One broken air-conditioner. One record-breaking heat wave. One repair job gone right.
Kyle’s not looking for anything but an escape from his broken air-conditioning during the worst heat wave of the summer. And when his repairman ends up being a total fox? It sure as hell couldn’t hurt to give the guy his number.
Garrett wasn’t expecting the adorable twink in 3B to proposition him, but he can’t help inviting him over. Yet when their scorching night together grows hotter than the temps outside, their one-night stand turns into a date, and that date turns into something neither of them expected…
Katherine McIntyre is a feisty chick with a big attitude despite her short stature. She writes stories featuring snarky women, ragtag crews, and men with bad attitudes—high chance for a passionate speech thrown into the mix. As a genderqueer geek who’s always stepped to her own beat, she’s made it her mission to write stories that represent the broad spectrum of people out there. Easily distracted by cats and sugar.
You know that fake af Twitter story about the person whose repairman asks for a picture and they send a pic of themselves because they are just so adorkable(!)? But it’s okay because the repairman is sex on legs and has fallen instantly in love with the photo? Well apparently the author read that story and decided they could make it more of a cliche. No need to proofread or anything, just slam out the silly little story that really doesn’t have more substance than the tweet had and send it into the world in hopes that it will convince people they are such a clever writer. Yeah… I wasn’t convinced. I kept reading in hopes it would be some silly sexy fun. Unfortunately the (two) sex scenes were unimaginative and the banter was cringy.
Short story (74 pages) with a first person dual POV, MM pairing of Garrett and Kyle. Repairman trope ✅️ with a couple of spicy scenes. This is part of Kat's Brannon Boys series that starts with Heat Transfer.🔥
This was a fun quick read 📚 I loved the banter and to anyone who's ever been told they're too much, remember to tell them to go find less!
Wonderful story of Kyle and Garrett, who meet when Kyle's air conditioner breaks and handyman Garrett comes to fix it. Loved these characters and they were together. Quick but complete story.
This delivers exactly what it promises to, starting with a silly, steamy 70's porno-esque, meet-cute and keeping those light vibes with heat through the story with a little added heart. As other reviewers have pointed out, it feels a little like an homage to the adorkable "Please fix my water, daddy" meme that was going around and this is the story we all wanted to read after having seen it. I loved it!
Kyle is dramatic, bold, teasing and Garrett in enamored with him. Their chemistry is instantaneous and after a stellar night together Garrett decides to ask Kyle out on a real date to see if they can build more. Their cute dating was sweet and it was lovely to see how well they fit together. Both characters were likable and easy to read and root for. I especially liked how the feels didn't seem too much for the story, you're left feeling really good about the couple's future, but not like they moved to fast and won't have staying power, which I can really struggle with in a novella.
This is great if you need something just a quick little OTT, insta-, hot story. It was a satisfying short story that accomplished what it set out to and didn't try to do too much.
I first read this last year as a Prolific Works freebie. The added epilogue gives this a cute tie-in with the new Brannon Boys series the author is writing but stands alone well.
I was given an ARC and voluntarily wrote an honest review.
Alternating Current is a short story that takes place in Katherine McIntyre's Brannon Boys universe. This story acts as a prequel to the first book, which released in 2025 so it can be read as a complete standalone. Alternating Current is a MM contemporary romance novella told from a first person dual point of view. It's very low angst, and has a guaranteed happily ever after. You can expect an apartment handyman and tenant, a broken air conditioner, a one-night stand turned date, and lots of heat.
This was just super cute and easy to read! At only seven chapters, I finished it in one setting. The slightly over-the-top handyman vibes were very fun and fit the vibe of the book well. The spice was great, and the passion and chemistry between Kyle and Garrett was sizzling. This would be a great introduction to Katherine's work, or a perfect introduction to the Brannon Boys series, or the first novel Heat Transfer.
I’m bummed this was just a short story. It was all of the good things and then some. I loved the characters, I already love the world, and the love was spilling out in happy, precious waves. It was also the perfect little teaser to the new spin-off series it precedes, because I was already here for it, but now I’m itching to dive in. 5/5🫶🏽
What this is, right, is a short, sweet, super smexy read, that hit all the spots that needed hitting for me, at this moment in time.
It is, quite simply, boy meets boy, they fall in love, the end! And I freaking loved it and the only reason I couldn't give it 5 stars was cos it was too flipping short and I wanted MORE of these two, I really did!
Neither Kyle nor Garrett is looking for anything permenant, but when Garrett comes to Kyle's apartment to fix his air con, all bets are off and the pair fall hard and fast and so flipping cutely, it was almost pure sugar.
This is set in the Brannon Brothers realm, and it's not necessary to read the first Brannon book, Heat Transfer, to follow this one. Garrett has connections with those boys, which is why it's in the series.
Short and sweet, smexy and steamy, a fabulous 4 star read.
Short, steamy, insta-love gay romance What this book lacks in length, it makes up in substance. By the end of this book, we understand both Kyle and Garrett even with very little backstory. And I for one, am glad they found each other. The book opens with Philly suffering exceptionally high temperatures and 23yo Kyle enduring a broken air conditioner. Up to now, he has been able to repair most anything that has broken or gone wrong in his new apartment but not today! Kyle knows nothing about AC repair and he is finding it hard to suffer or watch his cat Meowella Deville do the same. So, he calls the building’s repairman. Enter Garrett the 32yo maintenance man who is big, buff and sweet. One look at the twink who needs his help, and Garrett’s already thinking steamy thoughts. Kyle is his usual flirty self but with Garrett, he really means it. If you like fast-moving plots with two dirty-talking gay men, you will want to read this book. I volunteered to review an ARC of it.
‘The sky faded to tones of orange and sienna, and I settled back against him, loving the warmth of him against my back. Comfort was a rare and elusive creature, yet that was exactly what filtered through my veins. As if we’d been doing this for years rather than a first date. The sun was setting, yet something firm settled inside me along with it. A resolute understanding that change was approaching, and I welcomed that fragrant breeze with all my soul.’
Katherine McIntyre’s Brannon Boys series is a host for the sweet love match between handy man Garrett and the apartment dwelling handful known as Kyle. This delicious morsel, Alternating Currents, gives us all the good feels, both physically and emotionally, and provides a peak at future experiences in the Brannon Boys series.
I've already read Heat Transfer, the first book in Brannon Boys, Katherine's new spin-off series. This is a short story set in the Brannon Boys universe, and can be read before or after Heat Transfer. I love Katherine's writing and this is no different. It may be short but she makes it count, showing how Kyle and Garrett met and it was instant lust on both sides. After the initial steamy encounter, they then date properly and we get to see that they click outside the bedroom as well as in. This was a pleasure to read, starring two decent men who aren't shy to talk and say what they want. No miscommunication, no angst, no breakup, just sex and romance and a lovely HEA. A real palate cleanser after some recent disappointments.
This is a cute and fun book. But don't think that sexy was not included. This is the story of Kyle and Garrett. Kyle has a big personality and loves his cat. When a broken air conditioner and a heat wave coincide, he calls apartment maintenance for help. Garrett is a handyman and older than Kyle. He is more self contained. When the two meet, there is chemistry for days. This is their story. I really enjoyed Kyle's sass and just putting it out there attitude. Garrett is sweetness covered in a grumpiness. The book is well written and easy to read. I really enjoyed it. It is a fun read.
I received a complementary advanced review copy of this book from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was a sweet novella as Kyle hooked up and then started a relationship with Garrett. It was a nice story which sadly lacked the character development and detail that they both deserved. Easy to read and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.
- Age Gap (9yrs) - Tenant/Maintenance Man - Hookup to More - Broken A/C - Fast Paced - Flirty Teasing
This was a quick and fun meet cute while melting from the apartment heat. Lots of flirty teasing from Kyle and Garrett being super sweet. This story acts as a prologue to the Brannon Boys series, since the epilogue connects to Heat Transfer, Book 1.

Short and sexy novella! I really enjoyed reading this book. It’s a low angst story with a flirty younger guy who wants the sexy older guy repairman who comes to fix his air conditioner.
Kyle doesn’t really have to work too hard to convince Garrett that they should hook-up. What started as a one-and-done ends up being so much more. I loved the epilogue set one year later.
Note: this book was available free as part of the 2024 Summer Nights Prolific Works giveaway but the wonderful epilogue is brand new.
An advanced copy of this book was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
Who would think an appliance could make such a difference in the lives of two people. Yet it is said that heat and a steamy situation seems to bring out a significant attraction. Kyle urgently needed the services of a maintenance person and was fortunate to get the help from Garrett. This was a short read, yet kept me glued to the pages. I hope the remainder of 2024 goes as quickly as the last months, so that we can get the new Brannon boys series in January 2025. I received a copy from Prolific Works and this is my honest and voluntary review.
This was so fun to read! I loved how absolutely delighted Kyle and Garrett are by each other, even before they actually meet, they have such instant and natural chemistry. These two have the best mix of humor, heat, and sweetness. I loved the banter, the flirtiness, and the really lovely and romantic date. A perfect no angst quick read, I loved spending time with these characters, just really a joy to read.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book
4.5/5 This is short and sweet (and spicy). Kyle and Garrett are both fun. I like how irreverent and up front Kyle is, and Garrett clearly appreciates it too. The connection between them happens fast but feels like the best kind of serendipity and seizing chances. I appreciated the date and getting-to-know-you scenes to go along with the spice that made the stronger connection feel plausible. I liked the humour and of course Meowella Deville, lol.
I loved this novella about Garrett & Kyle. Their instant attraction was hot as fire 🥵 but it was way more than physical for both of them. Their different personalities give them the cute Ying and Yang vibe, while what they're searching for in a life partner makes them two halves of the same puzzle piece. This was such a fun little read. I can't wait to see cameos of them in the new Brannon brothers books 📚
A really cute story based on the 'please fix my water Daddy' thing that we've all been giggling over. This novella features a broken air con just to make everything extra hot, and the poor repair guy that has to fix it. It's a fast-paced story with a lot of humour and sweetness crammed in, along with the recommended daily allowance of spice. Definitely worth a quick read.
It only takes once with Kyle's broken AC to have all his fantasies come true with Garrett, the repairman. The flirty little twink does most of the chasing of the big, bearded bear but Garrett is ready and waiting to let himself be caught. It's a light hearted, fun quickie with no angst but plenty of steam. I loved it! I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary opinion.
My husband is an HVAC technician, so I knew I was going find this one fun! Kyle was unfortunately hot in the wrong way, but Garrett is able to cool him down as well as heat him up again! This is a fun and flirty novella so that is all I am going to give you. I really liked both guys and the easy romance!
Adorable. Adorable adorable adorable. I can't wait for the Brannon Boys series to start so I can see Kyle and Garrett some more. My only complaint is it was too short. 😅 Definitely could have read a full novel about these two!
Such a cute and sweet quick read. I really enjoyed the meet cute between Kyle and Garrett. Lots of flirting, low angst, terrific banter, great spice, and the chemistry between the characters was amazing. Fun and steamy story and one I recommend!!
Super fun, sweet, meet cute short story. Great quick read of the over the top Kyle and Garrett the handyman. It is an enjoyable read when you want some light banter and a good laugh. The perfect tie-in to the new Brannon Brothers Series.
I loved this! Kyle is so sassy and bold, Garret is the strong silent-ish type. They are perfect together! This is an adorable funny spicy short story! Totally worth the hour read!
I really enjoyed this story. Who would have thought that a broken AC could lead to a HEA. I really liked how these two just clicked. They were so sweet and hot together.
