey back to God with the help of memories of his grandma, and her spouting scripture for every occasion.
The mystery that Nona helps Pastor Grant solve, delves into interesting genealogy, and there is a plot to grab his inheritance. The story takes a lot of turns, but the pieces all fit together very nicely.
I loved this book and cannot wait to see what this author comes up with next.

This is a must-read!
I received an ARC copy of this bombshell of a novel packed with suspense, intrigue, and, of course, romance. In this romantic legal drama, The Hunted Heir (Jayna Breigh) has written a wonderful story that takes you into the past to discover and unveil decades-old "family business". The pace, characters, and plot development are wonderful. Attorney DeMarcus is smart, handsome, and arrogant, he's forced to confront workplace dynamics and takes a hard look at himself and his life. Private Investigator Nona is a vibrant young woman who is holding on to the past and living with guilt and unforgiveness. Nona and Demarcus's interaction with each other and family is hilarious and supportive. They learn to trust and release past hurts into the hands of the ONE who has always walked with them through their storms and trials.

This story is a perfect mix of romance, faith, mystery, and personal growth!

Nona, a private investigator, and DeMarcus, an attorney, are the ultimate "grumpy vs. sunshine" couple. DeMarcus is kind, patient, and full of warmth, while Nona is distant and weighed down by guilt. Her biggest regret is a mistake that caused her twin to run away, never to return. She’s prayed for years for her guilt to go away, not realizing that she’s already been forgiven, she just needs to forgive herself.

DeMarcus has been chasing success but finds it doesn’t bring him true happiness. A chance meeting brings him and Nona together, and they both end up with the change they need. When Nona starts an investigation for her pastor, she uncovers more than she expected. To keep her investigation secret, she lies and says she’s engaged to DeMarcus. He agrees to help, but when his firm believes they’re really engaged, the situation turns into something much bigger than they planned.

As they work together on the mystery and DeMarcus’s career, their "fake" engagement starts to feel more real. Nona, still struggling with her past, isn’t looking for love, but DeMarcus might just be what she needs, if she can let him in.

This story is full of heart, growth, and some unexpected twists. It’s a great read for anyone who loves stories about healing, forgiveness, and love.

Outstanding! A perfect blend of suspense and romcom, a blend of Cara Putnam's legal thrillers with Pepper Basham's romcom humor. Jayna Breigh expertly weaves her law expertise into this legal drama that will have readers on the edge of their seats as the story unfolds. The mystery quickly unfolds into one full of suspense. An investigator and young lawyer team together and quickly realize that they must delve into the secrets of the past to find answers.

I loved Pastor Grant and G'Mama. Great secondary characters that shared their years of experience with nuggets of wisdom and faith. I love the faith thread of learning to trust and release their burdens. The romance is a frenemies trope(one of my favorites) filled with witty dialogue that brought a smile to my face as I eagerly turned the pages to read how the happily-ever-after would come to pass.

This story was full of rollercoaster of emotions that are usually not present in a legal drama or suspense. It engaged me on a much higher level, leaving me impatient for the next book to come from Ms. Breigh's pen.

The beautiful cover of this book says "A Romantic Legal Drama," but it's so much more! It has some historical aspects for one character which cover family secrets, genealogy, and civil rights. The crime and mystery aspect is so good and had my adrenaline pumping. The family and friend relationships are wonderful, with older characters sharing their wisdom from God. They're so loving, not "high and mighty," so the younger characters actually listen. There's a natural flow to the witnessing, so it doesn't feel fake or forced.

The overall story is well done, intertwining the characters' personal lives with the crime/mystery part of the story. I wasn't confused and enjoyed it! The writing is superb, with examples and metaphors fitting the story instead of being cheesy. I love the depth of the characters, and the romance wasn't rushed or unrealistic.

I wouldn't mind seeing these characters again! I feel privileged that I was able to get an early copy from this debut author. Highly recommended!

Favorite quotes:
"A guilty conscience is like a smoke detector.... Blaring over some burned toast, making you think it's a five-alarm fire."

"There's... a difference between feeling guilty and being guilty, and the Enemy wants us to feel guilty even when God's forgiven us."

"...G'Mama spoke half regular English, half New King James Version of the Bible. She always had a quite, a song, or something from a sermon."

Thank you to JustReads and the publisher for an early reader copy. Opinions are my own.

When the main characters include a private investigator and a lawyer, I expected drama and some action. I got grief, suspense, romance, faith, death, and more… I’m not usually a legal drama kind of reader, but this book sucked me in… and then it twisted me up and spit me out! Rarely can a book tug at my heartstrings then drag me to the edge of my seat or have me gasping with shock. I absolutely loved this book!

Well written, with excellent character development and pacing, The Hunted Heir is a powerful story of redemption, wrapped up in legal drama, mysteries, a bit of romance (but not sappy!), and a dash of humor.

As a Christian, I appreciated the depth of the faith elements and the clear presentation of the gospel message. It’s well integrated into the story and doesn’t come across as “preachy.”

The thorough research related to the Jim Crow era was evident, and life in the south, then and now, is depicted with honesty and without bias.

This is the author’s debut novel and I’m eager to read more from her!

I received and ARC of this book, A great first book for Jayna Breigh. Intriguing and a page turner. I loved the legal drama aspect of this book. The references to shows and songs and things from my childhood were nice little surprises as well. I like how Jayna weaved scripture into every day conversation and the steadfastness of the characters. DeMarcus and Nona have great chemistry. I really enjoyed this book

The Hunted Heir is Jayna Breigh‘s debut novel. This attorney turned author wins with this delightful, suspense-filled mystery. There is so much to love about this book — charming characters, a twisting mystery, and a faith-filled message. I immediately fell in love with main character Nona, a private investigator who has struggled for a decade with guilt and shame. Walled off to avoid relationships, she meets her match in the disarming DeMarcus, a Princeton alum attorney working his way to make a mark on the legal world. They are divinely thrown together, and their hilarious fake engagement takes off. These two characters are a hoot, and I hope they have more books ahead of them. The story revolves around a land deal, crooked politicians, and a laughing heir — someone who inherits from an unknown distant relative. You know, laughing all the way to the bank. But there is nothing funny about the way the bad guys try to thwart the rightful heir from collecting. Readers are given knowledge that Nona and DeMarcus do not possess, and it’s fun to see how they uncover all the clues. There is also a secondary plot that highlights Nona and DeMarcus’s skills as well. Fun, fun reading! Breigh also includes a very realistic faith thread that I never found preachy. It is profound and filled with thought-provoking moments.

The Hunted Heir is a complete read — enjoyable characters, a fun plot, and deep spiritual truths. I very highly recommend it. It will be going on my best of the best list for 2025.

Very Highly Recommended.

Audience: Adults.

In The Hunted Heir, Jayna Breigh writes a legal drama, mystery, and romance all in one—creating a vivid, raw journey of redemption, healing, and divine grace. This is a story that digs deeper than the surface plot, connecting to something much more intense: the messy, honest way faith works in the real world.

Nona Taylor’s struggle with guilt and self-forgiveness feels so real and raw, it almost hurts to read. Her journey mirrors the burden we all carry at some point. When she prays, it’s like she’s breathing—each prayer grounded in the weight of her regrets, yet somehow lifting her one step closer to release. This isn’t some surface-level forgiveness. Nona’s spiritual walk is messy and difficult, and that’s what makes her so incredibly relatable.

Then there’s DeMarcus Johnson. He’s the kind of guy who gets things done, driven by success, harnessing his boundless energy, and his ambitious climb up the corporate ladder. The more I get to know him, the more I see that behind his sharp focus is a heart tugged by regrets and questions about his own worth. His grandmother’s wisdom, especially the line “God gives everybody a basket of gifts and a basket of challenges,” is like an anchor in his life. I can feel the weight of those words in his moments of vulnerability. And when he says to Nona, “I’ve been talking to God about you,” it’s not just a line; it’s a window into a compassionate and focused soul.

The spiritual depth in this story is beautiful—setting it apart from so many other stories. It’s about the raw, imperfect ways people lean into God when they’ve got nothing left to hold onto. When Pastor Grant tells Nona, “God never slumbers, and He never sleeps,” it’s not just a comfort—it’s a lifeline. The assurance that God’s constant presence is there, even when we feel most alone, is an unchanging truth.

The Scriptures in this book breathe life into the story. G'Mama’s tough-love advice, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap,” is a reminder that every choice matters. And every action has a ripple effect.

This isn’t a simple story of two characters solving a mystery—it’s about confronting the past and leaning into God’s grace for a future that’s anything but guaranteed—but so worth it. I find myself constantly reflecting on Nona and DeMarcus’s journeys, questioning how we all navigate our own struggles, whether we acknowledge them or not.

Each character’s growing faith feels like an organic part of who they are. Like when Nona’s trust in God to guide her through each step feels as real as any breath she takes. And how DeMarcus, though struggling to make sense of his purpose, still manages to acknowledge that God’s path for him is more than just professional success—it’s about living with integrity, and so much more.

Jayna Breigh has crafted a debut tale that is layered, textured, and far from predictable. The combination of mystery, faith, and character development is what makes this story stand out—and I am excited to see where she takes us next.

The Hunted Heir is the first book I have read written by Jayna Breigh and I look forward to reading more. It is the perfect debut novel. I loved the legal drama aspect. It caught me up from the very start.

The character development was great. I loved getting to know the different characters throughout the book. Nona and DeMarcus both had such compelling stories and obstacles they had to overcome. Diving into lots of different elements, trauma, guilt, and life circumstances.

I enjoyed the storyline and setting. The hunt for this mystery heir was a fun hunt, wrapped up in legal drama an history. I loved seeing Nona doing her private investigative work. While DeMarcus tried to work through the legal drama.

The romance was the perfect balance of sweet, as Nona and DeMarcus slowly fall in love as they are pretending to be engaged to help each other out in their work life. The slow falling in love is perfect. Low spice and just the way I like my romance to be.

Jayna Breigh did an excellent job intertwining faith throughout the story. I loved the coming back to faith and the process of dealing with their pasts to push forward to Christ.

***CASE CLOSED! An amazing debut novel!!!***

This is my first ever ARC copy of a new release, and also my first experience in the romantic legal drama genre. I'll admit that the "legal" part of description was a bit intimidating to me, and the "romantic" part had me worried a bit (as I don't like too much gush!), but...

...as I turned the last page, I realized my trepidation was unnecessary, as Jayna pulled off both the legal and the romantic without a hitch. Not too much of either --- just the right amount.

The characters were all well-developed ... the plot interesting and captivating ... the writing sprinkled with humor and easy-to-visualize settings and descriptions. I was sort of surprised at the edgy actions and seemingly first-hand knowledge of some of the "less desirable" characters' actions and activities; I hope that Jayna discovered this through research (instead of knowing from direct experience!)

I don't know how anyone can pull off a first novel this well and sound like a seasoned writer. (Maybe Jayna *is* a seasoned writer after all those years of law school and legal practice - just sayin!)

Being a boring vanilla Caucasian woman who has only set foot in a Black church once long ago (for a funeral I will never forget!), I found some of the descriptions of traditional Black church interesting and educational. I might have also missed out on some of the other references to Black culture (art, music, history, etc), as I've not had much exposure to that, but now I have!

Jayna managed to intertwine themes of loss, grief, forgiveness (of others and self), family, secrets, love, faith, history, business, ADHD, financial struggles, ancestry, historical race issues of the South, inheritance laws, and more ... all with a plausible plot line, believable and flawed characters, humor, and a touch of romance - what a way to kick of her writing career!

Note: I voluntarily and happily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book in PDF format, which I received from the author. All views and thoughts expressed are just my honest opinion.

I have been waiting for this debut to release for quite some time so I was really excited to finally get the chance to dig in. Admittedly I don't read a lot of legal dramas, (so don't know if this would be true for everyone), but I liked that legal conflict was unique from what I've read in other stories in the past. It felt like the second case Nona was working on with DeMarcus was just as strong (if not stronger) than the main one in the blurb for the story though. It wasn't a bad thing, as I feel some of the story's strongest development happened while working on the second case, but it was certainly more than just the one  that made this story what it was.

I have to admit it took a little bit for me to get into the beginning of the story, however once I reached the scene where the fake engagement began, things took off and I enjoyed it from there. I liked that it ended up being mutually beneficial for both DeMarcus and Nona to keep up the ruse, and how they were able to have fun with it too. I won't spoil anything about it, but I'll just say I'm a fan of wit, and there was plenty of it.

I liked that the faith element in this story had a lot of depth to it. So often forgiveness journeys tend to be about forgiving others, but what about when we can't forgive ourself?

I enjoyed this read and am looking forward to seeing what the author comes up with next :)

The Hunted Heir is Jayna Breigh's debut novel, however, Breigh writes like a seasoned novelist.

I have not read a romantic legal drama before, do others exist? I was drawn in by the title and cover before I realized it was a legal drama, otherwise I might have passed. Thankfully, there is not a lot of legalese, and everything makes sense.

Nona and DeMarcus have a unique relationship. Their first meeting doesn't go smoothly and I found it fascinating that the author chose for them to meet in a place they do not go to often. But, it does set the tone for the book.

The story is told from alternating points of view. I did not like Zeke's perspective, but we are not supposed to. I enjoyed seeing Nona and DeMarcus' perspectives, and their interactions with their family. Everyone needs a G'Mama, I adored her as did all the characters.

There are many different facets to this story. For the most part, they are wrapped up seamlessly. There was one character I felt needed more of an explanation toward the end that wasn't given.

I recommend reading The Hunted Heir if you enjoy characters with real problems, witty dialogue, character growth, found family, a realistic mystery and conclusion, ADHD rep, with a side of romance.

Thank you to the author and JustReads Publicity for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

I am a sucker for genealogy/ family history but add intrigue and action to it and I will stay up late late into the night reading. Which is exactly what happened.

The banter and wit were infectious and made me laugh out loud. The mystery surrounding the family history was so fascinating. I just loved the awesome characters well except the bad guys. Found family is one of my favorite tropes and this showed one of the best sides of finding family in unexpected places. There was even healing from grief and trauma.

I can’t wait to read more by Ms. Jayna! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be on your launch team and to share your work with others. This is my honest review and was not a requirement of being on the launch team.

When private investigator Nona Taylor takes on a case for a local pastor involving a surprising inheritance, she never expects to end up in a fake engagement with ambitious attorney DeMarcus Johnson. She also doesn't expect so much danger in what should be a simple case. Now forced to work with DeMarcus so that she can get the help she needs on her case, will this fake engagement lead to something more?

I never thought that I’d read a legal romance but after I read the book blurb, I knew I wanted to read this one. And I was right, from the moment I picked up this book, I did not want to set it down. It is exciting, thrilling, and romantic all rolled up into one great read.

I enjoyed that we not only got to hear Nona and DeMarcus’s point of view but we also got to hear the POV of one of the criminals. It added to the book. Instead of taking away from what Nona was doing in her private investigations, you were like, “No, Nona, not that” or “You almost have it, Nona”. It made it so much better when Nona got to where she needed to be in her investigation.

I also never thought, I’d be the type to have or want a “book boyfriend” but oh, my, goodness... DeMarcus Johns may just be the perfect man. I hope that Breigh didn’t base this character on someone she knows because that would be embarrassing. Also, I have kids, DeMarcus’s age. But I stand by my statement.

Nona’s investigative and legal skills were fun. I enjoy it when a FMC has non-traditional jobs (at least based on the books I’ve read) and do them so well. Nona’s need to guard her heart was well-explained and understandable. DeMarcus’s ADHD was written well. The habits he had to suppress it, such as clicking pens or burying himself in his work, were relatable.

For me, this book brought with it a lot of firsts - first legal romance, first book boyfriend. This may be Breigh’s first book but I certainly hope it’s not her last. If you like a little bit of political espionage, a fast-paced thriller, or just some great characters this book is for you.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This was a very engaging and very thrilling read! I loved the faith elements sprinkled throughout, it mixed well with the higher intensity moments. It was a perfect blend that I thought was done very well!

The characters were perfect for the story. Nona and DeMarcus were a fun couple that gave me lots of laughs! They were super sweet and their backstories drew me in.

Even the side plots and side characters were sweet and engaging. I especially loved the relationship between DeMarcus and Jamaria. <33 Now I need a book with Jamaria’s story!!

Overall, I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a fun mystery to devour. It’s perfect for a rainy day when you’re bored and need a wonderful escape!

Completed: Sep. 18/25

Format: Kindle e-book
Challenge Prompt: EOW's "a book written by an EOW author" (during September option)

Book #120 of 2025: I enjoyed this debut novel by attorney, Jayna Breigh. It is legal and romantic suspense.

I especially enjoyed the relationship between Nona and DeMarcus. Things went from frosty to civil as well as friends to more. There is a good use of sarcasm and humour. After a less than pleasing meeting, they end up being able to help each other in their professional lives. Both certainly have their share of mistakes, hurts, and guilt. Both come to realize they need to reach out to Jesus and know His forgiveness. They build a good camaraderie and learn to trust each other. They each go through some changes and some healing. By the end, the reader is cheering them on.

The suspense and legal aspects are well done. Though we know who the "bad guy" is from early on, there are other layers and parts to it all that eventually get revealed. I loved the community of Burnt Water and how things rightly become resolved there where it all started long ago.

Looking for a story that skillfully combines romance, legal drama, and emotional healing? The Hunted Heir by Jayna Breigh is a must-read. This fictional romantic legal drama offers more than just an engaging plot; it delivers a heartfelt journey of personal growth, love, and faith.

The story introduces two compelling and contrasting characters. Nona, a private investigator with a past marred by heartbreak and guilt, is determined to avoid entanglements of the heart. Her walls are high, built from the pain of losing her sister in circumstances she blames herself for. Opposite her is Marcus, a driven and charismatic lawyer who thrives on challenges, and when Nona’s dismissive demeanor meets his unrelenting ambition, sparks fly in ways neither of them expects.

The Hunted Heir is set apart by its thoughtful exploration of control and surrender. Through Nona and Marcus’s accidental partnership in both work and life, the story unpacks the futility of trying to manage every aspect of our lives. Nona’s carefully constructed facade begins to crack, revealing the chaos underneath, while Marcus learns that even his hyper-focused determination—fueled by his ability to channel his ADHD—has its limits. Both characters are beautifully flawed, making their eventual transformation all the more satisfying.

The narrative doesn’t shy away from tackling tough emotions like grief, guilt, and the weight of personal responsibility. As someone who has grappled with the loss of a loved one and the accompanying self-blame, I found this book profoundly healing. Jayna Breigh weaves scripture seamlessly into the story, offering a lens through which the characters confront their pain and discover redemption. These spiritual insights add depth and make the book a balm for anyone navigating their own wounds.

Breigh’s writing is both engaging and heartfelt, drawing readers into a world of legal intrigue, personal vulnerability, and unexpected romance. The chemistry between Nona and Marcus evolves naturally as they confront their fears and learn to trust in each other as well as God’s plan.

If you enjoy stories that blend romance, drama, and meaningful spiritual reflection, The Hunted Heir is the book for you.

What a great debut novel by author Jayna Breigh! I always enjoy a good suspense novel, especially one that is faith-filled and God honoring. This one did not disappoint. It’s a nice mix of mystery, history, and suspense. The romance wasn’t overly done which I personally appreciated.

I like how the author used her expertise as a former attorney to help develop the story, and that I was able to learn a little legalese along the way.

The character development was well done. Nona’s story of why she was carrying so much guilt, and felt unworthy of God’s love was heartbreaking. DeMarcus came off as being arrogant, but he also did have some insecurities mostly due to his perspective about his job situation. In spite of that, you could see he did have a good heart. The banter between him and Nona was cute. Pastor Grant is such a sweet man of God, and his family history was both interesting and educational. Of course, everyone needs a grandmother like G’Mama. I just loved her heart, and her wisdom.

Overall this was a delightful read, and I look forward to Jayna’s future works.

Favorite quotes:

“Feeling guilty for something you didn’t do or that you couldn’t prevent makes the universe revolve around you and your life, as if the fate of the world rises or falls on what you are or are not doing.”

”There’s also a difference between feeling guilty and being guilty, and the Enemy wants us to feel guilty even when God forgives us.”

Bravo! This debut bursts into publishing making a splash.

Nona Taylor is a solid investigator but financially her business is struggling. Personally, she's continuing to feel guilt about the death or her twin. And romantic relationships? She's not getting anywhere near that.

Enter DeMarcus Johnson...DeMarcus exudes confidence. That combined with his good looks have Nona steering clear of him. DeMarcus is persistent and keeps trying to thaw the ice Nona has built around herself.

The humor between these two is such fun. Beyond them we have two "mature" adults...DeMarcus' grandmother and Pastor Grant. And a strong faith element throughout.

Definitely look forward to reading more by this author.

My gratitude to the author for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

5 SHINING ⭐️s — There’s nothing like reading a book that has you so captivated you’re too busy flipping the pages to try to figure out how everything will end. Jayna Breigh did that for me with her amazing debut novel!

Nona Taylor is a private investigator carrying a weight too heavy for her. Guilt over the death of her twin sister drives her to church every New Year’s Eve, but she’s afraid even the good Lord can’t forgive her.

At watch night service, she briefly meets DeMarcus Johnson, a hot-shot LA lawyer vying for partner at his firm, and through providential circumstances, the two must join forces to solve a couple of cases—one involving an inheritance worth killing for.

I was hooked from the beginning! Jayna kept me wanting to learn more about Nona’s backstory and the guilt that plagued her. I enjoyed the cold-to-warm-to-hot relationship she had with DeMarcus and their playfulness.

The novel had a strong faith thread that was sweetly woven throughout the story along with themes of forgiveness, redemption, injustice/justice, and God’s providence. This is my first legal romance, but it won’t be my last! Add this to your TBR, y’all!

Thank you so much to the author and publisher for sending me a complimentary copy! All opinions are my own.

From the moment I found out about this one I knew The Hunted Heir by Jayna Breigh was one I wanted to read. I just had a feeling that I would love it, and turns out it's true! This Romantic Suspense/Legal Thriller is such a good story!

Nona Taylor goes to church only one evening a year, on the memorial of the day she lost her twin. New Year's Eve. She goes to pray forgiveness for her unforgivable sin, if only this time it actually worked. Yet, something does happen. Her life takes an interesting new turn, and just when she feels like she's hitting an all-time low, things start looking up. Hope in on the horizon, but is it too much to ask? Too good to be true? Probably, but at this point it's a chance she's willing to take. If only the annoying and too-charming-for-his-own-good DeMarcus wasn't part of the deal.

DeMarcus goes through quite the journey as well. His life seems to be going great, exactly as he'd always dreamed, until a bump in his plans and some unforeseen circumstances threaten to veer everything off-course. His charm and confidence isn't going to be enough to get him out of this one, but his new found ally and the resulting partnership with Nona might be just the thing, if only she didn't hate his guts. Princeton, though! How could she resist?

These two! What a hoot. I loved reading this one from the opening pages, and it didn't take long for it to completely demand my full attention any time I had a chance to sit down and read. How is this only Breigh's debut? Wow, talk about a stellar start! I can't wait for more of her stories, and I absolutely adored this one. Plus, Pastor Grant and G'Mama are irresistible, and I loved their mentorship type role in the characters' lives. This is a 'trope' that I love in stories, and thankfully I've seen it more embraced lately, but was something more rare in previous years. It's a trend I'm glad to see becoming more popular in these stories.

Jayna Breigh has given readers a wonderful and inspiring story, that carries themes of faith, healing, and friendship that is sure to please. The Hunted Heir has a little of everything, from a legal thriller with a good dose of suspense, a slow-burn rivals-to-more partnership turn friendship, a bit of genealogy, some emotional challenges and resounding truth. These are just a few of the things that make this one such a fun story. The Hunted Heir by Jayna Breigh stands up well amongst similar stories while also being a fresh take on the genre. A delightful read and one you won't want to miss!

The Hunted Heir by Jayna Breigh is a fast-paced, enjoyable read full of interesting characters, witty dialogue, and just the right amount of action and mystery.

Described by the author as “a romantic legal drama,” Breigh’s debut novel is a page-turner that straddles several genres: Christian, contemporary, romance, and mystery with hints of historical fiction thrown in for good measure. In my opinion, fans of any and all of the above genres would enjoy reading The Hunted Heir—and any future novels written by Jayna Breigh!

The novel primarily follows Nona Taylor, a private investigator haunted by the tragic loss of her twin sister, and DeMarcus Johnson, an attorney whose is working become a partner at his Los Angeles law firm. The lives of these two characters unexpectedly and repeatedly intertwine after a chance meeting at a New Year’s Eve church service.

I would describe the major theme of The Hunted Heir as learning to live a life fully surrendered to the Lord. Throughout the book, Breigh invites readers to call upon the Lord for help and healing. For truly, the burden of whatever we struggle—be it sin, guilt, grief, ambition, pride, or something else—is lessened when we give it to the Lord and allow Him to fill us with His direction and peace. Will we experience a life of blessing by choosing to live the way God calls us to live? Or will we exercise our own will at the expense of our relationship with Him and those around us?

Jayna Breigh delivers a dynamic debut with The Hunted Heir, a romantic legal drama infused with intrigue, faith, and a touch of humor. Private investigator Nona Taylor, burdened by guilt over a decade-old tragedy, collides with ambitious attorney DeMarcus Johnson when a suspicious inheritance claim draws them into a tangled web of family secrets, corporate greed, and danger. Their reluctant partnership—complicated by a spontaneous fake engagement—sparks witty banter, unexpected chemistry, and deep personal growth as they navigate both professional challenges and matters of the heart.

Breigh’s background as an attorney lends authenticity to the legal aspects, while the novel’s suspenseful pacing and well-drawn secondary characters—particularly the wise and endearing G’Mama—add richness to the story. Themes of forgiveness, faith, and identity are woven seamlessly into the narrative, elevating this beyond a standard legal thriller. Smart, heartfelt, and engaging, The Hunted Heir marks Breigh as a fresh and compelling voice in inspirational fiction.

LOVED this book!! While it has romance, that's NOT the main theme! Rather, forgiveness and giving God control are. Nona Taylor has sworn off romantic entanglements, and has distanced herself from the world. She pushes back before anyone else has a chance. Once a year, she attends church to beg God for forgiveness, but she never accepts it, nor does she ask Him for help with the rest of her life. DeMarcus knows what he wants, a partnership at the law firm he works for. He's worked for the partnership since even before he became an attorney. The partnership has been his end game all along. Until the fateful night he first meets Nona, and then the fake engagement they're caught up in. Will Nona finally realize that God has forgiven her, she just needs to accept His gift and let Him change her? Will DeMarcus realize that he needs to give up control of His life and let God lead him where He wants him to go? This a great book for a debut!!!!

This was an excellent story. I thoroughly enjoyed the chemistry between the main characters, the cases that bought them together and their spiritual growth during the story. I will definitely be on the lookout for more from Jayna!

Guilt over the death of her twin sister keeps Nona attending church each New Year's Eve. Her certainty that God can't forgive her keeps her away the rest of the time. But when her pastor asks for help in investigating a letter he's received about an inheritance, she can't say no. DeMarcus is determined to make partner at his law firm, so when a beautiful young woman claims to be his fiancée at a charity ball she sneaked into and his boss is impressed, he won't let her back out of the fake engagement. And soon, he isn't sure he wants to. But Nona will take a lot of convincing - not to mention she's busy investigating a mysterious inheritance. And it soon becomes clear that there's more danger involved than they could have known...

This was a new-to-me author, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Well, I found it took me a little while to get into it, but once I did, I was hooked. The snarky banter between Nona and DeMarcus was great, and I enjoyed watching their relationship grow - though even better was seeing Nona in particular overcome her demons and finally open herself to love (and forgiveness). As for DeMarcus' grandmother, well, she's definitely a character! While she doesn't come into the story a lot, she really adds to it. The mystery of the inheritance is well done, and the fence thread makes for added interest. All in all, a good read - 4.5 stars.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

I really enjoyed this book. Mystery, romance, twists and turns. I loved the dogs and the humor and especially Pastor Grant. There was a strong faith message that didn’t neglect the reality of bad decisions and past regrets. A great debut!
