Happily Ever Mishaps #3

About That One Night

Rate this book
She's a corporate lawyer; he's a carefree bodyguard. When their worlds collide, sparks fly in 'About That One Night'—a romantic comedy about opposites attracting in the most delightful way.

Life doesn't always go as planned, but sometimes, that's where the magic happens.

Enter Zoe Harper.

Let me tell you, life has a funny way of flipping you upside down when you least expect it.

Case in I’m currently packing up my life into cardboard boxes after leaving my long-term, commitment-phobic ex-boyfriend.

Just when I think things can’t get worse, I find myself at a destination wedding with a grumpy but ridiculously handsome bodyguard, Maximillian McCallister.

Max and I have always been he’s annoyingly charming, and I’m just trying to figure out my next move without losing my mind.

But one night, fueled by tequila and maybe a little bit of spite, we end up having the most incredible one-night stand. It changes everything.

Now I’m back in Boston, trying to figure out my new life with my meddling family, my stressful career, and stupidly hot Max popping up everywhere I go.

He’s infuriatingly perfect, and did I mention he’s my brother-in-law’s best friend? Yeah, it’s complicated. Even before factoring in the positive pregnancy test that flips my world upside down.

This story was an interesting mix of things. Zoe and Max keep getting thrown together because of the people they are connected with and related to. They start as Frenemies and become friends and then Friends with Benefits.

When Zoe breaks up with her idiot boyfriend, she's in a bit of limbo. Max steps in as an unexpected friend who helps her get out of her comfort zone. Before they know it they are secret friends with benefits and the feelings are growing really fast and everything culminates at a destination wedding where their teasing and fooling around lead to a full on explosion of a One Night Stand.

And that one night leads to a life changing situation. Which I'm sure you can guess by the cover.

This book had a lot of potential for me and there were things I really enjoyed. I loved all the small gestures Max did to show he cared and we were just waiting for Zoe to notice. I loved the community around them and the quirky friends we got to meet. Their chemistry was there for sure and the sex scenes were very hot!

However, a few things that irritated me and kept this from being the home run it could have been.

First, this is literally billed as an Accidental Pregnancy, it's on the dang cover. We see about 10% of the pregnancy in this book.

The amount of time they kept their friendship from the friends and family was irritating.

And finally, this was another case of a heroine dumping HUGE news onto a hero and when he doesn't react correctly within 2 minutes she's ready to annex him from his kid's life. This book didn't NEED a grovel if the heroine let him breathe for more than 10 minutes.

Narrated by Christian Fox & Vanessa Edwin who elevated this story for me and kept me listening. Their narration was charming. I loved the duet style during their text messages though it was dual narration the rest of the time.

3.5 Stars
3.5 on the spice scale

📚🎧eBook & Audiobook REVIEW🎧📚

I had the privilege of both reading and listening to this story last month via different PR companies. I can tell you, without reservation, that either way you choose to go, a good time will be had! LOL This is a fun story full of heart. It has a mix of sweet & dirty that I enjoyed, and I think you will also. Max and Zoe had the kind of chemistry you get giddy about. Like they were completely different people but very compatible. I like how the author highlighted that throughout the story. It made rooting for them that much sweeter. I loved the banter between them and between all the characters as well. Like I said, this story is fun and honestly, the hours it was in my ears felt like nothing. Some of that feeling could be because I’d *read* the story just a week ago but I think it was more because Vanessa Edwin & Christian Fox narrated the heck out of Zoe & Max’s story. Because I read the story so close to listening, I was able to hone in and concentrate a lot more than I usually would on the narration and they were ridiculously perfect! I have a huge smile on my face right now just thinking about it.

I haven’t had a chance to read Knot Really Engaged, but I did read the first in the series, The Ex-cavenger Hunt, and I’m completely smitten with this entire group! I’m also pretty smitten with Kendall herself and I cannot wait for more words from her.

Thanks to Literally yours PR and Kendall Hale for allowing me to read and review this ARC for my honest opinion.
This was a cute and steamy read.
I don't know if it would've helped if I read the other books in the series before this, but I kinda felt a little confused about their history in the beginning. I will go back and read the others to see if it helps! I did love Max as an MMC! Throughout, I felt the story was a bit repetitive, for that reason I did give it a lower rating. Still, I would recommend you give this a read if you enjoy a steamy frenemies to lovers trope.

This was the perfect end of Summer read!

I'm going to start by saying as someone with MANY food allergies. Reading about Max always making sure she had something to eat because of her dietary restrictions did something to my heart!!! That is a super special type of flirting and a special type of caregiving!

Summary:
》Zoe has a very type A personality. She adores plans and has a system for everything she does. After her world gets rattled she finds her family meddling in everything she does. When Max overhears he decides to step in! His go-with-the-flow personality shakes up Zoe's world even more. Although it does help Zoe realize just how free it feels to drop some of her systems and "live a little".

Zoe and Max were such a great balance. I loved the way he pushed her to try things she's always wanted to try! And I felt like she helped ground him some.

Accidental pregnancies are one of my favorite tropes. However, I feel like the pregnancy here was pretty predictable. But it pushed them to figure out what was going on between the two of them! And it definitely made for a sweet full circle ending.

This was my first Kendall Hale book! 😍

This was so cute! I really enjoyed Max and Zoe's story. Things for Zoe are not going exactly as planned. She is newly single, her career is not progressing as she'd like, and now she has to move back in with her parents. After seeing people around her in loving relationships, she wonders if she will ever find the same for herself. Enter Max. He and Zoe are friends, and when he finds out she is single, he reaches out to check on her. He is a bachelor who knows how to have fun and wants to teach Zoe to do the same. He pushes Zoe to step out of her comfort zone and enjoy life.

Max and Zoe end up in a friends-with-benefits situation that leads to them letting their feelings take over at their friends' wedding in Fiji. What happens in Fiji does not stay in Fiji, and there is an unexpected surprise. I loved Max and Zoe together! Max...whew! He has a mouth on him. I couldn't get enough! Their relationship was HOT and delicious. The banter and their chemistry were *chef's kiss*. Max is a stand-up guy, and I loved how he cared for Zoe. I loved the development of their relationship and how well they fit together. About That One Night has the perfect blend of romance, heat, heartfelt moments, and humor.

Narration:
Vanessa Edwin and Christian Fox performed this story in dual narration, with text messages performed in a duet style. They were the perfect voices for Zoe and Max. Vanessa and Christian took this story to the next level and really brought the characters to life. Their performances had me falling in love with the characters and fully elevated my listening experience.

When I first discovered Kendall Hale through her debut, The Ex-cavenger Hunt, a.k.a. the first book in Happily Ever Mishaps series earlier this summer, I fell head over heels for her writing and unforgettable characters. I devoured both The Ex-Cavenger Hunt and its sequel, Knot Really Engaged, in one sitting and gladly, this one was no exception. Honestly, I hesitated a bit when I found out this book featured surprise baby/unexpected pregnancy trope as I never was a fan of it. Most of the time, the main couples who got surprise babies were usually careless and didn't give a thought for their little ones. Mercifully, that was not an issue for Max and Zoe's story. *Thank you, Kendall! (relieved*

Max turned out to be much more thoughtful than I initially expected. I loved that he paid attention to every single thing Zoe did and constantly had her on his mind. He truly cared about her and always remembered what kind of food she liked, how she preferred, and even when she was making excuses just because she was denying her feelings for him. They truly were adorable together and I was glad their romance worked out naturally.

Lastly, I wouldn't say this book turned me into a huge fan of surprise pregnancy trope, but I was relieved to know Max and Zoe didn't let me down. They weren't your typical unprepared parents and their HEA was indeed well-deserved. All in all, I'd totally recommend About That One Night to everyone, especially if you loved an emotionally well-written surprise baby story.

I’ve been a little more intentional lately about reading new to me authors and I’m so thrilled to have experienced so many new stories I’ve absolutely loved.

Here’s one of them. Let’s get into About That One Night.

What I absolutely loved:
Your girl was not expecting the pure 🔥 that flowed from Max’s mouth.

The dirty talk was chef’s kiss.
Zoe and Max’s chemistry was definitely on point, so were the enemies to lovers vibes.

While Zoe experienced some issues, both characters held their own professionally.

While this is technically a slow burn romance, it’s a steamy little nugget.

The narration is top! Both Christian Fox and Vanessa Edwin did an amazing job bringing these characters to life. I especially loved Vanessa’s performance.

From this one book alone, Kendall Hale has a new fan! I’m looking forward to going back to read book one!

I highly recommend this for my fellow smut and pregnancy trope lovers.

I really liked this book. It was full of smut, like way more than I anticipated, while also very sweet with a cute plot and a great cast of characters. I listened to it on audio while following along with the ebook and loved the storytelling. The narrators did an excellent job.

I’m a little obsessed with the accidental pregnancy trope. I’m talking about stories that focus on single and expecting parents, and the way they get through them to create a life. Especially when the characters are modern open minded career focused people living full and healthy lives… well, maybe their secret relationship wasn’t all that healthy but you get the idea.

I was confused at the beginning when they introduced the characters since this is the third book in the series. I’m sure if I had read the other books, it would have helped me understand the beginning of this one. After I got past the first 15% or so, the story started to flow for me, and I caught on. I love the frienemies-to-lovers situation. Max and Zoe are so cute together, even though they are sneaking around at first, trying to keep it a secret. I love the way Max treats Zoe. I also love that this book includes text messages between the two of them; I always enjoy that in a book. When the accidental pregnancy happened, it was done so well and kept the story flowing. Max and Zoe handled the situation so well, and it only made them grow more in love. This book was definitely steamy—I wasn’t expecting this cute cover to pack so much spice! 🤭 I enjoyed this book a lot, and it was a very fast-paced love story.

Thank you, Hambright_PR and the author, for the ALC for my honest review.

This book was so fun!! This was my first book by Kendall, but now I want to go back and read all her books!! (Especially books 1 and 2 in this series!)

The 2 MCs were just the best. The chemistry (which they tried to ignore), the banter, the grumpy x sunshine element, and the way Max tried to open Zoe up to adventure…I loved it all!

Accidental pregnancies aren’t my go-to trope, but Kendall did it so well!! I loved it. I loved how Kendall perfectly blended the emotion, comedy, and romance. It was all so very wonderful!!

Thank you to Hambright PR and the author for the audiobook!! I loved it!

Okay okay okay! This book was so good! I had high hopes for this book and I was not disappointed!
This book has banter, chemistry, it’s funny and sweet and had me clutching my pearls!

Good god why did Max have to have such a filthy and romantic mouth! Ugh from the moment Max was introduced I was in love! Ugh he is perfection!
Zoe is a strong independent woman who don’t need no man! That is until she falls for Max! No but seriously she’s so smart, witty also has a wicked tongue on her and so independent!
The chemistry between the two was amazing and I couldn’t put this book down!

DNF at 24% unfortunately the relationship was already established from the get go. He has commitment issues and hates the thought of being tied down with a wife. But the FMC has him wrapped around her finger. Comforting her and a care free approach after her ex dumped her. I don't feel a connection to these characters and I'm bored.

Zoe Harper is a corporate lawyer in Boston who finds herself back living with her parents after breaking up with her long-term boyfriend. Bodyguard and best friend to her brother in law Maximillian McCallister is an internal bachelor who is determined to that Zoe loosen up and have some fun. They start a friends with benefits relationship that goes a bit further than they originally planned for one drunken night at a wedding in Fiji. Zoe ends up pregnant, which was not on anyone’s bingo card! Can Max step up and be who she needs? And can Zoe let go enough to let him try?

Thank you so much to @hambright_pr for the complimentary audiobook ALC and to @authorkendallhale for the awesome finished copy and swag! Stickers are my love language! Now, onto the book! This is my second read by Hale, and another book in the Happily Ever Mishaps series. You can totally read these books on their own, but once you meet these characters you’ll want to read about them all! I read the Ex-Cavenger Hunt over the summer and enjoyed this one just as much. The spice picks up even earlier in this book and doesn’t let up!! I’m excited to go back and read book 2 in the series, and for the upcoming fourth book coming out later this month!

OKAYYYY THIS WAS SPICY.

I love a good accidental pregnancy book. This was my first from Kendall Hale and it won't be my last! Thanks to Hambright PR for the gifted audiobook! These are my honest thoughts!

Okay, so at first, I was confused, because typically accidental pregnancy books either start with the pregnancy or end with the surprise. This one started off like any normal romance, with our main characters interacting, bickering in the best way, and the tension growing hot quickly. Listening to audio, sometimes I feel like I'm missing something, and I had that feeling with this one, too. HOWEVER, it quickly became apparent that these two were going to circle each other for awhile, playing a little game of cat and mouse before... *that one night* that changed everything.

I loved the community surrounding these two. They're OBVIOUSLY meant to be in each other's lives. The way in which their lives intersect, and how their relationship transforms, is magic. And hot. Max is charismatic and outgoing, looking for a good time, not a long time. Zoe isn't really sure what she wants, after getting out of a toxic relationship and moving on from a toxic corporate law firm, she's in the zone to find herself, and Max wants to be her partner in crime. He takes care of her in *all* the ways, and it's swoony! But, they make a deal to keep things casual... except his actions are screaming that he's serious about her.

*enter* a wild night at a destination wedding, and a lifelong surprise that's revealed about 6 weeks later. Zoe's life feels like it's even more in shambles, Max does NOT react well (like Joey in Friends when he finds out that condoms aren't 100% effective lol), and, well, then he gets to grovel. And it's... THE BEST.

Max & Zoe are 🔥🔥🔥🔥! and he is one dirty talker who loves to make sure his partner's pleasure comes first! ;)

Max and Zoe are the two people in their group of friends and family that no one expected to ever be together. especially since up until recently, Zoe was in a long term relationship.

Max, the self-proclaimed forever bachelor, believed that love and marriage were not in his future, and most definitely his included children. The only committed relationship he was interested in was the one he had with his job.

Zoe found herself at a crossroads. She realized that her relationship with Tom was as "okay" as it would ever get and she wanted and deserved more. She moved back to her hometown and wanted to focus on her career and independence.

Max challenges Zoe to live a life of fun, excitement and to do things for her, not make choices/decisions based on what other people think she should do. Live her life for herself. This includes her pleasure. Max and Zoe enter a no-strings attached, friends with benefits relationship.
This seems to be working out just fine... except for the feelings they both seem to be catching.

Their situationship is kept secret from their friends and family, so not to further complicate things. Until that one night.... when everything changes.

This book will have you swooning, throw little leg kicks in the air and blushing. when i say Max talks her through it... i mean he TALKS her through IT!

I absolutely loved this book and can't wait for Caleb's story!

OH MY GOD! I swear each one of Kendall’s books just gets CUTER AND FUCKING CUTER.
I gotta give it to Zoe though; after having to end her long-term relationship with her boyfriend and pretty much almost restart her adult life even including a career change, she is ONE STRONG COOKIE! But BOY did she have some comedy in her! She had me cackling alongside her and I gotta say, I would definitely be her friend FOR SURE. And of course, with a life change comes some spontaneity and who doesn’t love a little bit of that? Especially when your world gets FUCKING ROCKED by a hottie whom you’ve been frenemies with for A VERRYY LONG TIME.

The ultimate bachelor with no intention of looking to settle down, Maximillan McCallister is one hell of a DREAMBOAT. Not to mention being an ABSOLUTE SELFLESS SWEETHEART when it comes to the people he loves. Even more so when that certain someone has just gotten out of a long-term relationship… *smirk*. With the motto, ‘Just gotta live a little’, YOU ALREADY KNOW Max’s fucking mouth in the bedroom IS ON FIRE. Oh, and did I mention the GRAND GESTURES? The way he GETS YOU OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE? I COULD NOT with everything about him and BOY, DO I WANT A MAN LIKE HIM. FOR REAL.

Max & Zoe’s chemistry WAS FIERY, SPICY AND ALL ROUND GLORIOUS. Their banter was NEXT LEVEL. Did I cackle at their conversations? YES THE FUCK I DID. And this story couldn’t have been even more exciting with the unexpected PLOT TWIST and CUTENESS to go along with it. As they say, you find the one you’ve been looking for when you least expect it, even if it’s your complete opposite, and Max & Zoe DEFINTITELY represent that and everything in between. AND IT WAS EVERYTHING.

Okay to say that this was cute isn't enough. I loved the way this story was done. The way they slowly built up their relationship, it wasn't just a one time thing. Max had been waiting for Zoe to finally be free of her ex. Swooping in the second he learned that she was single. Slowly making his way into her life more than the usual bickering that he was known to be.

From making sure she always had something to eat, to flowers at her office; Max always made sure that she knew that he was thinking of her. Even if he wasn't able to actually say the words. More so if he was out of town on business. A habit that tended to happen more frequently than either of them would've liked.

Max never wanted to push her. Making sure that she was comfortable always. She was always the exception. He loved her. It was always her. Zoe took a little longer, but she got there eventually. Once she started to see all the things he did for her. Swoon.

They were falling for each other. Both afraid of the other's rejection. Once their baby showed up in their lives. They realized how foolish that all was. Max was already in love with her. She just needed to catch up to him. Thankfully it didn't take her too long.

Ugh and that ending??? SO cute. I lovvveee it. I just wish we got a scene where their little princess was born. I loved this story. It gave the cute lil feels.

ARC Review - 4⭐️

About That One Night is the third book in the Happily Ever Mishaps series featuring Maximillian McCallister & Zoe Harper. It was however my first in the series and by Kendall Hale!

Max and Zoe have been brought into the same friend group of friend by her sister marrying one of Maxs best friends. They bicker with one another everytime they’re together but they’re both wildly attracted to one another.

They enter into a friend with benefits situation but Zoe places rules on it like not actually sleeping together. That all goes down the drain when they’re in Fiji for a wedding and end up spending the night together.

Back home Zoe discovers she’s pregnant, when she tells Maxs will be accept it or will be stand by his never settling down and having children life plan?

I really enjoyed this book, I liked the characters and felt I was rooting for things to work out for Zoe after how she started out. I would like to go back and read the previous books to learn more about the other characters and the world someday!

Thank you Kendall and The Author Agency for the ARC !

A friends to lovers’ secret romance with likeable characters and an engaging storyline but while About That One Night can easily be read as a standalone, it is the third book in the Happily Ever After series and at times during my read I did feel I was missing some background to Max and Zoe’s relationship especially given that Max had been harbouring an attraction for her but hadn’t acted on it due to her then live-in partner. I think I would’ve liked to have read the earlier books first to see if the author had given any background hints to what was going to happen. Max and Zoe were at different stages in their lives. She was ready to take that next step, settling down and thinking about a family while commitment wasn’t in Max’s vocabulary, or it wasn’t until Zoe but in the beginning, it was definitely more a ‘friends with benefits’ type of relationship. I loved the dirty mouthed Max and his way of looking out for Zoe…. OK some people might call it stalking but he meant well and their sexting as their relationship developed added an element of fun to their story, until a nine-month bombshell made Max take a hard look at just what he really wanted from life.

About That One Night is the second book in Kendall Hale's Happily Ever Mishaps series, and wow, is this a happily ever mishap!

Max and Zoe had insane chemistry, and I loved how well they balanced each other out despite having such opposite personalities. Max and Zoe are part of a larger friend group, so they've known each other for years and have a kind of frenemies relationship. I thought it was really sweet how he checked in on her after her breakup; I wasn't expecting him to do that knowing that they kind of drove one another crazy. They give in to their crazy chemistry and have a one-night stand, and then a secret no-strings situationship... but growing feelings and a positive pregnancy test soon tie them together forever.

I thought the banter between these two was really top-notch. Max challenged Zoe in so many ways, and after living just a ho-hum life with a guy who was just "okay" to be with, I felt as if being with Max was like a burst of color for Zoe.

This book gave me all the feels.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

I enjoyed this book. It was a funny, fluffy, spicy book. It was a good palate cleaner after my last book, which dealt with heavier topics. There were no major conflicts (which I appreciated). Surprise pregnancy was one of the main tropes, but I appreciated the fact that it wasn’t the whole story. The main characters’ connection is already established by the time “the surprise” is introduced.

I liked how Max and Zoe’s relationship changed and evolved through out the story. He was attentive and caring and I liked all the small gestures. But that mouth of his (!)
I liked Zoe’s determination and I found her “weak resolve” towards Max funny.

This was an overall fun and enjoyable read. I giggle quite a bit and once again proved, that my “public poker face” isn’t very good (if you know, you know).

3/5🌶️

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
HEA: HFN
POV: dual 1st person
spice: a few open-door spicy scenes
TWs: mentions of cancer, cheating
Kinky Content: dirty talk, edging, finger licking good, fingering, masturbation, oral, praise
standalone: book 3 in the Happily Ever Mishaps series- interconnected standalones
final thoughts:
This series is so cute and I know I can count on Kendall Hale for good text banter, funny friends, and a good storyline. I loved Max and Zoe’s story and couldn’t wait for them to FINALLY admit feelings for each other. I love the opposites attract of them and their dynamics.
I would’ve loved to see moments of him taking care of her while pregnant or as a new mum instead of the 7-month time jump epilogue... but it was cute. I only just started reading the accidental pregnancy trope because of the doting and caring and loving and worshipping pregnant mama and loving on her after she gives birth and we didn’t really get to see Max and all his swoony possessive obsessive glory.

About That One Night- Kendall Hale
Narrated by Christian Fox and Vanessa Edwin

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5
Narration 🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧

This book was way spicier than I expected it to be. I’m not really sure why I didn’t think it was going to be as spicy, the entire premise was basically the characters being friends with benefits, ergo, spicy… it was very fast paced, so much so that I think the transition from friendemies to lovers was a little a little choppy, where Max was almost a little stalkerish, and since this isn’t a dark romance, it felt a little misplaced. However, once we got past that, Max and Zoey’s connection and chemistry was straight fire and it was scorching!

Christian and Vanessa did such a great job on this one. They were the perfect narrators to bring Max and Zoey to life!

Ex-Navy Seal, Max, is now a bodyguard for the security company he owns with his best friends . There is no time for women in his bachelor lifestyle, that is except for the one who got away . Corporate Lawyer, Zoe, just split from her loser ex and is now moved back in with her parents until she figures life out again . Except finding out that Zoe is once again single AND back home .. it is time for Max to finally have his time to shine . But can the two of them make it all work when two pink lines show up ???

This is book 3 in the Happily Ever Mishaps series and it can be read as a complete standalone .

This audiobook was given to me for honest review by Must Love Audio .

“Life doesn't always go as planned, but sometimes, that's where the magic happens.” It was a pleasure to get back into the Happily Ever Mishaps series’ world and read Zoe and Max’s story. An opposites attract, frenemies-to-lovers, accidental pregnancy, somewhat spicy romance where he falls first (always a favorite when he falls first). I enjoyed the text conversations between the main characters so much as that is where their personalities shined, and the Charades scene was hilarious! I appreciated that it was told in dual, first person POV as well, and the banter was top level.

This is the perfect book after a heavy read. It features banter and text threads that will have you laughing, chemistry, and a fun enemies-to-lovers story. Do Max and Zoe dislike each other, or are they fighting attraction?

Zoe is our lawyer she has a plan, she is strong and sassy. Max is swoon worthy, he falls first and is a dirty talker. I adore both of them and the tension is felt immediately. What if everything does not go to plan?

Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review

I knew I wanted to read this book the second I saw the blurb and the trope reveal and Kendall Hale didn’t disappoint. She’s a corporate lawyer and he’s a care free body guard. Trying to teach each other to live a little and have fun. I loved the chemistry, friendship and banter between these characters. I do wish I read the previous books in this series first. I think it would have helped me understand the balance between all these characters and friendships. I will definitely be going back and reading!

thank you to kendall hale for the ARC of about that one night!! I found this book to be super cute and was definitely steamy!! I really liked the MMC max and the way he treats Zoe. I also really enjoyed all the text exchanges between them - they were so cute and fun to read!!! I think, because I hadn’t read the other two books before this one, that I felt a bit less connected with the characters. that being said, I thought the story was well done AND the accidental pregnancy trope drove the plot forward in a really good way! 3⭐️
