Brielle Fairchild has sworn off love. Since the disappearance of her soulmate, Brielle soothes her heart’s longings with meaningless trysts. However, after her friend Silas Belmont finds his curse-bound, memories of Brielle’s lost consort bubble to the surface. Eager to bury her feelings, Brielle searches for her next paramour to occupy her nights, but never her heart.
Mateo Reed, healing from the death of his betrothed, is captivated by Brielle, the free-spirited beauty. However, unlike the rest of the town he doesn’t see the sexy siren but a kindred spirit hiding a well of grief. With his mourning period ending he sets his sights on the seductress. But Mateo is bound to a promise he made to his departed fiancé—to remain chaste until he falls in love again.
Can Mateo charm Brielle into an interlude deeper than passion? Or will Brielle tempt the well-intentioned young man to relinquish his vow?
If you love heart-warming moments and steamy entanglements, then read Charming the Curse’s Consort, a companion novella to Unmasking the Curse and part of the Aralian Series.
Chelle Cypress is a voracious reader, mother, wife and anime enthusiast. As a child, Chelle dreamed of becoming a published author. Through hard work, many late nights, and copious amounts of coffee, she has finally achieved her dream of sharing the stories of her heart with the world. Charming the Curse’s Consort is an intoxicating blend of heartbreak, seduction, and undeniable chemistry. Brielle Fairchild, the fiercely independent beauty who’s sworn off love, fills her nights with fleeting passion but keeps her heart locked away. When memories of her lost soulmate resurface after her friend Silas becomes curse-bound, Brielle is desperate for another distraction, anything to bury the ache of her past.
Enter Mateo Reed, a man grieving the loss of his fiancée, bound by a promise to remain chaste until love finds him again. While the rest of the town only sees Brielle as a seductive siren, Mateo sees her soul—one just as wounded as his own. Their connection is immediate, fiery, and fraught with tension. Brielle craves the safety of meaningless trysts, but Mateo, with his quiet strength and broken heart, sees beyond her defenses. He doesn’t just want to tempt her into passion; he wants to uncover the woman behind the mask.
Chelle weaves a spellbinding story where desire simmers just beneath the surface, and emotional stakes run deep. Mateo’s vow of chastity creates an irresistible push and pull with Brielle’s need for escape, making every interaction between them electric. Will Mateo’s charm melt Brielle’s icy walls, or will she tempt him to break his vow before love can truly take root?
For readers who crave a story rich with both steamy encounters and heart-wrenching emotion, this novella is a seductive, satisfying journey of two souls seeking solace in each other’s arms, not to mention a total 10/10.
Charming the Curse’s Consort was such a beautiful novella about love, loss, healing, and taking chances. We are introduced to the sassy seductress in book 1. As a take no shit healer, Brielle uses her charm as an armor to keep people at a distance while assuaging her own loneliness. After a devastating loss that leave Brielle in pieces she closes off her heart to ever finding love again. Mateo enters her life suffering a tragic loss of his own. He understands Brielle and is breaking down her carefully built walls more than she is willing to admit. While Brielle is only looking for a fling, Mateo made a promise to his deceased wife to remain chaste until he finds love again. As the two navigate a newfound friendship, they may just find the healing they both need within one another.
I loved the next installment of Unmasking the Curse. This novella was short and kept the story progressing. We get key plotlines I felt like were hinting towards book two.
We get new POVs which are Brielle and Mateo. I love how we get to see them heal together and get a slow burn in this story. We also get to Brielles friendship with Arianna grow. Mateo is a great addition to the series. His patient and calm self compliments Brielles fiery personality.
I love Chelle Cypress’s writing style. When I read her books it’s like a movie playing in my head. I’m excited to see where the next book is going to take them!
This was a sweet companion piece to Unmasking the Curse. It was interesting to see things from a different perspective and I enjoyed reading about Brielle and Mateo as they fell for each other.
ARC Review: Charming the Curse’s Consort by Chelle Cypress
Minor trope/generalized spoilers.
Charming the Curse’s Consort is a delightful novella that serves as a bridge between Unmasking the Curse and the upcoming second book in the series, Claiming the Curse. As an ARC reader, I was excited to dive into this next installment, and it did not disappoint.
This novella shifts the focus from Arianna and Silas, the protagonists of the first book, to Brielle and Mateo, offering a fresh perspective. Brielle’s character really shines here. Her fiery personality and strong-willed nature are paired with an intriguing vulnerability that makes her highly relatable. I found her internal monologue especially enjoyable, hilarious, relatable, and it added depth to her interactions with characters we met in the first novel.
The dynamic between Brielle and Mateo is one of my favorite aspects of this novella. Their relationship grows steadily over time, which I appreciated. Instead of jumping into a quick romance, we see their bond develop slowly, at key moments. While many fantasy fans love the "Shadow Daddy" trope, Mateo’s character was a refreshing change. He embodies more of the "golden retriever" trope—kind, loyal, and genuinely caring. It’s rare to see a male lead who doesn’t have a brooding, dark persona (to everyone but their mates, usually), and I really enjoyed how Mateo consistently tried to take care of Brielle. He’s just a good guy through and through, which is a refreshing twist in these types of books.
Another highlight for me was Brielle’s evolving relationship with Arianna. Their friendship starts to take shape in this novella, and their banter had me laughing out loud at times. I’m eager to see how this friendship continues to grow in future books. The same goes for Brielle’s relationship with Naomi—I’m intrigued by how Naomi will evolve under Brielle’s mentorship, especially as Brielle’s tough-love approach subtly shows she cares.
In terms of writing, I noticed a marked improvement from the first book. The repetitive phrases that occasionally pulled me out of Unmasking the Curse were far less present here. Chelle Cypress’ writing has definitely matured, making for a smoother and more enjoyable read.
Overall, Charming the Curse’s Consort is a short but worthwhile read, especially for those who loved the first book and are eagerly awaiting the next installment. It adds depth to the story and characters, leaving me excited to see how the events from Brielle’s point of view will play out when we return to Arianna and Silas in book two.
This was a solid book that I think did the previous book justice while also giving a sneak peek of what is going on in the background with two MCs from Unmasking the Curse (Arianna & Silas) to help set up the next book.
For this book it centers around Brielle and Mateo who are both struggling with their grief. For Brielle it was meeting and losing her cursed Mate several years ago to the religious organization that she was a part of at the time. We also learn more about this organization and their inner workings and you see even more how corrupt that organization is. With her grief and trauma Brielle has been through she has become more pessimistic in her view of the world and uses sex as an unhealthy coping mechanism without having to form bonds because she is scared to lose another person she cares about. For Mateo he lost his longtime sweetheart/fiancé but she actually made him promise to not give into the grief and to try and find love again and she even steered him towards Brielle but because she had spent time with Brielle she was aware of her and her habits so to help Mateo in a way to give time for a real bond to form she made him promise to Court Brielle and to not sleep together until they are both in love. Mateo is a sweetheart who is very much a golden retriever and is a great opposite to Brielle and just wants to take care of her while she comes to terms to her feelings. I enjoyed reading their story unfold and them coming together while they heal in their grief and found their HEA.
---- This book is about Brielle who has sworn off and given up on love. With the loss of her mate, she seeks use only physical intimate connections with others to not just the pain she feels but also her memories of Wren, never letting anyone get close to her. But those long buried memories break through her walls and resurface after her friend Silas finds love with his own mate. To deal with the pain of these memories she does what she always does, seek comfort in the arms of someone else, anyone else but this time is different when she runs into Mateo. Mateo is also grieving a loss love for his late fiancé who made him promise to stay chase until he could find true love again. It's not until he runs into Brielle and her aloof nature intrigues him. He decides to pursue her and in doing so starts to see beneath the seductress facade to the hurt kindred soul hiding within her exterior. For Mateo this sparks a desire in him that he has not felt in a long time and makes him think he is ready for love, but the question is will Brielle be ready to open her heart and choose him as well.
~ What a quick, but wonderful novella!!! I enjoyed reading on how two characters that lost their loved ones give themselves a chance at love again. Brielle is a strong independent woman and she's also sassy!!! She is well known due to her talents. Mateo is a sweet man; the way he asked permission to his first love to court Brielle was cute... Now you need to understand that Mateo is a widower... I loved everything from this story... We did get some glances from Arianna and Silas.... But sure, can't wait to continue their story in book 2... Soo if y'all have yet not read Unmasking the Curse... Please do so; that way you will understand who these characters are and how they are all connected...

“Charming the Curse’s Consort” is a captivating novella that blends elements of romance and fantasy, set against the backdrop of grief and healing. The story follows Brielle, a strong-willed herbalist, as she navigates her feelings for Mateo, a man mourning the loss of his fiancée, Ingrid. The narrative captures the complexities of love and loss beautifully, making readers empathize with the characters’ journeys. Chelle Cypress’s writing is vivid and immersive, drawing readers into the world and emotions of the characters. Overall, “Charming the Curse’s Consort” is a touching exploration of love’s resilience, perfect for readers who enjoy character-driven stories with emotional depth.
I received this book as an ARC read. Charming the curses consort was a book about healing and letting go of the past. We received a bit of a view point of Brielle’s life in the first book and to say the least I hated her in the first book. She was a take shit from no one kind of gal. I actually really warmed up to Brielles character in this novella. It was so interesting to see how she built these walls so no one could see that she was suffering herself. She put on her own mask to make sure she got shit done, but when Mateo steps into her life everything changes. I loved the way their relationship blossomed and how he used his own grief to help Brielle through hers. I loved getting a deeper look into her past and learning that she lost the one she loved as well. This is a truly touching story between Brielle and Mateo and I hope we can get some more of them!

OMGOODNESS I'm Blushing this book was so good I love that it was a continuation from the frist book but was about 2 different POVs & main characters. My love for these characters the reality they are facing even though this is Romantasy it's so realistic & detailed. I couldn't put it down & I was drowning in emotions & wonder. The MMC is so sweet & thoughtful. The FMC is so complex & caring. The ups & down & the attitude is off the charts. The ways things unfold it's like looking into a kaleidoscope you see ,hear & feel everything as if it's the frist time in a new & powerful way. You slowly fall for each of the main characters in different ways & you even cry & laugh with them. It's like a Dramatic Emotional Comedic Romantasy Mystery with a dash of Suspensefulness thrown in!!!
4/5 Tension 5/5 Characters Development 5/5 Overall
Charming the Curse’s Consort is an enchantingly beautiful novella. I didn’t know I could fall more in love with Brielle’s character, but this novella achieved me loving her tenfold. The way the descriptions pull you into the novella and the beautiful slow burn romance make for a wonderful story. This novella picks up on the in between moments at the end of book 1. I’m incredibly impressed by this novella because it has as much detail and heart as a novel. It’s not rushed or missing key elements— it is a novella that is well worth the read. Also I love the little cinnamon roll that Mateo is 🥹 He’s a walking green flag.
I had the pleasure of ARC reading this! Thank you so much 🖤 All thoughts and opinions are my own.
As it's a novella I'll keep this short and sweet (just like this book)
Mateo and Brielle are just amazing omg.
The journey to love after loss is 😍
The queer representation in a fantasy world is just fantastic and honestly I too am a forget-to-eat kind of bisexual.
Small spoiler because this quote ✨RESONATED✨ “You’re strong, but you don’t have to do everything alone. If you need anything, I’m here. You can rely on me.”
Oh man the tears are full on streaming down my face 😭😭 during chapter 12
The epilogue literally made me cry and I ugly cried into my nightie 😭😭😭😭😭
I adored this little stop gap to show us how life is continuing after Unmasking the curse and I am so excited about what's coming next 😍😍

When you feel that you're not permitted to love again, particularly after having loved so deeply before.
Brielle and Mateo's story takes place during and after "Unmasking the Curse". It brings a heartfelt tale of two people who learn to love again. She doesn't think she will ever love another soul; he just wants to show her that she's worthy of it all. I cried, I laughed, I kicked my feet like a schoolgirl.
It was a lovely novella, was so happy to see many of the characters we met in the first book. I cannot wait to see where Chelle takes everyone next!
Thank you, Chelle for bringing such amazing characters to life!

This is a companion piece following a side character, Brielle, from Unmasking the Curse. It was a cute story about two people dealing with their grief in different ways and how they come together through friendship and understanding of one another. Very casual, very slow moving. I did enjoy getting a behind the scenes snippet into what's happening with Silas and Arianna since the ending of UTC. I do hope we get more of Naomi, Arianna's sister, in the next book. There's a nice set up for her to be a very interesting character.
I'd thought I was living after Ingrid died, but the time I spent with you helped me realized I'd been surviving.
Mateo was EVERYTHING!! Ahhh I’m so in love with this novella. Which I realized I much needed lol Brielle in unmasking makes more sense now. Her story is tragic. And explains a lot of why she is the way she is. Mateo being the light to her dark makes it that much amazing . The love they both shared for their past loves was beautiful, but the love they share with each other is precious. Seeing Silas digress is scary as well, makes me wish 2 was out already . I hope Naomi will get her own novella as well as Silas sister.
To be honest, Brielle was never my favorite character. She was probably best described as an anti-heroine in the first book of the series. In this novella, we get to learn a lot more about why she is the way she is and how twisted her past truly was. After that, with all things considered, Brielle actually turned out pretty good with a strict moral compass in her own way. Mateo, Brielle's love interest, is such a wonderful character and instantly charming both to Brielle and the reader. I thoroughly enjoyed reading their story and getting more back story to the series from Brielle's point of view.
Pairs well with a sage and mint candle. I love this novella so much! I love Brielle and Mateo! I love their courtship. I love how sweetly Mateo cares for Brielle. I love the balance of sweetness and spice they share. Chelle's books are classy and well paced. This novella shows how thoughtful Chelle is with character development and world building. I love how Mateo broke down Brielle walls and Brielle found warmth in Mateo that she didn't know she needed. Thank you Chelle for gifting me a copy of your novella before it was published. I am very honored to have had this opportunity. I can't wait to read more about these characters.
Chelle is just pulling at our heart strings again with this novella!
I love Mateo. He's the perfect cinnamon roll, nice a crispy on the outside and ooey gooey on the inside. Just so sweet and caring.
If you read Unmasking the Curse, you met Brielle. Shes fiery, strong, confident, and all around amazing. You get to see a more emotional side of her, dealing with grief and trauma.
This is a short, fast paced novella, full of tension, emotions, and a set up for book 2!!
I was so excited to dive into this novella, and it definitely didn’t disappoint. Picking up right after Unmasking the Curse, this story continues in Brielle's point of view, which I absolutely loved. It gave me a chance to see the events from her perspective. The way the novella explores Brielle’s backstory was so well done — it adds so much depth to her character.
What really stood out for me was how Brielle’s past and emotions shaped the decisions she makes in the present. It’s such a nice change of pace to see the story from her side. I can not wait for the next book.
Ohhhh my word!!!!! I absolutely adore this book I so wish it was longer it was so good i didn't want it to end. You have a headstrong FMC and a kind and loving MMC. The attraction and tension between these two is phenomenal as is thr spice. Dealing with grief is never easy but dealing with it is necessary. This book shows you that ite possible in more ways than one and you can choose to let a knew love in.
Emotional and endearing. You have two people who see grief in different ways and choose to deal with it in different ways. One is scared to love again and the other prioritizes love. The tension between the two characters is amazing and their chemistry, ugh, I ate it up. It was nice seeing familiar characters, but also had me on edge of what might come for them in future books. Great quick read and when the spice hits, chefs kiss!
Chelle Cypress has done it again. This beautifully written Novella perfectly flushes out the first book and sets up for the second. Brielle wears a mask for everyone, hiding the depth of her suffering and grief. Believed to be nothing but the harlot herbalist of her town, until Mateo. He suffers his own grief and proves to Brielle she is more than what she is allowing for herself. Theirs is a beautiful story and Chelle did an amazing job crafting it together.
This was the perfect novella between Unmasking the Curse and book 2!
Chelle seamlessly brought us back into this world where we get to know Brielle and everything that has made her the sultry, feisty, broken person she is. I enjoyed her character so much and the romance felt so real, I was truly wondering if their love story is based off of someone's real life trauma. Once again, Chelle's carefully crafted words and unfolding story have me hooked. I'm so ready for book 2!
This I what I want all of my novellas to be! Beautifully written and packed with so many emotions of heartbreak, grief, humor, worry, and passion. The only thing I wished more from Brielle and Mateo is that their story was longer. I wasn’t ready for it to end. Just when the slow started to burn 🔥 I can’t wait for the next installment in this series!
Tropes: •regency era inspired •slow burn •grief •age gap
I loved loved loved every second of this novella . I loved getting more insight into Brielle , I liked her in book 1 , but this novella made me love her . Her and Mateo’s story was just so wonderful . This novella was the perfect sweet treat I needed .
This novella also had one of my all time favorite tropes which is when one MC nursing the other back to health . I just ate it up !
I also loved getting a little more of Silas and Arianna while waiting for book 2 . Also , I enjoyed getting to read a little about Arianna’s sister as well .
This novella was perfect , short , and sweet . I loved every second of it .
Wow! I devoured this novella! 5 ⭐️! I I was so excited to be an ARC reader for this novella. This book showed the rebirth of love between two characters hurting ; thinking they’d never find true love again . It was so awesome learning more of Mateo and Brielle’s story. You will laugh and cry so be prepared for all of the emotions to hit you
Chelle Cypress released another phenomenal piece of art! Brielle and Mateo’s dynamic is otherworldly and I couldn’t stop myself from giggling and blushing like a school girl the whole time! Charming the Curse’s Consort was definitely a five star read for me and I wish I could read it for the first time all over again!
I never knew I needed a story as much as I needed this one. All I can say is well done Chelle. The magic, the interwoven stories, and the slow burn in this one were beautifully done. I would reread this no questions asked.
This is a story that someone out there will relate to 100 percent and hopefully take solace in it.
I want to thank the author for this gift to read early.
Brielle. What a tragic backstory! My heart aches for her. Mateo’s past is also tragic. My favorite quote is “Let me act as your shield and care for you so you may have a place to be free of the world’s burdens. Lay your worries on my shoulders so I can be your respite.” - as a single mother, I dream of finding a man that says that!
